BEARS -- BENGALS SERIES

THE SERIES: The Bears are playing the Bengals for just the 9th time since

Cincinnati joined the NFL in 1968 and trail in the all-time series, 5-3. The eight

previous regular-season matchups between the Bengals and Bears mark the

fewest games played in any series with Chicago involving teams which joined

the League prior to 1995 (Baltimore, Carolina, Jacksonville and Houston joined

the NFL in or after that year).

The Bears have won two of three contests played in Cincinnati with the last

meeting in The Queen City coming in 2001, a 24-0 shutout by Chicago.

The series began with wins by the Bengals in 1962 and 1970 that were fol-

lowed by Bears victories in 1986 and 1989. Cincinnati came back to win con-

secutive games against Chicago in 1992 and 1995. Chicago won the first

meeting between the teams at Paul Brown Stadium, 24-0, in 2001. Cincinnati

won the last overall contest between the teams in September of 2005, 24-7, at

Soldier Field.

Cincinnati 24, Chicago 7

Sunday, September 25, 2005 -- Soldier Field

CHICAGO -- In a matchup of the League's top offense against one of the NFL's stingiest

defenses, the Cincinnati Bengals topped the Chicago Bears 24-7 at Soldier Field in

Chicago.

The Bengals entered the contest averaging 462 yards per game offensively while the

Bears had allowed just 15 points in two games (7.5 ppg), which ranked fourth in the League.

Chicago's defense limited the Bengals to 244 yards on offense, 218 yards below their

season average, but six Chicago turnovers proved to be the difference in the game as the

Bears were forced to defend a short field much of the afternoon.

Bears rookie QB Kyle Orton threw five interceptions, the most by a Chicago quarterback

since 1968, and the Bengals 16 possessions began, on average, at their own 42-yard line.

Chicago's defense was up to the task most of the afternoon, forcing nine punts, three more

than Cincinnati's total in the first two games of the season combined.

The Bears defense forced a three-and-out on the game's first series and, following a

punt, the tone for the remainder of the afternoon was set. Orton fired a pass to Justin Gage

on the Bears first offensive play from scrimmage and the ball deflected off Gage into the

arms of Bengals LB Brian Simmons. Cincinnati's offense took over from the Chicago 18 and

on the very next play, Bengals QB Carson Palmer threw the first of his three touchdown

passes and WR Chad Ochocinco was on the receiving end of his first of two on the day.

Orton's second interception led to Cincinnati's second score. This time the Cincinnati

offense was set up at the Chicago 36. Palmer threw for the end zone on the drive's second

play and CB Charles Tillman was flagged for pass interference and the Bengals were

awarded a first-and-goal from the Chicago 3. Following a pass for one yard and a negative

rush, an offensive pass interference penalty backed the Bengals up to the Chicago 15

where they settled for a 33-yard Shayne Graham field goal and the first quarter would end

with Cincinnati maintaining a 10-0 advantage.

The Bears pieced together their longest drive of the first half with time winding down in

the second quarter. RB Thomas Jones began the drive with back-to-back carries of 17 and

16 yards before a personal foul penalty on WR Mark Bradley eventually stalled the drive at

the Cincinnati 21. K Doug Brien failed to convert a 39-yard field goal attempt to cap the six-

play drive and the score remained 10-0 at the half.

Cincinnati extended the lead to 17-0 midway through the third quarter. Following Orton's

fifth pick of the game, the Bengals drove 70 yards in seven plays capped by a 36-yard

Palmer touchdown pass to WR Chris Henry.

The Bears pieced together their longest drive of the day at the end of the third quarter,

bridging a 14-play, 70-yard drive into the fourth quarter capped by a two-yard Jones TD run

to cut the margin to 17-7. Orton completed four of eight passes for 44 yards while Jones

eclipsed the 100-yard mark for the second consecutive game during the drive.

The comeback was short-lived however as Cincinnati drove 62 yards in three plays on

the ensuing possession and scored on a 40-yard pass from Palmer to Johnson to put the

Bengals back up by 17 points at 24-7.

