Environmental sustainability is development that meets the needs of the present generation without compromising theability of future generations to meet their own needs.
World Commission on Environment and Development. Our Common Future. (1987)
Environmentalism isnt a cult, fad, or act of hysteria; it has been around since the mid 1800s and
the term has taken on different names and faces throughout its evolution. Every so many
decades we have had a reawakening of the movement which has catapulted us to this undeniable
dire state we are in today. But now the Green movement is here to stay because we are all going
green and the University of South Florida is leading the way.
The Green Team will report on efforts being made by the University of South Florida (USF) to
go green by recycling and being energy efficient. Our focus will include the efforts of USF,
Tampa and USFSP. The topics we have researched are: (1) How the University of South Floridais Going Green, (2) A Comparison of Other Green Schools to USF, (3) Creating Green
Awareness, (4) What is Ahead for the University of South Florida.
Our main sources have been the Websites of the University of South Florida, University of South

USF St. Petersburg Green Group Projects
The USFSP Green Group Projects include
the Earth Week Alternative Transportation
Challenge Pledge, the USFSP Recycling
Program, Green Cleaning, SEEDS
Technology, the Science & Technology
Building, and the Central Lawn Project.
The Earth Week Alternative Transportation
Challenge is for the week of April 19-25; the
purpose of this project is to challenge as
many USFSP employees and students as
possible to conserve energy by using an
alternative form of transportation for one
day, or trip. Ideas suggested on the USFSP
Green Group website for alternative forms
of transportation include the following: car
pool; walk; bus; sail; bicycle; skate. The
collective energy savings will be computed.
Members of the USFSP community can find
and take the pledge for this challenge at the
groups website.
The USFSP Recycling Program includes the
collection of paper, plastic, and aluminumby Recycling Management Solutions, Inc.,
which is a business responsible for
compiling considerable amounts of
recyclable goods from establishments, in
turn selling them, contributing a percentage

of the sales to charity. Seventy cans for
paper products as well as twenty to thirty for
plastic and aluminum are throughout USF
St. Petersburg; a drop-off location can also
be found near the Central Utility Plant foremployees and the public to unload
recyclable commodities.
The Green Cleaning Project includes the
modification of campus cleaning products as
well as lengthened recycling opportunities.
The all-purpose cleaner and the glass and
hard-surface cleaner used by custodial staff
have earned Green Seal approval, acertification available through Green Seal, a
non-profit organization. This accreditation
certifies that upon appraisal, testing, as well
as a plant visit, the cleaner has met the
Green Seal environmental standard for the
product category. As more floors at USFSP
are converted from carpet to hard surfaces,
two new floor strippers purchased by the
university will clean building floors using 70percent less water and chemicals previous
machines. The machines are also more
efficient, requiring the work of only one
person for four to six hours on a standard
floor stripping job as opposed to the work of
three people for eight hours with previous
machines.
Thanks to the Office of Operations and
Maintenance of Facilities, over ten small
recycling centers have been established
throughout the USFSP campus. These
centers each include the following threecontainers: plastic, paper and aluminum.
The main recycling center includes a
container for glass, and a container for
cardboard can be found behind the Coquina
Club. Upon request, USFSP employees can
even have cardboard or glass retrieved from
their office. The all-purpose cleaner and the
glass and hard-surface cleaner used by
custodial staff have earned Green Seal approval, a certification available through
Green Seal, a non-profit organization.
The SEEDS Technology Project involves
the newest energy technology, known as the
Sustainable Electrical Energy Delivery
System (SEEDS). Its ability to collect and
store renewable energy for later use could
help the environment and broaden energysources while actually decreasing the costs
to consumers. Due to the collaboration of
the University of South Florida, the City of
St. Petersburg, Progress Energy Florida, and
the Florida High-tech corridor, twin
installations were industrialized. The USF
St. Petersburg SEEDS site can be found on
the east side of the chiller plant.

