A Note from Pastor Susan
Hello Dear Ones, The picture you see along with my note today is of a group of jellyfish. They often travel in packs like this and they are beautiful! You probably cannot see by the picture, but if you were to zoom in you would see hair like feelers ebbing and flowing with the ocean currents. It is almost hypnotic! If you saw them in action, you would notice their "dance-like" quality as they travel to and fro under the water. It is
tempting to want to reach out and touch them.....but beware, these jellyfish have stingers! Those hair like feelers are filled with poison that can kill fish and other prey that these jellyfish consume as food. Some jellyfish can kill a human being with one brush against the skin! These animals are reminders that reaching for what we want is not always a good idea. The same is true for us, dear ones. Reaching out for that extra dessert may taste good but ends up being not so good for our bodies, believe me, I know! Reaching out for what we want is instinctual, but what we want is not always what is best for us. Temptations are all around us friends. Maybe you are being tempted right now. Tempted to reach for something you shouldn't, tempted to act out in anger or resentment, tempted to fill an empty spot in your life with whatever is near and easy. Dear Ones, God's Word says that God’s ways are not our ways...they are ALWAYS better! I have a sign in my office on the wall - SELF-DISCIPLINE: The difference between what you want NOW and what you want MOST. Friends, as followers of Jesus, we want to live a life in a way that honors God most. If you also believe that, what will you do (or NOT do) now to make that happen? Choose the better way....God's way! And stay away from the Jellyfish! His....and Yours, Pastor Susan

Get Your Church Apparel! Tee's, polo's, sweatshirts and tie dye shirts with the church logo screen printed on them will be available for order beginning this Sunday. Orders will be taken until August 11 and items should arrive in time for the Fair. Payment is requested at the time of purchase with checks made out to: LPUMC Youth. Various colors and styles are available, stop by the cart after service to see samples and pick up an order form. Corrie Roberts can answer any questions about the apparel sales.
Fellowship Opportunity - Dine out!
"Texas Roadhouse” has been one of LPUMC's annual Dine Out stops. Once again on Wednesday, August 14 from 4:00 to 9:00PM, we will meet there for Fun, Food, and Fellowship (a 3F event). Bring your coupon, and join us. A portion of the money spent will be rebated back to LPUMC. That money is applied to our mortgage principal. It's an easy way to pay down the loan. Everyone eats out at least one time a month. Join the fun!
Fellowship + Crabs = FUN at the La Plata UMC Crab Feast Please join the Fellowship ministries team at Port Tobacco Marina on Tuesday, August 6 from 5-8PM. This family friendly restaurant located on the water and right up the road, will be reserving tables just for our church where we can enjoy a summertime favorite in Maryland, Steamed Blue Crabs! Crabs will be available for $25/dozen and all other menu items can be ordered as well (everyone pays for their own). If you’ve never experienced the fellowship and fun of cracking crabs and un-shelling the delectable morsels of buttery crab goodness, you are missing out!! No experience is needed – a brother or sister sitting next to you will teach you! We need to give the restaurant an estimate of crab eaters so they can have extra on supply. Sign up during church this Sunday at both services or contact the Church office no later than Friday, August 2. We hope to see you at the Marina!
Campers Head to Manidokan! This Sunday, seven of our youth head to summer camp at Manidokan. This makes a total of ten campers from our church attending a BWC summer camp, amazing! Please be praying for: Leanne, Thomas, Ryann, Hailey, Nick, Ben and Nicole as they enjoy a week of Christian fellowship, adventurous activities, worship and exploring God's beautiful land. Thank you all for your support of our campers!
Gearing up for Sunday School Plans are underway for another fantastic year of Sunday School! Mark your calendars for September 8 when Sunday School will begin. Classes are offered each week for ages 2 and up! We have three adult classes, one middle school class, a high school class and of course several classes for elementary age kids. Registration will begin next week! A link will be on our church website as well as paper forms if those are easier for you. If you would like to volunteer your time either teaching a class or being a substitute, please contact Corrie Roberts. Working with children and youth is a great way to support the life of our church!

LPUMC to Host 57th Annual Early Childhood Educators Statewide Conference On Thursday, August 8th we will be hosting a conference for Early Childhood Educators that is sponsored by the Baltimore Washington Conference of the UMC’s Directors Roundtable. This conference will be for teachers, aides and directors working in child care centers in our conference, as well as, area child care centers or family providers. Over 250 attendees will spend the day in workshops utilizing almost every room in our church! Pastor Susan will be the Keynote Speaker and will lead the participants in worship prior to the day getting started. I will need some volunteers to help guide everyone around our church building, which as you know, can be a bit confusing. I would need you to be here around 8am until around 11. If you would like to help out, please contact me at [email protected]. Julie Robbins

Everything I need to know, I learned from Noah's Ark. Don't miss the boat. Remember that we are all in the same boat. Plan ahead. It wasn't raining when Noah built the Ark. Stay fit. When you're 60 years old, someone may ask you to do something really big. Don't listen to critics; just get on with the job that needs to be done. Build your future on high ground. For safety's sake, travel in pairs. Speed isn't always an advantage. The snails were on board with the cheetahs. When you're stressed, float awhile. Remember, the Ark was built by amateurs; the Titanic by professionals. No matter the storm, when you are with God, there's always a rainbow waiting.
