At Good Shepherd we have four netball teams.

The teams train on Thursday after school until

4:30 and have their games on Saturday.

Year 6’s netball team are called Lions.

Year 5 has two teams, the Panthers and Jag-

uars.

Year 4’s and 3’s are called Cubs.

For all of you who don’t know, a netball game

has 7 players on court at all times, Centre,

Wing Attack, Goal Attack, Goal Shooter, Wing

Defence, Goal Defence and Goal Keeper.

“Netball can be a pretty tough sport” says Eryn

who plays GS (goal shooter) and GA (goal at-

tack). “Because it’s a winter sport and even

when it rains we still need to play. But it’s still

fun!”

Interview with Emily

Emily has been playing netball at Good Shep-

herd for 3 years. Her main positions are WD,

GK and sometimes GD.

Why do you enjoy netball? It’s an activity you

do with all your friends. You get fit and it is

really fun.

What’s your favourite position? “GK, because

you get to run around and go in the goal cir-

cle.”

Why do you play netball? “To keep fit and to

have fun”.

Aboriginals believed that an an-

cestor spirit came down and made

the rocks, rivers, animals, plants

and all the wonderful people to

live and use the land.

At night time before they eat, the

women cook the meat and every

one performs a dance for the spir-

its.

They tell lots of dream time stories

to the children, it would mostly be

about ‘marrathal warkan’ (in the

Ngiyaampaa tribe) or marrathal

warkan which means long, long

time ago.

Aboriginal Cultures and Native

Plants

On the 16th of May, Good Shep-

herd School in Kelmscott had two

visitors named George and Ailsa

who sang and played the bongo

drum, didgeridoo, guitar and tap-

ping sticks. They also sang a song

called “Wanjoo” which means

welcome.

A student from Good Shepherd

said “I like the way they lived, I

like the taste of some of their

foods. Salt bush, kangaroo and

brake water cod.”

Cancer is a big problem around the

world. There are many people that

can die from cancer but some

types of cancer can be cured.

I have interviewed James William

(alias name) who was only 17

when he got Cancer. Luckily he

had a Cancer that could be cured.

This cancer was called Hodgkin’s

Lymphoma Cancer. He didn’t

know what his chance on living

was and he found it very terrifying

that even the healthiest people can

get cancer.

Joanne is a young mum who was

28 when she got breast cancer. She

had family history, meaning she is

more likely to get cancer. Because

of this she needed to have aggres-

sive treatment, to fight the cancer.

COURAGEOUS CANCER

SURVIVORS!

She needed chemotherapy and lots

of surgery. Jo’s biggest fear was

that she wouldn’t be there for her

children. However she is healthy

today.

With early detection and quick

treatment 80% of certain cancers

have a positive out come. Educa-

tion about cancer means more

lives are saved.

Are you looking for a new interest?

Something that’s a little bit differ-

ent than the rest? The sport (or in-

terest) you need is…. HORSE

RIDING!

Horse riding is a great sport for

people of all ages. There is also a

place called RDA, which gives les-

sons to people with disabilities.

There are plenty of things to do

that incorporate the different horse

riding disciplines and it is a fun

and social sport. The most well

known disciplines are:

Show jumping

Dressage

Cross Country

Hunter

Liberty Horsemanship (bareback,

tackless)

Having Horsey Fun

Western (which includes barrel rac-

ing, pole bending, western pleas-

ure, etc.)

Another great thing to do is event-

ing. Eventing is entering a compe-

tition doing one of the above disci-

plines (except liberty horseman-

ship) against people of many ages.

The best place for young people to

go to is pony club. At pony club

there is a rally day every month,

and fun days/mounted games/

shows/camps in between. At the

end of the year there is an awards

ceremony/ fun day.

Horse riding is not just riding

though. There is also theory such

as the parts of the horse, what to

feed a horse, how to groom, how to

tack up and much more.

Some local horse riding stables are:

Willow Creek Riding School

Foxwood Farm Equestrian Centre

Forge Farm

Oakford Equestrian

So have a go! Everybody will love

horse riding!

“Just to sit and feel the warmth

and peace on a horse can be re-

laxing and calming and a feel-

ing of wellbeing.”

The Australian Zoo is located in

the Australian state of Queen-

sland on the Sunshine Coast. The

Australian Zoo was established

under the name of Beerwah Rep-

tile Park by Bob Irwin in 1970.

Steve Irwin made the park a popu-

lar tourist attraction and changed

the name to The Australian Zoo.

Steven Irwin’s famous quote

“From the koalas, to the green sea

turtles, the Australian Zoo rescue.

It is dedicated to rescuing all wild-

life in need. The Australian Zoo

wildlife ensures each animal re-

ceives the best possible care they

can give them.”

