Easter is the peak of the year for Christians. Because of that, Christians have always spent time preparing for it. Christians set aside 40 days, modeled on Jesus’ time in the wilderness, in which they prayed, fasted, and gave to the poor; we call this season of days, Lent.

This time also became a time to prepare new believers to fully join the church. New Christians, called catechumens, could not receive the sacred mystery of Communion until they had been taught and trained. The final night of their training was the night before Easter. They would stay awake all night. At dawn, as the Easter sunrise began to light the sky, they would be baptized, and then put on white robes symbolizing new lives in Christ.

That’s how the Easter Vigil began. As we watch and wait for Easter sunrise, let’s put aside our old lives, renew our baptism vows, and go forward with clean hearts.

What Wondrous Love Is This American Folk Hymn Arranged by Joel Littlepage

Sing to Jesus Fernando Ortega

The Lighting of the Paschal Candle

Celebrant: Dear friends in Christ: On this most holy night, in which our Lord Jesus passed over from death to life, the Church invites her members, dispersed throughout the world, to gather in vigil and prayer. For this is the Passover of the Lord, in which, by hearing his Word and celebrating his Sacraments, we sharein his victory over death.

Celebrant: Let us pray.O God, through your Son you have bestowed upon your people the brightness of your light: Sanctify this new fire, and grant that in this Paschal feast we may so burn with heavenly desires, that with pure minds we may attain to the festival ofeverlasting light; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

(service begins at the back of the sanctuary)

Cantor: Rejoice now, heavenly hosts and choirs of angels, and let your trumpets shout Salvation for the victory of our mighty King.

Rejoice and sing now, all the round earth, bright with a glorious splendor, for darkness has been vanquished by our eternal King.

Rejoice and be glad now, Mother Church, and let your holy courts, in radiant light, resound with the praises of your people.

May Christ, the Morning Star who knows no setting, find it ever burning--he who gives his light to all creation, and who lives and reigns for ever and ever. Amen.

Reader: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Matthew.People: Glory to you Lord Christ.

Matthew 28:1-10

1 Now after the Sabbath, toward the dawn of the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the tomb. 2 And behold, there was a great earthquake, for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled back the stone and sat on it. 3 His appearance was like lightning, and his clothing white as snow. 4 And for fear of him the guards trembled and became like dead men. 5 But the angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. 6 He is not here, for he has risen, as he said. Come, see the place where he lay. 7 Then go quickly and tell his disciples that he has risen from the dead, and behold, he is going before you to Galilee; there you will see him. See, I have told you.” 8 So they departed quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy, and ran to tell his disciples. 9 And behold, Jesus met them and said, “Greetings!” And they came up and took hold of his feet and worshiped him. 10 Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid; go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee, and there they will see me.”

5 For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. 6 We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. 7 For one who has died has been set free from sin. 8 Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. 9 We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. 10 For the death he died he died to sin, once for all, but the life he lives he lives to God. 11 So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.

Jesus, Lover of My Soul

Verse 1Jesus, lover of my soul, Let me to Thy bosom fly, While the nearer waters roll, While the tempest still is high. Hide me, O my Savior, hide, ’Til life’s storm is past;Safe into the haven guide; Receive my soul at last.

Verse 2Other refuge have I none,I helpless, hang on Thee; Leave, oh leave me not alone, Support and comfort me.All my trust on Thee is stayed, All help from Thee I bring; Cover my defenseless head In the shadow of Thy wing.

Verse 3Thou, O Christ, are all I want, Here more than all I find;Raise the fallen, cheer the faint, Heal the sick, and lead the blind. Just and holy is Thy Name,I am all unrighteousness; False and full of sin I am;Thou art full of truth and grace.

Verse 4Plenteous grace with Thee is found, Grace to cover all my sin;Let the healing streams abound;Make and keep me pure within.Thou of life the fountain art,Let me take of Thee;Spring Thou up within my heart; For all eternity.

Celebrant: Let us pray. People: Almighty God, eternal Father, we have sat at your feet, learned from your word, and eaten from your table. We give you thanks and praise for accepting us into your family. Send us out with your blessing, to live and to witness for you in the power of your Spirit, through Jesus Christ the First Born from the dead. Amen.

Celebrant: All our problems of this life on earth... All: We send to the Cross of Christ. Celebrant: All the difficulties of our circumstances... All: We send to the Cross of Christ. Celebrant: All the devil’s works from his temporary power... All: We send to the Cross of Christ. Celebrant: All our hopes for wholeness and eternal life... All: We set on the risen Christ. Celebrant: Christ the Sun of Righteousness shine upon you and scatter the darkness from before your path, and the blessings of God Almighty, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always.
