Hello everyone!

“The English winter, ending in July, to recommence in August”, The words of Lord Byron no less. Mmm.... well I have always thought it unwise to take the opium infused musings of Mr Byron too seriously. Beautiful as some of them are. Rather look forward to a time when we are all aired out in the sunshine before this edition gets to your front door. Now I always thought that a weight loss diet meant something that is sometimes uninspiring and that sufferance was part of the deal? Well this month, Sam shares a “snippet” from a day with Slimming World (pg.34). Looks good to me.

The folks from Smart Fitness (pg.19) are coming back to the beautiful surroundings of Montacute House where you are sure to find a session that suits your own situation from a wide range of options from “Buggy Fitness” to the “Active Seniors Garden Stroll.” While in the realm of beautiful surroundings there's lots happening at the forthcoming open days at Lytes Cary Manor (pg.37) much including a reading by Jane Borrowdale from her new novel “The Knot”, there's also an invitation for families to have ago at something from the list of “50 things to do before you are 11 and 3/4”. You can even make a grass trumpet !

A little later in the month St. Catherine's, Montacute, host the “Festival of Flowers and Photographs” (pg.14) and at Odcombe village hall the “80th Odcombe Flower, Produce and Craft Show”, not forgetting the Car Boot Sale outside the Village Hall on the afternoon of the same day! (pg17)

Last but not least, don't forget the “Ham Hill Experience Day” at the beginning of September, during which you have an opportunity to visit the archaeological excavation on what is after all the largest Hill Fort in the Country! We had a great time at this event last year.

Our centre pages feature a cycling event in aid of the McMillan Nurses, and seeing that we will all need something to do on the beach or in the garden (whilst enjoying the sunshine) we thought we’d make this issue a “Bumper” puzzle edition! (pages 7,16,38 and 42). You may still need to get a paper for Dad and the “Look in” and “Jackie” Summer Specials for the children. Oh .... and some paper flags of course!

Well, we wish you a lovely August and as we are constantly reminding ourselves, there are, after all, more important things than the weather....... Bring on the Medals!

If all has gone to plan (that’s a big if!) then August should be a very satisfying month on your plot, with your hard work being repaid by ample harvests of a good range of fruit and veg. The reality tends to be that the excitement of seeing your crops grow and ripen is initially followed by much enjoyment of the first fruits of your labour, soon replaced by ‘What do I do with all these’! Certain crops, courgettes and tomatoes, can almost guarantee this sequence of events!

Sharing with friends and neighbours is great but often they will have a glut of exactly the same thing at just the same time. So here are some simple ideas for storing and preserving your produce. It may be a long time before you are harvesting fresh peas or raspberries again but that doesn’t mean that you can’t be enjoying your home grown produce throughout the winter.

Onions and garlic that have been lifted and left to dry can be plaited and hung in a cool, dry place. Net bags, or tights, work if you don’t fancy plaiting. Potatoes can be stored in boxes or paper sacks in a dark, dry building but you should check them regularly, removing any that show signs of rotting.

A good size freezer is a real bonus for making the most of your produce. Blanching and then freezing works for many vegetables. The key to success is to cool quickly after blanching so have a bowl of cold water at the ready.

Another option, and one that can work well for all those tomatoes, is to find a good recipe that you can cook, freeze and use later (pasta sauce with your own tomatoes and home grown basil?). Even ‘difficult to freeze’ veg such as courgettes can be incorporated into a sauce, or blanched, frozen and then added to a stew at a later date. Cooking and freezing can work well for fruit too - apple or rhubarb are good stewed and frozen, all ready for use in a crumble or pie. If you have a really good fruit crop then find a good recipe book and get started on some jam making? It’ll be delicious on your toast in the morning, and what better gift than a pot of homemade raspberry jam?

One wonderful little book, that deals with just this subject is ‘How to store your garden produce’ by Piers Warren. It’s packed with information about how to store just about anything. Happy harvesting!