USF Tampa Office of Sustainability
The mission of the USF Tampa Office of Sustainability is to coordinate and build partnerships
for university-wide initiatives that advance the University of South Floridas strategic goal of
creating a sustainable campus environment. USF Tampa began including sustainabilitypractices throughout the campus years ago, because it was the right thing to do. The Office of
Sustainability staff include the following: Christian Wells, Director; Nina Biermann, Assistant
Director; Susan MacDonald, Coordinator of Administrative Services; Ken Getty, Sustainability
Fellow; Melanie Coughlin, Sustainability Whitney Goodwin, Sustainability Fellow; Alejandro
Figueroa, Sustainability Fellow; Susana Alvarado, Sustainability Scholar; Karissa Gerhke,
Sustainability Scholar. The Office of Sustainability is advised by the Sustainability Initiative
Steering Committee; each member is chair of a subcommittee intended to address one of the
universitys ten strategic areas in sustainable development. Faculty Research Affiliates are also
part of the office, appointed to delve into comprehensive regional and worldwide sustainabilitymatters. Their expertise serves as an asset to the Office of Sustainability.
USF Tampa Office of Sustainability Programs
Four funded programs within the Office of Sustainability include the Sustainability Champions
Program, Sustainability Mentors Program, Sustainability Fellows Program, and Sustainability
Scholars Program. These programs are part of an effort to promote and impede the involvement
of faculty, staff, and students in sustainability efforts. The Sustainability Champions Program
recognizes two Champions each semester, who are devoted to helping USF go green. The
Sustainability Mentors Program acknowledges faculty and staff who mentor students in campus
sustainability activities. The Sustainability Fellows Program and Sustainability Scholars
Program are service-learning programs, giving students the chance to work with the Office of
Sustainability.
USF Tampas Incorporation of Going Green
USF Tampa has incorporated its initiative to go green throughout the university in the following
ways: research; teaching; service; events. Tampa faculty, centers, and committees have
accomplished an extensive list of going green research publications thus far. USF has integratedseveral undergraduate as well as graduate courses spanning across all college and academic
divisions into its curriculum. The USF Tampa campus, as well as the rest of the Tampa Bay
region, hosts many events regarding sustainability issues throughout the year. These include
presentations, lecture series, and conferences.

Interviewwith Kevin Cartmill
The following is an e-mail conversation on 14 March 2011 with Kevin Cartmill, the prime
member of the Green Group at USF St. Petersburg. Ann Butler conducted the interview due to a
lack of abundant information on the Green website. Kevin Cartmill
AB: When and why did USF St. Petersburg begin its efforts to Go Green?
KC: We started to go green 2006 first by changing custodial chemicals they
used and the way they cleaned. Our recycling program has been in effect for
some time but only included cardboard and paper, which cost the University to
dispose of monthly. In the spring of 2007 we started looking into ways to
recycling in a larger capacity and cost effective way. We began putting out 96
gal. Two Wheeled Totes for paper and Plastic/ Aluminum we installed a cardboard baler. Wepartnered up with a company to remove our recyclables at no charge with an added benefit of
20% of the profit received from this recycling to go to Ronald McDonald House in our name.
We started this as we seen the trend for the future and of things to come. We have since added
plastic, aluminum, batteries, light bulbs and electrical products.
AB: What are the steps that the USF St. Petersburg Green Group is taking in order to carry out
its mission?
KC: The first step that we took was to remove the control of the recycling program from the
students and put in under the Facilities Services Custodial Section. This was done with the
assistance of the Student Body. Then we started with the education of the Custodians, Students
and Facility with the basics of recycling and the use of green chemicals.
AB: What are some of the biggest challenges facing the green movement at USF St.
Petersburg?
KC: Educational knowledge is a big problem in the fact that people get misinformed on what is
recyclable or not. By trying to recycle objects that are not recyclable makes the bin become trash.
Some people do not wish to be put to the added step of recycling. Some people just do not care
and will throw trash in recycling bins just because it is closer than the trash can. This defeats the
purpose of the ones who do recycle; mixing trash with recyclables makes the whole bin become
trash.

Green Team/6
AB: What are some of the simple, green changes employed that have made a great difference at
USF St. Petersburg?
KC: USFSP has the support of the Student Government and Administration. Student
Government has awarded us help in the way of recycling bins and educational programs at the
dorm. This helps us to get the message out about the importance of recycling. With the recycling
program we, at USFSP, can see the benefits of recycling. We do not generate any more trash
with the increase of Students and Staff. We are recycling at approximately 42%. Our students are
being educated on the importance of recycling which will carry forth to future generations. It
also helps to keep our Campus healthy as well as beautiful.
AB: Has the USFSP Earth Week Alternative Transportation Challenge during the week of April
19-25 been in existence in the past? If so, how many pledges are usually made each year? If not,
how many pledges are expected or hoped for this year?
KC: Yes, it has, and several Staff has participated in car pooling and bicycling to and from
work. Each year the amount of pledges of participation grows a little larger.
AB: What are the Science & Technology Building and Central Lawn Projects, which are listed
on the Green Group website?
KC: Science & Technology Building and Central Lawn Projects were included as green
because when the building started it included any and all recyclable materials possible. The
Science Tech Building used recycled concrete pieces and recycled asphalt from the parking lot it
replaced. The Central Lawn Projects used low maintenance plants and recycled material as much
as possible. They are also maintained with green chemicals and techniques. We also
encouraged the use of native plants to both projects.
AB: How can a student or faculty member obtain information regarding joining the USFSP
Green Group and/or meeting dates and times?
KC: Student Life website contains this information I am told.
AB: What does the USFSP Green Group see for its future?
KC: We are looking to increase our recycling program and percentages, continuing our
education and keeping updated in procedures such as the Bio-degradable chemicals which is
becoming the new green standards. All this, while continuing the education of the Students,
and Staff, will improve our recycling program.

