HITS OF SHANKAR JAIKISHAN — Solomon the Wise, Asoka the Great—and Shankar Jaikishan the Hit-Makers !

This seems to be the most natural thing to say and most factual indeed.

If proof were needed, just tune into any listeners’ choice programme or a

Hit Parade and chances are that five out of every ten songs broadcast

therein will be Shankar Jaikishan composed. Never before the film world

has seen such an astoundingly successful combination of innovation, versati-

lity and prolixity as this brilliant duo displays in all its creations.

Apparently Shankar and Jaikishan have little in common except

perhaps their gentleness—and their sleek white Impalas. Shankar is staid

and meditative, Jaikishan mercurial and vibrating. Shankar's taste in clothes

is conservative while Jaikishan sports gay dresses. Both are, however,

handsome in their own way and exude a charm which puts others at ease

at once. And this, perhaps, is as it should be because the one acts as a

counterpoint to the other and the two together span a much wider spec-

trum of emotions and experience than would otherwise have been possible.

Their film career is closely interlinked with Raj Kapoor who is

amongst the foremost creative minds in the Indian films today. Some fifteen

years ago, Raj, a restless youngman brimming with ideas and plans, embarked

upon his first production destined to become one of the greatest hits under

the name of ‘‘Barsaat’’. Now, Raj has truly an unfailing eye for talent and so,

disregardful of the risk involved in doing so, signed up an unknown pair of

music makers in whose trial compositions his perceptive ear has discovered

great promise of genius, to provide music for it. These two youngmen, as

you have guessed, were Shankar and Jaikishan. As usual, Raj was right, for

all the songs became unquestioned hit-paraders overnight. From then on

their career has been a rising graph of glory and fame. Raj has had only

them to compose for every one of his productions and has not had the

slightest cause to regret his choice. His latest film, ‘‘Sangam”’, has touched

a new high in the popularity of its songs; the composers—of course

Shankar Jaikishan ! ) -

That is not to say that Shankar Jaikishan do not provide music for

other producers, for the fact is that they have become such a good bet for

composing hits that all ambitious film makers are in constant pursuit of them

to have them as their music directors. Right now, they have as many as twentyfive films for which they are to provide music. The marvel is that in

spite of this unusually tall order, nobody doubts that each of their composi-

tions will be different from the other. What versatile fecundity, that !

Apart from producing new trends in film music, they have also

founded what may be called the ‘duo system’ amongst music directors, as is

obvious from the increasing number of pairs in this field.

This record presents to the listeners some of the most popular

Shankar-Jaikishan compositions. Yes, only some, as it is impossible to present

more than a mere fraction of their repertoire within the confines of one

record. This selection is intended to encompass not only various styles in

which they have composed but also to span the whole length of time in

which they have been at the job.
