Welcome to Easter Roadfor this afternoons clashwith St. Johnstone. This

game is the beginningof a hectic Premiershipprogramme that sees

us playing three homematches out of four in aperiod of only 12 days.

Having already had threeaway fixtures out of four

it is nice to even thingsup particularly over the

festive period, as the onlymatch outside Edinburghfor us is the Boxing Day

    encounter back upat Dingwall.

Of course there is theNew Year Derby to look

forward to, but thereare a lot of points to bepicked up before then

Last Saturdays loss at Parkheadwas frustrating and disappointing, considering the way we attacked Celticin the final twenty minutes whilst alsohitting the post in the process.

Lady Luck was not with us last week, butthere will come a time when everythingdrops for us, especially if enough

decent crosses are delivered in to theopponents box.

I was really pleased with the way inwhich the lads kept going in a matchthat was always going to be a real testfor them. Everyone was talking abouta Celtic backlash but apart from thegoal, the home team never pierced ourresilient back four and Ben Williamsonly had long range shots to deal with.

Even then, there were some wickeddeflections and Bens reflexes were

called in to action as well as his fellowdefenders who also helped to clearthe danger.

It was pleasing to see that the change intactics in the second half worked well, with young Jason Cummings coming onand looking lively and busy.

Our superb fans at Celtic Parkreally got behind the boys and thestanding ovation at the end wasvery much appreciated by the team.Considering the hammering inflicted

by the champions on other Premiershipsides after a European defeat, it wasextremely pleasing to see that there wasno capitulation from us and no runningriot from Neil Lennons side.

Whilst it was my first loss as managerof Hibernian, I took a great deal ofpleasure from the display, and againwe took small steps forward as a group. To have the Manager of Celtic tell hisplayers to run the ball into the cornerat the end of the 90 minutes shows thatthe home team were under pressure and

had settled for the narrow 1-0 win.

This afternoon we welcome TommyWright and the St Johnstone team, staff, players and supporters to Easter Roadand as the Perth side is directly aboveus in the table, a win for us today would

help to close the gap on the top six.

As this is the last match beforeChristmas, I would like to wish allHibees around the globe a very merryChristmas and a happy New Year. Wewill be training as usual this comingweek and will be in bright and early onWednesday morning, though we dont

travel up to the Highlands until BoxingDay.

I wonder if there will be a chipper openin Aviemore for the return journey, although we may have to settle forturkey and chips instead!

The players wanted to go up on theday of the game as its one of the worstfeelings in football to have to meet upin the evening and drive to a hotel onChristmas Day night.

Still, we can really look forward to

taking on Ross County again havingwon the Scottish Cup tie there a fewweeks ago. St Johnstone have beendoing well this season and TommyWright deserves enormous praise for thestyle and organisation of the team.

There is a strength and determinationabout the men from Perth, but we haveto be stronger and more tenacious if wehave any hopes of winning the game. Its about time that we picked up threepoints and, with your terrific support,

we will be doing everything we possiblycan to secure our first League winin ages.

Thanks for your passion andcommitment to Hibernian Football Club -enjoy the game.

    06 THE AWAY END

    AWAYENDThis afternoon we welcome

the players, officials andsupporters of St Johnstone

to Easter Road Stadiumfor todays crucial Scottish

    Premiership encounter.

St Johnstone, in sixth spot, arrive in Leith this afternoonaiming to put more ground

    between them and seventh-

placed Hibernian, whilst forthe Hibees it is an opportunity

to close the gap between theclubs to just one point.

Boss Tommy Wright hassuccessfully made the step

up from assistant to managerand he recorded a famousEuropean victory away to

Rosenborg in his first match incharge.

The team from Perth startedthe season in fine formknocking Norwegian giants

Rosenborg out of the EuropaLeague before a heart-

breaking loss to FC Minsk sawthe team eliminated from the

    competition.

