By Marla R. Miller | CTW Features A strong current of fresh, bright colors in new products and furnishings is headed for the home, strengthened by warmer summer temperatures and a sense of renewed consumer confidence.
Starting with the walls, deco-rating is moving away from white-on-white to varying shades of gray with bold accent colors.
“In a sense, there’s a renewed confidence that people are expe-riencing. They are feeling better,” says interior designer and color stylist Mark Woodman, immedi-ate past president of the Color Marketing Group, an interna-tional color-forecasting organi-zation based in Alexandria, Va.
“When you’re a little more comfortable with where you are, you allow yourself a little more experimentation.”
It’s common for seasonal changes to influence color trends. Bright colors radiate joy and help release anxiety, but they can also be a little scary because they have a lot of ener-gy, Woodman says.
“We want to embrace the brightness of nature,” he says. “There’s more sun, more light. You’re outdoors more, everything is blooming. The time of the year sort of drives that.”
The soothing colors found in nature have made their way to Barclay Butera’s interiors. The California designer’s first collection for Highland House includes an ocean’s worth of blues and greens.
“They are fresh, clean and very serene,” he says. “I think the colors, whether they are explosive brights or calming, washy shades, are so uplifting and create environments that are welcoming and inviting.”
As people consider color, designer Maria Killam recommends saving bright paint for smaller spaces, such as guest rooms or a bath-room, and using no more than three colors in any room.
“Wall color should pull your space togeth-
er,” says Killam, a Canadian blogger, decora-tor, and color expert. “The way to incorporate color is through upholstery and drapery. In main spaces, it makes sense to keep colors pale, with light grays on the wall as a nice, light backdrop.”
To choose colors, Butera suggests examin-ing your basic look and tastes. Are you sleek and modern? Traditional?
“Your instincts will guide you to the best fabrics and textiles for upholstery, pillows, rugs,” he says. “Pillows are a fabulous way to infuse color into your home.”
Also a big fan of pillows, Killam says other easy accents include colorful gourd lamps, house plants, even a vase of fake flowers or a bowl of fake fruit. Toss the artificials if they get dusty, she says.
“Wow, won’t that make you happy every time you walk in the room?” she says. “We spend too much time in our home for it not to be something that makes us happy when we

walk in the door. It’s so easy to bring it in with lighting, flowers.”
For those who are hesitant to make the plunge into a new palette, begin with baby steps, Woodman says. Add a bright area rug or throw that accents your main color scheme, or buy bold towels for the kitchen and bath.
Try a new hue in a room where you don’t spend much time, he suggests. “Paint the inside of your closet. Bring in fun color in the kitchen with countertop appliances, even some of the tools,” says Woodman. “Add
a little color joy while you’re slicing your bread.”
Neutral color schemes remain popular, but it is time for the pendulum to shift, Kil-lam says.
“Gray provides a crisp backdrop, whereas beige looks dirty,” she says. “It’s too earthy to go with bright colors.”
Gray, which has surged in popularity, started out as an industrial color, Woodman says. It works well in the home as a balanc-ing color, since it’s the middle ground between black and white.
View a color that interests you against a neutral gray, Woodman says. “Grays offer a great range that plays well with lots of other colors,” he says. Slightly warmer “mushroom grays,” or gray-browns, are popular now.
Typically sophisticated and modern, grays provide a great foundation for people who want to add bright accents in green, yellow or orange.
In the kitchen, “a softened gray surface with a lemon yellow blender on top with the stainless steel, you get this really interesting color palette, everything looks new and clean,” he says.
New appliances also get the gray treat-ment, going beyond stainless to include metallic shades such as dark platinum.
Less expensive ways to add color punch to a neutral kitchen include a custom sink, fau-cet, backsplash, lighting or accessories.
“Gadgets, towels and textiles in the kitch-en are a fun way to give your kitchen a mini-renovation, especially when it comes to seasons,” says Beth Robinson, senior manager of brand experience for Kitche-nAid.
This spring, KitchenAid added three new colors to its stand mixers: sea glass, bor-deaux, a deep red, and lavender, a pale, ice cream color.
Selecting a color for the kitchen “is very personal,” Robinson says. “It’s a sense of your own personal style and creativity, a statement of yourself in their kitchen.”

H omeowners have their minds set on backyard relaxation this summer. But first, many of them have a to-do list.
More than two-thirds (68 percent) of respon-dents in a recent poll of remodelers said they plan outdoor home improvement projects this season, according to a poll of 2,023 adults by Zillow, the Seattle online real estate marketplace. In last year’s poll, just 40 percent had ambitions for an outdoor living reno.
Top features they dream about: outdoor living rooms with accessories in muted colors, uphol-stered couches and wood arbors.
The Zillow Home Design Trend Report sur-veyed a group of design experts from across the country and reviewed the most popular outdoor photos shared on Zillow Digs, where site visitors post images of home improvement and design inspiration.
The median budget for a summer remodel was $1,000. Many homeowners said they are considering more extensive outdoor remodels such as open-air living rooms to expand useable square footage for year-round use, adding value to their home.
The top three trends:
MUTED COLORSSoft, muted hues are the most popular colors
for open-air living rooms, polled homeowners and designers said.
“Subtly, not saturation,” rules when it comes
to choosing colors for outdoor living this season, says Marc Thee, Marc-Michaels Interior Design, Winter Park, Florida. Homeowners have “dialed back” more vibrant accent colors popular last year and instead are choosing paler shades. Think sea glass, rather than turquoise; greyed shrimp rather than watermelon; and “beautiful sherbet” rather than bright orange, Thee says.
UPHOLSTERED COUCHESDesigners identified fully upholstered couches as a growing open-air living room trend. Homeowners want to invest in “comfortable seating and lounging pieces for a real indoor/outdoor feel,” says Mara Miller of Carrier and Company, New York, N.Y. Other typically interior accessories such as rugs, lamps and wood coffee tables are among the accessories that site visitors admire.
WOOD ARBORSWood arbors are a popular feature among
homeowners who say they are looking to create a clearly defined outdoor space that functions as a second living room.
