    St. Gregory the Great

    Mission Statement

St. Gregory the Great is a Catholic Church made up of people of many different ages, talents, and cultural backgrounds. We are an urban faith community with a small town feel of welcome and hospitality. Motivated by our baptismal calling, we accept our duty to embody the presence of Jesus Christ in the world and to take up the mission he entrusted to us by our word and example. We glorify God through support and service of our time, talent, and treasure to our church and to the larger community in which we live.

LITURGY OF THE WORD WITH CHILDREN The Liturgy of the Word with Children will continue this Fall during the 10:30 Mass. After the introductory rites, the children will process out and meet with catechists in the upper left-hand chapel for approximately twenty minutes, while the reading and homily are taking place. Then, guided back by the catechists and assisting parents, they will rejoin the congregation for the Eucharist and close of Mass. The purpose of the Liturgy of the Word will not be to take children out of Mass, but to give them a way to participate more deeply and with more understand-ing. The lessons will be conveyed in story form using Montessori-based methods and materials from the Godly Play program. Following the same simple format each week, we will: Highlight an aspect of the readings for each week; Focus on each liturgical season by preparing and celebrating; Wonder about and discuss the significance of the word; and Reflect and celebrate in song and response Who can participate? The lessons are designed primarily to engage 3 to 6 year old children. Children who are unaccompanied, must be potty trained and ready to listen to the scripture story. We request that children who are not potty trained, are on the younger side, or have the tendency to be rambunctious or loud, to remain in church. Children have an innate sense of the presence of God. The Liturgy of the Word with Children helps them to explore their faith through scripture stories, to gain religious language and to enhance their spiritual experience through wonder. Come join us! TAIZE PRAYER SERVICE On Sunday, Sept. 11, we will be hosting a Taizé Prayer service beginning at 4p.m. in Church. Taizé prayer involves simple chanting in the Taizé style, a Scripture reading, intercessory prayer, and an opportunity for silent prayer and reflection before an icon of Jesus, Mary or one of the saints. If you have never experienced this form of prayer before, please consider joining us.

SEMINARY SUNDAY SPECIAL COLLECTION NEXT WEEKEND Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, Last year, in speaking to a conference in Rome, Pope Francis reminded the participants that “the vocation to the priesthood is a gift that God gives to some for the good of all.” This weekend as we celebrate and pray for our own seminarians in the Archdiocese of Chicago, I ask you once again for your financial support of them. We currently have sixty-seven seminarians preparing for a life of service as your future pastors. Their motivation and enthusiasm for serving in the Church through a life-long commitment is inspiring to us all, promoting us to offer in return our prayers, fraternal encouragement and financial support. Many of you have personally told me how much you enjoy meeting our seminarians whenever they visit parishes and I know you come away from those experiences with a renewed sense of hope for the future. We in turn as a community need to stand with them during their years of preparation and for this reason I invite you to join with me in making this year’s seminarian collection a great success. Contributions made to this collection alleviate monthly expenses such as tuition and fees ($1,850), room and board ($950), formation programs ($250), and health insurance ($190) for each seminarian and will be used solely for the formation of new priests for the Archdiocese of Chicago. You may make a one-time donation no less than your weekly contribution to your parish, or establish a monthly contribution to the collection. Your gift, whatever the amount, will have a great impact on our seminarians, as they see first-hand your willingness to stand in solidarity with them. During the Renew My Church consultation, one of the top priorities identified was the need to promote vocations to the priesthood. We are doing everything possible in this regard, but I do need your support through prayer and donations to the seminarian collection. Thank you for your commitment to our seminarians. You can rely on me joining you in prayer for them as well as my remembrance of your needs as I thank God for your many gifts. Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend Blase J. Cupich Archbishop of Chicago