Making only subtle changesto the side following the

departure of former boss SteveLomas to Millwall, Wright

kept the nucleus of the teamtogether.

The former Northern Ireland keeperre-signed Fraser Wright and midfielderMurray Davidson after the pairs contractsended whilst also recruiting DavidWotherspoon and Gary MacDonald.

Wright continues to reshape the squadand recently added Lee Croft to hissquad, although the winger is unlikely tostart this afternoon as he is short ofmatch fitness.

After an opening day Scottish Premiershipvictory over Heart of Midlothian, St

Johnstone drew with Kilmarnock beforethrashingRoss County.

St Johnstone were favourites going intotheir match with Hibs back in Septemberand took the lead through a typicallyclinical finish from Stevie May before theHibees hit back through Paul Heffernanand James Collins to take maximumpoints.

Since then their results for St Johnstonehave been largely inconsistent with everymorale boosting victory quickly followedby a confidence sapping loss.

St Johnstone were looking to get backto winning ways last weekend followinga home defeat to Aberdeen only fortheir match away to Partick Thistle to beabandoned at half-time after the pitchbecame unplayable.

Former Ulster Football of the YearAlan Mannus had to be patient for

his opportunity at McDiarmid Park, but the departure of then number one,Peter Enckelman, gave him his chance.Mannus hasnt looked back since and hisexcellent form has seen him earn a recallfor the Northern Ireland national side. The former Shamrock Rovers stopper haskept an incredible 10 clean sheets in just20 appearances this term.

Club captain Dave MacKay has earneda fearsome reputation for his no nonsensestyle of defending. Never one to shirk

a tackle, the combative 33-year-old hasbeen a fans favourite since joining fromLivingston four years ago. As well asbeing a more than capable defender,Mackay is known to pitch in with goals

from time to time and scored a fantasticfree kick against Hibs a couple of yearsago.

After progressing through the youthacademy at Falkirk, Tam Scobbie becamea mainstay of the Bairns side and madeover 180 appearances for the club.He joined St Johnstone in 2012 underfreedom of contract but has only started tohold down a first team place this season.

The full-back can also operate in a centraldefensive role.

St Johnstone moved swiftly during thesummer to tie up Gary McDonald afterthe player rejected a new contractwith League Two outfit Morecambe.Becoming new manager Wrights firstsigning, Irvine-born McDonald started hiscareer with Kilmarnock before going onto play for Oldham Athletic, Aberdeenand Hamilton Academical before his two

    year stint with Morecambe.

Former Kilmarnock defender FraserWright was brought to Perth to replacepowerhouse Michael Duberry in 2011.The left-sided central defender had spentsix-years with Kilmarnock following a step-up from Stranraer and was mainstay oftheir side during that time. Since joiningthe Saints he has been the heart of thedefence. His one and only goal for St

Johnstone proved to be the winning goalagainst Ross County last season.

Following an injury to first team regularSteven Anderson, St Johnstone bossWright moved to sign veteran defenderSanel Jahic on a short-term deal. The31-year-old has 31 caps for World Cupbound Bosnia and was released byTurkish club Karabukspor in the summerhaving previously played for Sochaux,Zeljeznicar, Las Palmas, Merida, ArisThessaloniki, AEK Athens andAPOEL Nicosia.

Former Celtic youngster Chris Millar is ahugely influential and consistent performerin the middle of the park, yet his play

rarely gets the recognition it deserves. Aplayers player, Millar has made almost200 appearances for the club sincejoining in 2008 after five years withMorton. He last netted a league goal for

St Johnstone in March 2010 when hisside defeated Rangers 4-1 in Perth.

Despite numerous approaches to theclub over the last few years, influentialmidfielder Murray Davidson hasremained with St Johnstone. The 25-year-old is an old fashioned box-to-boxmidfielder and his well-timed runs into thepenalty area will present the Hiberniandefence with a threat. The former

Livingston player has been on the fringesof the national side for a number of yearsand earned his one full cap in the 2-1victory over Luxembourg in late 2012.

