THE GREAT MONSTER COLLECT: ICE QUEEN
By David Lang
There was no doubt Jimmeena was the Ice Queen. That
was certain. The question was, why was she going to school?
And why didn’t she like it when people called her “Your
Majesty,” or, “Royal Queen of the Glacier,” or, “Ah!
Forgive my insolence!?” And why did she wear that scarf in
the middle of spring? Okay, not everyone wanted to know
that last one, but you can understand why people were
confused.
“It’s part of her social experiment adventure
journey,” Quesley heard his Mother say as he woke up out of
bed. “She wants to know what it’s like to be normal; to
study the culture of us normal humans. It’s her mission.
She has no choice. That’s why she wants to do it.
Curiosity. One day she woke up and decided it would be fun
to live like a human for a change.”
Quesley brushed his teeth like the good little boy he
was and then went to the kitchen for breakfast. Now his
teeth would get all dirty again! Today was an off day for
Quesley’s class, so he sat down and took his time eating a
healthy cereal.
“Personally, I think it’s a publicity stunt,” Mother
said to the spatula.

“Good morning,” said Quesley as he ate. “Mother, why
do you speak to the spatula?”
“Because I miss speaking with your father, dear,” said
Mother. “But do not worry your eleven-year-old head. Your
father will come back to our house. He’s just had a
breakthrough on his case. He thinks he may finally be able
to prove that Zombieville is housing illegal monster
oddities.”
“You’d think the name ‘Zombieville’ would be a
giveaway,” added Quesley.
“Yes yes, but we don’t speak of that now; we might
give something away to listening ears. We shall speak of
the Ice Queen.”
“Bronze really seems to like her,” said Quesley. His
mother sighed.
“Poor Bronze,” she said. “Seventeen years old and yet,
he…it’s like he’s always in third place.”
“Third place isn’t so bad,” said Quesley. “It means
you had fun and got to win something.”
“Yes, yes,” said Mother. “But telling Her Majesty…I
mean, Jimmeena how he feels…it’s a big task, and the fact
that she’s a Queen doesn’t help.”
“But if he tells her, she’ll feel more like a normal
girl, which is what she wants-”

There was a stepping noise. Bronze had come down the
stairs, ready for school, but he looked tired.
“I’m going to school,” he said.
“Without breakfast?”
“There’s breakfast at school.”
“Don’t forget to tell her how you feel!”
Bronze stomped his foot.
“I don’t feel!” he said, and stormed out the door. “I
don’t have feelings for her!” his voice echoed from outside.
“…not that I would know about such matters, I am a boy
afterall,” said Quesley.
“Indeed, but a smart boy,” said Mother.
Quesley was done his cereal, so he went and watched
TV. When the cartoons were plenty over enough, he asked if
he could go outside.
“Mother, may I go outside and play?” he asked.
“Okay,” said Mother. “But bring Sandra with you.”
“I will, Mother Dear,” said Quesley like the good
little boy he was. But what one must know is that when
Quesley goes outside to play, it is not the same as it is
when you or I go out to play.
Bronze had made it to school that day. It was a great
day, but Bronze wasn’t great in his head. Nevertheless, he
7/30/2019 The Great Monster Collect: Ice Queen

decided to try to just be happy at school. Walking through
the mechanical door to his otherwise primitive (yet white
with painted red lines) classroom, he tried to get to his
desk.
“Bronze!” said a bright eyed boy about Bronze’s age.
“Bronze you are here I’m so glad!”
“I’m not in the mood for a high-five now, Snazzy,”
said Bronze. “I am not in a good mood because my mother
thinks I am in love with the Ice Queen.”
“Jimmeena,” said Snazzy, shifting his eyes. “She would
not want to hear that if she were her. Why can’t you say
her name?”
“I get nervous around royalty,” said Bronze as they
sat.
“What if, and I’m not saying you are…what if you get
nervous around the girl that you like?” Snazzy theorized.
“Am I?” thought Bronze aloud, suddenly not sure of
himself. “If I am I would not like to go about announcing
it. But I don’t know…”
“Dude, you so totally do like her!” said Snazzy. “You
always freeze up around her!”
“She is the Ice Queen.”
“That’s not what I meant.”

But the conversation was cut short as the door to the
classroom burst open and everything became darker…and more
blue. Icey gas like from dry ice flowed in through the
door, like sparkling ice gas. Her majesty had made her
entrance.
If only she realized that normal teenagers did not
enter rooms that way, but she had forgotten. Realizing her
mistake, she canceled all the ice and stepped into the
classroom apologizing.
“Forgive me! Jimmeena is a little off today!” she
smiled. “Hello, my fellow, normal classmates!”
“Do come in,” said the short guy at the desk. And come
in she did. Everyone tried not to pay attention as her
light blue skin reverted to its normal, human color. But
her hair stayed slightly darker blue; she couldn’t change
that. Looking otherwise like a normal seventeen year old
girl, but walking very much like royalty, she searched out
her seat.
