The highperformance
battery forengine start
and UPS
XHP Plastic Range
Reliability is the crucial function inall standby power systems asfailure could endanger life. Anickel-cadmium battery is one themost reliable sources of standbypower available today. Alcad’sexpertise in designing, developingand manufacturing these batteriesfor a wide variety of harshenvironments guarantees that youget a battery that you can trust.Using the well proven sinteredpositive and plastic bondednegative plate construction, XHPbatteries offer the best solution forboth engine start and UPSapplications.
The key features of reliability,mechanical/electrical robustness, and rapid discharge performanceare particularly suited to criticalengine start applications. With ultralow maintenance and long life,XHP can also provide costeffective and guaranteeduninterrupted on-line power.

features
Advanced technology
No more “Sudden Death”The electrochemical advantages ofAlcad’s nickel-cadmium XHPbatteries ensure absolutely safeoperation without risks of “suddendeath” or complete loss of powerwhich can so seriously handicaplead acid batteries.
Long lifetimeA life of greater than 20 years canreasonably be expected, which, depending on environmentalconditions, can represent 5 or 10times the lifespan of a lead acidbattery. This could result inavoiding the need for anyreplacement during the lifetime ofthe equipment it is powering.
Ultra low maintenanceXHP batteries only require topping-up every 10 years when correctlycharged. This simple and costeffective upkeep proves extremelyadvantageous for UPS users whenweighed against the frequentreplacements and resultinginterruptions experienced with leadacid.
Wide operating temperaturerangeXHP batteries maintain their highperformance levels under the mostrigorous climatic and temperatureconditions: -20˚C to +60˚C.
A voltage window for UPSOptimising performance gainedfrom its advanced nickel-cadmiumelectrode technology, the XHPbattery is able to offer a highpower performance with a narrowvoltage window ideally suited toUPS requirements.
Highly tolerant of electricalabuseUnlike lead acid batteries, nickel-cadmium can tolerate high ripplecurrents, high overcharge currentsand voltage reversal, and remainsunaffected by deep or completedischarge.
Trouble free storageXHP batteries can be stored atextreme temperatures of -40˚C to+60˚C and for over 2 years indischarged condition. Thiscompares with lead acid whichcould be stored from -10˚C to+40˚C but needs to be fullycharged and recharged at leastevery six months.
High discharge rateThis battery is particularly wellsuited to repetitive high dischargerates as required for enginestarting. XHP batteries maintain asatisfactory starting performance, even when partly discharged, throughout their 20 year servicelife.
CommissioningIt is often possible to dispense witha special commissioning charge –a significant advantage of the XHPsintered/PBE construction.

XHP PLASTIC RANGEUPS Battery Calculation
1. Determine the battery powerTaking into consideration the load power factor andinverter efficiency, the inverter requires a DCconstant power from the battery of 45 kW.
2. Determine the number of cellsmaximum DC voltagecharging voltage/cell
3. Determine the minimum allowablevoltage per cell (the end voltage)minimum DC voltagenumber of cells
4. Determine the battery power per cellDC power required
number of cells
5. Select the cell sizeBy reference to the constant power performancetable relating to the end voltage defined in(3): 1.00 V/Cell and to 10 minutes dischargeXHP 70 gives an available performance of 268 W.
6. Battery Definition
A 50 kVA UPS System must supply a load for a standby period of 10 minutes. The inverter DC voltage window is 264 V – 187 V, the charging voltage1.42 V/Cell and the float charge 1.37 V/Cell. Battery operation at 20˚C.

Engine Start Battery CalculationA battery is required to give 3 x 10 second startattempts at 0˚C on a Cummins NTA 855 G3 dieselengine.
1. Determine required Battery Current and Voltage
Engine data gives breakaway current of 1020 A(1 sec) and cranking current of 565 A(3 x 10 secs) at 24 V (nominal).
2. Select the cell size
Refer to 10% discharged performance tables (thisdata assumes, worst case, that on float charge thecell has not recovered to 100% charged). XHP 80gives 1150 A for 1 sec at 0˚C to 0.65 V/Cell and657 A for 30 secs at 0˚C to 0.85 V/Cell.
3. Determine the number of cells
(Assuming Static Charger)nominal DC voltagenominal cell voltage
Therefore:4. Battery Definition
5. Alternative number of cells
(Assuming only Rotary Charger)DC voltage available from regulated RotaryCharger is likely to be set at 27.24 V (this isdetermined by 12 Lead Acid Cells (nominal 24 V)charged at 12 x 2.27 V). Then
Max DC voltageCharging voltage/cell