Orton completed two quick passes and four of six attempts to cross over into Cincinnati

territory on Chicago's ensuing drive, but, following a seven-yard completion to Bobby Wade,

CB Keiwan Ratliff knocked the ball loose at the Cincinnati 29 which was scooped up by

Deltha O'Neal to turn back the drive and preserve the win.

SMITH REACHES 50-WIN PLATEAU

With the Bears 48-24 victory over the Detroit Lions in Week 4,

Chicago Bears Head Coach Lovie Smith earned his 50 th

career victory with the franchise. Smith is 48-37 during the

regular season and 2-2 in the playoffs in his six-year tenure

with the team.

Smith became just the third head coach in franchise history

to reach the 50-win plateau joining Hall of Famers George

Halas (324) and Mike Ditka (112).

Smith is one of 11 current NFL coaches with at least 50 vic-

tories (including playoffs). He reached that plateau in just his

88th game, which is faster than Wade Phillips (92), Jack Del

Rio (92), Jeff Fisher (93), Marvin Lewis (102), Bill Belichick

(111), Norv Turner (111) and Dick Jauron (118). John Fox also

did it in 88 games, while Andy Reid (81) and Tom Coughlin

(83) got there quicker.

Smith has also reached the 50-win milestone in fewer

games than legendary NFL coaches Bill Parcells (89), Bill

Walsh (91), Chuck Noll (94) and Tom Landry (119).

Packers 21, Bears 15Lambeau Field (70,920)

Sunday , September 13, 2009

Green Bay 21, Chicago 15

Sunday, September 13, 2009 -- Lambeau Field

GREEN BAY, Wis. - Green Bay QB Aaron Rodgers faked a handoff on third-and-one and

lofted a 50-yard touchdown strike to WR Greg Jennings with 1:11 remaining in the contest

as the Packers defeated the Bears 21-15 in the 2009 regular season opener at Lambeau

Field. The touchdown pass came after Bears K Robbie Gould's second field goal, a 21-

yarder, capped a 14-play, 69-yard drive that burned 7:35 off the clock and gave the Bears

a 15-13 lead with just 2:35 left in the fourth quarter.

In his Bears debut, QB Jay Cutler threw for 277 yards on 17 of 35 passing with one

touchdown and four interceptions.

Cutler was intercepted on three of the Bears' first six possessions but the Chicago

defense held the Packers to 104 yards in the first half to keep the score at 10-2 heading into

the break. The Bears defense registered three first half sacks - two by DE Adewale

Ogunleye and one by Danieal Manning that resulted in a safety - and four for the contest.

But the Bears failed to generate a takeaway for the first time in 26 games, snapping the

longest active streak in the NFL.

After K Mason Crosby's 52-yard field goal had given the Packers a 3-0 lead midway

through the second quarter, Bears rookie WR Johnny Knox hauled in a 68-yard pass from

Cutler deep down the right sideline to the Green Bay 8. But on third-and-goal from the 8,

Cutler's screen pass intended for RB Matt Forté over the middle was picked off by Johnny

Jolly.

Three plays later, Manning chased down Rodgers in the end zone on a blitz, sacking the

Packers quarterback for a safety that drew the Bears to within 3-2 with 5:52 remaining in

the first half. But after the free kick, CB Tramon Williams returned a Cutler interception 67

yards to the Chicago 1. Packers RB Ryan Grant punched the ball into the end zone on the

next play to give the Packers a 10-2 lead with 4:36 left in the half.

In the second half Cutler tossed a 36-yard touchdown pass to Devin Hester and engi-

neered another scoring drive on the Bears' second possession as Gould's 47-yard field goal

put Chicago ahead 12-10.

On the Bears next offensive possession, on fourth-and-11 from the Chicago 26, LS

Patrick Mannelly thought the Packers had 12 men on the field, so he snapped the ball to

punt protector Garrett Wolfe, who was tackled after a four-yard gain. But the Packers' 12th

man had dashed off the field well before the snap, enabling Green Bay to take over at the

Chicago 30. The Packers failed to pick up a first down but still were able to retake the lead

at 13-12 on Crosby's 39-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter.

