shell out wads of cash. The influx ofBollywood icons with their sculptedbodies, fancy hairstyles and “fair andhandsome” looks have added to thedemand in the men’s grooming mar-ket. Let’s steal a look at what’s hotfor men this season.
Expert stylist Asif, who styles themanes of many Bollywood celebri-ties, says, “This season the trend isclearly the polished, corporate lookwith very short hair. The colourranges from subtle and soberbrowns to blondes. All in all it is thebarbered, clean shaven look thatmen can sport now.”
But there is a disparity betweenthe styles in Mumbai and the onesdown South. Chennai has its ownpace and according to Bonny, tech-nical advisor of Schwarzkopf Profes-sional’s technical advisor andtrainer of many big names in hairstyling in Chennai, “In Mumbai, people are ready to go for anythingbut in Chennai not many people areready to experiment. The short cut isin fashion in Chennai as well but soare fringes, spikes and Mohawks
which may not be in demand inMumbai now.”
Nayana of Salon Nayana feels thatmen have become more fashion con-scious and flamboyant. “Of late, there is an increase in the number ofmen asking for pedicures, facials, bridal make-up and the like. It is eas-ier to convince men to buy a prod-uct,” she laughs. According toKumaravel and Veena of Naturals, there are more male clients thanwomen for the fish pedicure servicethey recently launched. Talkingabout present day trends, Jammie, head stylist of Naturals, who is Suri-ya’s stylist for his upcoming movie“Ayan” says, “Though short cuts andshades such as dark blonde, cappuc-cino and tobacco are in, clients askfor funky shades like blue, contrastred and copper and for African stylehair braiding with beads or layercuts with lengthy layers. Some cli-ents ask for buzz cuts with designs orhave their names shaved along thesides or back of their heads.” Clean cuts
This summer, the clean-shaven, ton-sured look is also gaining popularity.Najeeb Ur Rehman, Technical Man-ager, Schwarzkopf Professionaltalks about another interesting lookcalled the Boy’s Own Look. “Blur-ring the lines of traditions, this is allabout bringing out manly charm,” headds. For corporates, Najeeb says“Clean cuts with minimal texturesare big and for college students anasymmetrical fringe in the frontwith a shattered punk at the back arein.” The long dishevelled look is alsoin demand, courtesy Hrithik Roshanand Shah Rukh Khan.
For men who do not know howto style their hair or are boredwith the same old style theyhave had ever since they were
kids and had their mommies oilingtheir hair or thought the only haircare product available was good oldcoconut oil, read on. Hair care andhair style are no longer a woman’sbastion. The metro sexual, ubersex-ual era has generated a great de-mand for men’s hair styles andstyling products. This is the age
when most men forgo theirneighbourhood barber and
head to stylists to gettheir hair done

Three rounds, 21 cricketersturned models for the eveningand the host for the event, ac-tor Madhavan, at his eloquent
best. Could the starry-eyed au-dience at the Park Sheraton ask formore?
The event, of course, was theshowcasing of a special collectionby Peter England Elite, the formalwear sponsors for the Chennai Su-per Kings.
After watching them sweat it outon the field, it was equally excitingto watch the Chennai Super Kings(CSK) don the role of models andsashay down the ramp, wellgroomed and in formal wear.
Thunderous clapping andcheers followed every cricketer es-pecially “namma oor mappilae”Muttiah Muralitharan. But theloudest cheers were reserved forskipper Mahendra Singh Dhoniwho, though on a different pitch, displayed the same poise he doeswhile on the cricket field. Mura-litharan, Makaya Ntini, AB de Vil-liers and Stephen Fleming tooseemed confident when it wastheir turn to walk the ramp. Theothers, however, looked a bit jit-tery and their expressions seemedto say “I’m better off on the field.”