How are academic institutions meeting the challenge to become less wasteful, and more energy
efficient? We compared three colleges: University of South Florida (USF) St. Petersburg,University of South Florida Tampa, and Florida Atlantic University (FAU), Boca Raton, FL in
the categories of energy efficiency and recycling efforts primarily using The College
Sustainability Report Card website (www.greenreportcard.org).
Florida Atlantic University
Today, FAU is a college of 28,000 students on seven campuses.
FAU has a sustainability committee of four students, eight
administrators, eight faculty, and eight staff which has met nine
times since 2009. It received an overall grade of C+ and runsawareness campaigns throughout the campus on energy
conservation and recycling. FAU received a grade of C in their
efforts to save energy. Some of their energy saving projects have included temperature setbacks
to save on heating and cooling; electric metering, making energy consumption easier to read;
LED Lighting, which contain no mercury and turn on and off instantly; T5 and T8 lighting and
temperature control timers.
The school received a grade of B for recycling efforts. They reduce waste by using trayless
meals and recycle their cooking oil for biodiesel production. They audit food waste and their
reusable to-go containers are sold at discounted prices. The campus recycles all traditionalmaterials and electronics. They also have the Move It out Dont Throw It Out campaign.
FAU is requiring that all new construction and renovations meet LEED standards which
encourage a sustainable green environment. Recently during an annual environmental
competition, energy use was reduced by 5 to 10 percent.
New Innovations
The Mission Green Student Association has a new motto for this spring semester: Back to Home
Base. On land that they have recently received, they have created Pearl City Community Garden
where they grow fruits and vegetables to feed the low income. This semester they will hold
meetings every other week and had a fund raiser where they sold bowls made from recycled
vinyls for $5.00 and bracelets for $2.00 - $3.00. They will participate in Power Shift 2011 where
thousands of young people will reunite in Washington, DC for its third annual conference for
environmental and social justice. They will be holding an event encouraging students to bring in
standard light bulbs for exchange with more eco-friendlier lights. They are starting a free waste
recycling program in their residence halls called Terracycle which turns waste (such as candy

rappers, juice pouches, etc.) into affordable green products and an eco-product design contest.
They will be participating in a beach cleanup, Earth Day events, and Gulf Stream energy
harvesting research. The Mission Green Student Association also has a facebook group page.
They have started a composting program and are also working to reduce waste in the dining hall
University of South Florida, Tampa
The University of South Florida (USF), Tampa campus
received an overall B+ on the greenreportcard for 2011
green efforts. USF Tampa has over 47,000 students and
the sustainability office employs eight staff members.
The school received a B on its energy efforts. The
school has decreased energy use by using heat recovery
systems, a natural exchange of air between indoors and
outdoors; installed energy efficient lighting, audit individual energy use, have energy monitoring
displays on campus, generate renewable energy using solar panels and it purchases electricity
from renewable sources. All of USFs new building and several buildings which are under
construction are LEED certified and sunscreen solar controls have been established for some
windows.
The school also received a B on recycling efforts. Students receive a discount on refills if they
use reusable mugs. USF uses trayless dining saving the school 32,992 gallons of water per year.
USF recycles traditional materials, electronics, and used cooking oil.
New Innovations
The Office of Sustainability oversees four funded programs which encourage faculty, students
and staff to get involved in sustainability efforts: Sustainability Champions Program,
Sustainability Mentors Program, Sustainability Fellows Program, and the Sustainability Scholars
Program. There are also many student sustainability groups: Green Living Learning
Community, the USF Student Community Garden, the Student Environmental Association and
Emerging Green Builders.
USFs sustainability efforts earned the school a Gold rating by the Association for th e
Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE). The School hosts and co-hostsan extended list of events which are listed on its website.