Welsh winger Gwion Edwards will behoping for an opportunity to impressthis afternoon after finding appearancesdifficult to come by this term. The20-year-old returned to Perth this summeron a six-month loan deal from SwanseaCity after he spent time with the club lastseason. Edwards scored his only goalso far for St Johnstone during the clubs3-0 League Cup victory over HamiltonAcademical earlier this term.

The list of clubs interested in signing StevieMay is almost as long as the strikers hair. The 21-year-old has scored 12 goals sofar this season including one against Hibsthe last time the clubs met back in mid-September. Strong, quick and confident,May made his Saints debut towards theend of the 2008/2009 campaign, buthe benefited greatly from his time spenton loan with Alloa Athletic and Hamilton

Academical. One man who will need no introductionto the Hibernian support this afternoonis midfielder David Wotherspoonwho returns to Easter Road for the firsttime following his summer departure.Wotherspoon came through the youthranks with Hibs and played in the clubsdouble winning under-19 team beforebreaking into the first team during JohnHughes tenure. The 23-year-old, whocomes from Bridge of Earn, scored on his

debut against St Mirren and went on tomake 154 appearances for Hibs beforejoining his hometown club, St Johnstone.

    HEALTH,FITNESS ANDWELLBEING ATEASTER ROAD

Dedicated to helping peopleget fit and achieve personal

health goals over a 12 weekcourse, Healthy Hibee is the

latest physical activity andnutrition programme offered

by the Hibernian CommunityFoundation. Building on thegreat successes of FootballFans in Training (FFIT) andFit for Change, Hibernian

is leading SPFL Clubs by alsooffering fitness and nutrition

    education for female fansand families.

The Healthy Hibee coaches encouragepeople to lead a positive lifestyle andintegrate healthy eating and physicalactivity into daily life. People aresupported to monitor basic healthindicators like blood pressure, heartrate, weight, waist circumference andprovided practical information to makehealthier choices.

Operations Manager Stewart McGuireis responsible for the Health, Fitnessand Wellbeing work of the Foundationand says: In a number of ourprogrammes we see that when you helppeople to engage with their health thebenefits are great. We see people getmore engaged with exercise and withnutrition, and they begin to pay moreattention to their health generally.

Weve had people say they wantto make some adjustments to theireating habits so we provide nutritioninformation. Weve also had peoplecome along who want to get fitter andwe help them with different kinds ofphysical activity. Some people wantto manage their weight, and somepeople just want to get more exercise we want to support them to achievetheir own goals, not ours, and that ishappening. In the first six weeks ofHealthy Hibee, weve seen peoplelose as much as five kilograms and getconsistent with their exercise. This is justwhat the programme is about we areseeing great results.

So far the mens group lost a total of19kg and 48cm around their waistand the womens group lost a total of9.7kg and 51.5cm around their waist.Importantly, both men and women arenow aware of their blood pressurewhere they had not been before andsome have been referred to their GPsfor additional monitoring as needed.

Every member receives a pedometerand a workbook in which to log theiractivities and measurements so progressover the 12 weeks can be seen. The90 minute sessions include lessons

about food groups, healthy eating orthe adverse effects of drinking andfatty foods alongside physical activitythat includes walking, circuit training, running and yoga.

Weight loss or nutrition improvementis a personal journey toward betterhealth, and the coaches are there toprovide support to get people started.Healthy Hibee is an opportunity toconnect fans with Hibernian FootballClub in a unique way. People becomepart of a team with shared interests

and similar goals, and they are ableto provide encouragement to eachother as they make individual progresstogether.

McGuire said: We want to engagewith our fan base and offer moreopportunities for people to livehealthier lives. Our health and fitnessprogrammes are a success becausepeople engage with the information, have a good bit of fun, but begin totake their health seriously. They can dothat as part of the Club they love.

