The American peple aresick Washingtn pliticsand temprary xes thatdn't really x anything.

They want t see us take realactins with real slutinst the prblems we ace especially ur muntingdebt, Westmreland saidllwing the vte. overthe last ur years sincePresident obama tkce, ur debt has risenrm a little ver $10 trillint mre than $16 trillin.

That's a 60 percent increase, and it's nly getting wrse.Did yu knw that urcuntry brrws rughly$6 billin dllars every day?

    That's $239 millin everyhur, r $4 millin everyminute.

Nt all Gergia'selected cials ppsedthe American Tax RelieAct 2012, hwever.Senatr Saxby Chamblisswas amng thse whvted t apprve the bill, but unlike Westmreland,he had virtually n time merely three minutes treview the legislatin prirt casting his vte.

Westmreland remainedcritical, thugh, saying, Id nt believe we need traise incme tax rates tnd a successul appracht handling ur debt, and I wn't supprt thislegislatin that raises taxrates withut addressingthe real driver ur debt spending. Higher taxesare nt a real answert ur scal prblem inWashingtn.

Legislators had only hours, minutes to review tax relie bill

Frmed as part the Budget CntrlAct 2011, the Super-cmmittee, cmprised 12 cngressinal delegates, was tasked with preventing

a ptential deaultllwing the 2011 debt-ceiling crisis. Its primarygal was t negtiate $917millin in budget cutsver 10 years, t g alngwith $917 billin in cutsand debt limit increase $900 billin, as part theBudget Cntrl Act (BCA) 2011. While the BCAdid prevent deault at thattime, the Super-cmmitteewas ultimately unable tbring rward a bipartisanagreement.

The result was arequirement that electedcials aced a Dec. 31,2012, deadline t reslve

the budget issues r acesequestratin, in whichacrss-the-bard spendingcuts and mandatry taxincreases wuld be madebeginning Jan. 2, 2013.

The cngressmanunderstands the ptentialcnsequences sequestratin. With thatbeing said, he wasn't justging t swallw the pisnpill by signing legislatinsent ver by Demcrats, said WestmrelandCmmunicatins DirectrLeslie Shedd. It's ne thse things that when itcmes dwn t it, he wasrced t chse between

the lesser tw evils. He went n t say that he

had higher expectatinsr the prcess, particularlyr his ellw cnservativecngressmen.

one the things theHuse Representativeshad prmised t d is ntrun the Huse like theDemcrats had, Sheddsaid. That kick-the-can-dwn-the-rad mentalityis ne the things thatrustrates him the mst.

I d nt believe we needt raise incme tax rates tnd a successul appracht handling ur debt, and I wn't supprt this

    Althugh the passage the American

Taxpayer Relie Act 2012 temprarily preventedthe United States rmging ver the scal cli,sme elected cials arecncerned that ur natinremains under the threat sequestratin, which wuldresult in massive spendingcuts acrss the bard.Hwever, because delaysin taking actin prir tDecember 31, all Americanwrkers will experience atax increase tw percent.

The payrll tax hliday isn lnger there n earningsup t $110,000, said Grincertied public accuntantJsh Sprayberry, wh saidthe legislatin will result insignicant changes t theAmerican Tax Cde.

The payrll tax hliday, which was enacted by

President Gerge Bush, reduced the amuntwrkers pay int the ScialSecurity system by twpercentage pints. Withits expiratin, wrkers arence again paying the

cntinually r years iscming up with last minutedeals instead a lng-term slutin, Sprayberrysaid. Nw they've put atemprary bandage n aterminal wund.

He said previusmeasures were designed trce the hands electedcials by rcing themt address cmprehensivechanges that must be madet reduce debt.

I lk at it n sme levelsthat they did what theyhad t d because theydidn't deal with the issueearlier in the year, he said.It was suppse t lay theundatin r an verhaulvery similar t that 1986.

Even thugh theAmerican Taxpayer RelieAct did nt g nearly arenugh in addressingAmerica's ecnmic wes,

Sprayberry said withut it,the situatin r citizenswuld have been muchmre dire.

    The tax rate nwremains at 10, 15, 25 and 28percent, but i they hadn't

dne smething, it wuldhave gne up t 15, 28, 31,36 and 39 percent.

He said that althughlawmakers have ryears agreed that acmprehensive verhaul tthe tax cde is necessary, the current climate makes

that unlikely. Sprayberrysaid he is cncerned thatcials are mre likelyt cntinue t cus nshrt-term remedies ratherthan address the pressingdeeper issues.

I lk at it n sme levelsthat they did what they hadt because they didn't dealwith the issue earlier in theyear. Everybdy says weneed t d smething, butthat's nt ging t happen.By putting dealing withspending cuts r anthertw mnths, they've put usin a wrse debt prblem,he said. They've dug us adeeper hle.