Where were you born? In Essex. We moved to this area about 10 years ago when I gave up my job in Sales and Training.

Where did you work before you took on the Fleur? We had the ‘Cross Keys’ in Lydford-on-Fosse for 4 years and have been at the Fleur for 19 months now.

What about Family? I’ve got 2 boys aged 19 and 21, they occasionally help in the pub and my wife Lorraine is a Nurse but she also works here Fridays. We live in North Cadbury but I stay a few nights a week at the pub.

Do you have any hobbies? I don’t really have time for hobbies, I do love going on holidays and travelling and if there’s time I play a bit of Darts and Pool.

What makes you happy? Happy people!

Do you have any pets? A German Shepherd called Prince. We’ve had him 4 years - he was in and out of kennels, we’re his 3rd home.

What is your favourite food? You can’t beat steak and chips or a good stew, I like food that hasn’t been messed about with or been drizzled on!

What TV programme makes you laugh? Faulty Towers, Black Adder, Monty Python - silly stuff that doesn’t take itself too serious.

Any favourite films? I can’t really sit still for long enough to enjoy a film. I’d rather be busy.

What was the last luxury item you bought? I’ve just bought myself a new car, a bit of a toy, now the kids are older I thought I’d treat myself.

If money and time were no object where would you go on holiday? Actually we’ve just started planning a holiday. There are four of us that’ll be 50 in a space of about 18 months, so in a couple of years time we‘re hoping to go on a Caribbean Cruise and also include Las Vegas in the trip. Not sure yet which way round we’ll do it but that’s the plan.

Most annoying thing? I suppose people who break commitments and let you down. That's got to be the worst.

What is the best thing about your job? It’s not really work, it’s non stop socializing really. I think to do this job you have to be either completely mad or totally committed to it or a bit of each, not sure which balance is mine.

What is your proudest moment? I think that must be taking the kids home from hospital after they were born.

If you had 3 wishes what would they be? That’s a hard one, I don’t really worry about things but a happy and healthy family and friends and for the kids to be successful.

Stoke-sub-Hamdon to Land’s End

Day one:- The riders assembled at Stanchester to load the support vehi-cle with overnight requirements, a gen-tle run to the High Street for pictures & the ‘off’, then out through Norton, through the lanes to Lopen Head, Bar-rington, Stocklynch, then the long climb up to Castle Neroche on the Blackdowns. A showery ride across the hills to Culmstock, Uffculme and Willand for tea break after 33 miles. Refreshed & in improving weather but still into a strong wind, it was down the

old A38 towards Exeter, taking to the lanes to avoid the City Centre & onto the very hilly B road to the overnight stop at Moretonhampstead.

Day two:- This was always going to be a challenge, across the open expanse of Dartmoor to reach Tavistock, but was even more so with the strong headwind, at least it wasn’t raining. After a tea stop it was over the hills & into Cornwall at Horsebridge, on to Lostwithiel & then the rain really started as we hit the lanes to the overnight stop at Golant YHA. The hostel was occupied by a party of school children (about 50) who were interested in our ride and many of them donated to our cause. The joy of the open road

It was a bit wet at times.

In memory of former Stoke resident Ken Davis, his son-in law Simon decided to organise a 3 day cycle ride to Land’s end to raise

funds for Macmillan Cancer Support who had supported Ken & his

family during his illness. With the help of D.R. Jones, Rock and Road

Bike Shop, Godden & Curtis & Asda and with the riders paying all their own expenses all sponsorship

money would go to Macmillan.

Day three:- A small shower to start then clearing skies but still windy as we set off via St. Austell to Truro for early morning tea, on over more hills (we rode past 3 TV transmitters on the whole route & they are always high up). With just 13 miles to go a stop seemed in order, so into Marazion for a break overlooking St.Michael’s Mount in bright sunshine. Then it was off through Penzance, a couple more hills and then the arrival at Land’s End, just under 200 miles, lots of climbing, head wind (strong at times) and rain, what fun we had!!

But still time for some fun
