BEHIND THE SCENES The Hawth is proud that for almost 20 years visually impaired patrons have been able to enjoy Audio Described performances, including touch tours at selected shows.

Audio description is a live commentary through a discrete headset, which gives information on the visual aspects of a show, from the set, props and costumes to the actor’s movements and expressions. The descriptions are all given to fit in with dialogue and music and build a complete picture of the action on stage.

The team of volunteers work hard behind the scenes to prepare for each Audio Described performance, beginning months before the show arrvies at The Hawth. They meet and greet the patrons, giving out the free headsets necessary to listen to the audio description. If there is a touch tour before the show then visually impaired patrons and their companion have the opportunity to be guided around the stage to feel the stage sets, props and costumes. Finally it’s time to put all the hard work into practice as the show begins!

Disabled AccessThe Hawth car park has assigned disabled parking, as well as free parking for cars and coaches. There is level access into the theatre, which has adapted toilet facilities. Tickets in the front stalls can be purchased for wheelchair users and their companions (available for half price at all Hawth promotions).
