Christ’s Teaching

Jesus never once said,

“thus saith the LORD,” which was the highest thing a man or prophet of God

could say.

If they were wrong they were stoned!

Instead, Jesus said …

“but I say unto you.”

Christ Instituted ObedienceBe subject to every ordinance of man for the Lord’s sake

…as sent by Him (1Pe.2:13,14)

Wives be in subjection unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord … as the church is subject to Christ, so let

wives also be to their husbands (Eph.5:22)

Children obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right. Honor thy father and mother (Eph.6:1-3)

Servants, obey in all things them that are your masters … not with eye-service …but in singleness of heart,

fearing the Lord (Col.3:22)

Know them that labor among you, and are over you in the Lord … esteem them highly in love (1Th.5:12)

Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honor (1Tim.5:17)

Page 18: The Gospels: God Speaks in His Son Matthew – Mark – Luke - John

Leading Captive Every Thought …Into the obedience of the Christ (2Cor.10:5).

Never think independently of Christ.

Accept God’s thoughts.

Rebellion is to behave against God’s revealed will:

Whether it is right in the sight of God

to hearken unto you rather than unto God,

judge ye (Acts 4:19).

Page 19: The Gospels: God Speaks in His Son Matthew – Mark – Luke - John

The Method - -The Incarnation

At this point in the history of redemption, God doesn’t speak

through a man

He becomes a man to demonstrate and speak the truth to man.

This is called the Incarnation.

Theo-anthropos (God/man)

Page 20: The Gospels: God Speaks in His Son Matthew – Mark – Luke - John

John 1:14And the Word became flesh and dwelt among

us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and

truth.

Philippians 2:5-11Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God,did not consider it robbery to be equal with

God,but made Himself of no reputation … coming in

the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even

the death of the cross.

Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name … Jesus

Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

The Response Required

-Receive Christ for salvation.

To know God and possess eternal life, we must receive and

follow Him (John 1:12-13).

“But to as many as received Him, He gave the right to become sons of God, to those who believe in His name: who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but born of God.”

Page 24: The Gospels: God Speaks in His Son Matthew – Mark – Luke - John

Our Response Includes:

1. Continuing in His Word (Jn 8:31) "If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed.”

2. Loving as He Loved (Jn 13:34-35) “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you.”

3.Taking Up Our Cross (Lk 9:23) "If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me.”

Page 25: The Gospels: God Speaks in His Son Matthew – Mark – Luke - John

Our Response Includes:

4.Bearing Fruit (John 15:8) “By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples.”

5.Putting Christ Above Relationships "If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple. And whoever does not bear his cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple.

Christ’s teachings are seed thoughts for the Epistles.

For An Example of Jesus’ Seed Thoughts

(Compare John 15:12 with 1Corinthians 13:1-7)

The Seed-Thought Principle:This is My commandment, that you love one another

as I have loved you. John 15:12

The Specific Full Meaning:“Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy;

love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked,

thinks no evil; does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all

things, endures all things.Love never fails.”

The Need The epistles were written to

those who:

Heard the gospel and believed unto salvation “In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom

also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise.” (Ephesians 1:13)

Were filled with the Spirit “…who is the guarantee of our inheritance

until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory.” (Ephesians 1:13b-14) and had the

gifts of the Spirit “So that you come short in no gift, eagerly waiting for the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ.” (1 Corinthians

1:7)

Were witnessing in power “For from you the word of the Lord has sounded forth, not only in Macedonia and Achaia, but

also in every place. Your faith toward God has gone out, so that we do not need to say anything.”

(1 Thessalonians 1:8)

Page 35: The Gospels: God Speaks in His Son Matthew – Mark – Luke - John

The Need is twofold:

1. We need to understand the essential nature of salvation, to know our provision in Christ.

2. We need to know how to work it out in life and service, how to possess

and use our provision in Christ.

The Epistles are written in a personal letter format, explaining the Christian life and

responsibilities.

Page 36: The Gospels: God Speaks in His Son Matthew – Mark – Luke - John

The Content

The foundational concept of the Epistles is that salvation is anchored in a relationship

with a risen Savior. Life is in Christ, not in us.

The source of this new life is not in the believer, as he might naturally think, but is in Jesus Christ. The believer must learn that he/she is united with Him.

Romans 7:4 Therefore, my brethren, you also have become dead to the law through the body of Christ, that you may be married to another--to Him who was

raised from the dead, that we should bear fruit to God.

Page 37: The Gospels: God Speaks in His Son Matthew – Mark – Luke - John

The Content

“In Christ” is found throughout Paul’s Epistles. This is used to capture the truth of

our union with Christ.

Page 38: The Gospels: God Speaks in His Son Matthew – Mark – Luke - John

In Christ we are…

Justified

• By the Grace of God. “Being justified freely by His grace through the redemption in Christ” (Tit.3:7).

• By the Blood of Jesus. “Being now justified by His blood” (Ro.5:9).

• By Faith. “Being therefore justified by faith, we have peace with God” (Ro.5:1).

Page 39: The Gospels: God Speaks in His Son Matthew – Mark – Luke - John

in Christ we are…

RegeneratedThe new birth is a divine regeneration. We

are literally made alive spiritually by the Spirit of God. God also imparts to us

a new nature and thus we are a new creation in Christ.

According to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing

of the Holy Spirit, Titus 3:5

Page 40: The Gospels: God Speaks in His Son Matthew – Mark – Luke - John

in Christ we are…

Adopted

• Huiothesia means to be placed in the position of an adult son.

Galatians 4:4-7 God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under

the law, to redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption as sons. And

because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, "Abba, Father!" Therefore you are no longer a slave but a son, and if

a son, then an heir of God through Christ.

Ephes. 1:5 having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus

Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will,

Page 41: The Gospels: God Speaks in His Son Matthew – Mark – Luke - John

In Christ we are…

Sanctified

Sanctification: to be set apart unto God.

We are set apart positional.

Hebrews 10:10 By that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ

once for all.

We are to be set apart practically

1Thes. 4:3-4 For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you should abstain from sexual immorality; that each of you should know how to

Philip. 1:6 being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it

until the day of Jesus Christ;

The Believer is United With ChristAs Adam and his descendants, so Christ and

His descendants, are united.

As a husband and wife, as a vine and its branches,

as a head and the body, and as a building and its foundation,

we are in union with Him.

The Method

Personal letters to “living epistles.”

Explanatory letters developing truths that are part of the life in Christ.

God is concerned with developing the life of the believer, and growth into

maturity.

This method trains the minds and hearts so that truth becomes our

own.

Page 66: The Gospels: God Speaks in His Son Matthew – Mark – Luke - John

The Method

Letters involve an orderly thought process that invites you to “think with” someone rather

than a simple authoritative announcement.

A simple authoritative announcement, like the Prophets gave, may settle a particular issue, but may not necessarily train their minds and renew their thought processes by making it

their very own truth.

If we live in the Spirit we are to also walk by the Spirit.
