Dear Neighbours,

Welcome to the latest edition of the Hawkinge & Elham Valley Handbook.

This edition, we bring you news about the local Airshow, taking place in June. We also hear from the Owl Sanctuary based in Folkestone. Most will be familiar with the sight of these beautiful birds in local high streets, and at local events, where they’re available to view and stroke. However, many of us won’t know the story of sanctuary owner Ryan Maxted and the incredible work and commitment he puts in. Please do have a look at the article in this edition and find out about this great work. With the latest details of what’s on in the area, and local clubs and societies, we hope there’s plenty of interest for you.

We’d like to thank Shane Record for allowing us to use his beautiful artwork for our front cover this edition.

Shane is a hugely talented local artist, with some incredible artwork of local areas. Do please have a look at his website www.shanerecord.com and the next time you’re in Folkestone, pop into his gallery towards the top of the Old High Street, Folkestone, where you can watch him at work and view his paintings.

We hope you continue to enjoy the handbook. As ever, as our local community magazine, we are always delighted to hear of local positive news and events that we can help you to spread the word about.

With kindest regards,

TuijaTuija Foster, Editor

Don’t you just love Owls?

Whether it’s their big bright eyes, gorgeous feathers or the swizzle head movement, it cannot be denied that Owls are wonderful creatures. However, not all Owls can live up to their ‘wise’ ideal, and some get themselves in trouble and get hurt. But fear not. The Folkestone Owl Rescue Sanctuary is there to look after these amazing birds and get them flying fit again.

This story starts in 1989, when Ryan Maxted visited a friend’s house and saw a barn Owl his friend was homing, and Ryan decided he wanted to do the same. With permanent injuries, these birds wouldn’t be able to survive in the wild. The Owl Sanctuary currently has forty three Owls, which amount to seven different breeds and Ryan wants to encourage more people to visit the sanctuary, with no entry fee, to come and handle the glorious birds.

‘People take photos, paint or draw them. We even have some people who come for their birthdays and spend all day with the birds.’ It’s surprising that such a wonderful place can be found on our doorstep, as this Owl sanctuary is tucked down Downs Road.

‘You’d be surprised how many people have no idea we are here, until they call us to come and visit’ said Ryan. However, I wouldn’t be surprised if you’ve seen this cheerful chap with his birds in Folkestone Town Centre, as he goes there every Thursday and Saturday from ten until three and sits with the birds for people to meet them, stroke them, and donate to his cause.

Currently, Ryan is doing all this unpaid, and funds the sanctuary himself. They strive to make sure no bird is put down, but fed and sheltered with the help of donations from the general public. But this Parliament of Owls cannot survive without a little divine intervention. Or better yet, an intervention from you – the beautiful bird loving public.

The Folkestone Owl Sanctuary are looking for sponsors, so if you own a business, or know of someone who does who’d like to make this dedicated man’s life a little easier by helping his local cause, his number is at the bottom, especially If you have any questions

about the birds, the sanctuary or how to get involved.

And to everyone else, I plead with you to go visit the sanctuary to get a hands on tour of the work done there.

Red Arrows To Return In June

STAR performer at last year’s Folkestone Airshow, the RAF Red Arrows aerobatics team is to return for the 2013 event.Organiser Folkestone Town Centre Management Ltd (FTCM) has announced. On Saturday, June 8, it will be the first major display of the year for the team whose high-speed manoeuvres in ‘diamond nine’ formation have thrilled air show audiences all over the world.Other RAF aircraft taking part will include the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, comprising a Lancaster, Spitfire and Hurricane, a Typhoon Eurofighter, a Sea King sea-air search and rescue helicopter and a Tucano trainer in its new 2013 colours.Folkestone Airshow project manager Yvonne Holder said that the day’s programme would provide visitors with several hours of exciting flying displays as well as events, activities and entertainment on the Leas and harbour area.

