LETTERS FROM POPE FRANCIS AND BISHOP MARCUS Printed letters from Pope Francis and Bishop Marcus relating to abuse within the Roman Catholic church are available at the back of church today. Update: As these were all taken last week a few more have been printed.

FIRST SATURDAY DEVOTION

From Sat 6th Oct 2018 and every 1st Saturday of each month, all Catholics are encouraged to observe the First Saturday Devotion requested by Our Blessed Lady - wherever Day Mass is celebrated in the Diocese of Leeds. The devotion is made up of Confession, Holy Communion, five decades of the Rosary and keeping Our Lady company for fifteen minutes while meditating on the fifteen mysteries of the Rosary, with the intention of making reparation to Our Lord Jesus Christ.

MASS OF CANONISATION On Sunday 14th October 2018 the Holy Father will preside at the Mass of Canonisation of seven individuals - Paul VI (Giovanni Battista Montini), Supreme Pontiff; Oscar Arnulfo Romero Galdámez, archbishop of San Salvador, martyr; Francesco Spinelli, diocesan priest, founder of the Institute of the Sisters Adorers of the Blessed Sacrament; Vincenzo Romano, diocesan priest; Maria Katharina Kasper, founder of the Institute of the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ; Nazaria Ignacia of Saint Teresa of Jesus (née: Nazaria Ignacia March Mesa), founder of the Congregation of the Missionary Crusaders of the Church, and Nunzio Sulprizio, lay man who lived a life of heroic virtue. On that Sunday morning Bishop Marcus will preside at the celebration of Holy Mass in the Cathedral. The Mass will be broadcast live on BBC Radio 4’s Morning Worship programme which begins at 8:10am.

ANNUAL MISSION APPEAL 2019 In 2019 the Annual Mission Appeal will be made by the Society of African Missions (SMA Fathers). The Annual Mission Appeal is a unique opportunity for the faithful in our parishes to hear directly from a missionary (religious or lay) about their time overseas and to learn about the Church's missionary work. It is also a chance for the faithful to contribute financially to the work of that particular missionary society. In due course therefore, a member of SMA Fathers will be contacting the parish priest directly to organise a suitable date to visit your parish. Please do all that you can to make the missionaries welcome and assist them in facilitating this mandatory appeal.

LIST OF THOSE WHO ARE ILL Our list of those in our community who are in need of prayers because of illness has been added to lately. Please continue to let us know who is in need of our support through prayer. It is important that the list is kept up to date. If you know that someone has recovered then let Fr Larkin or Gez Hodgson know – so that we can keep the list valid. Thank you.

‘CRAGG CHALLENGE” - ADVANCE WARNING

This now appears to be becoming an annual event. It takes place on Sunday 23rd September. It draws increasing numbers of spectators so we need to be aware of some possible disruption. Also, with the car park already under pressure from locals on Sunday mornings some pre-thought may be needed to allow members of our community to park. Richard Constantine

DEMENTIA AND THE EUCHARIST The Diocese of Leeds is aiming to become a ‘Dementia Friendly Diocese’. An action plan has been developed and approved by Bishop Marcus. It will be formally launched during the Caritas Leeds Day of Reflection at Notre Dame Sixth Form Catholic College Leeds on Saturday 6th October (details can be accessed through the Diocesan website, or the Justice and Peace website or the Growing Old Gracefully website) Part of this action plan is to produce some helpful guidance on Dementia and the Eucharist. This is aimed at re-enforcing current good practice but may also offer some suggestions to enhance current practices. This guidance is particularly useful for Eucharistic Ministers within our parish. Copies of this guidance are available at the back of church. Anyone should feel free to pick up a copy.

A NUN’S STORY

Wheeler Hall, Leeds Sat 22nd Sept. 2pm-4pm: Sr Agatha, now well into her 80s, has led an interesting and challenging life. She has written an autobiography which begins with her life as a child, her call to the religious life (while writing a letter to her fiancé), and how she has progressed in the journey of her life since. It is full of amusing and personal stories, as well as transparent honesty about the difficulties faced, and her reliance on God through good times and bad. The book is a great read, and Sr Agatha is an engaging speaker. There will be time to hear from Sr Agatha, talk with her about her life and the issues raised in the book, and purchase a copy of the book. Half the price of each book is given to the Congregation of Jesus Convent in York. To book or for more information email [email protected] or phone 0113 391 7928..
