PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Selective High School applications The application process for selective high school placement in Year 7 in 2021 has been open from 9am on 8 October 2019 (last Tuesday of the holidays). There is only the online option available to apply, from this year there will be no more paper applications. Application information booklets will be distributed to all intending applicants, and promotional postcards with the website address will also be distributed as now, all applicants have to apply online. Just ask at the office for an information booklet about the process. It is certainly easier to apply online if you have internet access, your own email address and a printer but you only have to submit one application per student. A common reason for duplicates is that parents realise after submitting their applications that they have made an error and they complete another application for the same student. If you have made an error in your application, you can email the Unit at [email protected] to have any information corrected and then you do not need to complete a duplicate application. If you need to make alterations, please ring the Selective High School unit or see Mr. Lewis. The online application can be found using this link: https://education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/selective-high-schools-and-opportunity-classes/year-7 and more information can be found by using this link: https://education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/selective-high-schools-and-opportunity-classes/year-7 All students seeking placement in a selective high school will be required to sit the Selective High School Placement Test on Thursday 12 March 2019. Parents applying online will need to lodge their applications by Monday 11 November 2019.

Lateness Mostly, lateness is being put down to sleeping in or heavy traffic, but still that is no excuse for your child to be late to school. The school bell goes at 8.55am every morning and your children are expected to be here by that time. If they aren’t, they have to go to the office to get a late note. Too many late notes and you will be referred onto our Home School Liaison Officer, who will treat the matter very seriously.

In the end, all I want is for students to be at school on time so we can work our magic, the more minutes they attend, the more they are able to learn and experience. Do you child(ren) a favour, get them to school on time so they can learn and grow as much as they can.

Enrol now for Kindergarten 2020 Does your preschool child turn 5 years of age before 31 July 2020? Have you enrolled your child at Lidcombe Public School for next year? Now is the time to fill in your application. Please call into the office for an enrolment form as soon as convenient or arrange for one to be sent home with an older brother or sister.

Our 2019 Kindergarten Transition program has changed dramatically and this will be the fourth year of its implementation. We have begun our transition days in Term 4, running from 9.00am to 11.00am in the mornings. We still have 4 sessions left on the following days:-

Thursday 14 November 2019

Thursday 21 November 2019

Thursday 28 November 2019

Thursday 5 December 2019

There will be a number of great activities for your child and you as their parent that will not only strengthen your bond, but also familiarise and build confidence in your child about their classrooms, teachers and other students.

If you have already completed an Application for Enrolment form for your Kindergarten child you will automatically receive further details about these sessions as they become available. If you would like to read some general information about enrolling in a NSW public school please refer to the Department of Education and Training website link:- www.schools.nsw.edu.au/media/downloads/gotoschool/enrolment/detsef.pdf

Kindergarten students will start school on Wednesday 5 February 2020. Of course, parents and Kindergarten students will be called in before that for their Best Start Interview – times to be announced.

P&C Meeting The next P&C meeting will be held on Monday 11 June at 7pm in the staffroom. All welcome!

Presentation Day After trying to source a venue big enough to hold our whole school community (Westella Reception) we have decided to hold our Presentation Day in the same format as last year. Therefore, it will be held in two separate sessions: 3-6 Ceremony 9.15am – 11.45am K-2 Ceremony 12.45pm – 2.30pm Thursday 12 December 2019.

Pacifica Night Come and join in with the fun and festivities of Pacifica Night on Friday 22 November, between 4.30-6.00pm. It should be a fantastic night!

Thank you Just a quick thank you from me for ensuring your children came to school on Tuesday and Wednesday this week in the best uniform, looking handsome and beautiful. They were very well behaved during the process as it completely wrecks our normal routine, but all students responded well. Thanks also to my EALD team of teachers, Mr Duffy, Ms Ward and our student leaders for the effective work in running the sports photo day, and also to Mrs Rush for her liaison with the photo company (Master School Portraits) and the organisation of both days.

Platinum Awards Being Green suggests that your child is behaving very well and is doing what our teachers expect of them in the classroom and the playground. These awards have been running for over 3 years now. Our Week 3 recipients are:- Yousef Sadiq (3T), Haeun Kim (5B), Abdullah Kowaider (3A), Hannah Cho (3A) and Esther James (3M). Our Week 4 recipients are:- Spencer Soejanto (6H), Joan Jung (6A) and Kate Le (2C). Well done students!