As the charming Madhavan shotrapid fire questions at the cricket-ers, everyone was in splits. WhileMaddy joked with the newly-mar-ried Parthiv Patel and the hand-some Manpreet Goni, he askedSuresh Raina what alternativesport he played and which femaleBollywood actor he would like inhis team. Raina answered, “I playbasketball and would like RakhiSawant to be the captain of mybasketball team.”
During the final round of theshow, Ntini being Ntini couldn’thelp but burst into peals of laugh-ter. Called the jester of the team,
he kept them amused the wholetime. Asked what kept him soenergetic, he said in his inimita-ble style, “I don’t require energydrinks as I have energy in myblood.”
Before the ramp scorchers tookthe stage, Kris Srikkanth waxedeloquent about the team saying,“The CSK are fearless entertain-ers who play to win. This teamcan win matches from no-win
situations.” Talking on the occa-sion, Kedar Apshankar, COO ofPeter England said, “On our elev-enth anniversary we are pleasedto have partnered with the for-midable Chennai Super Kings, who are raring to go not just onthe field but off it as well.”
The last set of questions wasreserved for Dhoni and it wasinteresting to watch him andMaddy chat like school boys, discussing how much fun it was
to wait outside girls’ schools. Andwhen Maddy asked Dhoni how heknew about girls’ schools, Cap-tain Cool calmly replied, “I was ateenager once and even I used togo to school.”
By the end of the show, thecricketers were in a relaxed moodand, as a result, a few questionsfrom the audience were passedon to Ntini which Maddy trans-lated to him in Tamil and Ntiniwittingly answered in his lan-guage. This left the hystericalcrowd hungry for more but theshow had to be wound up and soit did in style with Muralitharanand Ntini shaking a leg togetheron request from the audience.

WELLNESS
Given the kind of lifestylewe lead, hectic, rushedand stress-filled, food is agreat comforter and
stress-buster .Eating out, which was in days gone by con-sidered sinful, is now a greatpastime .Whether it’s a busi-ness meeting, a heated debate.a bit of networking or a familycelebration – it is done over ameal at a restaurant .With thetrend having caught on, it isimportant to eat right whenyou eat out. Even the most res-olute of people when facedwith a delectable spread canyield to temptation.
How does one eat right andnot miss out on all the fun?
Says Dr. Vijay Viswanathan,Managing Director, M.V.Hos-pital for Diabetes and DiabetesResearch Centre, Royapuram,“Any person who is overweightand prone to metabolic diseas-es such as hypertension anddiabetes should avoid friedstarters like spring rolls, samo-sas, vadas, wafers, crisps andhigh calorie foods such aspizzas.”
Suggests Dr. BhuvaneshwariShankar, Chief ConsultantDietician, Apollo Hospitals,Chennai Division, “Caloriecounting, health consciouspeople should have a good lookat every dish before starting tofill the plate. Begin with a fullbowl of clear soup which willfill you and then go for themain course.”
Dr. Ajit Mullasari, DirectorCardiology, Institute of CardioVascular Diseases, MadrasMedical Mission, Chennai, ad-vises taking the edge off yourappetite before you leavehome.
Empty calories
For many people a meal out-side without the mood eleva-tors (read liquor) isunthinkable. Dr. Mullasarirecommends going in for un-sweetened juices such as limejuice or any other fresh fruitjuice, tender coconut water, butter milk or tomato juice in-stead. and avoiding carbonat-ed drinks. “Alcohol is a sourceof empty calories (it containsno minerals, vitamins or pro-teins) and can get convertedinto fat, adding weight to thebody. It increases the level oftriglycerides in your blood ifconsumed in excess. Cardiac, diabetic and hypertensive/liv-er disease patients would dowell to skip alcohol.”
Adds Dr. Viswanathan, “Anyperson who is overweight witha BMI of more than 24 andmen with a waist size of over90cm should take alcohol inmoderation. Not more thantwo pegs of whisky or brandyat a time and not more thantwo to three times a week Thiscategory of people are prone to
develop high triglycerides andhigh blood pressure.”