Chicago 17, Pittsburgh 14

Sunday, September 20, 2009 -- Soldier Field

CHICAGO - Bears K Robbie Gould hit a game-winning 44-yard field goal with just 15 sec-

onds to play, as the Chicago Bears defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers 17-14 at Soldier Field.

Trailing 14-7 entering the fourth quarter, Bears QB Jay Cutler led the Bears offense on

two scoring drives and Steelers K Jeff Reed missed two field goal attempts to help aide

Chicago's comeback.

After Reed missed a 38-yard field goal that would have given the Steelers a 17-7 fourth

quarter advantage, Cutler led the Bears on a nine-play 72-yard scoring drive, capped by a

seven-yard touchdown pass to rookie WR Johnny Knox to tie the score, 14-14, with 6:21

remaining. Cutler completed 6 of 7 passes for 70 yards on the drive. He connected with

WR/PR Devin Hester for 13 yards on third-and-three and hooked up with TE Greg Olsen

for 29 yards down the middle before hitting Knox for the score.

The Steelers drove down to the Chicago 25 on the ensuing possession, but Reed's 43-

yard field goal attempt sailed wide left with 3:18 remaining in regulation.

Cutler then engineered an eight-play, 41-yard drive, capped by the eighth game-winner

of Gould's career. Bears RB Matt Forté totaled 21 yards on the drive (nine yards rushing

and 12 receiving) and Cutler completed all three passes for 22 yards.

During the Bears' final two scoring drives Cutler completed nine of 10 passes for 92 yards

with a touchdown for a 138.3 passer rating.

For the entire game, Cutler completed 27 of 38 passes for 236 yards with two touch-

downs and no interceptions for a 104.7 passer rating.

The Steelers marched 92 yards on 13 plays on their first possession of the game to take

a 7-0 lead on QB Ben Roethlisberger's one-yard touchdown pass to TE Matt Spaeth on

fourth-and-goal. Roethlisberger completed eight of nine passes for 84 yards on the drive.

On defense for Chicago, DE Alex Brown registered two sacks-both on third-down plays.

His second sack pushed the Steelers back nine yards, and Reed missed from 38 yards on

the next snap. Brown also pressured Roethlisberger into an errant throw that was intercept-

ed by CB Charles Tillman at the Bears' 5 early in the second quarter. The pick was

Chicago's first takeaway of the season.

The Bears registered a second takeaway on the kickoff following Gould's game-winning

field goal as Jamar Williams forced a Stefan Logan fumble that Craig Steltz recovered to

ice the victory.

Knox had a team-high six receptions for 70 yards, while second-year TE Kellen Davis

had five catches for 38 yards. Both players recorded their first career NFL touchdowns.

Davis snared a 6-yard TD pass from Cutler on third-and-goal to cap a 13-play, 97-yard

drive and tie the score 7-7 with 19 seconds remaining in the first half.

Roethlisberger completed 23 of 35 passes for 221 yards with a touchdown and intercep-

tion for an 80.8 passer rating. WR Hines Ward caught six passes for 57 yards and WR

Santonio Holmes had five receptions for 83 yards. RB Willie Parker rushed for 47 yards on

14 carries, and RB Rashard Mendenhall had 39 yards on three attempts.

17 on Cutler's 31-yard completion to WR Earl Bennett. But on the next play, Cutler was

intercepted by LB David Hawthorne, halting the drive.

The Seahawks converted the turnover into Mare's 46-yard field goal, then scored early in

the second quarter on Mare's 37-yarder.

After it was ruled that RB Matt Fortè lost a fumble at the Seahawks' 1, the Bears chal-

lenged the play, and referee Don Carey reversed the call, ruling that Forte was down before

he lost the ball. Two plays later, Cutler fired a one-yard touchdown pass to TE Greg Olsen

on fourth-and-goal, capping a 10-play, 66-yard drive and drawing the Bears to within 13-7

with 1:56 left in the half.

Mare missed a 43-yard field goal attempt wide left with nine seconds left in the half to keep

the score at 13-7.

The Bears defense forced two turnovers in Seattle territory in the first eight minutes of the

third quarter and the Chicago offense responded with 10 points to take a 17-13 lead.

