He used to humiliate them, seeking out their faults. He was quick to bring harm to them and was coarse with them. He would frighten them off if he had the ability to do so and was never garrulous with them. Each and every one of them was afraid for themselves because of him. He never flattered them whatsoever and never compromised with them. If he discovered a reprehensible act from one of them or witnessed his deviation from the Sunnah, he would expose him, declare his innocence from him and would revile him in gatherings. He would instigate [the innovator] until he either ruined him or until [the innovator] left off his evil way and corrupt creed. He was tireless upon this, exerting himself in this seeking the Face of All āh () until Allāh () called him back.” 1    1 See Tārīkh Dimashq (5/118) I