On the 22 February 1962 Steve Ir-

win was born on his mother’s

birthday. He moved to Queensland

in 1970 where he attended Lands-

borough State school and Caloun-

dra State High School. The Aus-

tralian Zoo has its promise to keep

Steve Irwin’s dream alive. Irwin

died on September 4th, 2006.

10. Samsung Galaxy S4 – Sam-

sungs second latest phone is one

with a lot to love. Whether it’s a

powerful camera, a brilliant screen,

a long lasting battery or just a fluid

experience.

9. Moto G – Motorola’s back, and

it’s better than ever! It exceeds its

rivals in several key areas, from the

well defined 4.5-inch display to its

1.2GHz quad-core processor and

the early Android 4.4 Kit Kat up-

date.

Disadvantages – A main disadvan-

tage is it’s not so good camera, but

other than that, it’s quite good.

8. HTC One – With a sleek alumin-

ium body, a live home screen that

can stream all your favourite con-

tent, a photo gallery that comes to

life,

Top 10 Tremendous Smart-

phone’s 2014 and dual frontal speakers, HTC One

is ready to reshape your Smartphone

experience.

Disadvantages – HTC One, though

overall a good phone, it still has its

disadvantages. The HTC One.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t have a re-

movable battery. Another big draw-

back is that it has no memory card

slot.

7. iPhone 5s - The iPhone 5S is one

of the best phones to be launched in

the past year. Slick and fast, the

iPhone 5S has a smart aluminium

frame surrounding an excellent 4-

inch screen. It’s premium and solid,

yet an incredibly light, design. One

of its greatest features is its amazing

Touch ID. Another good thing about

the phone is its great all-round cam-

era. Disadvantages – The phone’s

battery life could have been better

and the 4 inch screen is too small for

some.

Its extra storage cost is also a

great drawback.

6. Sony Xperia Z1 Compact –

It’s built out of Sony’s excellent

smash proof glass front and back

and one-piece aluminium frame

— it mostly feels solid and well

constructed. The Z1 Compact is

entirely waterproof when you en-

sure that its covers are appropri-

ately sealed. In the same way as

the Galaxy S5, the Compact re-

minds you to seal it whenever

you unplug it’s USB charging ca-

ble or remove microSD storage.

Disadvantages – Because of the

sealed water proof cover, the

Compact unfortunately does not

offer a removable battery.

5. Google Nexus 5 – Comparing

it to the previous Nexii, the bat-

tery life has improved, the cam-

era is a little more stable,

Top 10 Tremendous Smart-

phone’s 2014 Continued

and the low cost is still in place.

The phone has also got a high

power CPU, quality screen and a

smooth rubberized outer shell.

Disadvantages - The Nexus 5’s

screen is dimmer than its competi-

tors and it’s camera struggles under

auto settings. Another major disad-

vantage, is that you cannot feed

your Nexus 5 with microSD.

4. LG G2 – It’s got an insanely

good screen, quality camera, really

good audio pumping out from its

speakers and headphone jack…..

the list goes on and on.

Disadvantages – A negative is that

for some getting used to the rear

buttons will be too much of an is-

sue, when you have had years of

side mounted buttons. When trying

to adjust the volume or zoom in cer-

tain apps using the controls will be

awkward for many. Its also got no

memory card slot.

3. Samsung Galaxy S5 - The

Galaxy S5 has a 5.1-inch 1080p

Super AMOLED screen, up 0.1

inches from last year. It uses a

2.5GHz quad-core Snapdragon

801 processor and has a 16-

megapixel camera with an all-

new Samsung-made sensor.

Disadvantages - We’re not in

love with the design, the new

heart rate sensor will be a bit

pointless for many and the fin-

gerprint scanner is fiddly.

2. Sony Xperia Z2 – The phone

has a battery that lasts for days,

an extremely good quality cam-

era, a screen that would make

you weep and all encased in a

dustproof and waterproof enclo-

sure you could take anywhere.

Disadvantages - Screen and cam-

era needed a fix as well as adding

in some other features.

Top 10 Tremendous Smart-

phone’s 2014 Continued

1. HTC One - The Snapdragon 801

processor has boosted battery dra-

matically compared to the 600 of

last year, and that means that photos

also process much more quickly as

well - even the front-facing camera

is much better. Gaming, movies,

photography, browsing - all work

really well.

Disadvantages – A big drawback is

that the phone is not water proof.

Another thing is that its only got

2GB of RAM.

Where’s Wally Now by Martin Handferd.

The aim is to find Wally in Ancient Rome, with Vikings, the end of

the crusades, medieval times, with the Aztecs, and in Japan. You

have to find Odlaw, Wizard White Beard, Wenda, Woof, and Wally.

You also have to find Wally’s hat, Woof’s bone, Wendy’s camera,

Wizard’s scroll and Ollves binoculars. Here Waldo is the title of the

first Waldo book released in 1987.