“I think it’s over there, Your Majesty,” said a frizzy
haired girl. Jimmeena got nervous.
“Well, I, um…”
“That’s enough, Frizzy,” said the short man.
“Sorry,” said Frizzy, in a tired way that made it hard
to tell if she meant it or not.
7/30/2019 The Great Monster Collect: Ice Queen
http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/the-great-monster-collect-ice-queen 6/37
“Find a seat, Jimmeena,” said the short man.
“Thank you,” Jimmeena bowed. She then took a small,
greenish grey fork from her bag and pointed it.
“Just like mine…” Bronze thought to himself. “Is
Snazzy correct?”
Using the fork, Jimmeena was able to direct herself to
an empty seat, just two seats away from Bronze. This made
Bronze get more nervous.
“No…is it…it can’t be!” he thought.
“Alright then, class,” said the short man. “Is
everybody here?”
“Yes,” all the students answered in unison.
“Are we ready to begin?”
“Yes.”
“Okay. Here we go…”
And with that, the lights dimmed, and the short man
slowly began to sink into the ground, under the floor
tiles. Then, a spotlight appeared behind the desk, and the
ceiling tile above broke off. A taller man jumped down on a
rope, stood up straight after landing, and faced the class.
“Good morning, class!” he said.
The lights returned to normal.
“Good morning,” the class responded.
The short man wasn’t really the teacher.

“Alright then,” said Quesley. “I guess I’m going
monster collecting.” Quesley was exited; monster collecting
was his favorite activity. Even if he didn’t want to find
the Cascade Stone, he would still want to go monster
collecting. Quesley walked into the garage and began
searching. There was more than one door to the garage, and
a girl about Quesley’s age walked in.
“Hello, Quesley! Are you going monster collecting
again?”
“Oh, hi Renell,” said Quesley. “I am going monster
collecting. Do you want to join me?”
“Okay!” Renell smiled.
Renell was Quesley’s best friend. They went to the
same class, so that’s why she wasn’t in school.
“But we are also searching for the nearest Cascade
Stone,” said Quesley, as they searched a cabinet.
“What if it’s far?” asked Renell, as they looked under
the coffee table.
“My mother packed lunch, so we have until dinner,”
said Quesley, as they walked out the backdoor and emerged
from a tree into a forest. “Alright, what tree do we try?”
“According to my sensors, the right tree is within ten
yards, but you will have to ask which tree is correct,”
7/30/2019 The Great Monster Collect: Ice Queen
http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/the-great-monster-collect-ice-queen 9/37
Sandra said as animatedly as always. “With Sandra, it’s
always personal!”
“We’ll try the Riverland tree,” said Quesley, walking
towards one of the trees. Quesley and Renell walked through
the tree, which wasn’t really a normal tree at all; it was
a portal tree! They emerged in another forest, but this one
was much wider, with the trees farther apart, and there was
more sunshine. There was a river in the distance.
“There are cabins nearby,” said Renell. “Perhaps we
can ask about the stone there!”
“Okay, let’s go!” said Quesley, and the two skipped
towards the river. They came to a bridge and crossed it.
But after walking a little more, they heard rustling behind
a tree.
“Be careful, children,” Sandra said. “There’s a
monster nearby!”
Quesley and Renell stood there ground, ready to face
whatever was behind the tree. Soon, it emerged. It was
somewhere between the height of a child and an adult. It
had two legs, two arms, and was covered in brown fur. It
also had a darker, blue-ish hood, mouth mask and a short
cape. There was a great deal of fur, and the only
noticeable facial parts amidst the clashing fur and clothes
7/30/2019 The Great Monster Collect: Ice Queen
http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/the-great-monster-collect-ice-queen 10/37
were two, large, bright blue eyes (so bright they might
have glowed in the dark).
“Rah!” said the monster, bearing its long, thick, dark
blue claws. “Rah!”
“It’s a moguuna!” said Quesley.
“Can Sandra scan it?” asked Renell.
“Sorry children, but I’m not allowed to scan any
monster until you’ve captured it! With Sandra, it’s always
personal!”
The moguuna was advancing.
“Rah!” it said again (it didn’t roar; it just said
“Rah!”)
“Well I am a monster collector after all, so I’ll use
a monster!” said Quesley. “We’ll need Blocky for this!”
Saying this, Quesley took a wide, metal disc with a
closed, mechanical compartment from his back pack. Jumping
back, he threw it at the ground. It opened up, and glowing,
blue green lights emitted from the disc. Moments later, it
stopped. Quesley sighed.
“Good thinking,” said Renell. “I could tell it was
really weighing you down. I can throw it away while you
keep the monster busy.”
“Thanks,” said Quesley. “And now to bring out Blocky!”