    JO

    RDONFORSTE

    R

Jordon Forster says heis enjoying Hibernian

life at the moment the20-year-old has recentlyagreed a new two-and-a-half-year contract andhas also started the last

    six games.

Moving from centre-halfto right-back at Celtic

    Park last weekend,Forster showed ample

versatility and now sayshe wants to press on and

    establish himself in thestarting line-up.

    Forster said: Its going

well for me at themoment; Ive startedthe last six games andnow I want to properly

    establish myself inthe team.

My aim is to become aregular in the starting

line-up and to continueto work hard, so that

I can improve andhelp the team moving

    forward.

After growing upnear Gorgie and withLithuanian ancestry,

Forster jokes he shouldprobably play for

Hearts, but stresses hebelieves he is playingfor the right team in

    Edinburgh.

    HIBERNIAN

    INTERVIEW

    THE HIBERNIAN INTERVIEW11

Forster said: It is a strangecoincidence; I grew up in Slatefordand my great grandparents werefrom Lithuania, but Im glad Im overthis side of the city I love playingfor Hibs.

Therefore it was fitting that his seniordebut for Hibernian was an EdinburghDerby at Tynecastle which ended in adramatic win; something Forster sayshe will always remember.

He added: To make my debut forHibs in an Edinburgh Derby in frontof 17,000 supporters and win wassomething that I will never forget.

The fact it was Tynecastle too a ground that I had walked pasthundreds of times before

was special.I found out I was playing the daybefore; it all came about quitesuddenly. But there was no time toget nervous and the adrenaline gotme through.

The older lads in the team were greatand helped me through it and I justconcentrated on playing well andhelping the team to win.

I dont think my debut couldve goneany better and it was one of the

best feelings Ive ever experienced, apart from walking out with Hibs atHampden.

Forster also attended Boroughmuir, where the greatest Hibee of them all,Lawrie Reilly went to school, and saysif he can emulate a fraction of whatthe former Scotland internationalistsachieved he will be satisfied.

He said: Its inspiring to know thatLawrie Reilly came from the samearea as me and went to the sameschool. If I can in any way emulate theachievements of such a great playerthen I will be doing alright.

After starting off his youth career atCeltic, Forster, who was with North

Merchiston Boys Club, moved toHibernians Academy in the summerof 2010.

Forster says the fact everything didntwork out for him at Celtic gave him anextra incentive to try and make it work

at Hibernian. He said: It wasnt going to happenfor me at Celtic. Hibs were the firstclub that came in for me and aftera trial match I joined the under-19squad that proved to be a brilliantmove.

Forster progressed well at youth levelbefore being sent out to BerwickRangers on loan during the secondhalf of the 2011/12 season.

The centre-half then spent part of last

season on loan at East Fife and hebelieves both spells helped to educatehim about the demands of playingprofessional football.

He said: At Berwick, the main thingwas about getting to grips with thephysical side of game. There wasalso the pressure of playing first teamfootball in the league.

Then East Fife was a higher level, butthere were similar challenges. Thatwas against better players and the

football was faster and stronger. It was all part of a learning processthat I hoped would lead on to playingfor Hibs in the top division andthankfully that is what happened.

His performances merited a chanceat first team level with Hibernianand Forster seized his opportunity;culminating in a starting spot inthe 2013 Scottish Cup Finalagainst Celtic.

Forster admits the speed of his rise

up Scottish footballs ladder even tookhim by surprise, but says he enjoyedevery minute of it.

He said: To go from playing gamesin front of a couple of hundred people

at Methil to playing at a full-house atHampden was surreal.

I had always been taught to treatevery game the same and I believethe grounding Id received both atBerwick and East Fife helped me to

tackle the challenge of playing in frontof 50,000.

There were 25,000 Hibs fans thereand that experience will live with meforever. Football is the best sport inthe world and that day, apart from theresult, was memorable.

