Hello Everybody,

It‟s Celebration Time - the Grampound Times

is 25 Years old!!!

Realising that for every Grampound Times

published (75 so far!) I have to provide an

Editor‟s introduction; I read the first Editor‟s

page in edition No. 1 and discovered that the views expressed regarding

our Doctor‟s Surgery are as appropriate to read now as they were then.

So as a small part of the anniversary I have printed below the Editor‟s

page from Edition No. 1……..

WELCOME

TO GRAMPOUND’S OWN NEWSPAPER.

Some months ago I was foolish enough to express my disappointment at

having missed a particular village event, for the simple reason that I didn‟t

know about it. Have you ever opened your mouth and succeeded in putting

your foot right into it? The answer to my disappointment was that what

we really needed in Grampound was a community newspaper -

EVERYONE could contribute - EVERYONE could receive a copy each

time it was printed, EVERYONE WOULD KNOW EVERYTHING -

EASY!

As this edition celebrates the 25th Birthday of The Grampound Times I

thought it appropriate also to look again at that first edition delivered in

the Summer of 1993. The little poem reproduced below was contained in

Edition No. 1 and I feel worth repeating in our 25th Birthday edition…….

HE WHO DARES WINS

If you think you are beaten - You are If you think you dare not - You don‟t

If you would like to win but think you can‟t - it‟s almost certain you won‟t If you think you‟ll lose - you‟ve lost

For out of this world we find Success begins with a person‟s will

It‟s all in the state of the mind.

Page 3: THE GRAMPOUND TIMES...2017/08/07  · Hello Everybody, It‟s Celebration Time - the Grampound Times is 25 Years old!!! Realising that for every Grampound Times published (75 so far!)

If you think you are outclassed - you are You‟ve got to think high to rise

You‟ve got to be sure of yourself Before you can ever win a prize

Life‟s battles don‟t always go To the stronger or faster man

But sooner or later the man who wins Is the one who thinks he can !

It will also be of interest to some of you I hope, to compare the content

of “The Grampound Times” in that 1st edition 25 years ago with what you

will find within its pages nowadays. For instance it‟s a pretty safe bet,

that like me you realise how fortunate we are here with the Medical

Practice that looks after us. The following item appeared in that first

Grampound Times 25 years ago……

GRAMPOUND’S MEDICAL SERVICES Historically, the independent practices in the area were united by Doctors Stewart and Eastcott. Later the practice was continued by Doctors Rentoul and McKensie. Like me, many older residents will remember the beautiful Grandfather clock that stood in the corner of the Surgery waiting room, at Tremethick with a tick so loud that it seemed on occasions to be the tick of doom! With the changes in population and advances in medical treatments, rapid changes have taken place within the practice, culminating in 1980 with the opening of the new surgery at Probus, and this followed the completion earlier of the new surgery at Mill Lane, Grampound. The present team of Doctors, Alan Reddington, Keith Round, John Tisdale and Vicki Bridger, have now been joined by a new Partner Howard Ball, who has a special interest in the subject of Asthmatic conditions. Fortunately for all of us the Doctors believe that the basis of a successful practice is co-operation between themselves and patients. Flexibility and responsiveness to our needs is therefore, the order of the day, and any of us who have experience of other practices, even a few miles away, will realise we have a wonderful deal at Grampound. In addition to general surgeries available with or without prior appointment, the practice runs anti-natal clinics, minor surgery clinic, and various health promotion clinics. As well as all of these, the team can arrange for District Nurse or Midwife services, Health Visitor services, and provides also its own Practice Nursing service.

DR. WILLIAM LINDSAY STEWART William was born on 26

th April 1901 at 17

Sanders Street, St. Cuthbert,

Edinburgh, to William and Margaret Stewart of Edinburgh. He obtained his medical qualifications at Glasgow University in 1923 and shortly afterwards was appointed to the post of locum tenens in Grampound. He stayed on as an assistant, entered into partnership, and subsequently succeeded to the practice and remained in it until he retired in 1971. He was very active in medico-political affairs and was treasurer of the Cornwall division of the B.M.A. for many years and, also served as chairman. In 1970, he was elected a Fellow of the B.M.A. He was the mainstay of the Cornwall Clinical Society and its treasurer for many years. With the introduction of the N.H.S. in 1948, he was appointed general practitioner anaesthetist to the St. Austell District Hospital, a post he held until 1966. During his time, he was a founder member of the advisory committee on postgraduate education for Bristol and the South-West, and was the G.P. member of the medical advisory committee to the South West Regional Hospital Board. Shortly after his arrival at Grampound he became associated with the St. John Ambulance Brigade and served as their divisional surgeon, area commissioner, and finally as deputy commissioner until his retirement. He was made a commander of the Order of St. John, and examiner to the china clay industry, to the railway, and to the police. He latterly became medical consultant to the English China Clays Company.