7/30/2019 The Great Monster Collect: Ice Queen
http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/the-great-monster-collect-ice-queen 11/37
Quesley raised his Computer. Pop! Blocky was there in
an instant. Blocky was about almost three feet tall. He was
made of grey, square rocks, with the exception of the
torso, which was bigger and slightly brownish. He wore a
red headband and had two big eyes.
“Blockytheresamonsterafterusgetit!!” Renell said,
panicking.
“Don’t worry, I got this!” he said, stepping forward
and getting into a fighting stance. The moguuna stopped its
advance.
“A purebred,” he said. “You must belong to that boy.”
“I am loyal to the humans,” said Blocky. “You should
not harm them, and that is why I will stop you!”
“A purebred can’t stop me!”
“You underestimate me; Quesley here started out with
me, and that means I’m more experienced!”
“Experience THIS!” roared the monster, and running up
to Blocky, he gave him one, hard, swift kick. “Ouch!” he
said, grabbing his foot.
“Are you okay?” said Blocky.
“Well…I…I don’t know, I…I think I got a bruise…”
“Oh, here, let me see!” said Blocky, as the moguuna
sat down and showed Blocky his foot. “I don’t think it’s
7/30/2019 The Great Monster Collect: Ice Queen
http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/the-great-monster-collect-ice-queen 12/37
bruised. You should be okay. But you shouldn’t kick me; I’m
made of rocks.”
“I’m sorry, I won’t do it again!” cried the moguuna,
standing up.
“Are you gonna be okay?”
“Y…yeah.”
“Okay.”
At that, the two resumed their fighting stances.
“I may not be able to attack you with my kicking
feet,” said the moguuna. “But now…now you shall undergo the
horror that is my thunder claw!”
Saying this, he raised his left claw. Blue energy
emitted from it. Everyone was nearly forced back at the
loud noise that emitted from the mogunna’s claw. The loud
boom was frightening. For its moment of duration, it
drowned out whatever small noised had come from the
surrounding nature. It was a loud boom. Renell covered her
face, shivering.
“It’s okay,” said Blocky. “It can’t hurt you, it…
imagine a really big drum!”
Quesley patted Renell on the shoulder, though he
himself was a little shaken too. The Moguuna smirked.
“If you thought that was scary,” it said. “Wait until
you see my lighting claw!”
7/30/2019 The Great Monster Collect: Ice Queen
http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/the-great-monster-collect-ice-queen 13/37
Saying this, he raised his right claw, and blue sparks
of electricity emitted out. The children backed up. The
electricity went everywhere until it hit Blocky, but Blocky
just stood his ground.
“Why didn’t that work?” the monster growled.
“I am a martial artist,” said Blocky. “I have trained
myself to ignore such feelings of sparks and surges. My own
energy burns it out with my focus!”
“Really?”
“Nah. I’m just kidding. That also didn’t work because
I’m made of rocks.”
“Well that’s not fair! How am I supposed to win, or…
whatever it is I’m trying to do? No, wait…my claws! I will
attack with my claws! It will not hurt me if it fails, it
would be like clipping my nails, and clipping nails doesn’t
hurt!”
Saying this, the monster raised its claws and ran
towards Blocky.
“I’ve got to enter a defense!” said Quesley, quickly
typing “Super Karate Punch,” with Sandra’s keyboard. He
then hit enter. “Okay, good.”
“What did you type in?!” said Blocky, panicking at the
oncoming intruder.
7/30/2019 The Great Monster Collect: Ice Queen
http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/the-great-monster-collect-ice-queen 14/37
“Super karate punch,” said Quesley. “Sorry, forgot to
tell you.”
“Alright,” said Blocky, now more confident. “Super…
Karate…Punch!”
Saying this, he leapt forward, pulled his hand back,
and punched the monster right in his belly. The monster
ended up on his back, but he soon sat up.
“Wh…” he sobbed. “Why are you being so mean to me?”
“It’s not that I like hitting you,” said Blocky. “But
you can’t attack people like this.”
“Quesley,” said Sandra. “I don’t think the moguuna
will be defeated so easily. Perhaps you should use this
opportunity to capture it.”
“Alright…” said Quesley. Reaching into his backpack,
he pulled out a net and threw it. “Nn!”
The net covered the monster.
“A net?” he said (it was a he).
“Yes,” said Quesley. “A net.”
“Good job!” said Renell.
“Not yet,” said Quesley. “I have to convince him to
join us. See, monster collectors used to trap monsters
inside these mechanical squares that forced them to join
you, but that was considered inhumane. So we have to talk
to them.”
7/30/2019 The Great Monster Collect: Ice Queen
http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/the-great-monster-collect-ice-queen 15/37
Cautiously, Quesley approached the Moguuna. The
Moguuna appeared angry, and the net didn’t look like it
would hold him very long. Renell got nervous.
