Whether justly or unjustly the remark has been made that it would not seem like Guilford Col- lege if some one was not "mad. It is true that the statement is rather ambiguous, but if one is a close observer of existing condi- tions one will And that there is more truth in it than might ap- pear. Some one is forever "peev- ed" about something. In fact a large number of our students seem to wear their feelings on their coat sleeves and if by chance some one happens to touch them they immediately become grouchy and thus annoy not only them- selves but also every one with whom they come in contact. Then there is another class of people who, on account of the at- titude of the former persons, are continually afraid they will hurt some one's feelings. They refrain from acting naturally for fear their actions will not conform to the ideas and ideals of others. It has even been intimated that the GUILFORDIAX does not express the sentiment of the student body along the line of criticism, that the Board tries to suppress any- thing for a critical nature for fear some one would not approve of it. The Board absolutely denies sup- pressing any article submitted to it, with two exceptions. One of these because of its excessive length has not yet been published, due only to a lack of sufficient space; the other was a personal attack pure and simple, in a mood that was wholly antagonistic, not to call it by any stronger word, and such criticism in the opinion of the Board will injure a cause more than it can possibly benefit it. A third article, a very trivial matter, was lost b}' the printer. These are the only articles turned in which have not appeared in our columns. So if some one whis- pers to you that the GUILFORDIAX is not willing to be the organ of the student-body and to express in its columns the opinions of the student-body, brand that story as untrue. The most helpful sort of criti- cism is that which is constructive in its purpose. If there are abuses here, criticize them without fear, but also suggest some plausible remedy for the evil. Simply to attack a tiling does little good, but to draw attention to the trouble and point out a means of remedying it may soon result in a complete cure. Such criticisms and suggested changes are what the GTILFORDIAX wishes to en- courage and to such its columns are always open. Don't criticize simply for the sake of finding fault, dut do criti- cize with the idea of changing and remedying unsatisfactory condi- tions. Try it, and see how will- ingly and gladly the GUILFORDIAX will give space to your views. THE BIBLICAL SEMINAR. Meeting met in regular session last Monday night with a rather small attendance. The program for the evening was: A report by .1. R. Brown on "Society's Duty to Workingmen." He showed that the scope of the problem was wide enough to claim our earnest atten- tion and that some of the ele- ments of a social policy would be protection against accidents and diseases, the regulation of the la- bor conditions, protection of working women and children, the regulation of factory and work- shop conditions and the legal pro- tection of workmen's right to or- ganize. When all of this is done, they will have an opportunity, and these makers of a nation can engage in a higher life. The report was very interesting and was followed by a lively dis- cussion. Our next meeting is Feb. 22, and all members are invited to be present. SCIENCE CLUB The Joseph Moore Science (Mill) held its regular meeting on Wed- nesday evening Ihe 10th in the Physics Laboratory. It was an- nounced that Dr. ('has. 11. Herby, head of the department of chemis- try at the University of North Carolina, had accepted an invita- tion of the Science Club to speak on Saturday evening, March 2dth. His subject will l>e announced la- ter. Mr. Downing discussed the Pe- riodic system of the elements and showed Mayer's exj>eriment, illus- trating the configuration of the electrons in the atom. This ex- jKM-iment consists of magnetized needles thrust through small corks floating in a dish of water. When the dish is supported upon an upright solenoid through which a current flows the needles ar- range themselves in geometrical figures j>eriodic with the number of needles.