He was elected as Chairman of Cornwall County Council‟s Ambulance sub-committee, which coincided with the re-organisation of the Ambulance Service in 1948. In Civic affairs, Dr. Stewart was elected to the Grampound with Creed Parish Council on the 14

th March 1934, Vice Chairman on 13

th April 1938 and

Chairman on 18th June 1945, until his death. He was a member of St. Austell

Rural District Council, and on the re-organisation. He was also a member of the Coronation Joint Committee of Grampound and Probus. On the 7

th July 1926, he married Jane Nicholson Tomson at Cathcart,

Renfrewshire. Jane was born on 6th August 1900 at Monreath Road, Ingle

Nank, Shorelands, Glasgow, daughter of John and Annie Tomson (nee McGregor Muir). During their time in Grampound they lived at Penwyn House, which also served as the village surgery. In the 1930‟s Dr. Stewart built Tremethick with an adjoining surgery. It was the first house to be built in Grampound for over 50 years and continued as the village surgery until 1971, when the new surgery was opened in Mill Lane. Dr. Steward died at Tremethick on 7

th September 1975 and Jane died at

Tremethick on the 10th September 1991.

GRAMPOUND CARNIVAL

SUMMER 2017 CHAIRMANS REPORT Hello “Summer” readers of the Grampound Times Carnival planning is under full swing with the committee busy getting everything organised – scary how quick the last year has gone! The Grand Carnival Auction has taken place with a record amount of lots donated so a big thank you to anyone who kindly gave something to be auctioned off. A smaller turn out than usual which was a shame but we still had a good evening. Upcoming fundraisers include the Carnival Quiz happening at The Dolphin Inn on Tuesday 29th August and It's Not a Knockout happening on Wednesday 30th August on the village hall playing field. We hope to see most of you there and many thanks from the Committee for your continued support from our fundraisers throughout the year. A new fundraiser we are doing this year is a 4k fun run around Trewithen woods on Thursday 31

st August. This will be open to anyone aged 9+ and the

cost will be £6 per entry to include a bottle of water, a pasty and a medal. Registration will be open from 5.30pm in the village hall car park and the race will start at 6.30pm. This is our first year doing a fun run and as the title indicates it is meant to be FUN, so don‟t hesitate to come and have a go! Look out for leaflets coming through your doors soon and if you have any questions please contact me on the number below. Some other news going on in the Carnival world is that we as a committee are now taking on the running of the monthly Grampound Produce Market. This is something Bob Egerton has run for the past 8 years but due to other commitments is having to give up so we have decided to take over. For those who aren‟t aware the money raised from the sale of refreshments from the kitchen goes towards the Carnival fund which over a period of a year is quite sufficient to us, therefore we want to keep it running. The various cakes, quiches etc. that are on sale are made and donated by local villagers for us which we are very grateful for. However we are always open to having an extra cake or two so if you feel you would like to bake us something one month please let me know On behalf of the committee and the stall holders we would like to say a big thank you to Bob for all he has done for the market over those past 8 years, it wouldn‟t be what it is today without your continued hard work and we know you will be sorely missed.

Carnival day itself will be filled with the usual shenanigans of stalls, bouncy castles, food vans, laser tag and of course our village brewed Tremethick Ale bar. We will be having a 'happy hour' on the bar from 19.30-20.30 accompanied by the music of a jazz band and the evenings music will be provided by last year‟s local band The Shirts as we had such raving reviews about them. Please find below a list of the Carnival Classes: Don‟t forget to give our Facebook page a „like‟ – GRAMPOUND WITH CREED FETE & CARNIVAL And please, PLEASE pray for better weather than last year! Last season ended in delight with our Under-14 team winning the East Cornwall Youth League Under-14 Cup. We overcame local rivals Probus in a tight game but the victory was well-deserved with the team conducting themselves impeccably during the league‟s finals day. The boys were very pleased with their form, especially in the second half of the season, as we recorded excellent wins against all the better teams, including a resounding 2-0 victory over previously unbeaten and eventual champions Bodmin Town. The team finished as runners-up in the league which was a very satisfying conclusion to a very successful season and we look forward to our young players continuing to progress as they move towards men‟s football in a couple of years‟ time.

Our veterans’ team also had a very good season, finishing in its highest ever league position and beating some very good teams during the campaign. The 14-team league will be split into 2 divisions in the new season that begins in September and we will find ourselves in the higher of them, which means all games will be very tough. We will miss Darren Mortimer, a Grampound player for a few years, who finished as the league‟s top scorer by a long way in the Cornwall Veterans League. Darren has taken up a new job in Spain and we wish him and his young family well. Our two men‟s Duchy League teams are both pleased to maintain their places in Division 1 and Division 3 in the coming season. The reserves confirmed their status with a few league games left but the first team left it late, having to win at least 3 of their last 5 games. The firsts had, therefore, a rather nervy last few games but the team pulled through with some impressive wins, sending St Columb Major down to Division 2 instead of us. The season concluded with a dinner at St Austell Golf Club for our adult members where our end of season awards were presented and a buffet in the Village Hall for our youth players who also received their awards and were proud to show off their cup and medals. Readers may remember the furore in the press concerning the abuse of youngsters that went on at some professional clubs over many years. In light of this the Football Association tightened its rules concerning safeguarding and I am pleased to say that we are fully compliant with the enhanced regime and always have been but for some clubs it has been difficult to reach this stage. All our managers, coaches and committee members who have contact with players under the age of 18 have a Criminal Records check and have to successfully complete the FA Safeguarding course. Both of these have to be renewed every 3 years. Our key club officers also have to complete these for us to be able to run youth teams. The new season has already started and pre-season training and friendly matches have been going on since the end of June. Our league matches start on Wednesday 22

nd August when the first team entertains newly promoted

Godolphin from Newquay and this promises to be one of our toughest games of the season. The Duchy League is one of a small number of grassroots leagues that the FA has asked to trial the use of “temporary dismissals” (or the “sinbin”) for the offence of dissent instead of yellow cards (or “bookings”). We are fortunate to have received only 3 such yellow cards for dissent in the last few years and so it is unlikely to affect us too much but some clubs will certainly have a few players placed in the sinbin for 10 minutes during games. We are told that about a quarter of yellow cards nationally are for dissent and so we hope, like the FA, that the use of the sinbin will reduce dissent as it has done in some other team sports.

