Letter from the President – Winter 2017
Dave Ziemer
Greetings Brothers and Sisters of Clan Gunn, let me introduce myself.
My name is Dave Ziemer, newly elected as President of CGSNA. I
want to begin by sincerely thanking Rich for his years of faithful
service as our President. I know I have some big shoes to fill, but with
people like Rich Gunn, Charlie Kehm, Chuck Franz, Alise Erickson,
Jerred Gunn and Anne Gunn as part of the team, I hope to serve you
well.
2016 was an interesting year, filled with many wonderful things. We saw Iain Gunn take his place as our
Chief. There were many well attended festivals & games across North America where Gunns could share
our history, and bring some wandering Gunns back into the fold. We had a great AGM where 45 of our
members feasted, toasted and enjoyed the all that the Chicago games had to offer. However, there were
many challenges as well.
Last year saw a continuation of the of the decline of new memberships, as well as renewals. This is not
peculiar to Clan Gunn; all the clans are suffering with the same lack of interest. We are all competing
with a multitude of competitors for the attention of people with Scottish heritage. The average age of
members involved in their clans’ societies is getting older every year. Young people of Scottish lineage
don’t seem interested any more. I know it seems like I’m being a little negative right out of the box, but
there is always a great deal of hope! For instance, now that you can renew or apply for Gunn
membership on our website, it’s easier than ever to join and more people are doing so! We can all work
to reverse this trend if we put our heads together.
I think we must show people who take the time to visit us that we are more than just a cultural
organization, we are a FAMILY! I am not saying that we think we are the former, but from the comments
I hear from visitors to our display, that impression surely exists. One of the things I’ve noticed is that
some clans sit & socialize with themselves as visitors walk by their booths without being acknowledged. If
they would only get up and talk with the folks, they might kindle some interest in our collective cause.
Engagement is key! I want to hear from all our members. Everybody has talents & Ideas that need to be
shared. I’d love to see pictures, & hear stories from all the great things we do. And, most of all if any of
you have ideas that will help attract and keep members, let us know. No idea is unimportant, we all share
in this responsibility!
Clan Gunn is going to bigger than ever with all the great members of our family doing all the awesome
things that we do. I am so glad to be a part of future of Gunn!
Slàinte mhòr agad!
Dave

Recently, we have had several people reach out to us inquiring if we could find good homes for Gunn
items they possess. Pictures will be provided if they available.
Contact: Amy Rogers ([email protected]) My name is Amy Robeson Rogers. My father's family is from the Gunn Clan through the Robeson
line. When my father was alive, he and my mother enjoyed going to the Scottish Games in Savannah,
GA. One year they went to Scotland and, while there, ordered kilts made of ancient Gunn, which were
sent home to them when ready. Dad enjoyed wearing the whole outfit to the games and on special
occasions.
Dad died in 2010, and I have his kilt, jacket, belt and sporran. Mom hand knit his argyle socks with all
the appropriate colors (10.5 shoe).
I'm a bit sentimental about these items, but they are just hanging in my closet. There must be someone
you know who could use these or put them to good use.
(No Picture Available)
Contact: Heather Smith ([email protected]) These items are from Joan Robson. Joan’s husband, Art Robson, was a past President of the Clan Gunn Society of North
America. She has many great memories of the games in the U.S. and five trips with Clan Gunn in Scotland.

