THE "GUTE" COLLECTION OF THEPOSTAL HISTORY OF THE SKILLING BANCO STAMPS

INTRODUCTION to the SKILLING BANCO period(1.7.1855until30.6.1858)

In1855Swedenhad3.5million inhabitantsonanareaof449'000sq.kms.Almost55%ofthesurfacewasforested,thus forestry and farming by small landowners were themain occupations. The growing industrialization and tradewerehelpedby thepostal reformswith reduced ratesandimprovedservices,whichcanbefollowedupbytherapidlyincreasedusageofstamps.Theaimofthiscollectionwastomakeasurveyoftheusageof the 1855 Skilling Banco stamps, Sweden's first issue,consistingoffivevalues.In1856thesewerecompletedwithasingle"black”stampfor theStockholmlocalpost.Thesesix stamps showed various aspects of printings, deliveriesandusages.

PrintingsandDeliverieshadbeenassembledintheirpostalhistorical perspectives, which have been made possibledue to records available in the postal archives, completedwith special papers. The printer supplied a stamp depot,responsible for the deliveries, which were handled on a“firstinandfirstout"basis.Thedeliveryjournal,calledthe"Controlbook”stillexists,showingtheexactnumbersofeachdeliverytoeveryPostOffice.

Letter rates:with the introduction of stamps, Sweden alsoadopteduniformratesfortheinlandmail.Forlettersabroad,the old rates remained in effect, until new conventionsnecessitated changes. Franked covers are known to 19different foreign countries, with eight of these known withone example only. Aside the Scandinavian countries, lessthen 200 foreign covers are recorded. Inland and foreignletterscouldalsobesentwithouttheusageofstamps.Place handstamps: as the Swedish Postal Service wasfounded in 1636, in July 1855 there were 153 offices(Places) with 19 more added during the Skilling Bancoperiod(whichendedinconnectionwiththecurrencychangeinto "öre"values).The places are indexed (see pp. 18-19)accordingtotheirspellingatthattime.

Thiscollectionhasbeenaccumulatedoveraperiodofmorethan 50 years, with my continuous respect of the culturalheritage absorbed in the philatelic material. ValuableinformationhasbeengiventomebymyfellowcollectorsandIwishtoconveymysincerethankstothem,andtothestaffatourPostalMuseuminStockholm,whowillinglysharedfromtheirstored-upmultitudeoffactsofSwedishpostalhistory.

GustafJohanssonwasbornonthesmallislandofGotland,Sweden.GotlandissituatedintheBalticSeaalmostmidwaybetweenSwedenandRussia.Alltheinhabitantsarereferredto by the mainland Swedes as “Gute,” and this is theexplanationastowhyGustafJohanssonusesthepseudonym"Gute"forhisinternationalphilatelicexhibits.

Gustaf Johansson has been an entrepreneur all his life.However, he retired in the 70's and passed control of hisbusiness to other members of his family. His son JöranJohanssonisthemanagingdirectorofthefamilybusiness.Additionally, Jöran Johansson is also a keen philatelistwhocollects the1869 issueof theUnitedStates.Gustaf'sdaughter,UllaOlsson,alsojoinstheteamandisspecializedinIcelandPostalStationery,19thcentury.

ApartfromhisGrandPrixwinningNorwegianexhibit,GustafJohansson formed a collection of Swedish Postal Historyofthe"SkillingBanco"stamps(thefinalportionofwhichisoffered in thiscatalogue),whichhadbeenexhibited in theFIPChampionshipclassandwonfourGoldmedalsandsixLargeGoldMedals.HewasamemberoftheRoyalPhilatelicSocietyofLondonsince1990.Gustafwasappointedtosignthe"RollofDistinguishedPhilatelists"in2003.

The"Gute"CollectionhasbeendistinguishedwithtenGoldorLargeGoldmedalsinFIPinternationalexhibitionsbetweenFilacept'88andBelgica2001.

2.3BidordersreceivedbyDAVIDFELDMANS.A.oronitswebsitebeforetherelativeauctionshavepriorityoverroombidsinthecaseofLiveRoomauctions.ClientsgivingbiddinginstructionstoDAVIDFELDMANS.A.maymakealternativeoffersand/orlimitthetotaloftheirexpenditureinadvance.Bidsmarked"BUY"areconsideredasuptotentimesthequotedestimatepricewheresuchexists.Bidsmadeinothercurrenciesthantheadvertisedcurrencyoftheauction,willbeconvertedintothatcurrencyatthemarketrateofthedayofreceiptbyDAVIDFELDMANS.A.Bidsarestandingandholdgoodforatleast60daysfromtheauctionperiod.DAVIDFELDMANS.A.reservestherighttoinvoicebiddersuptotheendofthe60dayperiod,paymentbeingdueimmediately.

3. THE AUCTION

3.1LiveRoomauctionsareheldunderthecontroloftherelativesupervisingauthorityatitslocation.Therelativesupervisingauthorityhasnoliability.Theauctionwillbeheldundertheministryofa“huissierjudiciaire”oftheCantonandRepublicofGeneva.ThecurrencyoftheauctionisEuros.