A very few years ago she showed delight visiting Grampound, and has always been an avid reader of the Grampound Times. Sadly she passed away on Christmas Day 2016, just one day after moving into a Nursing Home, and four days before her 86

th Birthday.

MR. WILLIAM PAUL BREWER, Died on the 17

th June 2017 at his home in St.

Austell. In his earlier life he farmed at Meadowside, Grampound Road, before moving to Grampound where he became the Parish Footpaths Officer and worked for many hours cutting the grass at our Parish Church at Creed. Paul has left three sons, Christopher, Timothy and Jeremy and numerous Grandchildren and great-Grandchildren.

A Coffee and Cake Morning was quickly organised and held at the home of Institute member ANNETTE EGERTON to meet the cost. CONGRATULATIONS to MRS, STELLA JULEFF and MISS ALICE JAMES, 2016/2017 joint winners of the Gwen Dawe Silver Salver. A very special mention for PC Andrew Webb Many readers will remember news of a horrific car crash in Par on 16

th August

last year which involved numerous casualties. One car had four teenage occupants, the other vehicle had two adults and a teenager. Police Constable Andrew Webb, elder son of Allan and Viv of Brambley Edge, was one of the first on the scene and he gave CPR to a young casualty for 40 minutes. It was extremely distressing and traumatic for the officers trying to save the girl‟s life and for the family at the scene. Unfortunately the girl‟s injuries were so severe that she passed away. Andrew then supported the family despite being physically and emotionally exhausted. At a recent ceremony at County Hall with Chief Constable Shaun Sawyer and Lord Lieutenant of Cornwall Colonel Edward Bolitho in attendance, Andrew was awarded with an official Chief Superintendent‟s Commendation for “Professionalism and Compassion”, the roads policing unit acknowledging how professionally the disturbing incident had been managed.

My apologies to RICHARD resident at No. 3

Tannery Lane, Grampound, who sent me the

article that follows for inclusion in the 1st

April (Spring) edition of “Grampound Times”,

unfortunately I didn‟t discover it in time, so, better late than

never, please enjoy it now.

HISTORY OF THE GRAMPOUND SAILING CLUB The Other day I was sitting at the bar of the Dolphin Inn when I couldn‟t help overhearing a conversation going on at a table behind me. The people concerned were two members of the Grampound Sailing Club and they were discussing the history of Grampound and its sailing club. I heard that the Romans came up the river to Grampound in shallow draught boats but I had no idea that King Henry VIII also came up the river. It would seem that after initiating the building of Pendennis Castle and the castle at St. Mawes he felt that this provided enough protection for him to establish a trading centre further up the river. He got as far as the Creed Inlet and then ran aground. In his anger and frustration he injured his leg getting ashore and was forced to spend several days at the local hostelry in Grampound. The ship was never refloated and eventually its timbers were liberated by the Grampound folk for building their houses. Interestingly some of the timbers from Henry‟s wrecked ship were used in the roof of the Church at Creed where they can be seen to this day. The other evidence of Henry‟s visit to Grampound was that the hostelry where King Henry stayed was called The Kings Leg for many years before being renamed The Dolphin The story of how the local pub changed its name from The Kings Leg to the Dolphin is key to the foundation of the Grampound Sailing Club. Before the weir at Tregony was built on the remains of the old Roman harbour wall the Fal was tidal to the town of Grampound. This meant that shallow draught craft could navigate right up to Grampound on the tide. Fish were also very abundant and there exists a very old painting of children fishing from the bridge at Grampound. On one occasion a large bottle nosed dolphin came right up to Grampound in pursuit of otters, a delicacy much valued by them. Focused on the pursuit of otters the dolphin did not seem to realise the dangers of such a trip. It found out that it could not turn around to return down river. The dolphin became distressed. This drew the attention of the children at the school. They were so upset that they prevailed upon their parents to widen the river by the school and eventually a very happy dolphin was able to turn and swim back down river. For many years Dolphin Day was celebrated

Page 17: THE GRAMPOUND TIMES...2017/08/07  · Hello Everybody, It‟s Celebration Time - the Grampound Times is 25 Years old!!! Realising that for every Grampound Times published (75 so far!)

