AAUW—HIBBING BRANCH 2013/14 CALENDAR
AAUW Hibbing branch is celebrating its 90th anniversary. The September 19th meeting will kick-off the celebration. The branch will share stories about special people and events from its past, while introducing the branch story to new and prospective members. Each edition of the Heart of the Arrowhead will feature “from the Files of
AAUW”, a section symbolized by the eyeglasses and files. Here you will find pieces of AAUW-Hibbing’s past and current information about AAUW. Current, new and prospective members will have an opportunity to read and be-come informed about AAUW.
What is AAUW? It’s a question asked frequently. Its mission: “Advancing equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy, and research”, is very clear.
How does AAUW fulfill its Mission? AAUW uses its mission statement through the areas of Research, Campus Leadership Programs, STEM Education, Public Policy, the Legal Advocacy Fund, Educational Funding and Awards, Global Connections, and Member Focused Leadership. The impact of these areas is vast. $4.3 million has been awarded in fellowships and grants to support 278 women in their professional and academic
careers is 2012 alone. 1200 congressional office visits to protect college access and affordability, reauthorize VAMA, prevent bullying
and harassment, pass the Pay check Fairness Act, and eliminate workplace discrimination. 140 college campuses reached with $tart $mart salary negotiation workshops.
How does AAUW-Hibbing follow AAUW’s Mission? The Hibbing branch focused its attention to a scholar-ship program and has provided thousands of dollars in college scholarship awards to women and girls. It has done so, most notably, from the proceeds of its annual Book sale. The Hibbing branch has also sponsored educational and in-formative events and contributes to AAUW’s Educational Foundation and Legal Advocacy Fund which helps ensure continued research about women’s issues and legal assistance to women.
November 28, 1881 Founders meet
Marion Talbot and Ellen Richards meet in Boston with 15 alumnae representing eight colleges to discuss the needs of college-educated women. In addition to broadening opportunities and assisting other women in higher education, they discuss the formation of the Association of Collegiate Alumnae.
1885 First research report issued
The Association of Collegiate Alumnae issues its first research report in conjunction with the Massachusetts Bureau of Statistics of Labor. The report, Health Statistics of Women College Graduates, establishes that, contrary to popular belief, women’s health is not adversely affected by attending college.

Heart of the Arrowhead: AAUW-Hibbing branch newsletter is compiled by Jan Carey and member contributors. c2013.
This is a special year for the Hibbing Branch of AAUW. It marks our 90th anniver-sary. The branch was recognized at the AAUW Minnesota State Convention. To further the recognition and celebrate branch achievements, plans are evolving and may include an array of events and news information which will be published locally and regionally. Thus far: 1. Jan Carey has contacted local newspapers to run articles with a desire for Jack
Lynch to use his History page for an AAUW feature. 2. Angel Lipke has asked all members to contribute stories and tidbits for the Sep- tember 19th meeting. 3. A special edition of Heart of the Northland may be published. 4. There will be a special salute during the membership drive meeting - September 19th. Inform new, prospective members what we're about - locally/nationally. 5. There will be cupcakes. But a big bash in December is still being pursued -
celebrating the entire 90th year. Invite all past members/officers/women who were awarded honorariums, all area branches, state officers. etc.
6. If members have photos from the past, please send them to Jan Carey. Stef Carlson & Jan Carey still need assistance. A 90th celebration needs member support, assistance and fresh, innovative ideas to make this a very special time. Please contact Stef ([email protected], 218-969-5516) or Jan ([email protected],
218-263-7159) ASAP. Thank you! Let’s Celebrate!