Social drinkers, of course, can’t bear to see anyone notnursing a drink.
Cautions Dr. Bhuvaneshwa-ri, “Once you have had your fillput the glass back and say youare done. At parties specially, never walk around with anempty glass.”
Which brings us to the maincourse. Curries with fat float-ing on the surface, baked dis-hes liberally topped withcheese, the choicest meats, avariety of sea food — a mouth-
watering spread can do moredamage than one can imagine, especially if your bad choles-terol and triglycerides are notwithin limits .However enjoy-ing your meal and eating rightis about sensible choices .Soopt for foods with a lot of fibre— vegetables, cereals, dals.Pulses, sprouts, vegetable sal-ads (no bottled sauces ordressings made of egg yolk)and greens. Keep helpings ofdishes with rich gravy to thebare minimum.
Steamed foods like idlis, idiappams and rice, phulkas
(made of whole wheat flour),rotis (not buttered naans) aresafe bets in comparison to pu-ris, parathas, baturas, bhajjisand crisp dosas. Remembergrilled fish is better than friedfish. Chicken without skin hasless saturated fat than redmeat And avoid organ meat, processed meats, dried andshell fish.
Often people make thewrong choices out of igno-rance, unaware of the hiddenfats in foods.Says Dr. Bhuva-neshwari, “Fried foods, paneerdishes or fried koftas and rich
gravies made with cream, co-conut milk/ground cashewhave hidden fats. Most des-serts also contain hidden fats.”
Healthy choice
However, by the time itcomes to the desserts mostpeople are stuffed but theirsweet tooth gets the better ofthem. If you want to eathealthy, pass up the soufflés,mousses, the pies, spongecakes and gulab jamuns andsettle for a healthy fruit saladminus the ice cream.
The timing and frequency ofeating out are also importantfor those who care about theirhealth. Says Dr. Mullasari,“During the day, the digestionprocess is at its peak .So it isalways wiser dine out atlunchtime rather than dinner.Later in the day absorption isat its peak rather than diges-tion .There should be a 2-3hour gap between dinner andbedtime. A large dinner takes2-3 hours to get digested.”li

I apply coconut oil on mybody and face before a bath. Isit all right to use coconut oilon the skin? I have a lot ofopen pores. How do I get rid ofthem? — Mamta
Open pores occur on oily skin,or on the oily areas of combina-tion skin. Therefore, avoid apply-ing coconut oil on the face. It willlead to more open pores. You canapply it on the body. After wash-ing your face, apply an astringentlotion on the areas with openpores. Mix oatmeal with egg whiteand apply it three times a week onthe open pores. Wash it off whenit dries. If you do not wish to useegg, mix multani mitti with rosewater into a paste. Apply it on theareas with open pores daily, wash-ing it off when it dries.
I have lots of pimples on myface and my skin is very oily. —Christy
Dandruff can lead to pimples.Wash your face twice a day, morn-ing and night with a medicatedsoap. Then, wipe it with an astrin-
gent lotion, using cotton wool.Mix a little rose water with san-dalwood paste and apply it on theentire face, washing it off after 15minutes with plain water. Mixcinnamon powder with a littlelemon juice and a few drops ofhoney into a paste. Apply it onlyon the pimples daily and leave iton for at least one hour. Simmerneem leaves in water. Cool andstrain the water. Make a paste ofthe neem leaves and apply it dailyon your face. Avoid creams.
I look fair but my hands aredark, dry and rough. — Preethi
For dark hands, take two tbspof sunflower oil and three tbsp ofcoarse sugar. Mix the two into apaste. Apply it daily on yourhands, rinsing it off after 15 min-utes. Wear rubber gloves whileusing detergents for householdchores. After using soap or de-tergents, massage your handswith cream.