in Grampound but these days only the name of the local pub, The Dolphin remains to remind us of the event. What does remain, however, is the wide pool dug to allow the dolphin to turn round. This pool is the slip and yacht storage for the Grampound Sailing Club. The foundation stone of the complex now housing the Sailing Club was laid by a very famous mariner, Admiral Fitzroy who was the former captain of HMS Beagle. HMS Beagle was the ship in which Darwin sailed around the world formulating his theory of the Origin of the Species. After this epic voyage Admiral Fitzroy was commissioned by the admiralty to survey the Isles of Scilly. He was on his way there when a storm forced him to anchor for shelter in St. Mawes Bay. Unfortunately the storm caused Fitzoy‟s ship to drag her anchor and she was blown up river until finishing up on Tregony Weir. It took several weeks to complete repairs on the stranded ship and whilst this work was being undertaken Admiral Fitzroy stayed at the Dolphin Inn, the hostelry at Grampound. Reflecting on the storm that had caused him and his ship so many problems he decided to design a storm warning system for mariners and this was the start of Meteorology. Most of us have heard the daily shipping forecasts on the radio, well this was designed by Admiral Fitzroy whilst at Grampound awaiting repair of his ship. Initially the forecast included a measure of wind strength and this was given as Grampound Force 6 or 7 etc. It is a bit of a shame as the word Grampound has now been dropped and it has been shortened to Force 6 or 7 etc. The Grampound Sailing Club has a boat and this can be seen moored beside the slip in the Dolphin Pool. She is called the “April Kensa” and is a true reflection of the aims of “The Grampound Sailing Club.

I should perhaps have mentioned before that when

forwarding his article to me, RICHARD kindly referred to

the quality of my personal supply of whisky. I confirmed to

him my thanks for his comment, but having read his article

about The Grampound Sailing Club I feel sure that his tots

are even better than mine!!!

Keyboard shortcuts everyone should know!! Using keyboard shortcuts can greatly increase your productivity, reduce repetitive strain, and help you keep focused. For example, to copy text, you can highlight text and press the Ctrl + C shortcut. The shortcut is faster than moving your hands from the keyboard, highlighting with the mouse, choosing copy from the file menu, and then returning to the keyboard. The following shortcuts are recommended to you to memorise and use: Ctrl+C or Ctrl+Insert and Ctrl+X Both Ctrl+C and Ctrl+Insert will copy highlighted text or a selected item. If you want to cut an item instead of copying it, press Ctrl+X. This action removes the text or item and stores it in the clipboard for you, rather than just copying it to the clipboard while leaving the original behind. Ctrl+V or Shift+Insert Both the Ctrl+V and Shift+Insert will paste the text or object that‟s stored on the clipboard. On Apple computers, use Cmd+V instead. Ctrl+F Opens the Find Field, which allows you to search the text currently displayed in any programme that supports it. For example, Ctrl+F can be used in your Internet browser to find text on the current page. Press Ctrl+F now to open the Find in your browser and search for “shortcut” to display each time shortcut is mentioned on this page. On Apple computers, use Cmd+F to find. Ctrl+S While working on a document or other file in almost every programme, pressing Ctrl+S saves that file. Use this shortcut key frequently if you‟re working on anything important in case an error happens, you lose power, or any other issues that could cause you to work since the last save. On Apple computers Cmd+SA

Alt+Tab or Ctrl+Tab Pressing Alt+Tab switches between open programmes moving forward. For example, if you have your browser window open and other programmes running in the background press and hold Alt and then press the tab key to cycle through each open programme. On Apple computers instead of using the Alt key use the Command (Cmd) key. For example, Cmd+Tab to switch between open programmes. Bonus Tip: Press Ctrl+Tab to switch between tabs in a programme. For example, if you have multiple tabs open in your Internet browser, press Ctrl+Tab to switch between them. Bonus Tip: Adding the Shift key to Alt+Tab or Ctrl+Tab moves backward. For example, if you are pressing Alt+Tab and pass the programme you want to use, press Alt+Shift+Tab to move back to that programme. Bonus Tip: Windows Vista, 7, 8, and 10 users can also press the Windows Key+tab to switch through open programmes in a full screenshot of the window.

“THE HAM FIELD”

GRAMPOUND’S NEWEST LEISURE PROJECT Within the care of the Grampound Village Hall and Recreation Ground Trust, and since receiving its initial grant from the Grampound Community Benefit Fund, development of the site has gone ahead at great speed. HELEN BUNT, Chair to the Trust, together with her husband IRVIN, have ensured that very visible signs of progress are apparent for us all to see. Picnic Tables and seating together with a splendid circular building, and access path around the site enabling easy access to the area of the nature lake, makes a very pleasant place to visit. At the time of writing this article, in early April, another huge step has been taken, with the planting around the boundary of around 500 trees! How was such a massive task achieved you may ask, and the answer is HELEN’S persuasive voice which resulted in an excellent turnout of residents, all desiring to see the new Ham‟s Field facility completed. The work was scheduled to be completed over a Saturday and Sunday morning, but such was the spirit and effort put into the forks and shovels that the Sunday event was cancelled!! Included in the working party were the Abbott family whose daughters MOLLY and JESSICA took charge of the mornings work - Oh! yes, in the photograph they are taking a well-earned rest.!!

Can this really be true??

A CORNISH GIRL Written by A Cornish Girl!