**NEWS JUST IN…… At the NSWPSSA Athletics Championships at Olympic Park, Elizabeth Soliola, competing in the Senior Girls Discus event, made it into the final (final of 8 competitors) and finished 7th (in the state!) overall with a throw of 29.6 metres. Fabulous achievement Elizabeth. I am also told that Elizabeth, true leader that she is, was supporting the other competitors in the event and was being a great sportsperson. We are all so proud of you!!! More happening today with Elizabeth in Senior Girls Shot Put and Ethan Symes in Senior Boys Long Jump.

Also, you may be aware that year 6 student, Ashley Clavecillas, had entered into the MobileMuster competition. She went to the ceremony last night, and we believe that she has won the competition with another boy from Victoria, and therefore shares first prize. We will confirm this later with more details, but WOW, what an achievement. So proud of Ashley as well!!!

Great work ! Like I have said many times before, my favourite parts of the week are when students visit me with outstanding work. Today from 1A, Melody, Yumna and Catalena visited my office to show me their wonderful addition and multiplication skills. As you can see by the little whiteboards, they are great exponents of mathematical questions and they were just so excited to show and tell me all about it. Well done girls – I love to see such passion for education!

Newsletter All newsletters are emailed directions to our families. Electronic distribution is a much better method of communication with families as it allows the school community to enjoy great images of students in full colour without the environmental impact of substantial paper usage. We hope many of our families take up this option in the future. Thank you for taking up this option and saving just that little bit more of our environment.

Parking around the school Unfortunately, I must stress this particular point again. The car parking around the school is at an absolute premium, I get that, really I do. But that doesn’t excuse anyone out there being unsafe in their cars. Quite a few parents have been seen parking in our grounds or behaving in an unsafe manner outside the school, (mostly parents that know the rules !) , double parking, speeding, letting children out of the right hand side of the car, mainly down near Mills St East and Gillivers Lane – you are seriously compromising the safety of the students ! People have even been seen to let children out of the car whilst on the pedestrian crossing ! With parking rangers coming out just about everyday, that could actually end up being a very expensive mistake ! Please ensure you drop your child(ren) off outside the school in a safe manner or walk you children to and from school using the pedestrian access points, not through the car park. Other parents have now complained about our parents double parking in Doodson Ave and Mills St., or even parking over resident’s driveways. What is happening is extremely dangerous and stupid, with students getting out of cars from the wrong side of the car into oncoming traffic. Please do not double park to let your children out. It is against the law and I have no problem contacting the authorities and giving them your license plate number if you are doing the wrong thing out there. We now have a dedicated police officer appointed to oversee this situation, so if you are doing the wrong thing, you will be fined ! I would really appreciate your assistance in this matter.

Principal

Did you know???

For the safety of all students, toddlers, babies and adults, please do not bring dogs into the school grounds, even on leashes. Some children have a genuine fear and it can be quite distressing for them as well as for parents, particularly those with very young children. Thank you for your support in this matter.

Under the Companion Animals Act

1998 No 87 (14.1.e), dogs are

prohibited in school grounds,

(whether or not they are leashed

or otherwise controlled).

Leaving students unsupervised on school grounds has legal implications for both the school and parents.

Access to the school is only possible via the pedestrian gate near the sandpit (Mills Street) during school hours. All visitors must report to the school office. Unauthorised persons on school premises are considered to be trespassing and will be reported to the police.

Did you know that only 20% of Australian households recycle their plastic waste? Plastic can have damaging effects on our environment, especially because plastic is designed to last forever. To show our commitment towards reducing waste produced by our school, LPS will be having a ‘Waste Free Wednesday’ in Week 5. Students and teachers are encouraged to bring a ‘waste free’ lunch to school on the 13th of November.

Here is what a waste What isn't a waste free

free lunch can look like: lunch?

Let’s make a simple change which can have a BIG and positive impact to our environment. We should

also mention that the class with the least amount of people who produce waste in their lunchbox will be

rewarded with a pizza party!!

How great was it to see so many students and staff dressed up like farmers for our Drought Relief Fundraiser held last Monday. The sausage sizzle was a great success and thanks to your generosity we

raised just over $3,800!!! This money will be sent to Trundle to be used to help the struggling families

there.