I have dry and dark lips.Applying vaseline every twohours does not help. — Uma
The skin on the lips is thin anddelicate. After washing your face, rub lips gently with a soft towelwhen they are wet. This helps re-move dead skin. Then applycream of milk, leaving it on for anhour. Apply pure almond oil dailyon your lips at night, leaving it onovernight. Change your brand oflipstick because the perfume in
some lipsticks can cause dark-ness as a reaction to sun-expo-sure (photosensitivity).
Though I oil my hair reg-ularly and condition it aftershampooing it, it becomestangled, rough and frizzy af-ter a day or two. — Anuradha
Twice a week, heat pure coco-nut oil and apply it on the scalpand hair. Dip a towel in hot water, squeeze out the water and wrapthe towel around your head like aturban. Keep it on for five min-utes. Repeat the hot towel wrapthree or four times. Leave the oilon overnight. Use cold waterwhen you wash your hair. Weeklyhenna treatments will also help.Add four tsp each of lemon juiceand coffee, two raw eggs andenough curd to henna powder, mixing it into a thick paste. Applyit on your hair, washing it off af-ter an hour. If you do not wish touse egg, add more curd.
Suggest a conditioner formy hair. I don’t want to usehenna. — Sapna
Give your hair conditioningtreatment before you shampoo it.Beat well one tsp each of vinegarand honey with an egg. Massagethe mixture lightly into your hair. Then give yourself the hot toweltreatment, leaving it on for halfan hour before washing your hair.

Steamed foods are healthy.Beware hidden fats in fried foods and desserts.Settle for fruit salad sans ice cream instead ofrich sweets for dessert. It’s wiser to dine out for lunch rather than dinner.Restrict eating out to twice a month.Check portion sizes and indicate dietarypreferences.
DOS AND DON’TS
Suzanne walks into her houseafter a long day of work. Shefeels exhausted, light-headedand has the beginnings of a
headache. Suzanne’s job entailstravelling around the city. Is Su-zanne suffering from heatexhaustion?
Summer is here in earnest, withblazing heat and its accompanyingmedical problems. Hot weatherand high humidity can lead to de-hydration, heat exhaustion andheat stroke. Children and olderpeople particularly are prone toheat exhaustion and it is essentialto make them drink enough fluids.
Our bodies need to be kept at anormal, constant temperature ofapproximately 98.6 degrees Fah-renheit (37 degrees Celsius) tohelp protect our brain and internalorgans. As the external temper-ature rises, our sweat glands startpouring out sweat. As our sweatevaporates, it helps to cool usdown. However, high humidity caninterfere with the evaporationprocess and, as a result, our bodytemperature remains elevated.
Heat exhaustion
When exposed relentlessly toheat, and without adequate re-placement of body fluids lost dueto sweating, a person can becomeoverheated and dehydrated. As thebody temperature rises, the bloodvessels under the skin dilate. Theskin becomes flushed and feels hot. There is pooling of blood in thelower limbs and when the personstands up from a seated position, she might feel light-headed andmight faint.
Heat stroke
If left untreated, heat exhaus-tion can progress to heat stroke, which occurs when the body’stemperature rises to dangerouslevels (more than 105 degreesFahrenheit).
Older adults are at high risk forheat stroke due to the decreasedthirst mechanisms that occur withage. They tend to become dehy-drated much faster. It is advisablefor older adults to remain indoorson very hot days, as well as duringthe times of day when the heat is atits peak (usually between 10 a.m.and 2 p.m.).
If you absolutely must go outinto the heat, make sure that youdrink at least 1 to 2 glasses of waterbefore you leave home. Be sure tocarry water with you. Buttermilkwith salt or lime juice with salt willensure that you replace the saltthat you lose from sweating. Avoid
hot drinks like coffee and teabecause the caffeine can makeyour heart race and worsen theproblem. Soft drinks can aggra-vate the dehydration because ofthe amount of sugar they have.
Wearing a hat or visor will helpblock the sun from your face andmay also help prevent headachesdue to the heat. An umbrella is agood idea if you will be in the sunfor long periods of time.
