All eyes were on Cuban Ambassador Jose Ramon Cabanas

Rodriguez as he spoke at an event called “Cuban Foreign Policy on a Global Level,” held in Howard University’s School of Social Workon Oct. 21. Cabanas was visiting Howard University to take part in the first event in a series of educational eventscalled Cuba: Beyond the Headlines, hosted by Howard University’s very own Ralph J. Bunche International Affairs Center. Although the event was held on Howard’s campus, it was open to the public with tickets.

Deputy Director of the International Affairs Center,

Tonija Navas, has been working on historicevent since her arrival in August. She met with both the Provost and the Chair of the Department of Political Science, and they all agreed that the university ought to take advantage of this important time in history. Ambassador Cabanas is the first Cuban Ambassador to the United States in over half a century. He was appointed the position over a month ago as a result of the newly found relationship between the United States and Cuba..

At the event, the ambassador first gave a fact-filled presentation about Cuba followed by a question and answer segment. Attendees had the opportunity to pose questions to him so that he may provide clarity on Cuba’s foreign policies and other related topics.

An attendee from the United States Department of Defense asked, “How does Cuba plan to manage the balance between American concerns with Russian Engagement in Cuba?” Her question came in light of America’s recent developed relationship with Cuba, along with Russia’s involvement with Latin American countries. After giving some historical examples the Ambassador answered stating, “We can have our differences but in the end of the discussions and debates, we have to have comprehensive dialogue.”

The event was preceded by a reception where attendees got a chance to have a more intimate conversation with one another and the ambassador.

“I found it very interesting to get the Cuban perspective opposed to what the U.S is used

to hearing,” Maria Lawton, a George Washington University Student who attended the event, said.

Aaron Rose, another George Washington University Student,“recognized that he(Ambassador Cabanas) speaks on the behalf of the government” so the ambassador could not be as forthcoming with details and could not challenge certain ideas.

The next event in the Cuba: Beyond the Headlines series is scheduled for Nov.18th and will focus on education in Cuba. During his presentation the ambassador stated the adults in the country had a 99.8 percent literacy rate. You can find out more facts like this and more about events like this by visiting the Ralph J. Bunche International Affair Center here on campus.

One on-campus initiative is teaching students and community members

sustainability through composting. The Howard University Community Garden, located next to the university’s Howard Plaza Towers West, is part of a D.C. Parks and Recreation (DPR) initiative, the Community Compost Cooperative Network. The Network aims to create quality compost from garden and food waste by providing critter-proof compost bins to its partnering gardens.

“DPR set up the program and the university’s Offi ce of Sustainability agreed to allow the group to use the community garden space to implement it,” Compost Manager Jeffrey Neal

said.

The Cooperative’s efforts focus on diverting food waste from landfi lls into compost that will be used to grow produce.

“Currently composting is an opportunity to close the loop. The current approach is an open loop system that’s wasteful; we send food waste to landfi lls which is toxic and creates a lot of problems,” Neal said.“We can use our food and food waste in a sustainable manner, but most importantly, improve our quality of life by using this process.”

Neal says that if compost is used to grow crops—closing the loop—a better quality product with a higher nutrient density will be cultivated at a higher yield than non-composting gardening methods.

So far, 19 people have gone through the required orientation and are part of the co-op, while at least another 20 have participated onwork days.

“I’ve been really pleased with the enthusiasm and interest that people have shown. Now that this opportunity is available, people have really gravitated towards it and want to participate,” Neal said.

Anyone in the community can participate if they have a prerequisite one hour of orientation training that breaks down the basics of composting, as well as signing a commitment for at least one hour of volunteering a quarter.

Senior JoBrena Bleach, a garden co-manager, serves as a subject matter expert who advises garden volunteers on planting and

harvesting. At least three times a week, Bleach, a commuter student, fi nds herself working in the garden before the sun rises. As an avid gardener, she takes solace in the ease of the activity as well as the spiritual connection she fi nds through gardening.

“Composting is really easy. There is nothing really complex about it,” Bleach said. “I do it because it’s therapeutic and it helps me see God. Even if you don’t believe in God, just giving back to the earth does something for you.”

Striving to improve the outside living space of students that live by the Towers as well as providing education about gardening, farming and access to nutritious food is something senior Valerie Onifade plans to do. This message of self-sustainability also attracted Emi Williams, a freshman. Williams joined the Cooperative

because of the comfort and sense of community it provided during her transition into university life.

“Coming from the Pacifi c Northwest, fi nding community was important when I fi rst came to Howard,” the Seattle native said. “Through doing something as simple yet effective and environmentally conscious as going to the compost training or helping out with the garden, I am more grounded. It gives me more stability, especially coming from a more urban area.”

The next compost training sessions will take place on today, Thursday, Oct. 29 at 8 a.m. and 2 p.m at the Howard University Community Garden. Inquiries about the program can be directed to [email protected].

