THE GRAPE-SCCIN

An AA Miracle“One of our group members has died,” someone announced before the meeting recently.

“Oh, no!” people gasped. “She was so young!”

It was a shock and huge loss; Joan S. had just celebrated 35 years of sobriety and was very well-liked. During the course of the meeting, her obituary was passed around the group. People read it solemnly, some sharing during the meeting how much she had meant. Yes, there was her first name in the obituary, spelled right. And the photo looked just like her—big smile and all. View from both sides of H&IMy memories of H&I go back to my first days in a treatment center. I was amazed that a group of people, including a professional woman in a suit, had driven 60 miles to rural Minnesota to come to talk with us about AA. I didn’t realize it at the time, but that woman had a huge impact on me and, six months after my AA journey began, I somehow ended up being in charge of Bridging the Gap* in Minneapolis.

One person can make a difference in another’s life when it comes

to jails and institutions.

Two years after finding AA, I was asked to join a group of women going to a jail-affiliated meeting in Pennsylvania. When I asked why I should go—self-centeredness, still a centerpiece of my life—one of them responded, “The only difference between them and us is that they got caught.” I couldn’t argue that point. I should have been in jail many times. H&I has been important to me and my recovery ever since.

Q What's the best thing about H&I service?

A The enormous sense of gratitude for my recovery coupled with a hope that perhaps someone might hear something that can change their life. The stories I hear reinforce my faith in and my love for AA.

Saved By H&IIn 2006 I was introduced to Alcoholics Anonymous through a Hospitals and Institutions meeting. While I spent 40 days in a treatment center in Southern California, I can honestly say that the H&I meetings were my saving grace. They were the light at the end of a very dark tunnel.

In the 11 years I have been sober I’ve been able to do service in treatment centers, group homes, maternity homes, homeless shelters, behavior health units and jails. Some commitments are easier then others, but it’s always an honor and a privilege.

In my early years of sobriety I kept a regular service commitment at a local recovery center giving rides to patients to outside meetings. Every week, on Tuesday and Thursday, I would pick up several clients and take them to a “real” meeting. The rides to and from the meetings were no more then 10 minutes long, but in that short time

we were able to connect through the common bond of alcoholism. One of my closest friends in my life today is a woman I drove to her first women’s meeting.

Being of service in H&I didn’t always go smoothly, one time I had to go back without two of the treatment centers clients! I have chaired meetings, where there were only two other people in the meeting and they both fell asleep! Regardless of the circumstance or the outcome, I was able to give back what was so freely given to me.

I don’t serve as much as I used to in the area of Hospitals and Institutions. AA gave me a life beyond my wildest dreams. But, had it not been for the men and women who brought meetings to that treatment center, there’s a good chance I wouldn’t be here today. And, for that, I will always be grateful.

H&I and Bridging the Gap

What H&I DoesTwo or more members bring an AA meeting into hospitals, recovery centers, rehabs, community facilities, jails and prisons in Northern California.

As of 2013, Northern California H&I provides almost 42,000 meetings a year, serving 22 major state and federal institutions and hundreds of local jails, hospitals, rehabilitation/recovery centers and other community facilities.

From http://www.handinorcal.org

The Pink CanBecause confined inmates and residents are often unable to purchase literature due to their circumstances, a selection of AA literature is brought into the meeting and provided free to the members who attend. This is where approximately 90% of the money contributed to the H&I Pink Cans goes.

H&I Needs YouH&I needs men and women to carry the message to those who are confined. Meeting secretaries and coordinators are needed at many types of institutions (see next page for current listings. Usually it’s a once a month commitment. Contact Central Office at (831) 475-5782 or visit www.handisc.org.

Q What is something you've learned by being in H&I?A I have a responsibility to be the best version of the Big Book I can be wherever I am.

Q How has H&I service changed you? A I think it helps to keep me right-sized. One person can make a difference in another's life when it comes to jails and institutions.

Q Do you have a favorite H&I story?A I just love to see women I've talked to in jail at an AA meeting outside of jail. It warms my heart and fills it with such great hope for them.

And, of course, this kind of service not only helps me stay sober and keeps me grateful, but it’s one of those times when I know I’m doing God’s will.

Lastly I have to say how grateful I am for the other volunteers. The car rides to and from Soledad are mostly filled with laughter and deep gratitude. We have shared some tears too.

H&I Group No. 1... In 1942, Clinton Truman Duffy, the warden of San Quentin State Prison between 1940 and 1952, noticed that 80 percent of released prisoners ended up back in prison, and that alcohol was usually a contributing factor. Aware of a group called Alcoholics Anonymous that offered recovery from this terrible disease, he invited them into San Quentin to hold meetings with the inmates. Thus, the San Quentin Group #1 became the first group in the Hospital and Institution Committee of Northern California.