“Do you,” Quesley said slowly. “Do you wanna be…best
buddies?”
Immediately, the moguuna’s face lit up.
“Yes!” he said, standing up with the net still over
him. “Best buddies!”
“Congratulations!” said Sandra. “You have successfully
captured a moguuna!”
“Here, let me help you out of that,” said Renell,
helping the moguuna out of the net.
“Thanks!” he said.
“Sandra,” said Quesley. “Now can you scan him?”
“Of course!” said Sandra. “Commencing scan!”
A small, green loading bar appeared on the screen and
filled up within seconds.
“LalalalaLALALALA-complete! Moguuna’s are Ogre type
monsters. They can use their claws for small, contained
thunder and lighting and they can also learn to be very
fast. Fierce when wild, but loyal when befriended. He’ll
make a great ally! With Sandra, it’s always personal!”
“How about a name?” suggested Renell.
7/30/2019 The Great Monster Collect: Ice Queen
http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/the-great-monster-collect-ice-queen 16/37
Quesley looked up at the monster, and the monster
looked down at Quesley.
“The perfect name,” Quesley said.
“Yes,” said the Moguuna. “If we’re thinking the same
name, that is.”
“Bear!” they both said at once.
“Please enter it here,” said Sandra, as a place to
type appeared. Quesley obey. “Thank you,” said Sandra. “It
will take half an hour to register Bear. Until then,
returning him is not recommended, but afterward, it is, as
he’ll need rest after being capture and then traveling with
you for half an hour. With Sandra, it’s always personal.”
“That’s good,” said Blocky. “Being made of rocks can
be pretty tiring, and I was up late last night keeping the
chickens locked up. I need a nap. Mind taking over,
brownie?”
“Not at all!” said Bear.
“Good job, Blocky,” said Quesley, waving Sandra.
“Return.”
Pop! Blocky was gone.
“So whater’ we doing?” Bear asked curiously.
“We’re looking for the nearest Cascade Stone,” said
Quesley.
7/30/2019 The Great Monster Collect: Ice Queen
http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/the-great-monster-collect-ice-queen 17/37
“Sounds like fun!” said Bear. “Do I get to go on
adventure’s all the time now?”
“Sure do!” answered Quesley.
“Yes! And it’s all thanks to my new best buddy and his
monster collecting skills!”
“Hey come on, I’m not that good…”
“I wonder why they thought they needed the squares?”
Renell wondered to herself.
“Am I really in like with her Majesty the Ice Queen?”
Bronze thought to himself. “Maybe I am. Yes. I think I am.
But I have to be slow about it. Unless…unless she doesn’t
want a boyfriend! But would it not make her feel more
normal if I decided to be her boyfriend?”
Bronze thought and thought as the class went on, but
he still took notes about what the teacher said.
“I don’t know how to go about this, she is the Ice
Queen after all,” he thought. “But perhaps we should keep
being friends, her and I. Are we friends? She has asked
about the mechanics of spoons on many occasions. I like
spoons. Spoons solve so many problems. Ah! I must keep
paying attention!”
“-so now you understand why chickens can’t be lawyers,
no…they just can’t. I’m sorry, but they lost that case in
7/30/2019 The Great Monster Collect: Ice Queen
http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/the-great-monster-collect-ice-queen 18/37
the eighties. And that’s why mango flavored ice cream was
never successful.”
The bell rang.
“Okay, class,” said the teacher. “So yeah, our teams
for the assignment. Remember your teammates.”
“Who are my teammates again?” Bronze whispered to
Snazzy as people started to get up.
“Meeee,” he said. “Frizzyyyyy, and Jimmeena. We agreed
to do it at your house, and-”
“Jimmeena?” said Bronze. “She’s helping with the
assignment? When did we agree to do it at my house?”
“This afternoon!” smiled Snazzy. “We’ll go right from
school to-”
“No, I meant when did we make the agreement?”
“Well, when the teacher paired us up, you said, ‘Okay,
we can do the assignment at my house,’ but then you looked
preoccupied, and Frizzy was like, ‘is he gonna remember?’
and you didn’t.”
“But I’m gonna be so nervous!” said Bronze. “How do I
make her majesty more welcome?”
At that moment, Jimmeena passed them by.
“We shall all walk together back from school then?”
she asked.
7/30/2019 The Great Monster Collect: Ice Queen
http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/the-great-monster-collect-ice-queen 19/37
“Yes your majesty,” said Bronze, with a bow. To this,
Jimmeena looked down and left the room.
“I did it again!” said Bronze. “I really do get
nervous around her!”
Bronze opened his desk. A slime monster was in it.
“Shhhhh!” it said. “We’re just playing hide and seek.
Don’t tell the others?”
“I won’t, but be out of here by tomorrow,” Bronze said
nonchalantly.
“Thanks!” said the slime. “By the way, perhaps a gift
would make her more welcome.”