University of South Florida, St. Petersburg
The University of South Florida, St. Petersburg (USFSP)
campus was not included in the Sustainability
Endowment Institutes report. The school is a waterfront
campus located on Bayboro Harbor in downtown St.
Petersburg on 46.5 acres. It serves approximately 4,600
students with half that number enrolled full-time. The
University started out in 1965 as an extension of
University of South Florida, Tampa; but in 2001, the St.
Petersburg campus began to operate as a fiscally
autonomous and separate budget entity from Tampa.
USFSP is still growing and emerging. It developed the Green Group, an institutional
organization of ten employees who meet once a semester to promote and create environmentally
friendly ideas for the campus.
They promote recycling with their convenient recycling centers around the campus for plastic,
paper and aluminum. These commodities are collected and processed by Recycling
Management Solutions, Inc. and a percentage of the profits go to Ronald McDonald House of
Tampa Bay. There is also an electronic recycling program for computers, and other electronic
equipment.
New Innovations
The new Sustainable Electrical Energy Delivery System (SEEDS), a cutting edge renewableenergy system, is a project partnership with the City of St. Petersburg, Progress Energy Florida,
and Florida High Tech to make energy more efficient. The schools 35,000 square feet Science
and Technology building was built just last year and is its first LEED building (certified for
environmental and energy design).
Dr. Joseph Dorsey, assistant professor of environmental policy and Coastal Environmental
Justice Community Ambassador, acts as a sustainability steward. In an interview with him, he
stated that sustainabilityis simply us living within our means (In-Person Interview, 23 March
2011) rather than stretching the environment as far as we think it will go. He stated that a
steward of the environment is someone who takes a personal accountability in their day to dayactions to change the environment. He feels that we are entering into a state of
dematerialization, where we will need to learn not to create waste, but to do more with fewer
sources than we are used to.

USF, St. Petersburg
As USF, St. Petersburg progresses towards a greener and more energy efficient campus, a
campus wide effort to move forward to a greener environment is required. In todays society,
people are thinking more green than they were several years ago. In the top environmentally
friendly schools, students play an important role in the success of the schools green programs.
Environmental sustainability is not only about the school campus but also making a difference in
the world. Our team believes that promoting awareness among students will help USF, St.
Petersburg to move forward in becoming a greener campus. We believe that students are not
aware of the various programs that are available on campus.
USF, Tampa
USF, Tampa has created a name for itself excelling in green project competitions.
USF, Tampa campus has also participated and excelled in different recycling
competitions. However in contrast to St. Petersburg, USF, Tampa has a very
active sustainability program focusing on the following areas.
Educating first year student about recycling on campus Recycling bins on campus, Recycling at Dining Halls Participating in recycling competitions
USF, Tampa promotes recycling awareness on campus by educating the first year students about
USF recycling and how they can help. During Welcome week, reading materials and recycle
items are distributed to new students. These recycle items are shopping bags and bottles.
USF, Tampa has distributed clearly marked recycling bins around campus. Having recycling bins
around campus, this helps to remind students about the importance of recycling. At USF Tampa,
there is a recycling center located on Sycamore Drive and it recycles plastic, glass, aluminum,
paper, cardboard and newspaper. This recycling center is not only open to the USF community,
but everyone who chooses to recycle.
USF dining hall has also joined the effort in participating in the promotion of recycling on
campus. USF Tampa has discontinued using food trays. Dining on campus is tray less, which
results in the conservation of energy and water consumption. Reusable cups are also available to

everyone purchasing discounted fountain beverages. Some restaurants are now using napkins
which are 100% recycled contents.
In addition, USF Tampa has a car pooling program called Zimride. It allows USF Tampa
students, faculty, and administration to commute together and split the cost by offering a ride.
Car pooling is more environmentally friendly and it reduces the carbon emissions and the needfor parking. USF Tampa offers reduced fees such as discounted parking passes and reserved
parking spaces for employees and students who car pools more than 4 times per week.
USF Tampa has also participated in a friendly waste management competition called
Reyclemania. Recyclemania was started back in 2001 as a friendly competition between Ohio
University and Miami University to promote recycling on campus. It runs for a ten week period.
During this period of time, each college or university collects and report waste data. Over the
years, the number of schools that participate has increased drastically. Below is bar chart taken
from the website recyclemaniacs.org, this chart shows the increasing number of schools who
participated in recyclemania from 2002 to 2009.
Ways that USF, St. Petersburg Can Promote Recycling on Campus
USF, St. Petersburgs efforts to become a greener university is the responsibility of everyone.
We all have to participate to make USFSP more environmentally friendly. The Green Team
believes that USF, St. Petersburg should be more drastic in promoting awareness to the current
students. It has been such an eye opening experience to our group that USF SP has a recyclingprogram on campus but only a few of the students knew that this program existed. Even though
the school currently has different awareness programs in place; there are other ways that USFSP
can promote recycling on campus.
USF, St. Petersburg can promote recycling by creating recycling competitions between the
different USF campuses or student groups. Competitions can be USF Tampa verses USF ST.

