The capital of both Europe and Alsace, Strasbourg is a young, dynamic and very accessible city.

Encircled by canals and the Ill River, the city centre, classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, contains the main locations and monuments that give Strasbourg its reputation: the Cathedral with its astronomical clock, the Maison Kammerzell, the Petite France and Covered Bridges districts, the former customs house, Palais Rohan, and more. Medieval half-timbered houses and Renaissance dwellings bear witness to a remarkable architectural heritage, standing alongside more recent extensions: the German Neustadt district, Art Nouveau architecture, the European Institutions district, and others. Among the not-to-be-missed museums of the city are the Alsatian Museum and the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art.

Although small, Alsace as a region has very diverse countryside: the plain bordered in the East by the Rhine, the foothills covered with vineyards full of famous grape varietals and the Vosges Mountains with its two regional nature parks. In summer, cool down in swimming pools and water parks, while in winter, the peaks are ideal for practicing Nordic or Alpine skiing on the runs at 12 different ski areas. Mountain-lovers will find plenty to do in Alsace, whether trekking in snowshoes or on foot in the Champ du Feu, exploring the Alpine slopes of the Massif du Hohneck or even admiring the magnificent Lac Blanc. With more than 12,000 km of hiking trails and 2,500 km of cycle routes and marked mountain bike trails, Alsace is the perfect destination whether you are looking for sport or a well-earned rest.

Page 17: The guide to your stay

Fed by numerous influences, Alsace kept the best to create traditions and a way of life filled with fervour.Let yourself be taken away by the charming Alsatian restaurants, brimming with conviviality and flavours, whether in a Michelin-starred restaurant, a country inn, or in the lively atmosphere of a winstub (wine lounge). On the menu, you’ll find iconic Alsatian dishes including the famous Flammekueche (tarte flambée). In Alsace, landscapes, gastronomy and traditions are intimately linked. For example, take a ride through the beautifully laid out Alsatian vineyards, where you can taste the AOC wines or take part in a traditional grape harvest festival. Marvel at the quaint villages in bloom, the half-timbered houses, the picturesque neighbourhoods of towns and villages, and the crafts of the artisans. In addition to Christmastime, many other highlights mark the lives of the inhabitants and the calendar of the tourist season. Folklore, with its costumes and dances, continues to be an integral part of local festivals, each one offering an occasion to discover the soul of Alsace.

DINNER IS SERVED!

As far as local cuisine goes, Alsace is a front-runner! The Michelin-starred restaurant stands alongside the tiny winstub, or the favourite bierstub, because in Alsace we produce (and consume) both wine and beer. It’s reason enough for the Stammtisch tradition, a lively group of regulars raising a glass to friendship around a table! Rich in the tastes of gastronomy and bistronomy, the Chefs of Alsace invite you to their inventive and varied restaurants. Together under the slogan “Cooking is a craft" they hold different labels including “Maître-Restaurateur”, and celebrate seasonal ingredients, favouring local products.www.chefs-alsace.frwww.maitresrestaurateurs.comThe "Etoiles d'Alsace" unite renowned establishments and propose youth and senior menus. www.etoiles-alsace.comFinally, country inns welcome hikers for a hearty repas marcaire (farm meal). www.fermeaubergealsace.fr.

The most iconic are tarte flambée, foie gras, matelote (fish stew), fried carp, sauerkraut, bäckeoffe (a farmhouse-type stew with potatoes and three different marinated meats), Alsatian pot-au-feu, Munster cheese, soft pretzels, kougelhopf, etc.Benefiting from abundant sunshine, the Alsace Wine Route weaves along the slopes of the lower Vosges. Enjoy a tasting of the Alsatian varietals during a visit to a winery and discover the vineyards along the trails of this wine-making region. www.vinsalsace.com - www.alsace-du-vin.com.For something different, visit the historical wine cellar of the Civil Hospices of Strasbourg (1395) which houses the oldest barrel of wine in the world, dating back to 1472.www.vins-des-hospices-de-strasbourg.frThe Alsace region produces more beer and hops than any other French region, with numerous industrial breweries and more than 20 artisan micro-breweries. In Wingersheim, the hops capital, a trail allows visitors to discover the farming of the plant.www.payszorn.com Other specialties: eau de vie, liqueur, fruit juices from our orchards, mineral waters, and more. Finally, chocolate is very present in Alsace and the region is first in France for its export.

Discover agricultureOver the plain to the south of Strasbourg, crops of cabbage for sauerkraut are spread in the fields; in the north, hop fields stand tall and the foothills are covered with vineyards of renowned grape varietals. Go and meet the farmers behind the local products of this patchwork landscape!

ECO-FRIENDLY ALSACE The agricultural sector has long been attentive to quality control through bold processes; Alsace is no stranger to the link between the land and "real food". Organic farming is also a reality today. Decreasing the inputs helps to preserve the ground water of the Rhine, one of the largest underground water reserves in Europe.Discover - Local markets, farm products,

THE HALF-TIMBE-RED HOUSE

There is a large variety of half-timbered houses in Alsace, depending on the area (plain or mountain) and the use of the building (farming, agriculture or wine-growing). The shapes of the interlacing beams had symbolic value: the diamond represented fertility, the saltire protection and multiplication (diamond and cross sometimes cross over), and slanting posts reflected the silhouette of man. Inscriptions of sun cycles, tulips and 5 or 6 pointed stars were believed to protect the house from lightning and other evils. Half-timbering and façades were enhanced with sculptures and painted patterns. www.asma.fr .