“But what?”
“Don’t ask me. I’m just a slime.”
Bronze closed the desk.
“It’s like I’m always in third place,” he sighed.
“Third place isn’t so bad,” said Snazzy. “It means you
had fun and got to win something.”
Quesley, Renell and Bear had asked around at the
cabins, and now they were back in the forest. They learned
that the Cascade Stone was in Ocean Rock.
“That tree over there, right?” said Quesley, once they
were back at the trees.
7/30/2019 The Great Monster Collect: Ice Queen
http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/the-great-monster-collect-ice-queen 20/37
“Correct!” said Sandra. “Once you go through the
portal, I can get a lock on the stone, but beware of a
possible boss. Oh, and by the way, Bear’s registration has
been approved, and he is now your monster completely. You
can return him now. With Sandra, it’s always personal!”
“What do you say buddy?” Quesley said to Bear. “Need a
rest?”
“I guess,” said Bear, stretching his arms out. “But
send me out again if you need me!”
“I will!”
Quesley waved his Computer. Pop! Bear disappeared. And
so, Quesley and Renell walked towards the tree that would
lead them to ocean rock.
“Renell,” Quesley asked, after some silence. “I’m just
curios; are you sure you don’t want me to show you how to
be a monster collector?”
“No think so,” Renell answered. “I…” She kicked a
pebble nervously. “I like being a larmengryver.”
“But don’t you ever wonder what’s it’s like to be a
monster collector?” said Quesley. “And, I mean, isn’t your
whole family larmengryvers?”
Renell smiled.
“Isn’t your whole family monster collectors?” she said.
7/30/2019 The Great Monster Collect: Ice Queen
http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/the-great-monster-collect-ice-queen 21/37
“Good point,” chuckled Quesley. “I guess…I guess not
everyone likes to collect monsters as I do.”
“But we’re glad you do,” said Renell. “We
larmengryvers really appreciate what you guys do.”
“Thanks!”
The two walked through the portal as their
conversation came to a close. There they were. Ocean Rock.
They were under the shade of rocky cliffs, but with full
view of the sand and the ocean right next to them. They
could feel the breeze. The tree was behind them in the sand.
“Okay!” said Sandra. “I’ve got a lock on the Cascade
Orb!”
Later that day, Bronze, Frizzy, Snazzy and Jimmeena
made it to the house. Once or twice they almost wandered
into the sewers or up to the top of a telephone pole, but
luckily Snazzy had a great sense of direction. Once they
went inside, they went to the living room to study.
“Wow,” said Frizzy, fanning herself off with a large
spoon. “It’s really hot.”
After that comment, she took out her notebooks and
papers. So did Snazzy. And so did Bronze. And as they began
to open up the books, and as each of them began to recap
the class through their notes, everything seemed to get
7/30/2019 The Great Monster Collect: Ice Queen
http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/the-great-monster-collect-ice-queen 22/37
cooler. Much cooler. Bronze put his book down. Jimmeena was
using her hands to retain a large ice crystal in the middle
of the table, and flakes of snow began to fly throughout
the room.
“Um, your majesty,” said Bronze. “We can turn on the
air conditioner…”
“Ah! Silly me!” said Jimmeena. The ice crystal
vanished and the snow disappeared as she put her hands
down. “But…” She got more sad as she said this. “But…you
can call me Jimmeena…”
Bronze was frustrated with himself for referring to
her as royalty again.
“I did it again! Way to make her even more
uncomfortable,” he thought to himself. At loss for words,
he got up to turn on the air conditioner. Moment’s later,
Bronze’s mother walked past the living room. She smiled and
waved at Snazzy, and then Frizzy, but when he eyes shifted
over to Jimmeena, she started giggling.
“Why does she giggle?” Jimmeena asked politely.
“Oh, pay no attention to me, dear,” Bronze’s mother
answered. “Just go ahead with your studies. Do any of you
want some soda?”
“Why yes, that would be nice,” all four teens said in
unison.
7/30/2019 The Great Monster Collect: Ice Queen
http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/the-great-monster-collect-ice-queen 23/37
“Very weeeell,” said mother, as she danced into the
kitchen. Now Bronze was embarrassed.
“It’s okay, I don’t think Jimmeena caught on,” he
thought to himself.
“Alright,” said Snazzy. “So now that we’ve recapped
the class, let’s begin our assignment. Frizzy?”
To this, Frizzy reached into her backpack and pulled
out a large, metal octagon, painted green with blue
stripes, and quickly placed it on the table with a thud.
“We need to write a report about that,” she said.
Quesley and Renell had been walking through ocean rock
for almost an hour now. The waves splashed onto the sand,
as the rocky roof provided nice shade.
“At this rate, we might not find the cascade orb
before dinner,” sighed Renell. Quesley pulled out his
computer.