TO TEACH WHO CHRIST IS CAPITAL CAMPAIGN UPDATE Currently, $401,852 has been pledged to the To Teach Who Christ Is Capital Campaign. What this means for our parish is that if all pledges are paid in full, our parish will receive a rebate of $241,111. At this point, we have $188,717 in our TTWCI account at the Archdiocese of Chicago bank. My thanks to all who have paid their pledges in full. If you are able to complete your TTWCI pledge in full, we will have the funds we will need to replace the boilers in our Grammar/High School building and to begin to replenish the funds in our Parish Building and Maintenance Fund to cover the costs of future facilities repairs that I am sure will be coming our way. The new boilers have been ordered and will be installed at the beginning of October. The final cost of this project was $297,561.Thank you for your generosity to and support of the To Teach Who Christ Is Capital Campaign. If you have any questions about this, please do not hesitate to contact me. – Fr. Paul

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY In Today’s Gospel, Jesus tells us that the shepherd rejoices when he finds one lost sheep. The story tells us that nothing and no one is insignificant to God who is compassionate and loving to all.

WEDDING ANNIVERSARY BLESSING THIS WEEKEND This weekend there will be a special blessing after communion at each of our Masses for all couples who are celebrating a wedding anniversary during the months of September, October and November. As a parish community of faith, we offer our gratitude to you for your faithfulness to each other for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health. We ask that God guide you and watch over you, helping you to persevere in fidelity and love for the years ahead which we pray will be many more and blessed.

YEAR OF MERCY WEEKLY ACTION STEP In the bulletin every week from now until the Feast of Christ the King on Nov. 20, 2016, we will publish in the bulletin a weekly action step that will help you to live out in a very practical way what the Year of Mercy is all about. We ask that every day in the week that follows, you look for opportunities to put that action step into practice.

The action step for this week is: Dig out your most attractive stationery and hand-write an actual letter to some-one, as a means of demonstrating their importance to you.

International Chamber Artists opens 2016-17 “Collaboration in Concert” season with works

    reflecting on loss and remembrance

“Never Forgotten” program includes works by Bax, Bruch, Rachmaninoff, and Mahler

Sunday, September 11, at 3:00 p.m. at the Belden Stratford Hotel Sunday, September 18, at 4:00 at St. Gregory the Great Church

CHICAGO – The International Chamber Artists (ICA) announces the opening of its 2016-17 season on Sunday, September 11 at 3:00 p.m. at the Belden Stratford Hotel (2300 N. Lincoln Park W, Chicago). The theme of the season, “Collaboration in Concert,” celebrates ICA’s partnerships and joint performances with a range of leading Chicago-area artists and organizations. Join ICA at the season’s inaugural concert, which includes chamber works by Arnold Bax, Max Bruch, Rachmaninoff, and Mahler, led by Artistic Director Patrick Godon. The program will be repeated on Sunday, September 18 at 4:00 p.m. at St. Gregory the Great Church (5535 N. Paulina, Chicago). ICA’s first concert, entitled “Never Forgotten,” offers comfort, reflection, and healing through Arnold Bax’ Quintet for Oboe and Strings, featuring oboist Anna Velzo; the violin and piano version of Max Bruch’s In Memoriam, with violinist Sang Mee Lee; Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Trio Élégiaque No. 1 in G Minor; and the only surviving chamber work without voice by Gustav Mahler, his Piano Quartet in A Minor. Describing the opening concert and the season-long theme, ICA Artistic Director Patrick Godon said, “The date of our first concert created an important moment for us to remember the tragedy of September 11, provide healing and consolation, and pay homage through four musical elegies.” The theme of this year’s season – “Collaboration in Concert” – is a nod to the many joint projects that ICA will pursue in 2016-17. “Whether joining forces with The Tower Chorale, reimagining and presenting a concert with Quest Theatre Ensemble, or presenting a world premiere based on a visual artist’s observations, we were struck by how nearly all of our concerts this season involve collaborations in some form,” Godon said. “These are exciting joint projects, and we constantly look for new partners who share our interest in creating new artistic initiatives.” Following each ICA concert, audience members are invited to mingle and join the performers at a buffet dinner hosted by Ranalli’s of Andersonville (1512 W. Berwyn, Chicago; $15 including soft drinks and tip). Tickets for all ICA concerts are FREE ($15 donation recommended).