When Terry Butcher was installed asmanager, Forster sought the advice ofhis agent, Trevor Steven Butchersformer England team-mate, who toldthe teenager the new boss would be

the perfect appointment. He said: Trevor said: This isprobably the best thing that couldvehappened to you he will bring youon leaps and bounds as a player.

Terry and Maurice are both energeticand enthusiastic they have broughtfreshness to the place.

Im learning off them both and thatcan only benefit me and the team asa whole.

    Forster believes that todays match

against St Johnstone against EasterRoad could be the fixture that sparksoff a transformation in Hibernianshome record.

He said: We are approaching thisgame positively. We know that ourrecord at home hasnt been great, butweve got a good mentality and spirit.

We showed that against PartickThistle that, even when things aregoing against us, we are prepared towork hard to earn a result. If we keep

on doing that we can win at hometoday and then carry on winningat home.

    GLORIOUS IN GREEN & WHITE:

    ERICSTEVENSONA wily winger, who was

During the 1960s, the sightof the dark-haired number

Known universally as Stevie,he had been born in Lanarkshire, but had moved to Midlothianwhen he was seven and he

spent most of his boyhoodSaturdays on the Easter

    Road terraces.

Standing with the rest ofthe Bonnyrigg Hibs Branch

underneath the scoreboard,Stevenson watched the heroics ofthe all-conquering Famous Five

    with wide-eyed admiration.

Stevenson said: Ive never beenparticularly ambitious, but when I wasgrowing up the only ambition I everhad, and I dreamed about it everynight, was to play for the Hibs.

But Stevensons journey towards makinghis dream of playing for his boyhoodidols a reality was almost derailedearly on.

Playing his juvenile football for Edina

Hearts, who were a feeder team forthe Tynecastle club, Stevenson, aprodigious talent, mistakenly thought hehad agreed a contract with Heartof Midlothian.

When it transpired that the teenageStevenson was free to sign foranother professional club, hisavailability attracted offers from bothWolverhampton Wanderers andManchester United.

    Uniteds Jimmy Murphy, the man

responsible for nurturing the likes ofBobby Charlton and George Best, evenvisited the Stevenson family home inBonnyrigg to persuade young Ericto sign.

But that grand gesture wouldnt swayStevensons decision because there wasonly ever one team that he wanted toplay for, his beloved Hibs.

He said: In my opinion, Hibs were asbig a club as Manchester United and Ithought I was joining the best club

in Britain.Imbued with an adventurous streak andverve, Stevensons early progress inthe reserves, under the watchful eye ofEddie Turnbull, was eye-catching andhe broke through to the fringe of the firstteam in 1960/61.

As a 17-year-old, Stevenson stood infor fellow youngster Davie Gibson atinside-left and made his debut alongsidefellow newcomers Ronnie Simpsonand Sammy Baird in a 2-0 loss at St

Johnstone.Even though Stevenson was widelyrecognised as a comprehensivelytalented young forward, he struggled to

dislodge all-time great Willie Ormondfrom the outside-left slot to begin with.

Waiting in the wings for an opportunityto establish himself on Hibernians leftwing, Stevenson developed his all-round game thanks to the advice andguidance provided by Ormond.

Only a couple of years before,Stevenson had queued up for Ormondsautograph and now he was being

mentored by him. That provided Stevenson with a first-class football education and the perfectplatform on which to build a long-termHibernian career.

Absorbing the invaluable tips given byboth Ormond and Turnbull, Stevensonkept on improving and scored his firstgoal in a 4-0 win over Clyde inApril 1961.

Then the teenager with the distinctivequiff was given the ultimate stage toparade his skills the Fairs Cup semi-final third game decider against ASRoma at the Stadio Flaminio.

After the opening two legs, the teamswere locked 5-5 on aggregate and athird match was required to determinethe winner, which was staged at the endof May 1961 almost a month after theScottish League season had ended.