“Don’t worry, children,” said Sandra. “According to my
calculations, the Cascade Stone should be about two hundred
and fifty yards away!”
“Thanks, Sandra,” said Quesley. “I guess we’re close.”
“But what about the boss?” said Renell. “What if he’s
protecting the Cascade Stone like he planned?”
7/30/2019 The Great Monster Collect: Ice Queen
http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/the-great-monster-collect-ice-queen 24/37
“Then we’ll ask nicely to have it. This is just for
fun, after all,” answered Quesley.
“Yeah, I guess so.”
“But you know,” said Quesley, more slowly. “Monsters,
they…they don’t always do things just for fun…sometimes
they don’t like being nice. Sometimes they’re dangerous.”
Renell smiled.
“But isn’t that what monster collectors are for?” she
said. Quesley looked up and smiled too.
“Yeah,” he said. “I guess you’re right.”
“So if he’s a mean monster, you can either collect him
or make him leave humans alone.”
“You’re right. Thanks, Renell! Though…I’ve never
collected a boss before.”
“First time for eeeeverything!” said Sandra. “So if
you’re forced to use force, I suggest you strategize! With
Sandra, it’s always personal!”
“We can use Blocky,” said Quesley.
“I’m afraid he’s still resting,” said Sandra.
“What about White?” said Renell. “White the
minidragon?”
“He’s actually my dad’s monster,” said Quesley. “He
took him back to help out with the investigation.”

“What about Clorgul?” asked Renell, but she took it
back. Quesley looked unsure. So did Sandra.
“Yeah…” said Quesley. “I don’t think that’s gonna
work.”
“Poor Clorgul,” said Sandra.
“I guess we’ll have to use Bear,” said Quesley.
“And that’s a good thing,” said Sandra. “According to
my sensors, the boss is an h2o type, so electricity should
be effective!”
“Yeah, but Bear’s an Ogre type, so we should be
careful. You should always be careful when using an ogre
type.”
“Agreed,” said Sandra. “Now be careful, children! With
Sandra, it’s always personal!”
“Okay,” said Quesley, nearly minutes later. “The stone
should be close.”
“So should the boss,” said Sandra. “Be careful,
children…”
“Yups,” said Renell.
Slowly and carefully, the two children turned a corner
around the rocks of the beach. There were many rocks
throughout the long, large, wide sandy coast of sand. The
children walked and walked until they saw something in the

distance, it was big and red. Nothing happened. So they
walked closer.
“Q…Quesley,” Renell nervously asked as they approached
what was ahead. “Will you…come to my ballet recital?”
“You do not have a ballet recital, you are eleven,”
Quesley answered.
“Oh yeah,” said Renell nervously. She always tried to
make plans when she was nervous. Eventually, the two made
it closer to what they were approaching as the waves
splashed on the rocks. It was a big, round, red crab. He
was about five feet tall, seven feet wide, and seemed to be
sitting curled up on top of something that they couldn’t
see because he was sitting on it.
“Ahhhh!” said the children.
“Heeeey!” said the crab.
“Glazhaloush!” said Sandra. “One of the biggest h20
type monsters to roam the shore! Be careful, children. This
is the boss!”
“Indeed I am!” said the crab. “And there’s no way
you’re taking this here Cascade Stone away from me!”
“You’re sitting on the cascade orb?” said Renell.
“Yupers!”
“Can we have it?” asked Quesley.

“No!” answered the crab (it’s a glazhaloush, but we
shall call him the crab). “You humans think everything
belongs to you. Monsters…Cascade Stones…everything! If you
want this Cascade Stone, you’ll have to collect me first!”
“But it doesn’t do anything!” said Renell. “Why
protect it?”
“Why collect it?” said the crab
“He does have a point,” said Quesley. “We shall go.”
“Go where?” asked the crab. “Or didn’t you know that
bosses, such as yours truly, can block out portals? I’m
doing that now and now you can’t escape!”
“Why?” said Renell.
“I won’t let you leave until you admit that humans
shouldn’t collect monsters!”
Quesley stopped, and froze.
“I…cannot lie like that,” he said solemnly. Then he
looked the crab in the eyes. “I have to collect monsters to
keep them from doing things such as trapping children and
forcing them to admit that humans shouldn’t collect
monsters! And we don’t know who else is here, so for
safety, I need you to un-block the portal, even if that
means I have to collect you!”
“Collect away!” the crab said, waving his claw.

“Huuuuuuyah!” Quesley yelled as he ran in to punch the
crab, but the crab blocked with his claw (it was a hard
claw). Quesley shuffled back and jumped at the crab, but
the crab stepped back and Quesley landed on the ground.
“Diamond Wind!” Renell said as she leapt into the air
with her knee forward. The crab blocked her knee with his
claw, so she bounced off backwards and landed on her feet.