The steeply sloping roof (to prevent snow from collecting) was made of “Biberschwanz”, tiles in the shape of a beaver’s tail. Inside, only the main room, la Stube, was heated, along with the kitchen.

Traditional Alsatian costumes, festivals and traditionsALSATIAN COSTUMES AND EMBLEMS

Folklore, with its costumes and dances, remains an integral part of local festivals. Despite its uniform image, the Alsatian costume includes diverse variations. Different colours and shapes are codes that stand for factors such as location, the woman’s status, religion, and local wealth. A century ago, there were almost as many costumes as there were villages! Another symbol of Alsace is the stork that brings new-borns to their families in a tight bundle in its beak. As for the Alsatian dialect, it dates back to the first millennium! Listen to it live on www.olcalsace.org.

CARNIVAL

Some villages still hold traditional carnivals.Offwiller and Dieffenthal continue the tradition of throwing burning wooden discs (Schieweschlawe), a very old rite.

EASTER

At Easter, traditions first reflect the act of purification; houses are cleaned (Oschterputz), old wood is burnt, sins are confessed! The Easter lamb biscuit (Lämmele) is to represent the Resurrection. The Easter bunny (Oschterhas) and its eggs symbolize Spring and fertility.

ST JOHN’S FIRES

At the beginning of Summer, they are reminiscent of the Summer solstice celebrations and continue to crackle and set the Alsatian sky ablaze...

AUTUMN AND WINTER

After the crops and grapes are taken in, the harvest festivals begin. In years gone by, the beginning of winter saw the beginning of “veillées”. Several families would meet in the Stub, the only heated room, around the earthenware stove (Kachelofe). Time was spent doing various jobs while recounting old legends... Discover the wine and grape festivals at www.vinsalsace.com

CHRISTMAS FAIRYLAND

In Alsace, Christmas is actively prepared for and is based on several customs! Spread around the world, they are still practised today. The Christmas markets are distant cousins of the old fairs of Saint Martin and Saint Nicolas. The Christmas tree is an authentic Alsatian tradition. Its first written reference dates back to 1521 and the document can be found in the Humanist Library in Sélestat. Every Sunday a new candle is lit on the Advent crown, announcing the coming of the light. From the beginning of Advent, the famous Wihnachtsbredle are baked, small Christmas cakes with sweet scents and very old traditional shapes. There are plenty of traditions to discover, such as that of Hans Trapp, the Alsatian Père Fouettard (the helper of Saint Nicholas, who punishes bold children), or the Christkindel, a Christmas fairy who gave her name to the Christkindelsmärik, the Strasbourg Christmas market. But in December, Alsace sets the scene for concerts, exhibitions and other wonderful events which revive the original meaning of Christmas: the “Noëlies”. As of the end of September, the entire programme of the festival and the details of the markets and other “Christmas in Alsace” events can be found at http://noel.tourisme-alsace.com

In Alsace, budding historians can travel through time and relive the days of chivalrous knights whilst visiting the multiple fortified castles and hearing the legends of the men who built them. The countless churches, chapels and historic buildings, all richly ornate, reflect the development of both Romanesque art and Alsatian Gothicism.Let yourself be carried away with emotion and admiration at the memorial sites, museums and other spots of outstanding beauty. The historic centre of Strasbourg, capital of Europe with over 2,000 years’ worth of history, is a UNESCO World Heritage site, alongside the star-shaped fortifications imagined by Vauban in Neuf-Brisach and the Humanist Library in Sélestat.

RELIGIOUS HERITAGE

Alsace is a spiritual region. Romanesque art spans a long period and is characterised by several remarkable churches www.route-romane-alsace.fr.Boosted by urban development, Gothic art reached its pinnacle with the Strasbourg Cathedral. After the Thirty Years War, beautiful edifices were constructed in the Baroque style. In numerous villages, two churches reflect the two Catholic and Protestant communities. The density of rural synagogues demonstrates the size of the Jewish community. Today, Alsace remains the most multi-confessional region in France.

ALSACE, LAND OF ORGANS

Alsace has more than 1,200 historic organs. Most of these quality instruments are protected and restored, particularly those built by the Silbermann family in the 18th c. (St Thomas in Strasbourg, Bouxwiller, Gries, Soultz, etc.), the Stiehr-Mockers in the 19th c. (Roppenheim, Bischwiller, Barr, etc.), Callinet (Oltingue, Dannemarie), Legros (Ribeauvillé) and Aubertin (Thann). Moreover, the art of organ workmanship is preserved in Alsace with several master craftsmen still working, an Organ Centre at Marmoutier and a centre for learning organ workmanship in Eschau. The countless concerts involving organs demonstrate the vitality of this exceptional regional heritage.More information is available at:www.doa-alsace.org
