Zumba

Zumba is a dance and fitness programme created by Columbian dance and choreographer Alberto “Beto” Perez during the 1990s. The music primarily comes from Latino influences such as Cumbia, Salsa, Merengue, Flamenco, Cha Cha, Reggaeton, Soca, Samba, etc. It is a casual workout full of energy. There is no right or wrong

way to do Zumba, as long as you move to the beat of the music, you’re exercising and burning calories. It is also a good way to increase your self‑confidence and relieve stress.

No previous experience in dance or fitness is required.

romAn BritAin

When Britain became part of the expansive Roman Empire, it was expected that the inhabitants would adopt the Roman way of life, but just how much did life change for them during this time? This course explores how emperors such as Caesar, Claudius and hadrian attempted to conqueror a nation and what effect this had on the native population. How much resistance was there like Boudicca’s rebellion and to what extent was there willing Romanisation?

No previous knowledge is needed and hand‑outs will be provided.

dArk Age BritAin

Far from being a time of stagnation, the dark Ages in Britain were a time of continuing rebirth with the fluidity of the influx of new cultures. After leaving the Roman Empire, the native Britons forged their national identities following the arrival of the Anglo-Saxons. Kingdoms developed and Alfred the great made a last stand against the Vikings which would lead to the unification of England. The Vikings did eventually take control, only to lose it and with the death of harold, the last Anglo-Saxon king, the Normans were victorious.

No previous knowledge is needed and hand‑outs will be provided.

history

shAkespeAre’s use of history in his plAys

Shakespeare’s characterisation of kings like Henry V and Richard III have played a part in shaping our perceptions of these historical figures, but just how historically accurate was he and why did he write a significant number of plays based in the medieval era? This course will explore what led Shakespeare to focus on English history and how he used it to illustrate the themes of kingship and power, with the main focus on how his work relates to history rather than a study of the plays (although key scenes will be referenced). No previous knowledge is needed.

Please bring note‑taking materials.

tudor propAgAndA And the royAl imAge

In 1485 the defeat of Richard III by Henry VII at Bosworth heralded the start of the Tudor dynasty. This course focuses on the ways in which the Tudors used visual imagery such as pageantry and portraits to influence public opinion and how through Henry VIII the royal image changed. From the symbolism of the Tudor Rose to Elizabeth I portraying herself as Gloriana, the public image of the Tudors and the history behind it will be studied. No previous knowledge is needed for the course, just an interest in this period of history.

Please bring note‑taking materials; hand‑outs will be provided.

getting stArted in digitAl photogrAphy

This beginners’ course in Photography will help you better understand the basics

of your camera’s functions – how it works and what possibilities are open to you by taking the control dial out of ‘Auto’. This is especially pertinent with modern digital cameras and their ‘one-click’, ‘zoom lenses’ ‘scene selection’ and ‘do-it-all-for-you’ modes. The camera’s functions are described in detail and what their individual purpose is in relation to the art of photography. Through a series of visual presentations, combining theory with practical exercises (completed outside of the class-room), you will learn the fundamental approaches to capturing and creating great imagery through basic composition and understanding your camera’s controls.

photogrAphy

expAnd your digitAl photogrAphy

This course will further enhance your ability and basic techniques. It will also

encourage you to use the full capabilities of your digital camera with a series of interesting and stimulating tasks that are completed week on week outside of the classroom. Through visual presentations, combining theory with practical exercises and application, you will learn more about the varied areas of photography from documentary and landscape to basic portraiture. This is an ideal course for those that are familiar with how to use their camera and would like to experiment more.

creAtive photogrAphy

The Creative Photography course is suitable for photographers at all levels

of experience; all you need is a digital camera with manual exposure controls (either SLR or mirror-less system). Each session combines some theory with slideshows and a practical workshop where students will take photographs, putting what we have learned into practice. We also look at infl uential practitioners from the past to inspire and inform our own photography.

Two hours of guided photography in the fi eld is included in this course. One session will be added on a weekend.

photoshop for photogrAphers

For anyone interested in learning how to edit, enhance and output their digital

photographs. We use the full version of Adobe photoshop, however those using alternative software will fi nd the course useful to expand general knowledge and skills in image editing. In addition to editing techniques such as brightness, contrast and colour correction, we will discuss aspects of the digital image such as resolution, raw processing and fi le types. Please bring a USB drive of at least 2 GB.