Down at their local three recently married men were bragging about how they had given their new wives duties to perform. Terry had married an American girl and boasted that he had told his wife to do the dishes, clean the house from top to bottom every day and have a meal waiting for him when he got home from work. He said it took a couple of days, but on the third day he did come home to a clean house and his meal was waiting. James had married an Australian girl and declared that he had given his wife orders to do all the cleaning, wash the dishes, do the shopping and have a meal ready for him when he got home from work. He told them it took a couple of days but he could see a marked improvement. The third man had married a Cornish girl. She was told to keep the house clean, wash the dishes, do the shopping, mow the lawn and have a meal waiting for him when he arrived home from work. The first day he didn‟t see anything nor the second day. By the third day however, the swelling around his eyes had gone down just enough for him to be able to see out of his left eye, get himself a bite to eat, load the washing machine and call a gardener to cut his lawn!!!

interesting project. The following

has been sent to me by Tregony

resident Des Mennear. Whilst the

COFFEE WITH DONNA On the morning of Tuesday 5

th September, from10.30am, the Tregony Bible

Christian Chapel, which is located opposite the Londis shop in Fore Street, will be the venue for the monthly coffee morning with Donna Birrell from BBC Radio Cornwall. This is one of several being held across the County in conjunction with the Transformation Cornwall organisation which aims to strengthen and support faith based social action in Cornwall One of the issues regularly encountered is that many people living in rural, isolated areas, have little access to, or knowledge of what is happening in their local community, particularly some of the informal support and activities that are happening on a regular basis. Therefore, Transformation Cornwall is working with Donna to use “Coffee with Donna” as a way to promote regular events that are happening in different areas across Cornwall.

The aim is through Radio Cornwall to encourage people to come along and meet Donna as well as promoting local events and the hard work of the volunteers The members of the Tregony Seniors‟ Club are delighted to transfer the first of their regular two monthly coffee mornings, on this occasion, to the Chapel and will be working along with members of the Chapel to make the event a great success. Anyone from your area and beyond will be most welcome to attend what promises to be a wonderful occasion. Just one thing.. if you feel able to provide buns or cakes or biscuits, please bring them with you! For further details please give Des Mennear a call on 01872 530357

We are having a busy and exciting year…

THANK YOU – THANK YOU – THANK YOU To those of you who generously donated money following our appeal for funds for the restoration project on the Grampound Union Banner in the last edition of the GT. It was a wonderful response. Our banner is now

on the conservator‟s table in Bristol and will be displayed when we get it back. After the last edition of the GT our esteemed editor asked me why I hadn‟t explained more about the Grampound Union Society – easy answer – we couldn‟t find anything about it and then BINGO, I found this in a collection of material handed in by Barbara Lobb. A very old folder full of jottings by R N H Bennett yielded a handwritten copy of a booklet which states „first page of booklet in the possession of W L P Croggon.‟

Our first real evidence, apart from the banner itself, that the society existed for some time. This booklet was printed in 1851 and we hope it is with the Croggon papers at the County Record Office. We are looking for it.

We recently had a visit from an American family who have relatives living in the village. This was the second visit that Grandfather Hugh had made with different members of his family and he met up with a relative that he didn‟t know about following a chance conversation between me and Emma and Elliott Wells. He was so pleased to meet a cousin still living here. We have also had a visit from a member of the Tiddy family following their family history and a group of Americans here on a visit with The Friendship Force. And this email arrived earlier in the summer; I have just spent a wonderful Sunday looking through your Photo collection that has brought back many happy memories and names long forgotten. My Mother, Marjorie WAKE, nee DRAKE was a 1st Cousin 1x removed of Richard John JAMES who on two one year occasions gave us refuge from the bombings in London. Initially we were both part of the 1939 Register for Grampound so must have lived at Woodbine Villa during 1930/40 before returning to London only to return probably during 1943 as I attended the village school during 1943/44. I have so many wonderful memories of the kindnesses shown to us by the James Family and the life experiences I gained living on the Farm during those times That eventually led to a career in Museology starting with the National museums of Canada and ending in 1997 after 29 years as the Director of the RCMP Centennial Museum, now with a new building known as the RCMP Heritage Centre.

I thought that the attached photos might be of use to you, as sadly, although there are many photos showing Woodbine Villa, There are none of the last

JAMES family to live there.

Malcolm Wake, Regina, Saskatchewan, CANADA.

Malcolm and I have had a long email conversation and if any of you are related to the James family and have any photos or remember this gentleman please get in touch [email protected]

The Limes Project is gaining pace and we hope to submit a bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund shortly. I am very pleased to announce that Jean Hicks and Michael and Rita Hearn, members of Ron‟s family, have very kindly donated his slide collection to the Heritage Centre along with a quantity of other memorabilia to do with the history of the village. A huge thank you to them. It is a collection of local importance and will be called The Ron Hicks Memorial Collection. We haven‟t counted the slides but reckon there are more than 3000. Some of them many of you will have seen at Ron‟s famous (or infamous) slide shows but there are also many that have rarely been seen. Not all of them are relevant to the village and we are in the process of sorting them. They will be digitised to a professional standard worthy of the value of this important collection before being loaded onto the Grampound photo archive. Slides to do with other villages will be passed on to other museums for them to add to their collections. We aim to have a commemorative slide show (or two) once this task is complete.

And last but not least we are now an accredited museum along with the likes of Truro Museum, Wheal Martyn and Falmouth Maritime Museum. How good is that for our „little‟ venture? Well done to all involved in the Heritage Centre, the Parish Council and particularly past members of the HC Management Team for the work that got us to this point.

