Tournament Timeline

1908

Oregon beat Ohio State in the first ever NCAA tournament game. The tournament only featured eight teams at this time and would remain that way until 1951.

1939

Coach Everett Case is credited for the tradition of cutting down the nets. He sat on his players’ shoulders after they won the Southern Conference Championship.The term ‘March Madness’

derives from the Illinois boys state basketball championship in 1908. 1947

Tournament Timeline

1985

1985 marks the first year the tournament fulling expanded to 64 teams. All teams were seeded one to 16. The inna-gural year featured a stun-ning upset as Villanova beat Georgetown.

2001

Due to the addition of the Mountain West conference, the play-in game was implimented in 2001. This happened in order to keep 34 at-large bids. This game is played first and used to determine who gets into the tournament. Northwestern State beat Illinois in the first ever play-in game.

Today

Today, the tournament features 68 teams. In order for this to happen smoothly, four play-in games were implemented. Two of the teams are the final at-large qualifiers while the others are the four lowest seeds in the tournament. 4