Quesley tried to kick up at the crab, but the crab jumped
forward and perched himself back on the Cascade Stone,
pushing Quesley’s leg and Quesley with it back.
“This isn’t working,” said Renell. “We should bring
out a monster.”
“Yes,” said Quesley. “Actually, I don’t know why we
didn’t do that in the first place.”
Quesley waved his computer. Pop! Bear showed up
immediately.
“Is it time already for another adventure?” he said
with excitement.
“No, it is time for a boss,” said Quesley, pointing to
the glazhaloush.
“Oh my, what a big crab!” said Bear.
“Thank you!” said the crab (he liked being big, he was
a boss after all).

“We have to defeat him or else we cannot leave,” said
Renell, as she and Quesley stepped back.
“I see,” said Bear, wriggling his claws. “Then you may
wish to cover your ears.”
Quesley had already entered the command into his
computer. It was a good thing Bear had guessed right.
Renell put on a pair of giant, fluffy ear-muffs.
“Thunder Claw!” he shouted, as the booming noise was
made, but the crab knew to cover his ears as well.
“Waterrrrrrrrr-splllash!” the crab said, waving his
claw. Water showed up and splashed bear in the face.
“So, you’re an h2o type,” said Bear, clearly not
bothered by the splash of water. “In that case, Lightning
Claw!” The blue electricity came as bear waved his claw,
but the crab leaned back and prepared an attack of his own.
“Waterrrrrrrr-wwwave!” the crab said, waving his claw,
but this time, a water boomerang shot out, hit bear, and
exploded into water, knocking him back towards the children.
“I was not expecting that, but I suppose he is a boss
after all,” said Bear as he sat up and recovered.
“Bear, get up!” Quesley said as encouragement. Bear
did so and attacked with another lightning claw, and it
worked. But the crab was still okay.

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/the-great-monster-collect-ice-queen 30/37
“I may be weak to lighting,” he said. “But I am a
boss, after all. It’s gonna take more than that to collect
me!”
Then he reached out and flicked Bear with his claw,
and Bear didn’t like it. In fact, this time, he didn’t get
up.
“Oh no!” said Renell. “What are we to do?”
“I…I don’t know!” said Quesley. But he had to
encourage. He just had to. “Bear, get up!” he said again.
Bear groaned, his eyes only half open. “Bear, get up!”
Quesley repeated.
Bear was a trooper. Bear didn’t give up. He and
Quesley had that in common. Bear got up.
“I won’t let you keep my bestest buddies here!” he
roared as he faced the crab. “Lighting Claw!” And with
thrust of his clawy hand, he electrocuted the crab again.
“Thunder Claw!” he said.
“How will a sound help?” questioned Renell, but then
she saw something happen; suddenly, the crab was surrounded
by green electricity.
“The lightning and thunder combo!” said Sandra. “They
say that only moguunas can do that. According to legend,
they are taught to use the lightning and thunder combo

after they learn about justice! With Sandra, it’s always
personal.”
“Of course!” said Renell. “Thunder comes after
lightning!”
Quesley looked into his monsters determined eyes, as
the monster continued his attack.
“Then…Bear knows about justice,” he said. He was proud.
After the attack ended, the crab was too tired to
fight back.
“Quesley, now!” said Sandra. Without a moment’s
hesitation, Quesley threw a net over the crab (it wasn’t
big enough to cover him, but oh well).
“That’s…just…great,” said crab said, panting. “Just
another human trying to own something else. You humans are
all the same!”
“Don’t talk like that!” said Bear. “What life is there
for wild monsters? Sitting around, collecting things we
don’t need, hurting people we don’t know…there’s no honor!
Well I was like that, but not anymore! Not since Quesley
collected me!”
“Then you’ve become soft.”
“Soft?! You speak of softness? Is it soft to protect
the weak? Then I’ll be soft! Don’t you understand? It’s
great to be with humans! We can make a difference! We can
7/30/2019 The Great Monster Collect: Ice Queen
http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/the-great-monster-collect-ice-queen 32/37
mean something! Few like to think it, but there is great
honor in humbleness!”
The crab starred into the sea. The sea was not his
home. What was he doing, this crab? Living away on the dull
coast. Hiding his family’s Cascade Stone, even though they
didn’t care of it anymore. When he looked deep at the sun
across the sea, he knew what he wanted, the crab.
“Then I shall join you,” he said. Then he gave them
the Cascade Stone, the blue, spherical, shiny Cascade
Stone. “It’s yours.”
“You mean you really want to join us?” said Quesley.
“Yes,” said the crab.
“Hooray!” cheered Sandra, as the screen lit up.
“Congratulations, Quesley! You have collected your first
boss!”
“Really?” said the crab. “Wow. Congratulations!”
They shook hands.
“Oh my, I almost forgot,” said Sandra, exited. “Please
enter a name.”
“How about Chip?” said Quesley.
