UE21670 26 Melodic Studies for Guitar

These pleasing little studies have been written to help

the student to develop a basic technique based upon

the traditional teachings of Francisco Tárrega,

Fernando Sor and Mauro Giuliani to name but a few.

They are enjoyable to play, with memorable melodies,

harmonics, and rhythms. The studies progress from

relatively easy to more demanding pieces so it is an

album designed to accompany the student on their

journey as they advance from an initial to an

intermediate standard. The contemporary style of the

music is tuneful and light so that they are both fun and

interesting to play and fingerings have been carefully

considered for accuracy and ease of facility. As a

benefit, most of the 26 Melodic Studies are also suited

for exams or performance. Progressive studies for

beginner to intermediate guitarists.

UE21671 Momentos Españoles for Guitar

Spanish Latin music which are a colourful addition

to any repertoire. Written for the intermediate-level

guitarist in accessible keys with left and right-hand

fingering suggestions included they are ideal for

audience alike These 16 solos for classical guitar have

been inspired by the rich and vivid rhythmic

influences of Spanish Latin music. The pieces have

been written in accessible keys for the guitar. They

are compact and melodic in structure and are

composed in a variety of time signatures and guitar

tunings, all adding to the diversity and descriptive

nature of the collection. Whether a Sarabande or a

Bossa Nova, each solo is edited with convenient and

helpful left and right hand fingerings. "Momentos

Españoles" will be a varied and expressive addition to

the guitarist's repertoire.

MUE 100 Two Lullabies Chanté

These two little lullabies charm their way into your programme. They are moderately easy at about grade 4 technically. They are also very melodic and suite the guitar admirably. These lullabies can often be heard broadcast on Radio Classic FM.

Both of these pieces are recorded by Craig Ogden on

Nimbus Records NI5811.

Grade 4

MUE 101 Mazurka No.1 & Waltz No.1

The Mazurka is a traditional Polish country dance. It is in triple time with a certain accentuation on the second beat. Chopin wrote a great many Mazurkas for the piano. The Waltz, a dance in ¾ time became very popular in the ballroom in the last quarter of the 18th Century. The waltzes of Johann Strauss were popular throughout Europe. Both of these pieces are recorded by Craig Ogden on

Nimbus Records NI5811.

Grade 4

MUE 102 Habanera

The Habanera finds its origins as a slow Cuban song and dance, which became very popular in Spain. It is in simple duple time and has a dotted rhythm. This guitar solo is full of the richness and depth which is typical of such a piece. The strength of the melody helps conjure up the elegant, exaggerated movements of the Latin dancers.

MUE 103 Musicas Latinas

The five pieces within this suite are distinctively Latin American in style. They are evocative, their strong rhythmic pulses in the Ritmos de Dança, Folia and Samba de Rio generate a lively setting of Carnival. Having said that the music is contrasting and the Romantica and tremolo work entitled Sonhos de Bolivia, are well suited to the dreamy sense of pensiveness the guitar interprets so well.

MUE 104 Theme, Impromptus and Conclusion

This set of Theme and Variations is dedicated to Craig Ogden. Craig is one of the foremost guitarists today who has not only the ability to perform new music but has been heralded by many critics for his interpretation and understanding of modern music. Each piece is individual but there is a sense of continuity and of the whole coming together throughout the work. The initial theme is quite bare and open to a liberal interpretation with the following impromptus developing to an exciting Conclusion.

MUE 105 Las Aventuras de un Caballero

Andante

This suite of nine pieces, inspired by the story of Don Quixote by the Spanish author Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, captures the exploits of the knight errant. Along with his faithful but often bemused manservant Sancho their bizarre adventures are conveyed in this imaginative piece of guitar writing. The text is taken from a transla-tion by P.A. Motteaux and Published by Everyman's Library. My thanks are extended to Everyman's Library for their kind permission to include some of the text from their edition.

MUE 106 Imágenes de España

These four pieces have been inspired by the poems of the Spanish poet and playwright Federico García Lorca. The vigour of the rhythms combined with colourful harmonies conjures up the essence characteristic of Spanish life as portrayed within Lorca's poems. My thanks are extended to Tony Kline for his kind permission to include his translations of Lorca's original poems into this edition. Further translations by Tony Kline can be accessed from his website.