Hibernians preparation was furtherdisrupted when Joe Baker handed in atransfer request at the beginning of Mayand Ormond refused to agree anew contract.

So Stevenson was ushered into the sideto replace Ormond, who later joinedFalkirk in the summer, for what provedto be Roman tragedy for Hibs.

In an ill-tempered match littered withcontroversial incidents, Stevenson wasfouled by Roma defender Giacomo Losiin the box, but Bobby Kinlochs resultantpenalty was saved.

That moment proved to be the onlyglimmer of hope as Hibernian wereoverpowered by the Italians, whorecorded a 6-0 victory.

    ERIC STEVENSON 15

The 1961/62 season saw Stevensonhanded a regular run of starts, albeit invarious roles in the forward-line.

Ally MacLeod was signed fromBlackburn Rovers as Ormondsreplacement at outside-left, so Stevensonably filled in on the right alongside hisclose friend and fellow youngsterJim Scott.

    Hugh Shaws resignation in November

1961 was followed by the appointmentof Walter Galbraith into the managersoffice at Easter Road and Hibernianfinished the season in mid-table.

Nevertheless Stevenson had provenhis value to the team scoring animpressive 13 goals, the first of fiveseasons where he reached double-figures for Hibs in the goal charts.

The Easter Road crowd developed a softspot for Stevie there was a touch ofstar quality about him and for a decade

he entertained royally. His flashes of brilliance proved to bea rare guiding light during a difficultperiod in the clubs history and duringthe 1962/63 campaign Hiberniannarrowly avoided relegation.

At that stage, Hibs were a distinctlyaverage side for which the road toresurrection looked long and hard.

After Galbraith stepped down in March1964, Jock Stein was placed in chargea month later and the quest for awinning blend was achieved.

Big Jock led Hibs out of the mire andbrought some glory back to Leith.

Stevenson featured in HiberniansSummer Cup win over Aberdeen inSeptember 1964 and was also in thesquad that defeated Real Madrid in aprestigious friendly at Easter Road amonth later.

Supplying the crosses for centre-forwardNeil Martin and linking beautifully

with lavishly gifted inside left WillieHamilton, Stevenson was excellent andrevelled in wrong-footing opponentswith a dip of his shoulder.

In November 1964, Hibernian signed left-backJoe Davis, who assumed the role of penalty-taker. Stevenson would win the spot-kicksand Davis would score them 39 in justfour seasons.

In February 1965, Stein, who had moved toCeltic, was replaced by Bob Shankly, whocontinued to utilise the elegant ball skillsof Stevenson.

Arguably his most memorable performance forHibernian was against Hamilton at Easter Roadon the day after Bonfire Night 1965 when heproduced an explosive performance.

Scoring a hat-trick in an 11-1 win over Accies,Stevenson, so often the provider, turned chiefgoalscorer for the day and thoroughly enjoyedthe moment.

Selected to represent the Scottish Leaguein September 1969, how Stevensonsperformances never merited a full cap with thenational team remains an unsolved mystery.

A born crowd-pleaser, Stevenson displayed adelightful change of pace, neat footwork andreliable crossing ability he was heaven sent.

Even in the most cramped situations and againstthe toughest full-back, Stevenson would use hisperfect balance to wrong-foot his marker anddrift past his opponents with deceptive ease.

He left to join Ayr United in 1971 and evenwent AWOL at Somerset Park in order to see hisbeloved Hibs lift the League Cup at Hampden inDecember 1972. Stevie was a Hibs supporter

first, a footballer second.Deservedly inducted into Hibernians Hallof Fame in 2012, it was apt Stevensonscontribution, 79 goals in 390 appearances, was recognised.

He was blessed with a left foot like a magicwand and most observers appreciated thatEric Stevenson was one of the finest wingers inHibernians history. He loved Hibs and he wasan absolute treat to watch.
