The Jubel Family

Henry A. Jubel, who immigrated to the United States from Germany with his family, enrolled at Washington University in 1936.

A scholarship, his mother cleaning homes, and working several jobs allowed him to earn a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering in 1940. He launched his own business, Spartan Aluminum Products, in Sparta, Ill., in 1961, building it into a highly successful manufacturing company. The School of Engineering honored him with its Alumni Achievement Award in 1997.

Henry Jubel established the Spartan Light Metal Products, Inc. Scholarship in 1998. Since then, the Jubels and their company have endowed additional scholarships in the engineering school. Henry’s son Donald, BS ’73, and his wife Karen sponsor an annual scholarship in engineering as well.

The Jubel family’s history has been intertwined with Washington University for generations. Don and his daughter Lindsey, BS ’09, MS ’09, are both mechanical engineering graduates of Washington University. Like his father, Don Jubel received an Alumni Achievement Award from the engineering school, in 2008. He also received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 2010. Don served as the chair of the 2013–14 Alumni Board of Governors.

The Henry A. Jubel Eliot Society Challenge was created in memory of a loyal and generous Washington University engineering alumnus. This challenge is funded through the Henry A. Jubel Foundation whose mission is to support young people seeking to improve their lives through higher education. The legacy of Henry A.
