NEWSLETTER
As all of us who work in tourism know, the next 8 to 10 weeks are critically important, not only in sustaining and growing our industry, but also realising the potential of this important sector to create jobs and sustain tourism-related livelihoods in our city.
BC Tourism has been hard at work throughout the year, alongside our many tourism partners, to prepare for the summer season. We have travelled extensively throughout the country, and indeed around the world, to promote the Buffalo City brand, and we’ve utilised every platform available to us to communicate the bounty of our tourism offerings.
Now it’s up to you, and we call on all product owners, tour operators and other tourism stakeholders to unite in making this the best season ever. As has often been pointed out, tourism is a team sport. We all benefit from it, but we all have to contribute to making it a vibrant and lucrative industry that benefits our city.
Let’s show the rest of the country, and the world, why Buffalo City is a must-visit.

BERLIN NOVEMBER
2015 will see the second edition of the Eastern Cape’s flagship traditional horse racing and lifestyle event on 28 November 2015, with lots of scintillating attractions awaiting revelers.
Dubbed the Berlin November, spectators and participants alike are in for an entertainment extravaganza raging from traditional horse racing of different distances, fashion shows, craft stalls, music festival, food court and children’s village.
The event is the last of the province wide Premier Horse Racing League, which starts in districts who then qualify for participation in the Finale. About 240 horses will come from districts while 20 is reserved for other provinces such as KZN, Free State, Northern Cape, Lesotho etc.
According to Luthando Bara, the founder of the League “Due to huge demand for participation we have increased participation to 260 participants, beyond this number we will have to stage the race in two days” We have discussed this issue with the districts and agreed on the limit. About 4 of % districts have already staged their qualifying race. A total of R310 000 prize money is at stake while districts will compete for a R60 000 stake for the overall top 3.
This means that the Finale will see only the top, fast, agile and well conditioned horses participate, he added.
Leading a high powered entertainment line-up are multi-award winning hip hop artists Khuli Chana, Heavy K, Dj Vetkoek vs Mahoota, Maggz & Moozlie, WTF, and a sizzling local line-up featuring PK, Mfundisi, Etv’s Dj Shony, Lungaz, Kingwave, Yoba, Jigga, Tonic Blackman and Charlie Deesptar and many. There will be a dedicated craft hub where locals can ply their trade.
Bara said the Berlin November which takes place on 28 November, at the Berlin race course confirmed that “planning is full steam ahead and the wait is almost over – social media is abuzz with this event which is set to revitalise the economy of the area, grow the sport tourism. Our ultimate goal is to monetize horse racing to a tool to fight growing poverty, promoting small town regeneration and rural development, local economic development and job creation.
Local revelers can hob-nob with the rich and famous, leading government officials and captains of industry in the VIP village which will boast various marquees going for prime. “All these elements are traditionally associated with a discerning lifestyle for individuals who have an appetite for luxury but we are bringing these to the doorstep of locals at an affordable rate” added Bara.
“This year we have curated an event with a rich tapestry of VIP lounges, contemporary design couture, entertainment and gourmet food. We are offering a best in class experience which is unrivalled in the Eastern Cape and there is growing interest from the private sector to use the facility on the day for their year-end functions. With looming budget cuts this event offers a celebrity spectacle, loads of fun while you can indulge privately with our various VIP marque options” concluded Bara.
The event races starts in the morning and runs until 15:30 with a short award ceremony to the best jockey and overall winner. The action packed music festival will proceed until the morning. Tickets at Computicket, Checkers and ExAfrica Lounge in Quigney.

One of the most important ways in which we can all contribute to a successful season, and to entice our visitors to return year after year, is to ensure that each and every tourist has a positive and memorably experience. This begins and ends with a commitment to service excellence – which is why tourism bodies around the world are prioritising service charters as a critical tool towards growth and sustainability.
What does this mean for Buffalo City business owners and tourism partners? According to the national Department of Tourism’s Service Excellence Requirements, a positive tourism experience hinges on the following key components:
• Professionalism and training of staff in service proficiencies
• Value for money
• Flexibility and choice of products and services
• Professional interaction with guests
• Guest-focused attitude (staff and management)
• Guest-centred processes (systems and processes)
• Efficient service recovery
• Service Excellence-orientated organisational behaviour
• Constructive peer reviewing
Cultivating a culture of service excellence in your tourism business - regardless of the nature of your business - is dependent on getting complete buy-in from all staff.
6-Point Service Excellence Game Plan
• Sit with your employees to discuss what your business and service goals are, how they can contribute and what the likely benefits are to all concerned for trying to be better at what you do.
• Together with them, develop a ‘Service Promise’, or similar, which captures a shared vision of what you all want to achieve in terms of service quality.
• Communicate that promise widely to employees and customers.
• Allocate individual responsibilities for elements of the drive towards service excellence.
• Set clear service goals (collective and individual) to provide tangible targets related to your service promise
• Discuss service quality at every meeting or briefing you ever have, make it the norm to talk about the service promise, and don’t only focus on service issues when something ‘goes wrong’.
Together, we can begin to unlock Buffalo City’s vast tourism potential, and elevate our beautiful region to its rightful place as a global tourist destination.
Our final newsletter for 2015, which will be distributed at the end of November, will contain all the latest information on our December events calendar, and give more detail on each of the headlining events mentioned above.
Good luck with your seasonal preparations, and remember: Tourism is a team sport. Let’s work together to put Buffalo City on the map.