PHILIP’S TOP TIPS FOR LIFE How to make yourself more noticeable. It‟s simple if you want to get noticed, wear red. I pulled this trick off the other day, at a village event there was someone in particular that I wanted to talk to. I wore red and I was one of the first people they came to talk to. How to improve will power when on a diet A picture is worth a thousand words. Take a photo of yourself from behind, and put it on the fridge. Every time you are tempted to eat take a look at the photo. Little pickers wear bigger knickers (and I‟ve just gone up a size) How to remember to do pelvic floor exercises. This is just as important for men as woman, I always do mine when queuing up at the post office. Let‟s hope it pays off! What to do on a first date. The best first date I have heard about was when my best friend was taken to the local theme park. They said it was brilliant as they were doing things and having a laugh and it took away the nerves and awkward silences. Bowling, while cheesy has the same effect. The cinema is a definite no no, how can you get to know someone sitting in the dark in silence. Plus I once had a very embarrassing experience with a box of chocolates on my lap, and hands looking for them in the dark! How to deal with a partner who seems too careful with money How to deal with them? Accept this part of them because they will not change. Financial habits rarely change. Don‟t think that anything you do will change their behaviour and don‟t even try unless you enjoy knocking your head against a brick wall. Financial compatibility is one of the key areas that couples should explore completely before marriage. It‟s a real relationship killer. How to deal with finding naked photos of your partner’s ex-wife among his belongings. Don‟t you have old love letters? A few photos of your exes? Photos with hearts drawn around the men you liked. Lighten our Darkness! The Village Hall Committee have decided to spotlight the failing lighting systems in the Village Hall. One by one the lights in the hall have been going out and if nothing is done we will soon be down to offering torches to

all members of the audience. We are always looking for volunteers to help out but the efforts of the village hall committee should make it unnecessary to recruit volunteer usherettes. The management committee set out this year with an ambitious scheme to upgrade all the lighting in our main hall, both ceiling and performance lighting. The current costly tubular ceiling lighting and parcan stage lights have been giving notice for some time and are coming to the end of their life span. (Currently at least a third of the lights are not working and some refuse to turn off when asked!). So, we have been busy fund raising for LED replacements and have achieved a total of £9315! Grampound Community Fund £6000 and Halls for Cornwall Capital Grants £3315. We have also decided to use some of our unallocated reserves to complete both schemes over the next few months. In doing so we will significantly improve functionality and the long term sustainability of the hall. This upgrade will reduce our carbon footprint by 3.2 tonnes per annum and reduce the long-term running costs of the building. To complement the spanking new lighting systems we would like to redecorate and refurbish the entrance to the hall and the foyer. Not a big job if we can get volunteers to help us out. Volunteers are the life blood of everything that happens in and around the hall. The constant flow of people who want to give a hand is what keeps all the activities going. Grampound is a lovely community to live in. It grows out of its history with activities which reflect the past and the new. To keep doing this it needs people from the village to help out where they can. If you would like to help then a suitable task can always be found for you in terms of time available and ability. Perhaps the old saying “Don‟t think about it, do It.” applies here!

Please ring and get yourself recycled as a volunteer. Please contact Richard Pryor on 01726 882920

GRAMPOUND GARDEN

CLUB Once again carnival time is upon us and I hope you have all enjoyed what summer the weather Gods have allowed. Actually the mixed weather has proved quite good for most gardens, enough rain to help thing grow and enough sunshine to enjoy them.

During the summer the Garden club has enjoyed visits to three wonderful gardens. Firstly Boconnoc with its lovely woodland garden, then to the spectacular valley gardens at Trenython Manor, and finally to Hidden Valley Gardens at Treesmill which were a credit to their owners and looked even better than our previous visit four years ago. The Garden Club Summer BBQ in June was a great success and our grateful thanks go to Trish and Chris for being such wonderful hosts. Following our usual August break we start our autumn events with a visit from Wella Chubb who is the senior gardener at Trelissick Gardens. The Grampound Garden Club meets at the Village Hall at 7.30PM on the second Wednesday of the month. Any prospective new members are welcome to come along, gardeners and non-gardeners alike. Membership is just £5 per year plus £2 per meeting attended (or why not pop along to one of our talks as a guest on a one of basis of just £2) – Good value for lots of advice and good company.

Grampound Open Gardens On a grey day in June, 22 enthusiastic gardeners opened their gardens to help raise money to repair the bell tower of St Nuns Church. Luckily it wasn‟t actually raining and over 100 people made their way around the gardens - although we think no one managed to get to all 22 but all had at least some visitors with the most visiting the new gardens in the tannery Estate and those on Fore Street. The gardens were very varied, small, large, cottage, woodland, new and old so there was plenty of variety from which to choose.

In addition, cream teas were served at St Nuns, considerably adding to the money raised. To add to this, the Heritage Centre put on an exhibition of photographs of Grampound Gardens over the years. There were more visitors to this than they have ever had on one day to the Centre. The day was completed by a BBQ for helpers. A Celtic Evensong was held on a Sunday later to celebrate the event. This proved popular and may become part of our regular services celebrating gardens and our care of the environment. Overall the day was voted a great success and the magnificent sum of £900 was raised towards the repair fund.

Our very Grateful thanks to all who helped JANE SLOAN

GRAMPOUND WITH CREED SCHOOL

Once again the end of the academic year is nearly upon us and we are preparing to say goodbye to our Year 6 pupils. This has been another extremely busy term with lots of successes to celebrate and people to thank. Sports day

We had a lovely sunny afternoon for our school sports day. The children took part in team building activities in the morning and races in the afternoon. The whole event was much enhanced by the addition of painted tracks which were very kindly provided by Mr Webb. Many thanks to him for doing this free of charge and also for cutting the grass for us in preparation for the event.