The six credit rule was taken away from the Howard University student body

last year abruptly, leaving many students wondering where they stood and if they were eligible to graduate and walk across the stage in the Spring of 2015. The rule stated, seniors that are six credits away (two courses) or less from completing their course schemes for their majors, on a case by case basis and upon the approval of an advisor will be able to walk with their classmates for graduation. The university had faced issues with the rule in the past, allowing students who were six credits away to walk and then never hearing back from the students again.

Obviously this is problematic, I will be the first to advocate for more Black men and women to earn their degrees, but the six credit rule is not hindering our students from doing that, it is the

implementation of the rule that in the past was problematic.

The University chose to abolish a rule that is over all beneficial as opposed to restructure it. The opportunity to walk for your undergraduate graduation with your classmates is a once in a life time chance, should we really be forcing our students to miss out on this over six credits? For a brief moment imagine your graduation day. It is a beautiful May morning, the sun is shining and the sky is a clear blue. The yard has transformed; proud family members and friends are staring up at the stage waiting to see you walk across and get your diploma. You’ve been sitting for a few hours and finally your name is called flash backs of all those long hours studying, meals in the café, trips to the monuments and your first Howard crush began to flow

through your mind. You’ve finally made it, and it is your moment! Now imagine being only six credits away and being told you can’t walk on stage for graduation.

Re-instating the six credit rule, based on certain criteria, would ensure that students on the brink would have the opportunity to walk for graduation. We are not talking about students who were lazy and wasted their time here at Howard. The lack of the six credit rule is hurting some of our best and brightest minds.

Senior Brittany Hill, a member of the Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity, is currently taking 21 credits this semester and will be doing so next semester and still will fall six credits short of being able to walk. She has never failed a class here at Howard and represents the values and

intelligence our University should be proud of producing. She transferred to Howard and has a unique situation which calls for a unique solution. She deserves to walk, she deserves that moment on the stage. Her mother deserves to see her get her diploma! The six credit rule could make all the difference.

The six credit rule should have been re-structured not abolished. The main issue the University faced was that some students were walking and never returning. Again that is a problem but all problems have solutions. A possible solution to stop students from walking and never returning, is to first have the student meet with their advisor, identify the course or courses the student needs and if the course will be available during the summer

semester at Howard. Then have the student register for the course(s) and finally have the student place a down payment to hold their spot and show their commitment, before they are eligible to walk and are granted the privilege of walking with their classmates.

Currently a group of Howard University students, in the Administrative Law course are fighting for this rule to be re-instated and re-structured. They believe that if a set of commitments that each student looking to apply to be eligible for the six credit rule was put together and the advisors worked with these students on a case by case basis it could make all the difference! Walking across the stage for graduation is a moment you will never forget, even if it doesn’t mean a great deal to you as a student imagine how proud your mother or father is, how proud your little cousin who looks up to you is! It is a moment that will be with you forever.

SOUTH CAROLINA POLICE OFFICER THROWS BLACK STUDENT ACROSS CLASSROOM, ARRESTED

A South Carolina police officer was arrested on Wednesday, Oct. 28 for his actions toward a high school student earlier this week. Deputy Ben Fields is now facing criminal charges for throwing a Black female

high school student across a classroom and yanking her out of her chair during an arrest. This incident that was captured on multiple videos and is being investigated by the FBI, Justice Department’s office of civil rights and the U.S. Attorney’s office. Fields had been suspended without pay and banned from

school district properties in the wake of the incident.

PROGRAM LAUNCHED TO IMPROVE WORKFORCE DIVERSITY, FULL COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIPS

Howard County school officials are now partnering with a college in Maryland to get more minority students into the education workforce, providing full scholarships to low-income students that participate

in the program. Lucky students at McDaniel College in Maryland will be eligible to participate in the Teachers for Tomorrow (T4T) program that requires students to commit three years of employment in

the Maryland school system after graduation. All participants are required to either major in education or minor in education with a teaching certificate. Accommodating students with interest outside of teaching, participants can also have the option to work at a school district office in their field of student and teach a class on the side or serve as a mentor to students. The new program is expected to include a minimum of

12 students for at least four years.

MAJOR CONFLICTS BETWEEN U.S, CHINA

Conflicts have intensified between the U.S. and China this week. Believing the U.S. was attempting to militarize the region, Chinese naval ships warned and tracked a U.S. naval ship near the waters of the

South China Sea. A U.S. defense official told CNN that the destroyer USS Lassen “conducted a transit” within 12 nautical miles of five reefs claimed by Beijing, including Subi Reef, in the Spratly Islands on Tuesday morning. The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs was outraged over the transit. “If any

country thinks that, through some gimmicks, they will be able to interfere with or even prevent China from engaging in reasonable, legitimate and legal activities in its own territories, I want to suggest those

countries give up such fantasy,” ministry spokesman Lu Kang said.

