Admission Criteria
Looked After ChildrenChildren in public care (children who are in the care or interim care of a local authority pursuant to S31 & 38 of the Children Act 1989, or children who are accommodated by a local authority, pursuant to S20 of the Children Act 1989).
Medical/social needChildren with professionally supported medical, social or special education need for whom it is essential to be admitted to The Academy as determined under arrangements agreed from time to time and published by the Governing Body.
SiblingsApplicants whose siblings currently attend The Academy and who will be attending The Academy on the date of admission. Note: The term ‘sibling’ should be defined in accordance with paragraph 3.65 of the Admissions Code of Practice.
DistanceApplicants living nearest The Academy based on distance from home to The Academy, measured on a straight line in accordance with the LA’s standard method of calculation. This distance will be measured from the front door of the home address to the nearest entrance to The Academy as designated by the Governing Body.
Aptitude10% of applicants in the relevant age group each year will be admitted by reference to aptitude in sport.
Note – Additional information which must be sent to The Academy by 8th October 2010: A completed Harefield Academy Additional Information Form. This form is available from The Academy if you wish your child’s sporting abilities to be considered.
Admission to Year 12Application forms are available from and returnable to The Harefield Academy.
The Harefield Academy has a policy of open enrolment into the Sixth Form. The number of places available for external students (i.e. those who have not been Academy students in Year 11) is dependent upon the number of Year 11 Harefield Academy students wishing to continue into Year 12. Our numbers within each subject are constrained by physical accommodation and facilities.
A place in the Sixth Form would not be offered if it was considered that the admission of the applicant would have an adverse effect upon the provision of efficient education for other students in the group. If a place was refused the applicant’s family would have the right of appeal to an independent panel.
Oversubscription will be determined by two criteria:These are: 1. Students for whom places on appropriate courses are available2. In order of GCSE points scores
After the admission of students with Statements of Special Educational Needs where The Harefield Academy is named on the statement, the criteria will be applied in the order in which they are set out below:

Reward points will be given for contributions to The Academy and more specifically for individual effort in the various aspects of academy life. At times students will need to be reminded of our rules. All breaches will be taken seriously and parents will be informed via the Student Planner or a letter home.

Head of House to support tutors and to ensure high standards of behaviour in the House group.
• They are also used for students with punctuality problems.
• Failure to attend a detention will result in escalation to an Assistant Principal Detention. These are after school for one hour. Failure to attend an Assistant Principal Detention or failure to complete the detention in an appropriate manner will result in escalation to an Academy Detention on a Friday for two hours.
Lilac ReportThis is for underachievement and tracking students.
Student Manager/Tutor Report (Green Report)Should a student come to the notice of the Student Manager/Tutor as a result of incidents recorded or other concerns, the Student Manager/Tutor may place that student on Student Manager/Tutor Report. The Student Manager/Tutor Report is a personal contract between staff and student, the terms of which are negotiated with the student. The purpose of this report is to help the student to overcome any temporary problem he/she may be experiencing relating to work or behaviour.

Assistant Principal/Head of House Report (Amber Report)Should the student not respond to being on Student Manager/Tutor Report, the tutor will refer the student to the Assistant Principal/Head of House. If the Assistant Principal/Head of House is satisfied that the student is not responding to the rewards or sanctions at the disposal of the Student Manager/Tutor the student will be placed on Assistant Principal/Head of House report.
The Report documentation is placed in the student’s file. The Assistant Principal/Head of House works with parents and sometimes outside agencies, to affect that the student returns to a responsible approach to his/her education.
SLT Report (Red Report)This is issued by a member of SLT on request from the Assistant Principal/Head of House. The SLT member contacts the parents; informs them of the seriousness of being on the report and possible consequences of failure to improve. After an agreed time, if the student does not conform to this report, appropriate action will be taken e.g. meeting with parents/internal exclusion (removal from all lessons).
Any further problems will result in the student being referred to the Principal.
NoteIt would not be expected that a student who satisfactorily completes a Head of Houses or SLT Report would go “down the system”. In most cases a student would be removed from the report system unless it was considered further monitoring was necessary regarding another issue.