“It’s tremendous news that we shall be seeing the Red Arrows again - subject to RAF operational requirements at the time. They are much in demand - and we are delighted that Folkestone is among the venues where they will appear in 2013. It will be a great day and our preparations to welcome scores of thousands of sky-watchers are well under way. “Staging a quality event on the scale of an air show is complex and doesn’t come cheap, though”, added Ms Holder. “As well as the cost of the Red Arrows and other aircraft - the charge for each plane taking part is thousands of pounds - there are numerous upfront expenses, which range from employing a specialist air show management company to procure aircraft, obtain licenses and work with the RAF and aviation authorities to set up the time-tabled flying programme to such mundane but essential tasks as hiring mobile toilets. “Our ambition is to make Folkestone Airshow 2013 the

biggest and best yet. FTCM, as a not-for-profit organisation, depends almost entirely on commercial sponsorship to fund its events programme, and we have launched some attractive sponsorship opportunities which will enable companies and organisations to support the town’s premier public event of the year and at the same time to promote themselves”.

Discover Folkestone, Hythe & Romney Marsh manager Chris Kirkham said that the three-day show, June 7, 8 and 9, was expected to attract 100,000 visitors, including a significant number from France, Belgium and Holland.

“Their estimated spend in shops and on accommodation, food, drink and entertainment is £12 million - a whopping fifty-fold return on the investment of staging the event. The potential benefits - immediate and longer-term - are huge”.

Blooming Summer…

With the warm sun in the sky, the soft grass under our feet and the beautiful array of Summer flowers in full bloom it’s hard for most of us to see how anybody could not be enjoying this time of year. (Mind you, at the time of going to press who knows what the Kent weather will be like, but we can hope…) However, there are a number of health conditions made worse by the heat of Summer.

Some conditions are exacerbated by heat, some even being caused by an excess of internal heat within the body. Eczema can be particularly bad during the Summer months and a real danger period (especially for children) is the warm nights. It can be more difficult to concentrate on not scratching when half asleep, causing skin to break and be more susceptible to infection. A soothing wash with cooled and refrigerated tea of Chamomilla recutita (chamomile) and/or Mentha piperita (peppermint) may provide some relief. The latter has the benefit of also being a mild insect repellent too! Remember to keep the

tea in the fridge though, and discard after 48 hours. More difficult cases may respond to a cream made from Stellaria media (chickweed) – this helps cool the skin, heal and relieve the ‘itchy’ sensation. Chronic cases of eczema may require consultation with a qualified Medical Herbalist to address the condition internally too.

Another irritating problem of the Summer is insect bites. Some lucky people just don’t get bitten… others do but only mild irritation is caused. However, some approach the Summer with dread, knowing that they will be covered in huge, inflamed bites once the insects are around. To help reduce inflammation, relieve the itch and provide antiseptic

protection you can try applying pure essential oil of Lavandula officinalis (lavender). Herbal lotions are available too with a combination of ingredients should you need something stronger. If you are very prone to being bitten you might benefit from a one to one consultation with a Medical Herbalist – it may be that the toxic load of your body is too great and there may be changes you can make to make you less susceptible.

An individualised prescription of herbs may be necessary to help balance your body – hypersensitivity to bites can be indicative of a poorly functioning immune system.

Hannah O’Donnell revisits The Dolls House Hythe. The crème-de-chameleon of indoor-markets, The Dolls House has had a few changes made; little additions worth visiting.

Now, you’re not only drawn in by the food smells, but there is a new extended café area that has free Wi-Fi which means that you want to stick around. I mean, what’s better than sitting and having a coffee with your friends, and being able to share with them that hilarious video clip you found on the internet? Nothing. Absolutely nothing.

Except for maybe having a continued browse around the stalls which include local crafts, artwork by Johnny Cotter, clothing alterations, beautiful machine embroidery items, gorgeous furniture, fresh breads, beauticians and hand-made curtains… what more could anyone want?

Shoreline Vintage (whose details are below) are now stocking the beautiful Autentico Chalkpaint. Autentico has a huge range of 130 colours and currently Shoreline Vintage have 21 colours plus waxes. Pop down to the Dollshouse to check it out.

All of our furniture is renovated using eco-friendly chalk paints and waxes.

