Welcome to the
February 2013
edition of
‘The Hampton
Viewer’
Can you believe it’s February
already - wherever did January go to!
As I’m writing this (end of January),
looking out of the office window,
there’s a white blanket of snow every-
where. It looks absolutely beautiful!
Hope you have all enjoyed the snow
but kept safe at the same time.
Now in February, we already have
the school half term in just a few
weeks and hopefully the weather will
improve. However, if you are looking
for something to do with the children,
either warm indoors or wrapped up
outdoors, please see pages 14, 36
and 37 for some inspiration.
Also, don’t forget
Valentine’s Day this
month and Mother’s
Day next month. If
you are still looking for
a gift for your loved
one, please take a
look through the magazine, there are
some great gift ideas.
As always, I would like to ask you
to support your local businesses
advertising in the magazine and
please mention ‘The Hampton Viewer’
when doing so.
Finally, a huge thank you and
hope you all have a great February.
Until next time!

Does life have to be a pain?
Christmas & New Year is now a distant
memory, the Mayans turned out to be
wrong, the world did not end and so
you still have to face life!
Family dramas, work stress, the stress of
just getting through each day can
sometimes be a full time job.
I f you are a keen horse rider, maybe your body alignment means you are not getting
the best from your riding experience. You
could be a window cleaner, with constant
neck ache, a carpet fitter with knee and
other related problems, a painter/decorator,
a builder, labourer. Whatever you do for a
living or for fun, even if you are a keen and
positive housewife and mother of boisterous
and beautiful little ones, those aches and
pains from fatigue and repetitive strain,
threaten to hold you back, slow down your
step, possibly heighten your emotions,
challenge your coping mechanisms and
maybe even threaten your livelihood.
Whoever you are, whatever you do, if life
feels like it’s a pain, have you ever
considered what you can do to alleviate
that pain & in some cases make it go away?
If you are overweight you might try exercising
or eating less, to see if that helps your
condition and luckily in some people it
does. However, what if it’s not the weight
on your joints which are the problem, what
if it’s the emotional trauma, you can't seem
to get a handle on, what if you need is the
gentle support of a listening ear, or the
touch of wise hands that hear the moan of
your overworked muscles & strained tendons.
What if you could go about your everyday
life, and you discovered that maybe you
didn't have to do it in pain, physical or
otherwise. What would that mean to you?
To some it means 'freedom', an improved
quality of life. It means nights sleeping and
days living to the full. For those of us who
are relatively healthy and haven't arrived at
a place of despair, we might not understand
what this short article is trying to say.
Unfortunately, some of you out there will
understand too well. Touch of Healing is a
healthcare provider, based in West
Pinchbeck near Spalding coming to your area offering therapies in the comfort of
your own home and in Stanground. If the
contents of this article interest you and you
would like to know more, email [email protected] or call
01775 640788 / 07710 756 771 and ask to
speak to Shehnaz. You could log into
www.touchofhealing.co.uk for information
on treatments available at Touch of Healing.
In the meantime here are 5 ways which
can help improve pain conditions.
Eat Sensibly: Good Nutrition with essential
vitamins and minerals are an important fuel
for everyday healthy body mechanisms.
Exercise for up to 30 minutes a day: A
brisk daily walk is as good for the average
person as is an exhausting hour at your local
gym.
Practice yoga regularly: Although DVD's
and books are good, there is no substitute
for precise instruction. There is a yoga group currently running at St Michaels Church.
Email [email protected] for
further information.
Meditation: Learn to take command of the
way you think. A healthy mind translates
into a healthy body.
Get regular bodywork: There is no
substitute for the benefit of therapeutic,
precise touch, either through massage or
manipulation to align the body and relax its
tension and strain. Your car needs a regular
service to maintain its functioning ability.
Though your body isn't a machine, it ages, it
becomes overworked and if you want it to
function at optimum condition, there is no
better remedial method than the healing
touch.

I t is vitally important that you keep your bike well maintained to ensure it performs as it should, is a pleasure to ride and will last for years to come.
Whether you intend riding through the winter months or put your bike away in the garage or shed for the winter, now is a good time to have it checked over. If you get the bike looked at before putting it into storage, then when you come to start cycling again in the spring, there'll be no nasty surprises.
Here at Bristows we offer reasonably priced basic & full bicycle servicing as well as general cycle repairs, gear tuning, brake adjustments, wheel truing, puncture repairs and more. As a special offer for the month of February
we are offering £5 off our basic service (£40) and £10 off our full service (£80) (excluding parts). Please call us on (01733) 231755 or email
[email protected] to book and bring the advert from this magazine with you when bringing the bike into us.

