Grace and Peace to you in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ:
When I sat down to write this, my intent was to expound upon the quote “Always we begin again” from St.
Benedict. While I was writing I remembered another quote from Martin Heidegger, “Only the person who will
risk returning to paths long trodden will really find new paths.”
As we begin this new journey together I am excited by the passion, excitement, and love I have found here at
Yadkinville UMC. I am still trying to wrap my head around all of the
ministries that this congregation supports and participates in. This
congregation indeed has “paths long trodden” that will guide our
ministry together.
Often in Churches, we think about our “long trodden paths” as
programs or things. I don’t think this is what Martin Heidegger means.
The path that brings people and congregations into the fullness of
God’s ministry is the narrow way of Christ. It is found in those things
John Wesley called the Means of Grace, searching scripture, prayer,
community, worship, Communion, and fasting. Our long trodden path
is none other than faithful listening and responding to God.
Faithfulness isn’t in the latest thing, it isn’t in flashing lights, or catchy
ideas. Faithfulness to God is found in following Christ. From all that I
have seen, Yadkinville has a full measure of faithfulness.
When we compare ourselves to other churches and say “They have X so we need X,” we miss something. A
church can’t be too old, young, rich, poor, traditional, contemporary, progressive, or conservative. A church
isn’t going to grow or die based on their building, parking, seating, technology, website, Sunday school, youth
group, preaching style… I could go on. These things are important, but they aren’t Jesus. They are tools that
help us tell the story, but they aren’t the story.
Our response to what Christ is doing in our midst is what determines who we are as a congregation. What
faithful churches do well is share their story of what God is doing.
Yadkinville, God is with us. Christ has saved us. The Holy Spirit has called us together. This is the long trodden
path we are called back to. This is our story to tell, and we are the only ones who can tell it.

Henry Jonathan Gaylord was born July 20 at
10:48 PM - 6 pound 14 ounces and 20 inches
long. Everyone is doing great. Thank you for

introducing Henry to his new church family!

Paternity Leave: Pastor Jonathan will be on Paternity Leave this month and will return to the pulpit on
August 26. Rev. Rex Cranfill will be providing pastoral care during Pastor Jonathan's paternity leave. Rex is a
retired minister who worships at Center UMC and lives in Yadkinville. His number is (336)679-2706.
August Worship Schedule: We will have both services each Sunday in August.
August 5 Rev. Sarah Howell-Miller, Prioress of The Foundry House, an intentional community
on the campus of Crossnore School & Children’s Home in Winston-Salem, will preach. August 12 Tara Olson, a certified Lay Servant from Clemmons UMC, will preach.
August 19 Rev. Dennis Shaw, Director of Yadkin Baptist Association, will preach.
August 26 Rev. Jonathan Gaylord returns from Paternity leave.

Church Council: The Church Council met on Tuesday July 24th to discuss the
concerns of our church. Anyone is welcomed to attend these meetings. Our next meeting is
scheduled for September 11th at 7:00 p.m. Please continue to be in prayer for our church as
we work toward equipping ourselves for the future through guidance from our new pastor

Our power bill is higher than normal so please make sure the thermostats are set properly when you
leave.
We will start evaluating the sound systems in the Church when Jonathan returns. If you have any
expertise in this area let Virgil Dodson know. The carpets are scheduled to be cleaned in middle of August.
Another chair cleaning session will be scheduled later. If you see a very dirty chair or one that needs repairing,

Funtimers: The Funtimers will meet at the church on Wednesday, August 15, and travel to
Sparta for lunch. We will leave at 9:30 a.m. We will also visit with Allen & Rachel Brandon.

United Methodist Women: Greetings from United Methodist Women. UMW Gathering met July 17
with twenty one ladies attending. The Yadkin Valley District Social Action
Coordinator, Joyce Irby, led the program. I was on vacation, but from the reports I
have received, the program was very good. The group was divided into smaller
groups with topics of social issues discussed among the individual groups. Sandy
Steele reported on her group, which was the Racial Justice Time Line. They
learned many interesting facts related to our organization from 1873 to today. In
2016 Racial Justice Charter Support teams convened for the first time. For more information about the Charter,
there are copies of The Charter for Racial Justice in our church library.
Another Important fact Joyce shared in the Yadkin Valley District Newsletter about immigrants in NC:
“About 7.3% of North Carolinians are unauthorized/undocumented, and 85% of children with immigrant
parents are U.S. citizens. Our state would lose $14.5 billion in economic activity and about 101,000 jobs if all
unauthorized immigrants were removed.” (from the NC Religious Coalition from Justice for Immigrants.)
Sandy Steele, Valerie Prim, and Mildred Carter attended Mission U. We will be providing one or more
of the studies in the fall. We look forward to receiving and sharing this information.

Missions: Every month the Missions Committee is focusing on a Mission Outreach project. All loose plate
offering and designated offerings during August will go to this project. The August Mission Focus is the Back
Pack Program.
Back Pack Program: The mission focus for August is the YES Backpack Program. This program began
on April 30, 2010 and serves the children at Yadkinville Elementary School.
Yadkinville United Methodist Church and Center United Methodist Church
provide funds for the meals and help deliver them. The meals are provided
by the Second Harvest Food Bank. Children qualify based on need and
whether they receive free or reduced lunch. Parents are sent permission slips
before children can participate. The food is housed at Center United
Methodist Church and volunteers pack and deliver to YES on the last day of
the week that the kids are in school. Usually we serve between 40-60 kids
each week. The cost of the food is approximately $8,000-$10,000 a year depending on the number of kids
served! Please consider a contribution to the YES Food Backpack Program during the month of August.

Summer Fun 2018: Almost 60 children participated in Summer Fun 2018. Many willing volunteers
provided leadership and support for the program. Hopefully, this is a complete list: Sandy Steele,

This year at Summer Fun, we emphasized reading with direction from Debby Gunnell. Some volunteers came
for reading, kids helped each other, and leaders selected appropriate books. Kids took a book home each
Tuesday and took food home on Thursdays. The kids had fun with the Y and some outdoor play, inside games,
food, and worship.
Yadkin Christian Ministries: YCM needs for August are pasta and sauce. Please place in the containers in the
Commons.

Childrens Ministries: The Children's Sunday School Class is continuing their VBS Bible Story series.
The children have been learning about Samuel and David and will continue with the rest of the series. The
Children's Ministry Committee will meet soon to discuss plans for a back to school social as well as year-end
events.

Hymn Sing: The Yadkin Missional Network is hosting a hymn sing at
Mitchell's Chapel UMC on Sunday, August 12, at 3:00 p.m. Several of our
United Methodist Church choirs will be participating. An offering will be
received for NETworX. Refreshments will be provided.