Urine infection
Summer is also the time whenyou can be prone to urine in-fections. Remember that burningduring urination can also occurwhen you are dehydrated and theurine is very concentrated. Toconfirm that you have a urinaryinfection, a test of the urine mustshow more than 10 pus cell perhigh power field. A culture andsensitivity test of the urine mustbe done and an antibiotic must bestarted only if it shows a signif-icant bacterial growth.
Ureteric colic
The pain hit suddenly and with-out warning. Sumitra bent doubleas she felt the pain shoot from herright flank (loin) to her groin. Thepain came and went in spasms, leaving her crying and writhing inpain. Sumitra has a stone in herureter (the tube which leads fromthe kidney to the bladder).
Problems due to kidney andureteric stones tend to get high-lighted in the summer monthsbecause people are likely get de-hydrated. When there is notenough fluid intake, the stones donot get washed out and lead toproblems. When the stone isstuck in the ureter, the ureterkeeps contracting to push thestone out. This can cause intensepain.
Ureteric stones are usually justa few millimetres in size. Thetreatment is conservative to beginwith. Injections are given to re-lieve the pain. Intravenous andoral fluids are given to correct thedehydration and to help wash thestone out. Every time urine ispassed, it is run through a filter toconfirm that the stone has comeout. Surgery is usually notrequired.
Staying cool and well hydratedis the answer to some of sum-mer’s problems.

Watermelon is a tender, warm-season vegetable. It can begrown in all parts of the coun-try, but the warmer temper-
atures and longer growing season ofthe southern areas especially favourthis vegetable. Watermelon is trulyone of summertime’s sweetest treats. It is fun to eat, and good for you.Watermelon seeds were brought tothis country by African slaves. Todaythere are more than 100 different va-rieties of watermelons. The flesh maybe red, pink, orange or yellow. Thereare seedless varieties and super-sweet round ones that fit nicely intothe refrigerator.
Most watermelons have darkbrown or black seeds. The seedlessvariety produces a few white seeds.Once picked, uncut watermelon canbe stored for about 2 weeks at roomtemperature, especially if the tem-perature is about 45 to 50°. Uncutwatermelons have a shorter refriger-ator life, so store them at room tem-perature until ready to chill and eat.
Health benefits
Watermelon is low in calories andnutritious. It is high in lycopene, sec-ond only to tomatoes. Recent re-search suggests that lycopene, apowerful antioxidant, is effective inpreventing some forms of cancer and
cardiovascular disease. It is alsohigh in Vitamin C and Vitamin A, inthe form of disease fighting beta-carotene. Potassium is also avail-able, which is believed to help con-trol blood pressure and possiblyprevent strokes.
Preparation and serving
The flavour of watermelon is bestenjoyed raw. Heating diminishes theflavour and softens the texture. Wa-termelon tastes best icy cold in fruitsmoothies, slushes or simply eatenfrom the rind.
To make melon balls, cut thewatermelon in half lengthwise theninto quarters. Watermelon balls canbe scooped right out of rind. Createperfect balls, using a melon baller, and a twist of the wrist. The water-melon shell can be used to hold themelon balls as well as other fruit.Watermelon punch is also servedfrom the hallow rind. By sitting theround end inside a ring or bowl, theshell will remain stable during serv-ing.
To remove seeds, cut each quarterin half again. With the flesh of eachwedge on top and the rind sitting onthe counter, look for the row ofseeds along the flesh of each wedge.Using a sharp knife, cut along theseed line and remove the flesh just
above it. Scrape the seeds from theremaining piece.
Home preservation
Seeded watermelon chunks can befrozen to use in watermelon slushesor fruit smoothies. Watermelon sor-bet or granita stays fresh in thefreezer for up to 3 months. Thedifference between a sorbet and agranita is in the texture. Sorbets aresmooth, whereas granitas are coarse. You do not need an ice cream makerto make a granita. Now, for s recipe.