The Whinge
Suicide Brunette
T his month has been a
d i f f i c u l t mon t h .
Disaster has struck the
household. Since moving
house just before Christmas
(no it really didn’t seem
like a good idea at the
time but sometimes things
work out that way) a
major catastrophe has
fallen upon this otherwise
happy home.
It wasn’t the move itself, that all went
smoothly even if it did take a lot of work –
little tip for those thinking of moving, don’t
do it just a single day after going away on
holiday because it will be a little bit fraught.
The old house went back to the landlord
efficiently with the minimal of remedial work,
nothing more stressful than a couple of
picture hooks to remove and make good.
Neither was it the electricity, gas or water. Those transitions occurred with no fuss
whatsoever.
The post was transferred from old
address to new and even the wheelie bin
cleaners and window cleaner transferred
effortlessly.
So what was the problem; it wasn’t the
dentist, optician or doctor and even Sky
turned up on the arranged day and we had
the TV ready in time for Christmas, in fact we
were nothing more than a few hours without
access to the myriad of Christmas repeats
and dodgy old films.
The problem was much worse than all of
those things put together.
We were unconnected – there I said it.
We were unable to get access to the
internet. Now to a lot of people reading this
you might think “so what”. But to put it in
context my (now ex-) boss (see last month)
suggested that I should be put on suicide
watch. Hilarious, I know. But I’ve been a
month now without regular access to the
web and it’s been absolute hell. I’m
supposed to be starting my own business,
but the first problem is that the business will
be internet based – you might start to see
the beg inni ngs o f
frustration. But that’s just
the tip of the iceberg
because I understand just
how reliant I am on
technology for almost all
aspects of my life & so are
my family & the internet is
the core of the technology.
I’ve even had to resort to
using my mobile to make
phone calls – how quaint –
a function that I’d almost forgotten how to
use. I may even have to dig out my old fax
in order to submit this article on time!
If you think I’m making a fuss over nothing
then I suggest two possibilities, firstly you
generally live an unconnected life and so a
lack of internet won’t matter to you – in
which case I cannot empathize because
I’ve always had a technology driven lifestyle.
The second possibility is that you are con-nected but think I’m exaggerating, in which
case give it a go yourself. Try a whole week
without using the internet, no on-demand
players, no emails & definitely no Wikipedia.
In the midst of all this turmoil at least I’ve
had some time to sort out the house and
empty all the crates the movers left. But I
started to go stir crazy around about Boxing
Day and have found a temporary solution;
free wi-fi hotspots.
However, this brings other problems and
now I’m going to have to spend the next
month detoxing from all the coffee. Which is
why you may have just read some long
rambling sentences in this whinge and
missing commas and pauses where you
might need some – for best effect drink
several very strong coffees and then read it
again because it’ll start to make more sense
if you read it very quickly.
But I shall not start the detox immediately
because I’m still internetless and feel the
need for another coffee!

In The Night Sky #23
I n March this year we should get to see the
comet PANSTARRS, so I thought this month
I would devote this space to explain one
of the fundamentals of modern astronomy –
the Messier Catalogue. This particular
catalogue is one of the staple lists of objects
that all astronomers will hope to tick
everything off on.
Charles Messier was born on 26th June
1730 and spent most of his life comet
hunting. Unfortunately a lot of the time he
thought he’d found a comet it turned out to
be something else – usually a cluster of stars
or a distant galaxy. So he compiled a list of
things that the observer might confuse with
comets but are actually something else –
the Messier Catalogue.
In 1757 he was searching for Halley’s
comet based on information calculated by
another astronomer, Delisle. Unfortunately
these calculations contained an error and
Messier was searching in the wrong place.
He did, however, believe that he’d
discovered a different comet-like object.
This was later discovered to be what we now
know as the Crab Nebula. However,
because of his mistake he created the Mess-
ier Catalogue to prevent confusion for other
comet hunters, the Crab Nebula became
the first item on the list and is also known as
M1. The catalogue was first published by
Messier in 1774 under the title “Catalogue of
Nebulae and Star Clusters” and included
items M1 to M45.
By 1801 Messier discovered his final
comet bringing his tally to 20 (13 original
discoveries and the other 7 co-discoveries.
Messiers’ final catalogue published in 1782
contained 103 items, although since then
another 7 deep space items have been
credited to Messier and today the
catalogue contains 110 items – the brightest
deep space items visible in the Northern sky.
You will have seen at least one of these
items almost every night when you look up
at the sky – you may know it as the seven
sisters or the Pleiades or as Messier dubbed
it, M45 (which appeared as the last item in
his first published list). Why it’s in the list is
unsure because it doesn’t look anything like
a comet and has been known about for
many centuries. Homer makes reference to
itin both the Illiad and the Odyssey and it’s
also mentioned 3 times in the Bible. It is in
actual fact one of the nearest star clusters to
Earth and is very young at around 100 to 150
million years old.
You can find it in Taurus and on the 15th
of February at around 20:00 hrs you’ll see
them right next to Jupiter.