Commissions undertaken - we can renovate your

On the mezzanine floor lives my favourite little cave of books, which so if you just want a quiet afternoon, grab a book, grab a coffee and just enjoy the friendly and calming atmosphere. I wouldn’t hold it against you if it took a couple of the stall holders to wrestle you out of that chair, because to me that sounds like bliss.

However, if ‘quiet time’ is a thing of the past, there is still plenty of space for children, so bring your little tykes and make it a party. Although when I was there, I saw quite a few sweeties and biscuits for sale, so you might want to bring your purse with looser strings…

The Dolls House is such a wonderful, happy place, full to bursting of shiny, soft and sweet smelling delicious

things; do go and explore. The Dolls House is open every day except Wednesdays, so treat yourself.

Inspiring Fitness by John Hill

Is a balanced diet good for you? With all the cold weather and temperatures dropping to below freezing it certainly doesn’t help those people who have tried to eat healthy and lose weight in 2013.

Another key factor that I believe plays its part is the concept of a balanced diet. What is a balanced diet and why do we feel the need to follow this age old advice? The better question is “Why do we follow this advice even when it doesn’t work?”

It seems that the concept of a balanced diet comes from the Government backed “food pyramid” or the “food plate”. What I will do in this article is talk about this and why it really has very little relevance to you or your family nutritional needs.

The food pyramid that was widely used was introduced by the US department of agriculture in 1992. This has since been updated and changed to the “food plate” in 2011. The original food pyramid was developed from a similar model that was introduced in Sweden in 1972 that showed “basic foods” that should be consumed by humans

In 1989, the World health organisation published recommendations on food intake and nutrients that were designed to prevent obesity, chronic diseases and dental caries based on meta-analysis, it is important to note here that chronic illnesses have gotten worse since 1992. It is also important to note that (as of 2010) 62% of the UK adult population is either overweight or obese. As you can see, what has been recommended may not have had worked! I will also chuck in that one of the recommendations was to consume 55%-75% of our calories from carbohydrates and up to 10% from sugar. I can see a problem here!

The first problem with the food pyramid…

If we think about this logically, who is funding the food pyramid or the food plate concept? That would be the Government of course! The challenge that we all have is profit and health don’t always go hand in hand. There has been talk of the large companies in the farming and milk industries putting pressure on Governments to be “favourable” towards certain foods. There

is some talk that the dairy and milk section of the original pyramid is easier to see than the other this over promoting the use of dairy day to day.

The other consideration is that the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) has a purpose for promoting the trade of food and farming products like grains. With the original food pyramid so heavily weighted for grains and cereals, it does make you wonder.

My Plate

In 2011 both the US and UK switched to the “My Plate” system which shows what an average balanced meal should look like. In the UK, this was called the “Eatwell plate”

This rough guide to plate shows the food in proportion to what a good meal looks like. Again it promotes the concept of balance. There are numerous challenges on this approach which I will discuss in part two. This gives you an idea of what we are being told a healthy meal should look like. Anyone have any objections yet? Hold that thought!

Conclusion

This should help you in understanding why we are have been told what we have been told, even if it’s making us more unhealthy. The UK obesity rate has doubled since the conception of the food pyramid in 1992. 30% of our children are now overweight or obese. It wasn’t always this way. I was taught the food pyramid in my personal training qualification; it is also the basis for what your children are fed in schools etc. The statistics and the advice, doesn’t really add up.

Most of us would like to ensure that what we have worked hard for all of our lives, that at least some of it will pass on to those that we love and cherish. To make sure this happens, we have to be proactive and ensure that our affairs are in order. There are many different Trusts available, each achieving something a little different. The most commonly used Trust in a Will for a couple or co-owners of a property is a Property Protective Trust (PPT). What does this do? It gives the survivor the right to live in the house for the remainder of their lives but with the deceased’s share held in trust for the children (or other beneficiaries) when the survivor eventually dies. This trust does not restrict the rights of the survivor to sell or move home, but the deceased’s share always remains protected. If the survivor were to remarry, cohabit or require residential care, the protected share is ring fenced from those ‘outside influences’, whilst ensuring that the survivor is provided for.