HBCU GRAD/COUNCILMAN TASED AND ARRESTED BY POLICE: ARE OUR LEADERS SAFE?

Citizens are outraged over an arrest of an African-American councilman and Prairie View graduate. Jonathan Miller, 26, was arrested and tased after the jail cell death of Sandra Bland. The situation

allegedly escalated after Miller attempted to intervene with police officers who had stopped to question a few of his friends gathered in front of his apartment. According to HBCU Buzz, he was arrested on

suspicion of interfering with a public servant and resisting arrest and held overnight in the same county jail where Bland, 28, died after being stopped in July for failing to signal a lane change.

Scream City D.C.,located in Lot 8 of RFK stadium, is

an attraction that features two haunted mazes that guarantee to scare the attendees. However, if you’re not easily scared, the mazes won’t get many screams out of you until Nov. 1 when it’s all over.

The first maze is the Exorcism Estate Haunted House. Screams and moans could be heard while standing outside of the maze. Employees also stood outside of the maze in anattempt to scare maze go-ersbefore they entered the Exorcism Estate Haunted House.

The house is complete with an exorcism room, and

a mutilation laboratory. Employees of the house dressed in gory and scary costumes, waiting to pop out of dark corners and follow you throughout the maze to heighten the anxiety.

After exiting the first maze, just when you think you’re about ready to

leave, you are placed right in a line that leads you to thesecond maze. Called the Slaughterhouse Factory, the second maze features a slaughterhouse complete with mutilated bodies and a psychopath with a chainsaw (fun fact: the chainsaw doesn’t have blades on it).

In addition to a

slaughterhouse room, there is also a room with strobe lights and screaming costumed employees. Not for the epileptic, the Slaughthouse’s strobe lights add to the confusion and fear.

Each maze only lasts about ten minutes long so depending on your fear level, the anxiety won’t last that long. Overall Scream City DC was a fun experience. Regardless of the lack of screams from the not-easily-scared, the mazesdoa good job at getting your heart racing and your blood pumping.

Tickets range from $30-$40. So, if you’re willing to test your fear factor, take a trip to Scream City, but only if you dare.

SPO R T STIMBERWOLVES MOURN THE LOSS OF HEAD COACH FLIP SAUNDERS

Nkechi NnoromSports Writer

Only four days removed, a grieving, yet determined, Minnesota Timberwolves

team returned to the hardwood in their season opener against the Los Angeles Lakers. Minnesota isbsuffering from a serious loss; their head coach, Flip Saunders, passed on Sunday morning of Oct. 25.

Milt Newton, the general manager of the Minnesota Timberwolves, stepped on to the practice court and broke the news on Oct. 25 to the team. Saunders, the Timberwolves’ head coach and President of Basketball Operation, had succumbed to his complications from Hodgkin’s lymphoma. The rest of practice was cancelled.

A heartbroken Kevin Garnett left practice and walked to the only place where he could find solace at that moment. Garnett entered the parking garage, stopped and sat atop of the cold concrete slab in the spot marked for Saunders.Garnett later shared an image of this moment oh his Facebook page with the caption, “Forever in my heart…”

Saunders, 60, and Garnett, 39, had spent the 1995-1996 to 2004-2005 NBA seasons together in Minnesota, seeding a close-knit relationship that would lead to Garnett’s return to the Twin Cities.

Exactly one month after re-signing Garnett, on Aug. 11, 2015, Saunders had been diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma and was undergoing treatment. He was set

to remain the Timberwolves’ head coach and president. After being hospitalized following complications in September, team owner Glen Taylor announced that Saunders would miss the entire 2015-2016 season.

Saunders was an integral part of the rebuilding of the Wolves organization, carefully handpicking each player after the exit of Kevin Love. Every player on the current rosterhad been drafted, acquired or signed to an extension since Saunders return in May 2013. A team mixed with young star-studded potential and three seasoned veterans are now left to pursue Minnesota’s first playoff berth without Saunders.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver also released a statement

following Saunders passing via twitter.

“The NBA Family is mourning today over the tragic loss of our friend and colleague, Flip Saunders. With more than 40 years around the game, 20 of them in the NBA, Flip’s untimely passing has left a gaping hole in the fabric of our league. On behalf of the NBA, we offer our most sincere condolences to Flip’s wife, Debbie, their four children, and the entire Minnesota

Timberwolves organization.”

In his 17 seasons as a head coach in the NBA, Flip Saunders notched a 654-594 record. He took the Timberwolves to their only conference finals appearance in 2004 and took the Detroit Pistons to three straight conference finals from 2006 to 2008. He also spent three years coaching the Washington Wizards from 2009 to 2012.