Petersburg. These events will not only promote the awareness of recycling but also educate
everyone on the benefits of recycling. Each USF campus will have to think of creative ways to
advertise this event around campus. Campuses can advertise this event with flyers, e-mails and
bulletins. This event can also be advertised in the Oracle, USF campus newspaper. These
recycling activities and competitions can be used to educate students.
Selling recyclable products is another step that the USF, St. Petersburg campus can take to
promote recycling. These days, recyclable bags have been prominent more than ever. They are
located in almost every grocery store these days. Therefore, this is a good to start selling these
recycle bags on campus at a reasonable price.
E-mail marketing is becoming more popular than traditional mail. Most internet users check his
or her e-mail daily. Therefore, e-mail blast is a good form of advertisement for USF, St.
Petersburg to promote recycling events. All USF students, faculty and administration have an e-
mail account. Therefore, an e-mail with the event location and details of the event may give great
results. USF, St. Petersburg will be celebrating Earth Week on April 19-25. We shouldnt haveto the web to find out what is going on at our school. This should be readily available in our e-
mail or even on the schools website.
Improving student awareness will play an important role in making the USF, St. Petersburg
campus a greener environment. Recycling is not the sole responsibility of a particular group,
everyone is responsible for his or her part. As students, we all can work together to make a
difference at USF, St. Petersburg and also in our communities.

Environmentaal sustainability is definedas, Development that meets the needs of
the present generation without
compromising the ability of future
generations to meet their own needs
(WCED 43). This couldnt be any less
true for The University of South Florida.
It is rapidly growing into one of the front
runners in sustainability and proving this
through the magnitude of projects thatare being undertaken by many professors
and students. It is not hard to miss the
excitement of the efforts that are
surrounding us as students or neighbors
in or around the community. There are
many projects that are in progress, some
of the upcoming projects include the
nations first School of Global
Sustainability, a USF Solar Power Plant,LEED certified building, carpooling
programs, and the new green bike
program.
The University of South Florida has
taken a huge leap in not only ensuring
that our campus is a greener one, but
also taking steps to offering degrees in
Global Sustainability. With many great
researchers and professors at their fingertips they will provide research on water,
clean and renewable energy, climate
change, coastal environments, human
health and sustainable cities in programs
which identify the global encounters to
creating global sustainability. Global
Sustainability is a rapidly growing field,
there are an expected 2.5 million jobs
that will be opening up with in the nextfew years. USFs new school of
sustainability courses differ in many ways
from the courses which are currently
offered. These classes are built and
designed to use online learning with up
and coming technology to cater a unique
educational experience to students of the
college. The two year process was a
lengthy one for the creation of theSchool of Global Sustainability the first
school of its kind. With a global focus in
mind, it will be taking on the local
challenges that face our community of
climate change, protection of threatened
natural resources and population growth,
these being some of the more important
topics.

These programs listed above are just a few of the up and coming sustainability projects being
implemented at The University of South Florida. Coming from a student it is very exciting to see
how much effort is being put in by my fellow students and professors. USF is on the right track to
becoming the best university headed towards sustainability, and it is definitely a proud thing to
say as a student as well as a neighbor in the community.

The University of South Florida is moving forward and becoming greener but there is muchmore that can be done in the areas of recycling and energy efficiency.
Due to a large quantity of accumulated waste during University of South Florida (USF) games, the school took part in a national 2010 EPA Game Day Challenge which en couraged reuse, reduce, and recycle of plastic bottles and cans from homecoming games. USF volunteersdonned bright green Go Green, Go Bulls t-shirts and collected recyclables from tailgaters andthose left in the stands after the game.
The Sierra Club partnered with the USF Office of Sustainability to establish this nationwidecompetition with other colleges and universities to design a waste reduction program which they
implemented at a home football game in October 2010. The winner was determined by howmuch waste was accumulated and recycled. Of 88 schools, University of South Florida wasnumber 74. This all proves we still have a long road ahead.
We need to bring more awareness and individual accountability to the green movement not juston campus, but to our communities, who look towards USF Tampa and St. Petersburg as leadersin the evolution.