Local Articles from the Archives From the March 1993 Grapevine Magazine

The Same Safe FeelingI don’t remember my first few days in the hospital. I know that I was very sick. When I finally said I wanted a shower, one nurse was delighted--she decided that I was going to make it. I wasn’t so sure, but I knew a shower was a good idea.

While I was in the alcohol and drug recovery unit, I attended AA meetings in the main hospital, went to hospital and institutions (H&I) meetings in the “unit,” and I was driven by alumni of the “unit” to local AA meetings in the community. Initially I had gone to the hospital looking for the “cure,” and the hospital was sending me to meetings! All I wanted to do was to sleep, feel sorry for myself, and cry.

One day a hospital volunteer came to my room--a woman who had been sober in AA for fifteen or sixteen years. She told me straight out that the hospital could teach me about brain damage and could nurse me back to physical health, but she told me the hospital could not and would not keep me sober when I walked out of the door at the end of my twenty-eight days.

At first I wondered, what’s the use? If they won’t “fix” me, I won’t stay sober. I had come to the hospital because I could

not get sober on my own.I continued to attend the lectures, yoga

classes, group sessions, and so forth, but I was only going through the motions. Yet I thought about that woman’s words a lot during the next couple of days.

At one of the H&I meetings in the “unit,” the speaker said, “You don’t have to be alone anymore.” I didn’t really know what he meant, but I was awfully glad to hear it.

The following Friday when an alumnus took several of us patients to an AA meeting, there was the same man. What a thrill--to go to a meeting and to see someone I recognized. I knew his story, and that meant that I knew a part of him. His story was not like mine, but the

loneliness, despair, and anger were things I shared with him.

Suddenly I knew that when I left the hospital I did not have to be alone anymore. From that night on I have felt different. I started to listen to other people for the first time in my life. I wanted to learn whatever I could that would help me stay sober.

The hospital taught me about the physical changes in my body caused by alcohol, skipping meals, and lack of sleep. They taught

At one of the H&I meetings in the unit, the speaker said, ‘You don’t have to be alone anymore.’

me the importance of sharing my feelings. They held family counseling sessions.

The hospital was a safe place, the only place I had ever been where I didn’t have to drink. When I left there, of course I was scared. I immediately went to an AA meeting. To my surprise, I had the same safe feeling in that room that I had felt in the hospital.

I wanted to ask for phone numbers, but I didn’t want to bother anyone. I needed a friend, but I was not friendly. It was all I could do to smile and nod when someone spoke to me. Most of the time there were tears of pain mixed with tears of gratitude running down my face. But I was grateful because I knew that I did not

have to be alone anymore. After a year of continuous sobriety I was

fortunate to be asked to co-chair the H&I meeting at my former treatment center with the man who had told me I didn’t have to be alone anymore.

Today, with over three years’ sobriety, my favorite service work is going to treatment facilities. Seeing patients with the plastic name bracelets in their early days of recovery reminds me where I was not long ago. I see the tears of pain and gratitude on their faces and I pray that I never forget what it was like. I look forward to seeing these new members at meetings in the local community.

God directed me to a treatment facility. It certainly wasn’t something I had planned to do. God gave me the opportunity to meet AAs doing service. What a gift!

Many people say that treatment facilities are the easy way. My sponsor says, “It takes what it takes.” Many people resent the addicts getting mixed in with the alcoholics. I say “Look for the similarities not the differences.”

Many alcoholics have never used drugs, have never gone to prison, have not been prostitutes, have not lost everything. But we are all here because of our common problems, not our common virtues.

Dear GrapevineBlessings in disguiseI wanted to take time out to thank you for supplying Grapevines to people that are incarcerated. I have been participating in H&I pretty much since I got sober back in 1991. For the last 10 years or so I have had the honor to participate in meetings at Soledad Prison. I brought a few boxes of Grapevines and La Viñas to a meeting there yesterday and the men were so pleased. I watched as one man was reading one and pointed something out to the man sitting next to him and they were both nodding. I feel like I witnessed him breathing in whatever he just read. I can’t tell you how blessed I feel.

CNCA COMENTARIOS: CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS

The Santa Cruz Co. General Service District has a new service commitment—translating, folding and stapling Comentarios, the monthly California Northern Coastal Area newsletter for Spanish-Speaking members. In previous years, when the District handled the mailing for the English version, it was a simple “lick & stick” evening of volunteers working together for about an hour or two, but this project should go even quicker since there are only about 170 copies of Comentarios.

Please let Eric H. know if you can help with translation—English to Spanish—or the lick & stick assembly one night a month. [email protected]
