One ring to rule them all, one ring to find them,

One ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them.

The Second Age• Thousands of years ago, the Dark Lord

Sauron wanted to rule Middle Earth. He pretended to be good and asked the Elves to help make sixteen ring (the Rings of Power).

• Sauron secretly made another ring. He put half his power into this ring. This was the One Ring which could control the wearers of the other sixteen rings. The Elves finally realised he was evil and they hide the Rings of Power.

• Sauron started a war. He took back the sixteen rings. He gave seven to the kings of the dwarves. He gave nine rings to the human kings. These nine human kings became the Ringwraiths.

• The Elves and the Men formed the ‘Last Alliance of Men and Elves’ to fight Sauron. There was a long war. In the last battle, a man (Isildur) cut off the One Ring from Sauron’s hand. Sauron was defeated and the war was over.

• Sauron did not die fully because half his power was still in the One Ring.

• The elves told Isildur to destroy the One Ring, but Isildur did not want to and kept it. As he was travelling back to his kingdom, he was attacked by a group of Orcs and was killed. The One Ring was lost.

The Third Age• The One Ring was found by a hobbit called

Deagol while he was fishing with his friend Smeagol in the Gladden river. Smeagol demanded that Deagol gave him the ring as a birthday present. When Deagol refused, Smeagol strangled him and hide his body.

• Smeagol had a nickname, ‘Gollum’ (because of the strange swallowing noises he made). The other hobbits became suspicious of Gollum and he went to live in the Misty Mountains.

• Gollum kept the ring for 500 years. One day, he was fishing and the ring fell off his finger (remember, the ring has a mind of its own).

• The One Ring is found by Bibo Baggins. He thinks the ring is magic but does not realise what the ring actually is. He brings the ring back to the Shire with him where it stays until the beginning of the story of The Lord of the Rings.