A Lasting Power of Attorney is the document that shows who you have chosen to make decisions on your behalf if you become mentally or physically incapacitated through illness or an accident. Unfortunately there are things in our lives that we have no control over and without an LPA in place the courts and social services can take control of your life, cause misery, frustration, intrusion and a great deal of expense for your family.

With a properly thought out Will and a Lasting Power of Attorney in place it can ensure that at a time when your family is going through the trauma and grief of either your illness, accident or departure from this world, your foresight has at least made that path a little easier.

Take Control now!

it has been something which i have felt strongly about for a long time - how i achieve my goals!Anyone who knows me will say that I’m a pretty motivated person, a bit more motivated than most. In this article I will discuss strategies which have helped me “get going” on numerous occasions. I will tell you the simple ways in which I have gone from feeling like I can’t do a thing to feeling like there is nothing I can’t do!

I have experienced my fair share of being “in and out” of health and fitness; I have been really fit and I have been really unfit. I have been a student, a multiple business owner, had two full time jobs at the same time I am now a husband and a dad, all in the last 10 years. Being consistent in exercise when your life is not consistent is a challenge. Through this time I have let the ‘grass grow’ under my feet so many times it makes me mad. But I have learned something about myself…

Three years ago I had a “holiday photo” moment, you know… the one where you thought you were walking around the pool on holiday looking… ok… then you get home and see the photos, the ones where you were not paying attention to holding your belly in and BOOM… the truth hit me…my body was in bad shape, I wasn’t aware it was this bad, I had been kidding myself.

As I write this I can confidently say that I’m on a good roll at the minute and am in the shape of my life… again! I will commit to continuing the good times and reducing the bad, stopping this boom and bust and getting consistent…

a consistent life will let you have consistent health and fitness (I say to myself).

Starting Back

Whatever you say about exercise, and intense boot camp style exercise, if you have not done any for a while its goanna hurt! Starting back or starting for the first time is the single most difficult thing to do. Why? Mentally it’s very off putting as you refer to your previous negative experiences and memories of starting back, and they have all invariably failed after much pain and discomfort.

Now with that thought in mind how does a nice gentle walk sound or a ten minute workout? A bit easier, yes. If you set your goals when you start back at a really low level and give yourself more time to reach it. For example, I would never go out for a run when I was unfit (like some people do); I always go out for a walk and do some running while I was out. It’s a different mind-set; I would usually end up running half the time and walking half the time, after 3 months of this, 3 times a week I was a lot fitter.

Even the best kept garden will be teeming with critters all conspiring to sabotage your growing efforts and you could spend a lot on named chemicals to combat various problems but it may be worth having a go with more environmentally friendly remedies first. For instance, the cabbage-white butterfly, as its name suggests will home in on your cabbages and other brassicas, lay its eggs and, two weeks later, a mass of caterpillars will be eating holes in the leaves. Pick them off by hand, inspecting the plants carefully every day or two and try spraying them with salty water to deter them. To combat greenfly, try crushing a clove of garlic in warm water, leave

for about 6 hours, strain into a hand spray and spray over the plants. It’s very effective. If you find aphids on your rose buds, a disgusting but effective treatment is to rub them out with your fingers. Cats can be deterred with old-fashioned moth balls although the effects don’t last very long. After a wet night a local cat had buried all of ours! Of all the pests that will drive you up the wall, slugs and snails are at the top of the list, particularly when you have young seedlings or are growing hostas or sunflowers. For plants in pots, Vaseline or grease smeared round the pot can help, as can copper strips which cause electro-chemical shocks. Otherwise, try sharp mulches around the plants that need protection, such as sharp gravel, crushed eggshells or broken seashells. Some say hair clippings work (see your

local hairdresser) and caffeine is supposed to be lethal to molluscs so try coffee grounds. Half fill a dish with beer (I don’t think they are particularly fussy about the brand!) and sink it in the ground to attract the slugs which fall in and drown. Of course, nothing really beats a size 10 boot and a thorough search of the garden with a torch in hand on a damp night might pay dividends.

Happy hunting!
