This June, I with 16 other Wisconsin United Methodist pastors, join the ranks of those who have served the church and are now to retire. Retirees from ministry and many from other careers have advised me of one thing….”Stu keep busy.” Then, they add, “I’m busier now than before retirement.” For what I spend my time doing in the future I have put that to prayer for the past several years. Hobbies which don’t get the attention we like to give them in our working years will certainly fill my time. I can’t

wait to get the camera unpacked! I have a pile of books to read, and computer work to begin. With a knee replaced I can get out and walk again. Then, of course there are those Elder-hostel adventures. Both Sarah and Peter have made requests for their dad to visit this summer. I have never seen Peter in a bike race. Sarah and Abhijay have really fixed up their home, in San Jose, and want to show it to me. As one door closes another opens, I was recently told. At Annual Conference last year our former district superintendent Forrest Wells offered me a position on his church staff at Cargill Church in Janesville. There I will spend ¼ time as a minister to Seniors. I will be living in an apartment in near by Milton. It has been a real joy to serve our church here in Prairie du Chien. Leaving is always a sad thing. How many communities can you drive from the center of town and be in the forests within a couple of minutes? Our church has a good future ahead of it under our lay leadership and the arrival of Pastor Mike Christensen. I believe he will lead Prairie into a new birth of spiritual growth. God breathes life into each of us. What we do with it is up to us. I pray that in the remaining years of my life on earth I am able to continue to serve my sisters and brothers. It is in my view that for all of us whether called out to full time ministry or serving the church as laity, our discipleship never ends. Throughout our life God calls us to service in his name. Thank you for letting me serve you for the past ten years. May God bless each of you in the years ahead. Stuart Allen

~Miscellaneous & Etc.~ Rhubarb Upside-Down Cake

submitted by Dorothy Birrenbach Makes one 9-inch cake; Serves 10 For the topping:

• 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour • 1/4 cup sugar • Coarse salt For the Cake: • 1 1/2 sticks unsalted butter, room temperature, plus

more for buttering pan • 1 pound rhubarb, trimmed and cut on a very sharp

diagonal about 1/2 inch thick • 1 3/4 cups sugar • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder • Coarse salt • 1/2 teaspoon finely grated orange zest plus 1 table-

spoon fresh orange juice • 2 large eggs • 1 cup sour cream

Directions: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Make the topping: Stir together butter, flour, sugar, and 1/4 teaspoon salt until moist and crumbly. Make the cake: Butter a 9-inch round cake pan (2 inches deep). Dot with 4 tablespoons butter (cut into pieces). Toss rhubarb with 3/4 cup sugar; let stand for 2 minutes. Toss again, and spread in pan. Whisk together flour, baking powder, and 1 1/2 teaspoons salt. Beat remaining stick butter and cup sugar with a mixer on medium speed until pale and fluffy. Beat in zest and juice. Beat in eggs, 1 at a time, until incorporated, scraping down sides of bowl. Beat in flour mixture in 3 additions, alternating with sour cream, until smooth. Spread evenly over rhubarb. Crumble topping evenly over batter. Bake until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean and top springs back when touched, about 1 hour. Let cool for 10 minutes. Run a knife around edge of cake, and invert onto a wire rack. Let cool completely.

DEAR ONES: JUNE 2010 Greetings in the name of The Father, The Son, and The Holy Spirit!!! I asked Pastor Stu if I could put a note in the June newsletter for you to peruse and ponder. He said it would be okay and welcomed me to do so, so here goes---. Lynn and I are very excited to be coming to serve God and you folks of the PdC UMC faith family and the whole community of PdC!!! I would like you to think about ways we can respond to God’s call for us to be in ministry together to build up His Kingdom in the here and now. I would like you to think about and consider how you can faithfully participate in the ministries of the church by your prayers, your presence, your gifts, and your service. We will be together for the first Sunday in July, the 04th by the by. But I must be gone to finish my seminary studies for the rest of the month. I would very much appreciate it if you would think of either scripture or topics you have either wondered about or would like to know more about. I would use some of my time away to ponder your questions, for if one person wonders, many probably have the same or similar questions. In order for me to have this information before I leave I’d appreciate it if you would write your questions out and bring them to worship on Sunday the 04th. I generally preach from the lectionary, but from time to time, I will topic preach, or work through a book of the Bible. I was invited to attend the April meeting of the SPRC, and I asked for a special dispensation for the Saturday, 03 July, afternoon service. I would like as many of us to be together as can be on that particular Sunday as it will be our very first time together, so I’d like to not have the service on preceding Saturday (03) afternoon. In that same light, I’d like you to please invite your family, friends, neighbors, work mates, and everyone else whom you’d like to see go to heaven, (you will note here I said everyone, not anyone, or someone [smile] (: And lets not forget the ones you do not get along with (your enemies) how better to follow the commandment of Jesus to, “Love your enemies”, Lk 6:27-39, than you giving them the invite to let the Holy Spirit work on them, (while He’s working on you too by the by), it is just what the Doctor, that is the Great Physician, ordered. I see God in this relationship which we are about to began. You, by your mission statement, and your desires to expand the ministry that you provide to the faith family, the community, and the world, are indeed looking to fulfill the Great Commission to which Jesus calls all of his followers you, and I, and Lynn alike. I believe that God’s Word will not come away empty, but rather bear much fruit. I pray that God continues to bless you, and yours, and our time together. AMEN. Get Away With the Guys… Attention all men! Come have

breakfast with the guys on Wednesday mornings. We meet at Coaches.

at 7am.