COULD YOU HELP CARE FOR SOMEONE ELSE’S
CHILD?
There are over 300 children in care in Peterborough. We find out from one city couple what it’s like caring for some of those children in need. “It can be a really rocky road at times, but if
you’ve got a spare room and some love to give, it’s definitely the most rewarding thing you can do.” That’s according to Liz and Jenny, who are
two of a number of kind-hearted people in Peterborough who choose to care for children needing a temporary home while they are unable to live with their own families. They both had careers in childcare and a
room to spare and decided that fostering was a natural progression in their lives and something they could really invest in. After six months of interviews, courses and
assessments, the couple were successfully approved to foster. Although a lengthy and thorough process, within an hour of being approved, the couple were contacted and asked if they would take a sibling group of three.
“We had initially agreed to care for 2 children aged 5 to 11, but when we were told it would mean separating one sibling from the other two, we just couldn’t let it happen,” said Liz. Being approved to foster by no means
suggests the challenges are over. There is always more to learn about the child in your care and a variety of courses available to support you along the way. “We went to a class for grief, loss and
separation and it was invaluable. The council’s courses really help teach us how to stay emotionally level,” said Liz. “It’s a lot to adapt to; there are rules and
regulations to follow but we know that they’re in place for a reason. It’s as much about pro-tecting yourself as it is the child, & all part of the role. Safer caring is really, really important. “Our focus is, and always has been the
children; it’s not what we want or need, it’s all about them. We wouldn’t change anything; it has improved our family life in so many ways.”
To find out more about fostering, drop-in for an informal chat over a coffee on: Thurs. 28 February, 3pm to 5pm, Costa Coffee, Brotherhood Retail Park, Walton, Peterborough. Sat. 6 April, 3pm to 5pm, Andronica’s Coffee Shop, Peterborough Garden Park, Eye. Alternatively call (01733) 317427 or visit www.peterboroughfostering.co.uk.

time to redefine yourself, personally & professionally.
PISCES FEB. 19 – MARCH 20 A dreamy & contented month for Pisceans,
motivational Mars & imaginative Neptune
are both in your sign. Try not to be
impatient as the pace is quite slow for
this month. Enjoy & connect with the flow of the
universe. The new moon on the 10th
could lead to
amazing new insight & possible romantic adventures.
ARIES MARCH 21 - APRIL 20 Friends and social encounters are at the
top of your agenda during February,
particularly around the new moon on the
10th. Motivational Mars is travelling
through sensitive Pisces in a rather emotional sector
of your chart. Soft & gentle feelings are highlighted,
your imagination and intuition are at an all time high.
TAURUS APRIL 21 - MAY 21 Venus, your ruling planet is in innovative
Aquarius & travelling through the career
sector of your chart. Restless thoughts
may fill your mind & a professional review
is now on the cards. The Aquarius new moon on the
10th
could lead to a romantic adventure, urging you
to find your strengths & weaknesses & explore them.
GEMINI MAY 22 - JUNE 21 Restless Gemini is eager to be on the go
again. Both the Sun and Venus in
Aquarius ensure that your mind is even
busier than usual. With your ruler Jupiter
now picking up the pace in your sign, it’s time for
expansion on all levels and this month is definitely
favourable for learning something new and exciting.
CANCER JUNE 22 - JULY 22 Your financial affairs come into the
spotlight during this month. Currently
your primary concern is improving your
income and finding innovative ways to do
so. Forceful Jupiter in Gemini brings intuitive and
insightful ideas to the forefront and you’ll discover
new ways of being resourceful.
LEO JULY 23 - AUGUST 23 The warrior planet Mars is journeying
through intuitive Pisces in the financial
sector of your chart. Pioneering ways of
increasing income are top of your list.
Use this time wisely as it’s very beneficial for inner
reflection, developing & renewing your creativity.
The new moon on the 10th increases your awareness.
VIRGO AUG. 24 - SEPT. 22 With both the Sun & Venus in individu-
alistic Aquarius & in prominent positions
in your chart, you might be rethinking
your ultimate vision and your goals.
Try not to overemphasize your problems; after the
10th
you should have more energy and confidence
to present yourself in a very positive new light.
LIBRA SEPT. 23 - OCT. 23 Both the Sun and your ruler Venus in
Aquarius are lighting the love & romance
area of your chart. February is a very
positive month on all levels; Abundant
Jupiter in Gemini offers new opportunities, possibly
in far away places. Interesting creative ideas should
be coming in now, go ahead and follow them.
SCORPIO OCT. 24 - NOV. 22 Your home and family are in the
spotlight during February. Planetary
energy puts the emphasis on spending
time and attention on your personal
relationships. Your ruler, transformational Pluto,
assists in communication and helps you to be even
more determined to work hard for what you desire.
SAGITTARIUS NOV 23 - DEC 21
With your ruler, abundant Jupiter,
moving into Gemini, your confidence is
soaring and is bound to earn you the
respect of your colleagues and friends.
Innovative new ways of getting your message
across is the theme for this month. The new moon
on the 10th
can bring positive advancement.
CAPRICORN DEC. 22 - JAN. 20 Transformational Pluto in your sign
assists you to plan your year ahead and
make some sweeping changes. With the
Sun & Venus in your financial sector, a
review is certainly part of this new direction. You
might re-evaluate the meaning of your possessions;
clarity comes after the new moon on the 10th.