3.2PrerogativesofDavidFeldmanS.A.:DAVIDFELDMANS.A.maywithdraw,groupdifferently,divideorrefusetoknockdownanylot.DAVIDFELDMANS.A.reservestherighttorefuseanybidordersand/orforLiveRoomauctions,refuseadmittancetotheauctionroom,atitsdiscretion,toanybodywhosoever.DAVIDFELDMANS.A.cannotbeheldresponsibleforanyphysicalaccidentthatmayoccuronthepremiseswhereauctionstakeplace.

3.3Bidders'representativesandauctionagents:Anypersonbiddingfortheaccountofathirdpartyisfullyliableforanyobligationarisingfromsuchbidding.Thisresponsibilityisnotablyapplicablefortheverificationoftheconditionandforthepaymentofboughtlots

3.4Adjudication:Each lot issoldonbehalfof therespectiveownertothehighestbidderwhobecomesthebuyeratthenexthighestbidstep,whichistheadjudicationprice.In addition to the adjudication price, the buyer pays an all-in fee of 19.5% to cover commission, charges and expenses including lotting fees, adjudication taxes, insurance, packing, mailing, export formalities etc. whether all incurred in particular cases or not. VAT(SalesTax)-NotesforguidanceconcerningauctionsforwhichthelotsarelocatedinSwit-zerland:BuyersdomiciledabroadarenotliableforthistaxoncethegoodsaredulyexportedfromSwitzerland.DAVIDFELDMANS.A.arepleasedtoarrangethisexport;alternatively,clientsmaymaketheirownarrangementsandfurnishDAVIDFELDMANS.A.withproofofexport,stampedbySwisscustoms.AnypurchasesbybuyerswhowishtokeeptheirpurchasesinSwitzerlandwillbeliabletoVATat7.6%ofthepurchasepriceinSwissFrancsattheconvertedEurovalueduringtheauction.

3.5Payment:Salepricepluscommissionareduefor immediatepaymentas invoicedagainstdeliveryofthelots.PaymentinothercurrenciesisacceptedattheratesofexchangeofthedayasquotedbyaSwissmajorbank.Thebidderswhoaresuccessfulwithwhomithasbeenexpresslyagreedthattheypayafterthesaleunderspecialconditions,areduetopaythesalepriceandthecommissionaccordingtothoseterms.Inthesecases,DAVIDFELDMANS.A.keepstheadjudicated

lotswhicharedeliveredtothebuyersonfullsettlementoftheiraccount.Deliveryofthepurchasedlotsbypostoranyothermeansifinstructedbythebuyerincludingcostofnormaltransitinsurancecoverisattheexpenseofthebuyer.Titleorownershipofthepurchasedlots,deliveredornot,remainswiththeauctioneeronbehalfoftheselleruntilpaymenthasbeenmadeinfull.

3.6Specialextendedpaymentfacility:DAVIDFELDMANS.A.mayofferaspecialextendedpaymentfacilityforbuyers.Inthesecases,thebuyermaychoosetopayaminimumof25%ofthetotalinvoiceimmediately,andthebalanceoveramaximumperiodof6months,payinganequalinstalmentattheendofeachmonth.Interestpluschargesof1%isdebitedtothebuyer'saccountattheendofeachmonthfromtheauctiondate.Whenthespecialextendedpaymentfacilityhasbeengranted,thebuyerunderstandsthatanyclaimsregardinghispurchasesmustbemadewithin30daysoftheauctionsaledate,eventhoughthelotsmaybeheldbyDAVIDFELDMANS.A.awaitingfullsettlementoftheaccount.Untildelivery,alllotsmaybeexaminedbytheirrespectivebuyersattheofficesofDAVIDFELDMANS.A.

3.7Pledge:Untilfullsettlementoftheaccount,thebuyergrantstoDAVIDFELDMANS.A.apledgeonanyandallpropertiesheldbyDAVIDFELDMANS.A.,acquiredpriorto,duringand/orafteranyauction.Thispledgesecurestherepaymentofanyamountdueinprincipals,interests,commissions,costsandotherpossiblefees.DAVIDFELDMANS.A.isentitled,butnotobliged,torealisefreelythepledgeassetswithoutfurtherformalitiesandwithoutpreviousnoticeifthebuyerisindefaultwiththepaymentofhisdebtsorwiththefulfilmentofanyotherobligationhereunder.Forthispurpose,DAVIDFELDMANS.A.isnotboundtocomplywiththeformalitiesoftheFederalLawdealingwithactionsfordebtandbankruptcyproceedings;inaddition,DAVIDFELDMANS.A.maychoosetoinstituteorgoonwiththeusualproceedingswithouthavingbeforehandsoldthepledgedgoodsandwithouthavingmoreovergiventhemup.