Performances The children have presented two wonderful performances this half term which we all enjoyed… Lostledan Class‟ dance interpretation of a traditional Cornish Tale – „Peter and the Piskies‟ was truly beautiful! Many thanks to Miss Molden, Sarah Waller and Roger Luxton for making this happen.

The KS2 children have had another triumph with their production of „Cinderella Rockafella‟ which took place in the village hall. The play was quick paced and fun with some fantastic singing and dancing. Thanks to Mrs Tringham for bringing the whole thing together with such professionalism and Miss Molden for the wonderful dances.

Thanks too to all the staff and parents who have helped with these performances as many hands really do make light(er) work. Bowling We would like to thank the Bowling Club who have given up their time this term to teach our children to bowl; we know that the children have enjoyed this experience. A new year in September We would like to remind those of you in Grampound with young children that we have a „stay and play‟ session in the

village hall every Thursday from 9.15 to 10.45. All are welcome to attend and there is no charge. We also have spaces in our Nursery and can provide free nursery hours as well as top up sessions at very competitive prices. Please call in if you require any further information. All of us at Grampound with Creed School would like to wish everyone a restful and happy summer.

Dear Friends September is when we celebrate harvest. Our Harvest Service will be on Sunday 8 October at 11am at Creed Church . The Harvest Supper will be held in the Village Hall 7 for 7.30pm Tuesday 13 October. We hope by then all is safely gathered in. In fact, celebrating Harvest Festival in church is a relatively recent practice. It was originally a pagan festival although there were Harvest Festivals in the Old Testament. It was only in 1843 that the Rev Robert Hawker, from Morwenstow Cornwall, started the trend of holding a service, offering communion bread made from the first cut of corn. It then developed to be an afternoon of games on the Rectory Garden followed by a service in Church and then concluded with a Harvest Supper. The idea was to draw the whole village together to thank God for the Harvest.

I do hope you will be part of our celebrations this year.

Your friend and Rector

ANDREW

th June was hugely successful, thank you to the

22 garden owners who agreed to open their doors (garden gates) for the afternoon. We would also like to give a big thank you to everyone who supported the BBQ at the Tannery Field on 15

th July. The funds raised from

both events would go towards the badly needed repair work needed at St Nuns Church. Our next social event with be our produce stall at the carnival and we will look forward to seeing you all there. On Friday 8

th September 2017, three brave ladies CHRISTINE TONKS,

CAROLINE TETLEY and CHRISTINE MICKLEWRIGHT will walk the 28 difficult miles from Padstow to Fowey following the ancient Saints Way path. This will be a Sponsored effort to provide financial help to the work of our local Churches, both of which are currently very in need of financial help with costly repair and regeneration projects about to be commenced. All sponsored money generated from the walk will be divided equally between the needs of St. Nun‟s Church and our Parish Church of St. Crida at Creed. The Parochial Church Council very much hope that you will be generous in your support for this event.

Dear Reader,

Your “Grampound Times” is appealing to you for a

little help. Each edition costs around £400 to print

and deliver - that‟s £1,200 per year. The support

of our advertisers and occasional donations from

readers keeps the magazine afloat.

For many years the Committee have contributed to

the fund by running a BOTTLE STALL at the

Carnival Day Garden Fete, and this has proved to be a

successful way of helping the funds.

This is where I hope you will help. Bottles of every

size, shape and colour makes the stall attractive and

exciting to the many folk who gather to support us.

WILL YOU HELP PLEASE BY GIVING A BOTTLE, OR

MORE THAN ONE IF YOU LIKE.

COLLECTION POINTS FOR BOTTLES ARE:-

WITH Philip Freer, “Manderley” Old Hill, or when

you see him in the village

WITH Roger Paynter, “Treminnis” Barteliver Hill

WITH Vivien Webb, “Brambley Edge, Off Fore

Street.

In anticipation of your kind support, many thanks

from the Grampound Times Management Committee.

GRAMPOUND WOMEN‟S

INSTITUTE

SUMMER REPORT Once again, since the last issue of the Grampound Times, the ladies of the WI have been busy. We have visited Caerhayes Castle and gardens, we have walked and had lunch at Heligan, some of us went to the Lizard to visit the most southerly farm on the mainland, we have visited Sticker and Ladock WIs and a visit to the Federation half yearly meeting at the Hall for Cornwall was enjoyed by those who attended. Visits were also made to the Royal Cornwall Show. Our membership has increased slightly and we welcome Sue and Ann. We entered two teams in the Inter WI Quiz, both teams managed to score a creditable forty three and a half points, (with no collusion) which made us joint fourth out of well over twenty teams. At the end of June a Coffee Morning was organised by ANNETTE to raise funds to buy replacement electrodes (pads) for the village defibrillator. (More about that elsewhere in the GT). Beautiful cakes were set up for us to make our choice. One in particular became the source of conversation and if you didn‟t make it to the event you can still bake the cake yourself and enjoy! Here are the Recipe and preparation instructions for you: Janet’s Blueberry Lemon Cake 2 large eggs 210g (1 cup) granulated sugar 8oz (1 cup) sour cream ½ cup light olive or corn oil 1tspn vanilla extract 260g (2 cups) all-purpose flour 1/2 tspn salt 2 tspn baking powder 1 lemon zest and juice (divided) ½ tblspn corn flour 16oz fresh blueberries Icing sugar to dust (If using frozen blueberries thaw in fridge drain of excess drain of excess use 1 tblspn corn flour and no lemon juice)

