THE HISTORY AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE SOLAR HOT WATER INDUSTRY IN BARBADOS
James Husbands, Solar Dynamics Ltd.
1960’s
Professor Tom Lawand
of the Brace Research Institute of McGill University visited Barbados in the 1960’s. Tom utilised the materials available to construct one of the earliest “low cost solar water heaters”.
ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENT
1960’s
Professor Lawand had competition for recognition of the earliest solar water heater from Arthur Coppin, a Barbadian chemist; and Sir Frank Hutson, who we are told built one in 1935. Then came Anthony Hoad, who along with a Sinson of
D.M.Simpson also constructed solar water heaters in the 1960’s.
The oil disruption of 1973 provided the spark that would rekindle the use of solar energy for water heating.
ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENT
A 55 gallon oil drum was the storage tank. The main pressure was reduced by a feeder tank with a float valve. Insulation? Readily available bagasse, a residue of the sugar
industry. For the collector, galvanized pipes circulated the water. Aluminum
sheeting transferred the sun’s heat. A wooden enclosure of pitch pine with three panes of glass finished the collector.
ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENT
☼ Having built one of the Brace Lawand Models, the Reverend Andrew Hatch played a role in rekindling the interest. Along with fellow CADEC
staffers, he piloted a project to the CADEC Board. ☼ The sum of US 4,200.00 was passed to fund the project ☼ Its name : SOLAR DYNAMICS
ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENT
Bishop Gomez invited James Husbands to join to provide
marketing. The US$4,200.00:
☼ $2,650.00 to purchase a vehicle to transport workmen to sites.
☼ $1,550.00 was then left for materials and to pay a staff of four choir boys and a plumber.
☼ Three shareholders, Reverend Andrew Hatch, James Husbands and the late Lindsay Greaves, put up an additional US $1,500.00. Greaves was given the responsibility for production and installation.
ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENT
EARLY CHALLENGES
☼ Early competition from Emtage Electric with “Solarhart”. ☼ Offers for Husbands to sell Solarhart instead of “trying to
make solar heaters”. ☼ A conglomerate offers to purchase shares or else! ☼ In 1978, Solar Dynamics got its first major rival in the
industry, followed by others, providing stiff competition in the market.
ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENT
1975 FIRST MAJOR PROJECT
Under Housing Minister, the Honourable Philip Greaves, a housing development was launched at Oxnard's in St. James,
Barbados, in 1975. Solar Dynamics received its first contract for 84 houses through the support of
Messrs. Louis Redman and Abdul Pandor of the Ministry of Housing. The company then tried unsuccessfully to raise finance for the project through its bankers. BIMAP, Barbados Institute of Management and Productivity (C.E.O Rudy Gibbons) stepped up to the plate and backed a loan to finance the
purchase of raw materials for the project, which was completed successfully.
Oxnards
The Late JMGM “Tom” Adams, former Prime Minister of Barbados, was attracted to the concept of
building your own solar water heater – he made one with the assistance of his plumber.
Unhappy with the temperature produced, Mr. Adams sought out Solar Dynamics for assistance. So satisfied was he with the performance and the reduction in his gas
consumption, with a 100 lb cylinder lasting three and a half times as long, that he launched a solar tax rebate to home owners in 1980.
THE LATE J.M.G.M. “TOM” ADAMS
ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENT
Tom Adam’s contribution to solar energy utilization in Barbados has been profound.
Under his administration he
introduced: ☼ Tax exemption on parts being
imported for the manufacture of solar hot water systems.
☼ Income tax rebate to home owners who installed solar hot water systems.
☼ Increased the duties on gas and electric water heaters.

NATIONAL HOUSING CORPORATION – ORANGE HILL, ST. JAMES,BARBADOS ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENT
☼ Solar cooling for two buildings – The new Ministry of Agriculture building; The Government Analyst Laboratory. ☼ The Wind Turbine at Lamberts. ☼ Design of a building to be run totally on solar using
photovoltaic panels. (never built:BP PV panels sold). ☼ A solar crop dryer at Spencers Plantation.

SOLAR PROJECTS
ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENT
The Solar Hot Water Industry Received the support of The Right Excellent, Errol W Barrow, the late Prime Minister. During his tenure he opened the plant of Solar
Dynamics at White Park Road. On that occasion he stated that all housing projects
should have solar hot water systems.

SPONSORED BY USAID 1974 – 2002 ☼ Value of energy saved was 13 times the tax incentive given; saving
130,000 barrels of oil in 2002.
☼ Money saved by ratepayers - US$ 260 Million by 2002.
☼ Carbon emission savings - 15,000 tons per year based on the 35,000 systems.

HIGHLIGHTS OF OAKRIDGE STUDY – THE REASONS FOR BARBADOS’ SUCCESS
“An innovative entrepreneur
☼ Marketing strategy and technical expertise ☼ System performance guarantees including temperature ☼ After-sales service and maintenance
Government support ☼ Economic incentives ☼ Government purchases
Low payback periods and little financial risk to consumers”
Energy, money and the environment
THE LATE PROFESSOR OLIVER HEADLEY
In his erudite presentation, he laid the justification for solar water heaters: ☼ The cost of electricity was US 13 cents per kWh. ☼ Barbados’ solar water heater penetration was
30,000, it is now over 50,000. ☼ Oil was US$15.00 per barrel.
“THE SUN WILL STILL SHINE WHEN THE OIL RUNS OUT”
ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENT
THE SAVINGS
☼Each Barbados household save an average 4,000kWh of energy per year.
☼Barbados saves over 185,000 barrels of oil equivalent energy.
☼Consumer savings now more than US$ 500,000,000.00 cumulative.

ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENT
The use of solar energy reduces the peak load of power companies.
Solar water heaters are most effective in the 120º – 160º temperature range. The use of solar energy for thermal applications
reduces foreign exchange needs. Saves consumers in the Caribbean more than
80,000kWh over the life of the system.
ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENT
What makes solar technology sensible is that the amount of energy we use
today from sunlight, in no way diminishes what we can use tomorrow and the day following.