CB Charles Tillman stripped the ball from Seahawks WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh after a

5-yard reception and DE Adewale Ogunleye recovered at the Seattle 42. The Bears con-

verted the turnover into a 14-13 lead as WR Johnny Knox turned a short pass over the mid-

dle into a 7-yard touchdown. The rookie receiver eluded one defender and then dove toward

the end zone, touching the ball to the pylon before he went out of bounds.

Mare missed a 34-yard field goal attempt wide left but the Bears were forced to punt the

ball after a three-and-out drive on the ensuing possession. Chicago P Brad Maynard hit a

66-yard punt, the third-longest of his career, down to the Seattle 6. On the very next play LB

Lance Briggs made a diving interception at the Seattle 14.

Briggs' interception led to Robbie Gould's 37-yard field goal, which gave the Bears a 17-

13 lead.

The Seahawks responded with a pair of Mare field goals. The second, a 46-yarder, gave

Seattle a 19-17 lead with 5:12 remaining in the fourth quarter. It came after LB Aaron Curry

forced a Cutler fumble with a blindside sack. DE Cory Redding returned the loose ball six

yards to the Chicago 39.

The Bears reached the Seattle 36 on their next drive. On second-and-seven, Cutler hit

Hester with a slant pass. The speedy receiver broke away from a defender and dashed into

the end zone for the winning touchdown.

The Seahawks reached the Chicago 29 on their ensuing drive but turned the ball over on

downs when Wallace failed to connect with Jones on a short pass on fourth-and-two with :26

to play.

Game 4

Chicago 48, Detroit 24

Sunday, October 4, 2009 -- Soldier Field

CHICAGO - After being tied at halftime, the Bears outscored Detroit 27-3 in the final two

quarters en route to a 48-24 victory at Soldier Field.

Johnny Knox returned the opening kickoff of the second half 102 yards for a touchdown

to snap a 21-21 tie, Chicago's offense added 20 second-half points on six possessions and

the Bears defense held the Lions to just three points over the game's final 30 minutes.

QB Jay Cutler passed for two touchdowns, ran for a third and became the first Bears

quarterback since the NFL-AFL merger in 1970 to post a passer rating of at least 100 in

three straight games. RB Matt Forté, rushed for a season-high 121 yards on 12 carries

including a career-long 61-yard run and a 37-yard touchdown.

The Bears defense gave up touchdowns on Detroit's first two possessions and 398 total

yards in the game. But the unit generated five sacks and two takeaways deep in Lions ter-

ritory while holding Detroit out of the end zone on seven possessions in the second half.

The Bears excelled on special teams as well. Knox, Danieal Manning, Devin Hester and

Earl Bennett all had long returns; K Robbie Gould made a career-long 52-yard field goal;

and P Brad Maynard landed all four of his punts inside-the-20, burying two out of bounds

at the 6 and the 2.

The Lions took a 7-0 lead on RB Kevin Smith's 1-yard touchdown run. The score came

after Detroit took Jason Hanson's apparent 40-yard field goal off the board when an offside

penalty against rookie Al Afalava on the kick resulted in a first down.

The Bears responded as Forté broke loose for 61 yards to the Detroit 5. Three plays later,

Cutler's 5-yard touchdown run on third-and-goal tied the game 7-7.

Cutler completed 18 of 28 passes for 141 yards with 2 touchdowns and no interceptions

to compile a 100.4 passer rating.

The Lions took a 14-7 lead on QB Matthew Stafford's 14-yard touchdown pass to TE Will

Heller, capping a 10-play, 72-yard drive with 5:03 left in the first quarter. Stafford passed for

122 yards on Detroit's first two possessions. For the game, Stafford completed 24 of 36

passes for 296 yards with a touchdown and interception to compile an 89.6 passer rating.

Cutler put the Bears ahead 21-14 with touchdown passes of two yards to Kellen Davis

and one yard to Greg Olsen just 3:20 apart early the second quarter. Olsen's score came

on fourth-and-goal-after the Bears opted to take Gould's apparent 20-yard field goal off the

board when an offside penalty on the kick moved the ball to the 1.

Olsen's touchdown came after DT Tommie Harris intercepted a Stafford screen pass

and returned it six yards to the Detroit 8.