Rest 20 mins then remove from tin Dust with icing sugar if liked Our monthly meeting in May saw us debate contamination of the oceans with micro plastic and the alleviation of loneliness. These will be the National Federation‟s campaigns for 2017. In June we had a talk by President Hilary‟s husband Chris. He told us of his time as a GP in Yorkshire. Our July meeting was in the garden of 3 Oak Vale, where Hilary treated us to a splendid summer supper. At that meeting we welcomed back a lapse member, Nance and welcomed two visitors. In August we had a treat and went out for Afternoon Tea at The Cornwall Hotel. Plans are well under way for the Carnival and Fete in September – so, watch this space! Although our numbers have gone up we would still like to recruit more members, so if you would like more information please feel free to contact Hilary (our President) on 882220, Pat on 882594 or Phil (the secretary) on 885015 or [email protected]. We met at the village hall on the first Tuesday of the month at 7.00pm. You are more than welcome to come as a guest, with no obligation.

PAUL’S FAVOURITE FLAPJACK RECIPE Paul (aka Guinness) has helped for years in our garden as he does for others in the village. In our garden he works hard repairing the damage caused by our two dogs chasing each other around and around and a good job he does too. Paul likes his fresh coffee and a piece of cake providing it does not have any currants or sultanas and he is especially fond of this flapjack recipe. Last week Paul‟s nephew, Liam was cutting the grass and doing an excellent job with the edging when I took out the coffee and flapjack and I was made up when Liam said it was “bang on!” I just hope that is a compliment! Oven temperature 160 degrees centigrade Grease a Swiss roll tin 10x15 ins for this recipe or 9x13 ins for half quantities Ingredients (this recipe can be halved for a smaller quantity) 12oz (350g) butter (the Trewithen Cornish butter in the village store is perfect for this) 8oz (225g) soft brown sugar (caster is fine as is Demerara but I like the toffee flavour of soft brown or muscovado). 1lb (450g) porridge oats or jumbo oats. My preference is Quaker Oats as I think it‟s a bit thicker than other brands. 1 tbs golden syrup tsp vanilla extract good pinch of salt Other fillings optional: I use chopped soft ready-to-eat dried apricots and chopped hazelnuts (favoured by Paul) but other fillings could include chocolate chip, walnuts, raisins and even slices of banana. In a large saucepan melt the butter, golden syrup and vanilla extract. Stir from time to time as it melts and it will become toffee like. Add any dried fruit at this stage and allow it to swell a little in the butter mixture. Add the oats, salt and any nuts or other ingredients (if using chocolate let the oats mixture cool a little). When the mixture is well stirred together spread into the prepared tin. Bake in the oven for 25-30 minutes or when the mixture becomes golden and it has caramelised around the edges. Remove from oven and leave to stand for 10 minutes before making cutting marks in oblongs or squares. When nearly cool carefully remove with a cake slice and place on a wire rack. If a few crumbs are left in the tin the cook can eat them with a cup of tea!

Calling all Plymouth Argyle supporters…

Here is a little gem from the pen of Cornishman DAVID

PROWSE - I dare you not to laugh…….. “Father had a quote for every occasion. On one of our excursions to Plymouth for an Argyle match, my little A35 Austin car developed radiator problems which made it necessary to stop every few miles to beg water and top up. When we finally made it back home in the evening darkness, Mother came running out to enquire if all was well. We‟ve done all right, said Father. We‟ve used 5 gallons of petrol, 500 gallons o‟ water an‟ made more stops than the Western National bus. We‟d a‟ bin better off with a camel!””

I love this poem composed by our Cornish Poet DAVID

PROWSE, which I have taken from his third collection of

verses “Call Of The Wild”. Nowadays Film Centres are plush

and elaborate places, but David clearly had in mind with this

poem the sort of cinema oldies like me remember!!

SATURDAY NIGHT AT THE REGAL It was Saturday night at the Regal, my persuasions had reaped their reward, I had Alma beside me for “Gone With The Wind”, and four hours of heaven

assured. Oh, I‟d waited so long for this moment, sat next to this damsel of dreams

In the back row where passion would smoulder and burn, to outrival events on the screen.

For a while, I controlled my impatience, then I tweaked at the curls on her head,.

She turned with a whisper like gravel on glass, “Go and get me some popcorn,” she said.

Well, whatever my angel requested, was hers upon instant command, So I hastened to fetch her desired little treat, which she tenderly snatched from

my hand.

It was clear that despite all her virtues, she was one not accustomed to share, The popcorn was opened and gobbled and crunched, with a glazed and

inscrutable stare. “Good film!,” I remarked, leaning closer, but her mouth was too busy to speak,

I was tempted to kiss her but couldn‟t keep pace with the rise and the fall of her cheek.

“Oh Alma!,” I said, “You‟re so lovely!” as she cleaned out the bag with a lick, “You what?” she was deaf to all thoughts except one, “I could do with a drink

on a stick!” By the time they‟d cremated Atlanta, sheer habit dictated my route,

Whole armies could march on what Alma consumed, and provision their horses, to boot.

So the drain on my funds was relentless, until even my bus-fare had gone. In the film, warring factions were dropping like flies, but Alma, like Scarlett,

whined on. At the end of it all, I decided, Rhett Butler was my kind of man,

“I‟m hungry!,” she moaned. “Alma dear,” I intoned, “Quite frankly, I don‟t give a damn.”