4. GUARANTEE

4.1Extentoftheguarantee:Subjecttoparagraph4.3below,theauthenticityofallphilatelicitemssoldintheauctionisguaranteedforaperiodof30daysfromtheauctiondate,withtheexpressexclusionofanyotherfault(s).AnyreclamationregardingauthenticitymustcometothenoticeofDAVIDFELDMANS.A.onthedeliveryofthelotsbutatthelatestwithin30daysfromthatdate.Beforedelivery,whichmaytakeplaceafterthe30daysperiod,thelotspurchasedmaybeexaminedattheGenevaofficesofDAVIDFELDMANS.A.Thebuyerwhosereclamationismadeafter30daysfromtheauctiondatelosesallrightstotheguarantee.SuchreclamationwillnotbevalidbyDAVIDFELDMANS.A..Ifanextensionoftheperiodisrequiredinordertosubstantiatetheclaimwithanexpertise,arequestforsuchextensionmustbemadetoDAVIDFELDMANS.A.within30daysoftheauctiondate.Norequestforextensionwillbeconsideredbeyondthis30daysperiod.TheresultsoftheexpertiseforwhichanextensionwasagreedmustcometothenoticeofDAVIDFELDMANS.A.within3monthsoftheauctiondate.NofurtherextensionoftheperiodwillbeconsideredwithouttheexpressagreementinwritingofDAVIDFELDMANS.A.Onlyclaims,expertiseresultsorotherdetailswhicharemadewithintheagreedperiodswillbevalid.

4.2Expertiseandcounter-expertise:Shouldtheauthenticityofalotbequestioned,thebuyerisobligedtoprovideanexpertiseorcounter-expertisefromaprominentexpertinthefield,justifyingtheclaim.Ifastampisfoundbyarecognisedexperttakingfinancialresponsibilityforerrorstohavebeenforged,hemaymarkitaccordingly.Consequently,themarking"FALSCH"(forged)isnotconsideredanalteration.Inthecaseofsuchreclamation,DAVIDFELDMANS.A.reservestherighttorequest,atitsowndiscretion,oneormorefurtherexpertises.Allexpertiseandrelativechargesaccruetothevendor'saccountinthecaseofajustifiedclaim,ortothebuyer'saccountiftheclaimisnotjustified.Inthecaseofajustifiedclaim,thelotistakenbackandtheadjudicationpriceplusthecommissionarerefundedtothebuyer.InthecaseofdelayedpaymentduetoexpertiseagreedbyDavidFeldmanS.A.,interestischargedat50%thestandardrateforallclearedlots.IfDavidFeldmanS.A.hasnotagreedthenfullinterestisdue.

4.3 Exclusions: Lots described as collections, accumulations, selections, groups and thosecontainingduplicates,cannotbethesubjectofanyclaim.Claimsconcerninglotsdescribedasasetorgroupsofsetscontainingmorethanonestamp,canonlybeconsideredunderthetermsofparagraph4.1aboveiftheyrelatetomorethanonethirdofthetotalvalueofthelot.Lotswhichhavebeenexaminedbythebuyerorhisagent,lotsdescribedashavingdefectsorfaultscannotbesubjectedtoaclaimregardingdefectsorfaults.lllustratedlotscannotbesubjectedtoaclaimbecauseofperforations,centering,marginsorotherfactorsshownintheillustrations.

4.4LatePayment:Ifthepaymentoftheadjudicatedpricepluscommissionduebythebuyerisnotmadewithin30daysofthedateoftheauction,DAVIDFELDMANS.A.reservestherighttocancelthesaleanddisposeofthelot(s)elsewhereand/ortomakearecoursetoanylegalproceedingsinordertoobtainpaymentoftheamountsdueaswellasforanyincurreddamagesandlossesandanylegalexpenses.Achargeonoverduepaymentofatleast5%forthefirstmonthand2%permonthafterwardsplusexpensesincurredischargeableonanyoutstandingamountafter30daysofthedateoftheauction.Thebuyerwhoisindefaultinanywaywhatsoeverhasnorightofclaimunderanycircumstances.

4.5Exceptionally,theadjudicationpricewillbereducedtothelowestwinningbidwhereitisshownthatabuyerhasinadvertentlyincreasedthepricebyusingmorethanonemediumofbidding.

5. APPLICABLE LAW AND JURISDICTION

Unlessotherwisestated,allauctionsaswellasanyrightsandobligationsarisingfromthemshallbegovernedexclusivelybySwisslaw.AnylegalactionorproceedingwithrespecttotheauctionsshallbesubmittedtotheexclusivejurisdictionofthecourtsofGeneva,subjecttoappealtotheSwissFederalCourt inLausanne.Ineverycase,DAVIDFELDMANS.A.shallalsobeentitled,atitsdiscretion,tosueanybuyerindefaultathisplaceofresidence;insuchcase,Swisslawshallremainapplicableandinthecaseof issuesregardingpricevalue,theEuroisconvertedat itsSwissfrancvalueatthetimeoftheauction.
