That’s according to the first-ever Canadian Infrastructure Report Card released this week by the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) and three industry partner organizations. FCM’s report card surveyed more than 120 municipalities representing 60% of the Canadian population and states that more than half of municipal roads are falling apart beneath our tires. Additionally, the report indicates that one in four roads is over capacity, transporting far more people and goods than it was designed to handle. And one in four wastewater treatment plants needs to be upgraded or replaced to meet new federal standards introduced this summer, at a cost of at least $20 billion. The Heavy News Weekly Manitoba Heavy Construction Association’s President, Chris Lorenc, says FCM’s report clearly demonstrates a link between infrastructure investment and Canada’s economic health. "Today our municipality infrastructure is 'at risk' according to the FCM. With neglect, tomorrow, it will be beyond financial reach to repair, and with that, so goes our quality of life.” Continued on page 2...

FCM report card says Canada's municipal infrastructure 'at risk'Canada's municipal infrastructure is ‘at risk’ with more than half of municipal roads requiring significant repairs and one in four wastewater plants needing major upgrades.

Additionally, the report indicates that one in four roads is over capacity, transporting far more

people and goods than it was designed to handle. And one in four wastewater treatment plants needs to be upgraded or replaced to meet new federal standards introduced this summer, at a cost of at least $20 billion.

Manitoba Heavy Construction Association’s President, Chris Lorenc, says FCM’s report clearly demonstrates a link between infrastructure investment and Canada’s economic health. "Today our municipality infrastructure is 'at risk' according to the FCM. With neglect, tomorrow, it will be beyond financial reach to repair, and with that, so goes our quality of life.”

FCM’s report card also shows that core municipal infrastructure, like roads and water systems, are assets vital to Canadian communities. Without immediate improvement and ongoing maintenance, the cost of fixing or replacing the assets will explode over the next decade.

"Two billion dollars in federal funding for local governments is going to lapse by March 2014," says FCM President, Karen Leibovici. "The new federal long-term infrastructure plan is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to put our essential infrastructure back on solid ground. Municipalities are ready to work with all partners - federal, provincial, territorial, and the private sector - to fix the problem once and for all."

Cities, utilities can harness data - The Star Phoenix (Regina, SK) - (August 31, 2012) " John Longbottom learned about infrastructure maintenance the hard way. Surviving sinkhole 'miracle': driver - The Citizen (Ottawa, ON) - (September 10, 2012) "As the City of Gatineau dealt with two new sink holes, and Ottawa east-end traffic was still a mess because of the first one on Highway 174, Juan Pedro Unger was preparing to return to work Monday after one of the most frightening and incredible experiences an Ottawa driver has been through. Over the weekend, city work crews finally pulled Unger’s car out of the sinkhole where it had fallen four days earlier, with him inside it..." MHCA President, Chris Lorenc, attended the 2012 National Infrastructure Summit in Regina, Saskatchewan this week hosted by Regina Mayor Pat Fiacco. The summit is being held to bring leaders together to seek municipal infrastructure solutions. "Investing in infrastructure is an investment in our economy,” says Lorenc. "If we don’t work together to find solutions to our infrastructure deficit at summits like this, then we threaten our economy's stability and the ability to remain competitive.”

As stated in this week’s FCM Report Card on Infrastructure, municipalities everywhere are reporting that their infrastructure is ‘at risk’, with municipal roads, bridges, water systems; and community facilities requiring upgrades and repairs.

Winnipeg Mayor, Sam Katz, also at this week’s Summit says, "Unfortunately, much of Winnipeg's infrastructure was built more than 60 years ago. Without immediate attention, the

cost of fixing these assets will balloon out of reach for the generations to follow us." The Mayor noted that only eight cents of every tax dollar collected in Winnipeg flows to the municipality.

"Europe’s Self-Inflicted Recession" by Peter G. Hall - Economic Development Canada - (September 13, 2012)

"For those who dine on dismal developments, Europe is serving up a feast. Data last week confirmed that the dreaded double-dip is indeed in full swing. As appetizing as this latest dish might have been to the media, dismal scientists and the Eeyores of the world, it was virtually ignored...."

CON0812001

Earlier this year we decided to restructure our organization - a change we are confident will provide a more strategic foundation for us to better meet our customers’ needs.

Toromont CAT has maintained the same basic structure since 1993, and during this time the company has undergone incredible growth. We felt the need to restructure our company to more effectively support our customers and the industries and market segments that we serve – Construction, Resources and Power Systems.

Our new organizational structure is also now more closely aligned with Caterpillar, the manufacturer that we proudly represent. This change will position us to more effectively collaborate within our business units, and with Caterpillar, providing greater accessibility to the products, people and support needed to meet and exceed our customers’ expectations.