2010 ANNUAL CONFERENCE Pastor Stu and Pastor Mike will be attending Annual Conference from Sunday through Wednesday afternoon (June 13th-15th) at the La Crosse Center. In addition to an ordination service Sunday at 7:30p.m on Monday evening there will be a youth led worship program. These are two events that attract visitors. To contact Pastor Stu call him on the cell phone 608-306-6285. Sunday morning in Prairie we will have a guest speaker.

ELF FUND NEEDS YOUR SUPPORT The first Sunday of each month a collection is taken for our Emergency Loan Fund (ELF). Our fund is getting low due to making funds available to those who need it. June 5th and 6th are ELF Saturday and Sunday. Look for the baskets on the Communion rail.

New Church Member Alita Robertson joined our church on May 30th.

She comes from the Evangelical Free Church. She has brought many gifts with her, especially

the gift of food preparation. Her husband, Jerry, retains his credentials as a retired

minister in the Evangelical Free Association. Be sure to welcome Alita as a full member.

~Happenings in Our Church~

From Global Concerns…… Our committee will not meet in June. We are having a food stand at Blackhawk Junction on July 24th from 10am-2pm. If you can donate for the bake sale or would

like to help that day, please call Dorothy Birrenbach. The next meeting will be Monday, July 12th at 4pm. Dorothy Birrenbach

Study on the book of James Bridging the gap between faith and practice is one of the greatest challenges we face in the Church. Bridging that gap is the instruction that comes from the New Testament book of James. It is one of the most practical books in the Bible. Each Wednesday evening will begin with a time of fellowship and dinner held at 6pm. The study will begin at 7pm and last until 8pm. This will be an in-depth study in the Epistle led by the Rev. Gerald Robertson. Materials are provided free of charge. A full dinner is served. And childcare is available. It is being provided as a convenience for families. Those who are unable to join us for the meal and welcomed in the 7pm study. *There will be no supper or study on June 16th*

Youth Newz….. MYF finished their last breakfast in April. The Youth are looking forward to the end of the school year and to summer. MYF has some great ideas to

present to the council at their next meeting. Watch for events! We’ll be going camping August 2nd-4th.

Vacation Bible School is going to be June 21st-25th and we need your help with several things. Please help us get the word out! VBS at the UMC is for kids age 3-6. Our

goal is to get as many kids here as we can! The week of VBS we will need volunteers to provide snacks\treats, teaching, music, etc. A sign-up sheet will be available when it gets closer. Or you can call the office and let us know if you’d like to help out. Lastly, we are asking for donations to help cover the costs of advertising and materials. If you would like to donate, please mark your check or envelope, “VBS”. Thanks and we are looking forward to an awesome week of Vacation Bible School!

Pentecost Celebration I need to thank everyone who helped in any way with our celebration of Pentecost Sunday. There are far too many to name names. I appreciate all who wore a little red and all who stayed for the potluck afterwards. Thanks to all of you who helped with banner making. The calendar date for Pentecost runs to November, but Pastor Stu thought seven weeks were significant so we are going with that suggestion. And special thanks to Pastor Stu, Jan Meyer and Mary Don Olson for their help in the worship service. Thanks to the UMW for paying for some of the banner material. If the weather cooperates we will plant seven Salvia plants along the north entrance to remind us of the seven weeks of Pentecost and also of the guiding presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives everyday. Faith-filled Ways to say “Thank You” to God this summer:

As you plant flowers in your garden, say thank you to God for their gift of color. Give at least as much back to God as you spend on flowers this year. Use your time and talents to raise money for outreach. Do you have a garden? Do you have more zucchini than you can eat? What about tomatoes, beans, or sweet corn? Maybe you have some friends and neighbors who would gladly give a gift toward a mission of your church in exchange for some of your .vegetables – fresh, frozen, or canned. Put a container in the middle of the kitchen table and invite family members to make a special offering – perhaps even $1/day to say thank you for a joy each day. If your grocery bill tends to rise during the summer because more people are home and you have more visitors, try planning your menus around what’s on sale each week. Then with the money you save, you can make an extra gift to the mission and ministry of the church. Remember, God doesn’t take vacations from us! If you’re heading out on a special vacation – enjoy! Give thanks for the memories you’ll make by signing up for online bill pay through your bank. Then your offerings will be sent to the church automati-cally whether you’re on vacation or in your regular pew each week. Honor those you love with a special gift to the overall mission and ministry of the church through our apportionments. “A-portion-ment for others” can be a wonderful way to remember loved ones as a part of their gift for birthdays, anniversaries and other milestones.