The Lions marched 98 yards to tie the score 21-21 on Smith's 3-yard touchdown run with

26 seconds left in the half. But that would be Detroit's last trip into the end zone.

After Knox’s touchdown, Gould's field goals of 52 and 22 yards increased the Bears' lead

to 34-21. The second kick came after Israel Idonije sacked Stafford, forcing a fumble that

Ogunleye recovered at the Detroit 19.

After Hanson's 35-yard field goal drew the Lions to within 34-24, the Bears responded

with Forté’s 37-yard touchdown romp with 6:46 to play. Garrett Wolfe added a 2-yard scor-

ing run with 1:57 remaining.

Game 5

Atlanta 21, Chicago 14

Sunday, October 18, 2009 -- Georgia Dome

ATLANTA -- The Falcons drove 41 yards on seven plays in 3:08 to score the go-ahead

touchdown with 3:06 remaining in the fourth quarter and held off a Bears drive which

reached the Atlanta 5 in the closing seconds to win the contest 21-14 at the Georgia Dome.

Trailing 14-7 in the fourth, the Bears marched 92-yards on eight plays to tie the score on

QB Jay Cutler's two-yard touchdown strike to TE Greg Olsen on third-and-goal with 6:14

left in regulation. The drive was highlighted by Cutler's 30-yard scramble and his 41-yard

completion to Olsen to the Atlanta 6.

But after the touchdown, Eric Weems returned the ensuing kickoff 62 yards to the

Chicago 41. Falcons QB Matt Ryan then set up Michael Turner's 5-yard go-ahead touch-

down run with completions of 16 and 15 yards to TE Tony Gonzalez.

The Bears had opportunities to score inside the red zone throughout the contest but

turned the ball over on an interception, a fumble and a turnover on downs.

Cutler passed for 300 yards and two touchdowns, but was intercepted twice by Falcons

S Thomas DeCoud. The first pick came on the Bears' first possession of the game on third-

and-nine from the Atlanta 12.

Trailing 14-7 late in the third quarter, the Bears had first down at the Atlanta 1 following

an eight-yard catch on third-and-eight by TE Desmond Clark, but Bears RB Matt Forté

fumbled on back-to-back plays after an incompletion on first down. Forté recovered the first

loose ball at the 1, but the Falcons smothered the second at the 2.

The Bears lost despite outgaining the Falcons 373-253, converting nine of 16 third-down

opportunities, holding Turner to just 30 yards on 13 carries and intercepting two Ryan pass-

es. But the Bears defense also missed some opportunities as LB Lance Briggs failed to

pick up a Turner fumble that was caused by LB Pisa Tinoisamoa in the second quarter and

on the next play S/KR Danieal Manning dropped a would-be interception.

Chicago took a 7-0 lead on Cutler's 23-yard touchdown strike to WR Johnny Knox on

the first play of the second quarter. But after Cutler's first interception, the Falcons scored

touchdowns on their final two drives of the second quarter to grab a 14-7 halftime lead.

Atlanta WR Roddy White turned a short Ryan pass into a 40-yard touchdown with 9:03

left in the period, and Ryan later rifled a 10-yard scoring pass to Gonzalez with just four sec-

onds remaining in the half. Ryan completed 19 of 33 passes for 185 yards with two touch-

downs and two interceptions for a 68.4 passer rating. He was picked off in the second half

by CBs Zackary Bowman and Nate Vasher.

The Bears struggled to move the ball on the ground all game. With Forté limited to 23

yards on 15 carries, Cutler led the team in rushing with 34 yards on three attempts.

The Bears also committed nine penalties for 65 yards, including three on their final drive.

After a pass interference penalty on Falcons linebacker Curtis Lofton on third-and-17 at the

31 gave Chicago a first down at the 14, G Frank Omiyale (false start) and WR Earl Bennett

(pass interference) were flagged on back-to-back plays, resulting in second-and-25 at the

29. After an incomplete pass, Cutler connected with Bennett for 24 yards over the middle,

leaving the Bears with fourth-and-one at the 5. But LT Orlando Pace was flagged for a false

start. Cutler then failed to connect with Clark on the next play.
