USDA Announces 2010 SNAP Hunger Champion Awards

Mascot Retirement

USDA Under Secretary for Food, Nutrition, and Consumer Services, Kevin Concannon, has announced the 2010 Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) Hunger Champion Award recipients. The awardees demonstrate exemplary service conducting outreach activities and assisting eligible clients to obtain nutrition benefits.

"Putting healthy food within reach for low income Americans has never been more important," said Concannon. "These local offices have gone the extra mile to reach out to and educate needy members of their communities about the nutrition benefits of SNAP and how to apply. Through innovative strategies and creative partnerships, these honorees serve as models for local offices across the country."

Two DES offices in Maricopa County received a Bronze Award: The office on East Southern in Phoenix, and the Gilbert office on W. Guadalupe. Both of these offices have been “adopted” by Nutrition Network Partners. Adoption includes providing materials and innovative nutrition education to the clients. The Maricopa County Department of Public Health has adopted the East Southern Office and the University of Arizona Bone Builders has adopted the Gilbert office. Also the Nutrition Network staff recruited Champion moms for their campaign spots from the East Southern office.

Congratulations to our very own Stephanie Hibbs who married her longtime love F. Chris Martinez in mid October. As you can see she was a beautiful bride! Her name is not official just yet so for now Stephanie Hibbs still works but she will be Stephanie Martinez on paper soon!

Another Wedding!

You may have noticed that Carlos Carrot and Rosy Apple are no longer available on the Mascot Order Form. They have recently reached the happy age of retirement, thank you for your years of service Carlos and Rosy!

Nutrition in the Know

Nuts, a Quick and Healthy Snack!

The end-of-year holidays are quickly approaching and nuts are always a great snack addition to family and friend gatherings. Nuts are full of nutrients that are good for you. The University of Nebraska Cooperative Extension in Lancaster County has come up with some interesting facts on how beneficial nuts are to good health.

Nuts are a higher-fat food. Most of this fat is heart-healthy unsaturated fat and may help lower low-density lipoproteins (LDL or "bad" cholesterol). As long as you watch your total calorie intake, eating a handful of nuts daily may help prevent weight gain and could possibly promote weight loss. The fat, protein and fiber found in nuts help you feel full longer, so you may eat less during the day (1).

Check the chart on the next page to find out how many nuts are in a handful and the nutrients they contain (1).