Adam B. Gunn, Olympic Silver Medalist
"Aut Pax aut bellum"- either peace or war, motto of the Gunn Clan
It is December, 1929. Wind driven sleet snaps electric lines in Buffalo, New York as thousands of frantic calls jam the switchboard of the local
power company. A supervisor works 72 hours with little rest and helps restore electric power to the city by Christmas morning. He is Olympic
silver medal winner Adam Beattie Gunn, and Christmas eve is his birthday.
Adam Gunn was born about 10pm, December 24 1872 in the northern Scottish town of Golspie. He was the younger of two sons in a large
family headed by its athletically minded father John Forseyth Gunn. The Gunn Clan traces its roots to the earliest known people in Scotland, as
well as Viking invaders. Such colorful characters as "Olaf the Black" and "Sweyn the Pirate" enliven the family history. No wonder Young Adam
set out for a life of adventure.
As a youth he competed at lawn bowling and various contests of strength. In 1886 he climbed nearby Mount Vraggie (Ben Bhraggie to the Scots),
with mischief on his mind and a chisel in his hand. His target was the controversial memorial built in the mid 1800’s to George Granville Leveson
-Gower, the immensely wealthy and immensely despised First Duke of Sutherland.
As did many Scotsmen before him, Adam B. Gunn left his native land as a young adult, and headed for North America. In 1893 he found work at
the General Electric power company in Buffalo. Soon the entire area was abuzz with tales of his athletic prowess. Boxing, Wrestling, Track and
Field, the 154 pound Adam Gunn excelled at them all, and took special delight in defeating the large, hulking opponents who challenged him.
Gunn’s strong suit was the all-around competition, which later evolved into the modern decathlon. In the all-around, 10 events were held in one
day with little time to rest in between. The events were; the 100 yard dash, shot put, high jump, walking race (880 yards), hammer throw, pole
vault, 120 yard high hurdles, 56 pound weight throw, broad jump and one mile run. Under the auspices of the Amateur Athletic Union, Gunn
took first place in the U.S. Championships in 1901 and 1902. The 1901 title was won in his adopted home town of Buffalo, NY site of that year’s
Pan-American exposition.
Adam Gunn headed for St Louis for the 1904 Olympic “all around” contest. His strongest challenge would come from Tom Kiely of Ireland, who
would go on to win 70 championships in high level athletic competitions. Rounding out the field were; reigning U.S. All-around champion Ellery
Clark, along with Truxton Hare, John Holloway and Max Emmerich. Adam Gunn had a window of opportunity for a gold medal as Keily posted
poor results in the first three events, including dead last in the 100 yard dash. But wins in the 880 yard walking race, hammer throw, 120 yard
high-hurdles, 56 pound weight throw and broad jump gave Keily an unbeatable score of 6,036 points. Gunn took the silver with 5,907, Truxton
Hare’s 5,813 was good for a bronze medal.
For at least 39 years Gunn continued working at the power company, as a superintendent of repairs and as a “radio noise detective” using the
latest equipment to find the sources of static on local radio receivers. Then the trail goes cold. I have not been able to find any information
about Gunn after the early 1930’s.
Today, his hometown of Golspie, Scotland is a tourist destination, complete with historic sites, sandy beaches and legendary links golf course.
And the statue to the First Duke of Sutherland? Its still there atop Mount Vraggie (ER, excuse me, Ben Bhraggie) and it still causes hard feelings.
Many would like to see the memorial to the Duke removed, (or even blown up), and replaced with a memorial to the people whose lives he
they say he destroyed. Its the Duke, you see, who is still partly blamed by some residents for the cruel way farmers were thrown off the land
during the “great highland clearance” in which the Gunn Clan lost vast land holdings.
So, if you are ever in Golspie, and you visit the aforementioned memorial, you may want to look closely at the base upon which the statue rests.
Possibly, just possibly you may still see the place where, in 1886 a Scottish lad defaced the memorial by carving into it his own name...Adam
Beattie Gunn.

A “Splash of Tartan” – Saturday 5
th August 2017 @ 7.30pm.
Following on from the recent article in the Winter 2017 Herald regarding next year’s Edinburgh Military Tattoo and the involvement of the Standing Council of Scottish Chiefs, Iain Gunn of Gunn has agreed to be present as one of the principal guests and to take the salute from the guard of honour at the above mentioned performance. The actual format of the Clan’s participation is still to be finalised but it will probably involve a march into the central arena with some narrative about the Clan’s history and we will of course, update you about this when we know the final programme. The organisers are trying to encourage as many of the clan (dressed in tartan where possible) to attend on their Chief’s night and in this respect, we have been offered guaranteed tickets for the above mentioned performance which will be held for us until 1
st March 2017 with ticket prices
ranging from £35 to £125. If you are interested in attending please contact: Rich Gunn at [email protected]. We are hoping to get at least 50 members of the Clan to support our Chief at the performance on Saturday 5
th August 2017 (7.30pm) but have been allocated a maximum of 150 tickets (which are
only being held to the 1st March 2017) so If you would like to attend, please try and book as soon
as possible. We are also looking to organise a Mini-gathering around this event (details so be announced at a later date) so the trip to Edinburgh will hopefully be doubly worthwhile. We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible.
CLAN GUNN NIGHT AT THE EDINBURGH TATTOO
For those of you planning to attend the Military Tattoo in Edinburgh on 5 August it’s time to begin purchasing your tickets. I have been designated as the contact person for those wanting access to the Tattoo website for tickets. There is a block of 150 tickets held for Clan Gunn until March. Our Chief, Iain and his wife, Bunty will have assigned seating, possibly in the Royal Box. Iain’s son, John and family members will be in a nearby section as will Linda and I, former UK President Alan Robson and 8 others so far from the U.S. We’d love to see as many as possible at the event so please reach out to me for the login information. I’ve been asked to verify the validity of the request prior to passing on the login so that scalpers don’t get it. Look forward to seeing you there. Rich Gunn, High Commissioner to North America

(Fabric picture—kilt being sold by
Catherine Chapman. Please contact Rich
Gunn)
This scan of the fabric does not do it
justice. The red is not this bright and the
background is not this dark. It has a slightly
olive hue and is one of the richest
colorations I’ve ever seen.
It is a beautiful fabric — first class which is
the only fabric that Celtic Craft uses.