FROM THE DIARY
Kamala Parasuram’s passion fortravelling is matched by herdesire to share travel stories.Lotus Beckons, published
three years ago, was a result of thesetwin interests.
The book took the reader on aworld tour, as Kamala gave an ac-count of the places she visited withher husband during internationalbusiness trips.
For a long time, Kamala wantedto train the searchlight on what issecond home to her — the Nilgiris. In 1954, Kamala’s father boughtSylvan Hall, a house in Kotagiri, which was with the family till 1987.Later, Kamala’s husband purchaseda property in Lovedale.
Chandru’s life
With strong links with the Nilgi-ris, Kamala is tuned to its uniquecharacter. She also feels an emo-tional closeness to the place. One ofher siblings, Chandru, lived anddied there.
Her latest book, Chandru, ASibling Remembers (published byAhana Books), discusses the landin the backdrop of Chandru’s life.
As the protagonist lived a short
life (28 years), the book is aptlyshort (88 pages).
As a baby, Chandru seemednormal except for a restive spirit.
The family began to have ques-
tions about the boy’s health onlyafter he suffered a measles attackthat was accompanied by highfever. This illness brought aboutthe first convulsions.
In the years to come, he wouldhave regular bouts of fits.
His brain bore the brunt ofevery such attack.
Apart from medication, Chan-dru needed a cool place and apeaceful atmosphere to preventhim from having those debilitat-ing fits. To meet this requirement,he was moved to Sylvan Hall.
Those around Chandru had tobe careful not to irritate or annoyhim as a troubled mental state ledto an attack.
Kamala was one of nine si-blings who showered abundantlove on Chandru and shelteredhim from rude stares that alwaysdisturbed his mental equilibrium.
Through anecdotal accounts ofChandru’s days at Kotagiri, Kama-la dwells on the land, its people, plant life and cuisine. Threethings shine through this book —sibling love, a literary attempt tosensitise people to the mentallychallenged and a mild com-mentary on the Nilgiris that doesnot intrude on the mainnarrative.

Diamonds, a girl’s best friend, just got a little more popularwith research proving thatpeople are buying more dia-
monds than gold. The credit, ofcourse, goes to the rising gold pric-es.
According to Tehmasp Printer,Managing Director, IGI (IndianGemological Institute-India) thisis not the only reason for diamondsto do better than other preciousand semi-precious stones. He says,“Today diamonds are certified andthere is a standardisation whichdid not exist earlier; so people feelsecure about buying them.” Talk-ing at length about IGI and its cer-tification process, he says the IGIcame to India in 1993 and at thatpoint of time nobody knew whatcertification was. Every diamondseller had his own standards. Eachclaimed to have the best diamondsbut the quality differed from sellerto seller. “The IGI introduced stan-dardisation in India,” he adds.
The IGI reportedly has 14 pa-rameters to judge the carat, weight, clarity, colour and cut of a dia-mond. The IGI mark certificationhas brought about a transforma-tion because now a jeweller knowswhat he is selling and the customeris confident about what he is buy-ing. “Knowing facilitates buyingand this is how the market for dia-monds has increased,” he adds.
What’s more is that with the in-troduction of the Mobile Laborato-ry Concept, all jewellers in Indiacan avail themselves of jewellerycertification at their doorstep.
Tehmasp further states thatnowadays there is a whole gamut ofdesigns available at flexible rates,be it the traditional classic mouldor fashionable trendy patterns. “Ofall the cities, Chennai offers thebest quality diamonds. In Delhi, people often opt for big diamondsso the colour, cut and clarity mayhave to be compromised upon un-like in Chennai where people arefinicky about the quality of dia-monds. Another interesting fea-ture is that consumers can nowpersonalise their diamonds by in-scribing messages on them fortheir loved ones. This is known asLASERSCRIBE and this state-of-the-art laser inscription allows in-scription of gem identification in-formation as well as personalisedmessages,” informs Tehmasp whowas recently in Chennai to certifyJoyalukkas.