“I get a name?” said the crab. “Yes…Chip. That will do
just fine.”

And so, with yet another new friend in their company,
Quesley and Renell made it safely back home to Quesley’s
back yard (Chip took down the barriers).
When they got home, the teenagers had plenty finished
their homework.
“I say,” said Snazzy. “This has to be just about the
most interesting octagon I’ve ever written a report about.”
“Yeah,” said Frizzy with surprising enthusiasm. “It
seemed really boring at first, but once we did our
research…”
Bronze had gone out into the kitchen to refill
everyone’s soda. He noticed that both his mother and
Quesley were in the kitchen, laughing.
“But nonetheless, good work on collecting your first
boss,” said Mother. “I am so proud of you. But I have to go
now. The phone has been ringing for a good twenty seconds.”
“Bye!” waved Quesley as she left.
“What were you two laughing about?” questioned Bronze.
“Bronze, I did it!” said Quesley. “I found it!”
Saying this, he took the Cascade Stone from his pocket.
“Here,” he said. “It’s yours. You can give it to
Jimmeena as a gift!”
7/30/2019 The Great Monster Collect: Ice Queen
http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/the-great-monster-collect-ice-queen 34/37
“I beg your pardon, what?” said Bronze. “It would not
impress Jimmeena to give her something that my little
brother gave me, you are younger after all.”
“But Bronze, don’t you remember?” said Quesley. “You
did find it! Remember? All those years ago?”
And Bronze thought. And Bronze remembered. He
remembered going to the shore, with his monsters, and his
best friend larmengryver, Snazzy. They found the stone, yes
indeed, but they did not take it with them. Did Bronze
remember why? No. He was too tired.
“Sandra downloaded the coordinates from your personal
computer, you said she could do things like that, after
all,” said Quesley. “I couldn’t have found the stone if you
hadn’t in the past. So you see, you did find the Cascade
Stone. I just collected it.”
Bronze was nervous.
“But her ma-I mean, Jimmeena,” he said.
“Maybe Jimmeena will like that childlike worldview
from you,” said Quesley. He held up the orb. “If you want
it back.”
Bronze nodded and took the orb.
“Yeah,” he said. “I think I do. Thank you, Quesley.
Maybe…” he paused, and thought. “Maybe I should go
monster collecting more often again…yeah.”
7/30/2019 The Great Monster Collect: Ice Queen
http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/the-great-monster-collect-ice-queen 35/37
Quesley didn’t keep the orb, but he did get to keep
Chip, the boss crab he collected, so everyone was happy.
“Jimmeena,” said Bronze, as she came into the kitchen
and Quesley left. “I…I have a present for you.”
“And you call me Jimmeena!” Jimmeena added.
“Yeah,” chuckled Bronze. “Um…here.”
Jimmeena starred at the shiny Stone.
“Bronze…” she said quietly, taking the Stone.
“What?” said Bronze nervously, thinking, “Oh no!”
“Bronze, I…I…I LOVE IT!”
Bronze sighed with relief. Jimmeena was happy.
“I have to name it!” she said with excitement. “I will
name it Carl!”
“Carl.”
“Carl.”
“Alright, Carl!”
Bronze and Jimmeena were both happy about Carl. But
more than this, at that moment, Bronze and Jimmeena were
happy about Bronze and Jimmeena. Never again would Bronze
call her “your majesty.” They were now friends.
“Bronze, Quesley! Quesley, Bronze!” said the mother,
skipping into the kitchen with the phone in her hand.
Quesley ran in as well to hear what his mother had to say.
7/30/2019 The Great Monster Collect: Ice Queen
http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/the-great-monster-collect-ice-queen 36/37
“It is your father!” she said. “He solved the case!
He’s coming home in just a few days!”
“How many?” said Bronze.
The mother left the room. Five minutes later, she came
back.
“Four!” she answered.
“Four?”
“Four!”
“Alright, four!”
The mother was happy. Bronze was happy. Quesley was
happy. The father was coming home soon.
“He solved the case!” said Quesley.
“I am happy for you and your father,” said Jimmeena.
“Us too!” said Snazzy and Frizzy as they emerged from
the refrigerator and heat vent respectively.
“This calls for more soda,” said the mother. “I will
be right back.”
And so, strapping the jetpack to her back, she pushed
the button, lifted up her fist, and blasted away through
the ceiling.
“I can’t wait to see dad again,” said Quesley, as the
mice put the ceiling back together. Jimmeena, Snazzy and
Frizzy were all getting ready to leave.
7/30/2019 The Great Monster Collect: Ice Queen

“And I can’t wait to see you again,” she said
bashfully under her breath (she meant Bronze).
And so, the dad was done with his case, Quesley
captured his first boss, and Bronze became a closer friend
to the Ice Queen. Everyone lived happily until the next day.
What adventures will Quesley have tomorrow?
