The Story Behind the Empire
Created By Kyley Polston ampJeremy Campbell
In present day China in city called Xian a young girl will soon discover more than she could ever imagine Lilui Ling stood in her kitchen helping her mother cook their meal Lilui darling run to the pantry and fetch me a potato her mother said Sure Mommy she says as she hurriedly rushes to the kitchen pantry She sadly discovers that the bag of potatoes is on the top shelf far from her reach All too eager to help her she decides not to bother her mother and figures out a way to do it herself Jumping up her fingers scraped the rough cloth of the bag If she could just jump a little higher PLOMP the full bag toppled over on to the floor next to her spilling all of its contents Among the lumpy potatoes were some strangely shaped objects
They were small decrepit pieces of bones with strange symbols on it Although she had never seen anything like them they looked vaguely familiar She picked them up turning them in her hands to inspect them closer Suddenly a mist engulfed her it was surrounding the small room cloaking her sight and blinding her momentarily When the mist clears in front of her stood an ominous transparent figure whose mere presence demanded reverence Astonishment struck her as she stared up at the spirit but just as children are her curiosity overtook her fear
Who are you she asked I am Lui Bang the Great he said confidently No emotion or display of understanding passed over her face only disappointment She wasnt sure who that was and she stood silent waiting for him to elaborate Who is that she finally asked You lowly peasant How dare you be so ignorant as to overlook the great knowledge of your all-powerful ancestry he answers now infuriated Huh Lilui asks She is even more confused than she had been earlier Can you explain Mister Foolish child yes I will I am the spirit of Lui Bang the Great You have summoned me with the oracle bones that you hold so tightly in your tiny clenched fist Lui Bang explains These bones house my spirit within them and I can only be released by one of my descendants You child are this descendant
Were you once a king or something she said Was I once a king Was I once a king He yells I was one of the greatest emperors that there ever was This town we stand in was once the capital of my empire Changan My fellow General Xiang Yu and I had conquered the Qin emperor and I then turned against my alliance with Xiang Yu and became the sole emperor
ldquoMy people loved me because I ended the harsh laws that constricted them and made many prosperous decisions I was practically worshiped But it did not all start out this way He then said
I was born into a peasant family no different than your own Peasants were poor citizens I feared I would only amount to that of my parents or the other poor mere merchants farmers or artisans Due to the fact that the wealthy children were the only ones that could be schooled my hopes fell further beneath me My childhood is no longer distinct in my mind I remember little from it but I later became a great general in the Qin Army it was their harsh rules that compelled me to lead an uprising
My dynasty the Han was greater than any before it The Han began in 206 BC and lasted until its fall in 220 AD My death came before its end but I as in this spirit form watched over the dynasty Lui bang explained
What was life like then Lilui asked Well there was much land and many people were of my empire There was a large division between the wealthy and the poor Even in their clothing the wealthy wore silk and pearls where as the poor wore clothing made of hemp and wool The peasants made up the majority of its society and it was their crops that fed our kingdom They grew things such as barley rice beans and fruits
ldquoThe slaves were the lowest in the social classes It was these slaves that built the famous Great Wall which stretched across 2700 miles This wall protected our people from invaders as well as the people that traded with usrdquo
ldquoThe Silk Road connected our isolated kingdom with the rest of our world this allowed our trade to prosper and grow Trade had been our largest source of income especially after the demand for silk started to rise We kept the process of the production of silk secret there were even laws that warned you not to tell anyone of it That was very smart of you Lilui said
Yes your ancestors were exceedingly intelligent young one It was through these people that many wonderful discoveries took place It was our Han workers that learned to manufacture paper Doctors created new helpful medicines Scholars not only found that there were 36525 days in a year but they also created Chinas first dictionary Other useful tools such as the wheelbarrow the seismograph (machine used in predicting earthquakes) and the sundial were also invented
Wow Thats so cool I cant believe the Han people invented all those things Lilui exclaimsThats not all we invented there were many more things We had many incredible sculptures some made out of wood others stone In my castle I had a beautiful sculpture of a magnificient horse Lui Bamg then said
ldquoWhen I ruled my people believed in Taoism Yet later under the rule of my great-grandson Wudi they began to convert to Confucianism He said We are christian but what did you believe asked Lilui ldquoThe main texts of TaoismTao-te Ching which was the book of the religions way and its power taught about a personrsquos close relationship with nature the process of worshiping their ancestors and also of a divine beingrdquo Lui Bang explained ldquoConfucianism was exceedingly similar to thisrdquo
The main goal of the Han was the unification of China During the reign of its last emperor it began to face many conflicts After several peasant revolts the Han never rose back to its full power It had been a strong empire but it eventually was overtaken by the widening gap between its social classes The Three Kingdoms period soon began shortly afterwards Lui Bang concluded So I am a descendant of the Han Lilui asked Yes child you have been your entire life even if you didnt realize it until now I am glad that I have opened your eyes to your past May you never forget Lui Bang said
He then disappeared just as quickly as he had come vanishing into the empty air Good Bye Mr Bang Lilui called out as she hurriedly left the pantry her potato in her hand Here you go Mommy I got the best one just for you Lilui said as she handed her mother the lumpy potato Thank you Darling but who did I hear you talking to her mother asked upon seeing that she had returned
Just my friend Lui Bang the Great He was the first emperor of the Han dynasty Lilui answered And he was in our kitchen pantry her mother questioned Yes he was very nice and told me all about the Han empire Mommy I am glad you have such an active imagination Lilui her mother chuckled Do you think you could go and fetch me another potato I just realized this recipe calls for two of them Lilui was already on her way Who knows what might be waiting for her this time

ldquoMy people loved me because I ended the harsh laws that constricted them and made many prosperous decisions I was practically worshiped But it did not all start out this way He then said
I was born into a peasant family no different than your own Peasants were poor citizens I feared I would only amount to that of my parents or the other poor mere merchants farmers or artisans Due to the fact that the wealthy children were the only ones that could be schooled my hopes fell further beneath me My childhood is no longer distinct in my mind I remember little from it but I later became a great general in the Qin Army it was their harsh rules that compelled me to lead an uprising