Asked how he would sell a dia-mond to someone who doesn’tfancy it, he says, “People are entit-led to their choices but a diamondis forever and the best part about itis that every diamond is unique. Itis durable and if you gift it to some-one, it is a permanent sign of love.”

PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT (From left) Syed Dawood, Rafath Habib and Syed Habib PHOTO: K. V. SRINIVASAN
There are several tangibleand intangible ways ofjudging the worth ofsportspersons — their
statistics, words, deeds andconduct. Many top-classplayers, both current and re-tired, have proved to be fal-lible, off the field. Very fewhave had those innate qual-ities (not performance alone)that made them loved and re-spected among the sportingfraternity and the world atlarge for more than two dec-ades running.
However, one cue sportsfamily has consistently anddiligently maintained its rep-utation of being men of integ-rity, dignity and modesty.Syed Dawood, Syed Habib andRafath Habib are examples ofhow perfection can beachieved through constant
practice. The youngest ofthe lot, Rafath Habib, says,“It’s a pleasure and honourto be part of such a family. My paternal grand uncle(Dawood, 72 years) and fa-ther (Syed, 66) have beenhuge inspirations. Withoutthem, I would not have beenin the sport now.”
The eldest of the three isDawood. Talk about totaldedication to the game, andthere’s none to match up toDawood, who is betterknown as ‘Black’ because ofhis zealousness and eager-ness in potting the black atthe first opportunity.
Inherently skilled
Brought up in a familythat manufactures tables forthe sport, Dawood, son of
part-time player Syed Is-mail, was a natural at pot-ting and exceptionally skilfulin finding the right angles. At his peak, he was No.3 inIndia.
Syed narrates a storyabout Dawood that’s worthmentioning here. Just to seeDawood play in the SouthIndia championship in1969in Madurai, Habib travelledall the way from Chennai tosee his uncle. “The way heplayed created so much in-terest. That event made mewhat I am,” recounts Syed.
“When we played, we cre-ated a buzz,” adds Habib.Dawood had a mind of hisown and the ability to learnnew things from defeats andvictories alike. Says Syed,“In the State snooker cham-pionship in the early 1980s,
Dawood lost to A.K. Ahmedquite early. Having injuredhis right hand, Dawoodpractised religiously withhis left. Fate decided thatthe two meet again in1982-83, and Dawood gotthe better of Ahmed.” Hisconfidence grew and Da-wood, a veteran by then, clinched the State billiardstitle (defeating Nationalchampion Arvind Savur)and finished runner-up insnooker the next year.
Running the John W.Roberts Company, manu-facturers of tables, with histwo sons Syed Sulaiman andSyed Ameen, Dawood is asatisfied man. “I am re-lieved. My sons have takenover from me and are doinga good job,” says Dawood. “Ican now rest in peace.”
Habib, too, can relax, butthe entertainer in him re-fuses to do so. Consideredan expert in ‘trick’shots,Habib, three-time IndiaNo.2, still draws huge crowdwherever he plays. Evennow, when presented withan opportunity, Habib exe-cutes the trick shots withrelative ease. He has the
distinction of being the firstplayer from Tamil Nadu tocompile a century break ina National championship.
Habib, an international, says dedication and deter-mination are missing amongthe current crop of young-sters. Busan Asian Games(2002) gold medallist Ra-fath Habib, still the best bet
from Tamil Nadu, says hehas the hunger to win Na-tional-level tournaments. ASouthern Railway employee,Rafath says the Tamil NaduBilliards and Snooker Asso-ciation should consider atleast having two or moretables for young talents toshine. The mushrooming ofparlours is the best thing to
have happened to snooker, feels Rafath. “It has madethe sport more affordableand accessible,” says the37-year-old. Just by watch-ing them play and listeningto their pearls of wisdom, the current generation couldsurely improve their game anotch or two.