MUE 107 The Pilgrim‘s Tale

Inspired by William Chaucer‘s epic tale the music sets out to depict a journey of awareness. The opening harmonics represent the hand bells pilgrims often used whilst on their journey. The theme travels through a series of extensions with the bells reiterating the advancement of their gradual but progressive procession.

The piece is technically demanding but well worth the effort of learning as it embraces so much of the variety of technical effects the guitar is so capable of producing.

MUE 108 Fantasia No.1

Imagine the sea in its various moods. A tranquil sea can so often change quickly into a boiling turmoil that can seem to come from nowhere. This free style piece tries to convey that impression. It opens with a dream like section Solenne then progresses, becoming more volatile as the mood changes character, with dramatic increases of pulse as it gathers momentum. Then, after the excitement of the Agitato and Scherzo the movement once more becomes subdued. Finally, the reiteration of the opening theme brings the music to a gentle conclusion. It is technically quite a demanding piece with strong melodic lines that are both pensive and dramatic, being well suited to the timbre of the guitar.

MUE 109 Gaelic Suite for Flute and Guitar

The Lark of Connacht: Connaught is a province of the north-western Republic of Ireland. Skylarks are known as the leaders of the dawn chorus, the Larks sing as they soar into the air and sustain their song as they descend.

The Spirit of Finn Mac Cumhail: Finn Mac Cumhail ("the fair son of Cumhail") was a legendary Irish hero. He was a Chieftain and Bard and a man of mighty exploits. Finn was the leader of a band of warrior-poets, the name Fenian is derived from his.

The Voyage of Bran Mac Febal: Bran was summoned by Manannan, Son of Lir, to visit Emhain, the Isle of Women. His summons appeared whilst he slept, as a sound of sweet music. When he awoke he had a silver branch in his hand covered with silver-white apple blossom. The next morning he set out in a fleet of curraghs. They rowed through becalmed seas and a mountainous tempest. Upon finally reaching the island, Bran fell in love with one of the women who warned him that should he return to Ireland he could only look and talk to his friends but none from his party should step ashore. Having arrived at the shores of their homeland after what had only seemed a year away, they hailed strangers on the shore but nobody recognised Bran or his crew. They said that no such man was now alive. This was too much for Nechtan, one of his crew, who boldly stepped ashore but his mortal years befell him and he crumbled to dust. Bran recounted his experiences to his countrymen, bade a final farewell to Ireland and was never to be seen again.

The Fayrie Spell: Some spells were believed to be used to call

the fairies up and some to dismiss them from places where

great treasure, help and advice could be found. There is such

a spell archived in the Bodleian Library (MS. Ashmole 1406)

MUE 110 Rústico

As indicated by the non-use of bar lines, the opening idea of

this piece is very much in a free style. The tambour should

be as dry as possible and by moving the fingers in a rapid

movement upon the belly of the guitar an echo effect can be

achieved by progressively moving the 'hammering' fingers

past the perimeter of the sound hole and around the bridge.

Overall the piece, as the name suggests, is rustic in nature so

the beat is strong and quite bold. Rústico is the Spanish/

Portuguese term for a man from the country. The rhythms of

the piece following the pensive introduction suggests a rustic

dance.

MUE 162 Lonely as a Cloud (Daffodils) by

William Wordsworth

A musical setting to this most famous of Wordsworth‘s poems. The music follows the various text extracts as follows; ―I wandered lonely as a cloud, that floats on high o‘er vales and hills‖ ―Ten thousand saw I at a glance, tossing their heads in sprightly dance‖. ―And then my heart with pleasure fills, and dances with the daffodils‖. MUE 163 Coniston Suite

On January 4th 1967 at approximately 320 mph, just four hundred metres before the end of the measured kilome-tre, Bluebird's nose lifted beyond a decisive angle and as she rose out of the water the boat took off, somersaulted, plunged nose-first into the lake and broke up as it cart wheeled across the surface. Sir Donald Campbell was killed instantly. The three movements are as follows: Bluebird This movement opens with the throb of the engines as the powerful motor pumps a dramatic pulse. The music gath-ers pace as Bluebird skims the water unbeknown of any hidden danger that causes the cataclysmic accident. The final moment depicts the craft and driver sinking to the bottom of the lake. Elegy There is a sense of tranquillity embodied into a lilting melody that is interwoven into this movement.

Reflections Time to reflect on the past achievements as the dappled sunshine too reflects upon the waters of Coniston
