Happy Summer! As we begin a new fiscal year, we take some time to assess our programming costs, sign contracts, and make sure we are operating an efficient station that brings you the best possible programs. While we strive to keep costs level, we are also focusing on developing more local and regional content, including news coverage, local arts and music, and interviews with movers and shakers in our communities.
SPR is growing. Our audience is up 20% from five years ago, and new members are joining in record numbers, citing fact-based journalism and local coverage. SPR is now approaching 50% of members who are “sustaining.” We’ve just set up SPR’s Fund for the Future endowment with the Innovia Foundation, which will help secure the future of our service for generations to come.
Of course there is always more to be done. We must replace aging equipment, and we strive to keep pace with the costs of living and programming. A huge Thank You to our members, volunteers, board, staff—and everyone in our communities who help make public radio the great service that it is today. It is indeed YOUR public radio station and it is a great community treasure that you helped to create.

By Doug Nadvornick, program directorMy colleague Jim Tevenan is right in the middle of three exciting
new projects this summer. All of them debut at one time or other during the first week of July.
The one about which I’m most excited is Jim’s new half-hour weekly program, Northwest Arts Review. Jim will pull together some of the local arts segments that air throughout the week and bring them to new audiences in one program. During a typical show, you might hear an actor or director talk with Verne Windham about a play opening, a musician talk with Jim about an upcoming performance, and Dan Webster or Nathan Weinbender review a film. I like that we’re pairing Jim’s new show with my public affairs program, Inland Journal, for a high-quality, uniquely SPR block, airing Thursday from noon-1 pm on KPBX and Thursday from 3-4 pm on KSFC.
Jim will also bring back Vox Humana, Mondays from 7-8 pm on KPBX while Concert of the Week is on hiatus. Vox Humana brings us the best of regional choral singing. It will be followed at 8 pm by Center Stage from Wolf Trap, which brings us some of the best live performances by chamber musicians around the country.
Jim’s third project is a one-hour local classical music program...
More Local Programs Start in July
SPR Presents Yellow Submarine Aug 8Spokane Public Radio will host
an exclusive showing of Yellow Submarine on Wednesday, August 8 at the Bing Crosby Theatre. This special evening begins with a live taping of Movies 101 at 6:30pm before the film begins at 7:30pm.
Debuting in 1968, Yellow Submarine perfectly encapsulates the new art trends of the 60’s. The fantastical animated tale overflows with peace, love, and hope, packed to the brim with Beatles songs such as “All You Need is Love” and “When I’m Sixty-Four.” The songs and score have been remixed in 5.1 stereo surround sound at Abbey Road Studios, and the artwork was cleaned up carefully by hand, frame-by-frame. You won’t want to miss your chance to see it on the big screen!

...on KPBX on Monday-Thursday from 2-3 pm. In addition to Jim’s new music show, we will add WFMT’s Exploring Music from 3-4 pm Monday-Thursday and 11 am-noon on Friday. Each week, Bill McGlaughlin takes one theme and, over five days, looks at it from a variety of angles. Those two programs will replace Performance Today in our program schedule.
KSFC listeners will notice three changes. Inland Journal will move to 3 pm on Thursday, followed by the aforementioned Northwest Arts Review at 3:30. On Fridays at 3 pm, Inside Europe from Germany’s Radio Deutsche Welle will explore topical issues on the continent.
Saturday mornings at 7 we’ll add Climate One, a weekly one-hour discussion program which explores issues related to energy, the environment and the economy. The panels include some of the top people working in business, academia, government and non-governmental organizations. Climate One replaces Living on Earth.
We’re excited that these programs allow us to expand our local program service to you and, at the same time, help us control the costs we pay for acquired programs. Please tune in and let us know what you think of the new programs. Write us at [email protected] or call our listener line at 509-232-6904.
Established in 1959, the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra has been delighting millions of listeners nationwide with their radio series since 1971. This 13-part series celebrates the orchestra’s final season under the music direction of Edo de Waart. Tune in Wednesdays at 8 p.m.
Like an evening of pub trivia, Ask Me Another blends word games, puzzles, mind-benders, and unexpected guests for an hour of comedy, music, and obscure trivia. Play along at home or email [email protected] to become a contestant. KPBX Saturdays at 6 p.m. KSFC Saturdays at 9 a.m.
The Takeaway is a weekday news program featuring unique conversations with diverse voices, which invites listeners to join the discussion online and on-air. Hear it on KSFC Monday-Thursday at 11 a.m. and Fridays at 10 a.m.
Your Weekly Constitutional takes a deeper look at interesting and controversial issues in constitutional law in an accessible way everyone can understand. Tune in Tuesday nights at 10 p.m. on KSFC.

kHappy Summer! As we begin a new fiscal year, we take some time
to assess our programming costs, sign contracts, and make sure we are operating an efficient station that brings you the best possible programs.

My colleague Jim
Tevenan is right in the middle of three exciting
new projects this sum
mer. A
ll of them debut at one tim
e or other during the first w
eek of July. The one about w
hich I’m m

half-hour w
eekly program, N
orthwest A
rts Review
. Jim w
ill pull together some
of the local arts segments that air throughout the w
eek and bring them
to new audiences in one program
. During a typical show
, you m
ight hear an actor or director talk with Verne W
indham about a play
opening, a musician talk w
ith Jim about an upcom
ing performance,
and Dan W
ebster or Nathan W
einbender review a film
. I like that w
e’re pairing Jim’s new
show w
ith my public affairs program
, Inland Journal , for a high-quality, uniquely SPR
block, airing Thursday from
noon-1 pm on K
PBX and Thursday from
3-4 pm on K
SFC.
Jim w
ill also bring back Vox Hum
ana, Mondays from
7-8 pm on
KPBX
while C
oncert of the Week is on hiatus. Vox H
umana brings
us the best of regional choral singing. It will be follow
ed at 8 pm by
Center Stage from
Wolf Trap, w
hich brings us some of the best live
performances by cham
ber musicians around the country.
Jim’s third project is a one-hour local classical m
usic program...
