  • Introduction

The Great Plague was London’s last major outbreak

of the plague, a bacterial infection caused by

    Yersinia pestis.

The outbreak began in the late winter or early

    spring of 1665.

By the time King Charles II fled the city in July, the

plague was killing about a thousand people a week.

  • The plague appears to London's walls in 1664. The

hot summer seems to have caused it to become an

    epidemic.

While 68,596 deaths were recorded in the city, the

true number was probably over 100,000, and other

parts of the country also suffered.

  • Types of Plague

Observers noticed two strains of the plague:

Bubonic plague, with painful buboes. This was

    spread by fleas on rats.

Most of these deaths were from bubonic plague, a

form of plague spread through fleas on small

mammals. In London, the major carriers were rats.

Pneumonic plague was airborne, and spread by

sneezing. People who caught pneumonic plague

    often died within a day.

  • Causes

This type of plague spread from a bite caused by a

black rat flea that carried the Yersinia pestis

    bacteria.

Worse still was pneumonic plague, which attacked

the lungs and spread to other people through

coughing and sneezing, and septicaemic plague,

which occurred when the bacteria entered the

    blood.

  • Measures taken by London

Closure of public places like theatres and dancing-

    houses.

Fires in the streets to purify the air.

The killing of cats and dogs, which were thought to

carry the plague. It was estimated that 40,000 dogs

    and 200,000 cats were killed.

Houses where someone got the plague were shut

up, and marked with a red cross. 'God have mercy

upon us' was written on the door.

Burial of the dead in mass graves.

Those employed in the collection of bodies

frequently smoked tobacco to avoid catching the

    plague.

  • People of London fired their own houses in the

belief that Plague can be stopped by fire. This

created a havoc condition in London and that turn

    into The Great Fire.

But later it was found that the fire has no effect

    over Plague.

It was totally a misconception among the peoples.

  • Consequences

    Consequences of the disease

Perhaps 100,000 Londoners died of the plague in

1665. One historian has suggested that as many as

three-quarters of a million people died nationwide,

and that many more became ill and recovered.

  • vaccination

    Plague vaccine was

also invented in the late 19th

    Century. Between 1890 and 1950,

    bacterial vaccine development

    proliferated, including the Bacillis-

    Calmette-Guerin

(BCG) vaccination, which is still in

    use today.

    • The idea to develop vaccine against plague started by Alexandre Yersin in 1895 who investigated immunity against Y.
