About St. Paul’s The earliest record of Episcopal Church services in this vicinity was 1816 when St. Stephen's Church of Perryville was incorpo-rated. At that time Chittenango was little more than a gathering of frame and log houses. From 1816-1832 rectors from St. Stephen's held missionary services in Chittenango. Around 1849 a few gentlemen who greatly admired and revered the beautiful services of the Church, agreed to make an effort to have services occasionally held. By the spring of 1855 services be-gan to be held regularly once a month in the Bethel. St. Paul's was officially organized as a parish on June 18, 1855. St. Paul’s church was built in 1865 as a Gothic Revival-style structure. The lot, build-ing, furniture and windows cost $5000. The building was completed in less that six months. The first service was held in the church on Easter Day, April 1, 1866. On May 12, 1866 the church was consecrated by Bishop Coxe. It was added to the U.S. National Historic Register of National Places in 1996.

In Memoriam Pete C. Stucker, Sr., brother of MaryJane Pokorney, passed away on December 22, 2019. A memorial service will be held in the Spring.

Attending the November meeting was Judy O., Ed H., Pat D., Tania M., and Fr. Leon. Missing was Sue G., due to breaking her arm. The meeting was called to order at 6:25 PM and Fr. Leon did the opening prayer. The Sept./Oct. minutes were read and ap-proved. As was the Treasurer’s report. Committee reports were submitted and read. Under New Business – the Vestry approved a donation of $200 to the “Mitten Tree”, for Barb B. and Tania M. to use to help with any extra expenses occurred. The Vestry also ap-proved a donation to the Chittenango FD of $200. A donation in Fr. Charles name was made to the Sullivan Food Cupboard, in ap-preciation for what he does for us. Tania is going to look into a new Flag Stand for inside the church, the one we have is tilting and very loose. Judy O. brought it to the attention of the Vestry, that we are still looking for a new Clerk of the Vestry. Fr. Leon handed out a brochure from the Diocese, concerning lend-ing monies out to Churches with a 2% inter-est rate. He also handed out brochures from the Episcopal Relief Fund. Judy, Fr. Leon and Sue (via message) all agreed that having the Eucharist mixed in with the Convention, made both very disjointed. Discussed the idea of setting up a table outside, with water/lemonade, popcorn, offer a tour of the church, etc. – something to do in the nicer months. Questions came up about Welcome Baskets from the Chamber of Commerce and if we

can put something in there. Under Old Business – Judy reported the pens were a huge hit (note from Clerk, I LOVE mine). The Closing Prayer was offered up by Fr. Leon and the meeting was adjourned at 7:40 PM. The December meeting was held immediate-ly after Church on Dec. 15th, as the regular Vestry Meeting was going to be the Christmas Party. In attendance was Judy O., Ed H., Sue G., and Fr. Leon. Absent was Pat D. and Tania M. (to have a quorum Tania M. gave Judy O. permis-sion to vote for her). The Finance Committee and Treasurer sub-mitted the 2020 Budget for Final Approval. Approved with many thanks from the Vestry. Under New Business – Annual Meeting has been moved to the 4th Sunday in January – Fr. Leon will lead worship on the 1st and 4th Sunday in January. Fr. Leon closed the meeting out with a prayer and it was adjourned at 10:45 AM. Respectfully submitted

Matthew 2:1-12

Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men[a] from the east came to Jerusalem, 2 saying, “Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose[b] and have come to worship him.” 3 When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him; 4 and assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born. 5 They told him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for so it is written by the prophet:

6 “‘And you, O Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,

are by no means least among the rulers of Judah;

for from you shall come a ruler

who will shepherd my people Israel.’” 7 Then Herod summoned the wise men secretly and ascertained from them what time the star had ap-peared. 8 And he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, “Go and search diligently for the child, and when you have found him, bring me word, that I too may come and worship him.” 9 After listening to the king, they went on their way. And behold, the star that they had seen when it rose went before them until it came to rest over the place where the child was. 10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy. 11 And going into the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh. 12 And being warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed to their own country by another way.

Episcopal Church Office of Public Affairs Nov 22, 2019 Forward Movement, along with partners from across the Episcopal Church and the Anglican Church of Canada, invites followers of Jesus to participate in the Good Book Club, a church-wide Bible reading initiative. The Good Book Club will focus on the Gospel of John, with participants reading a section of scripture each day during the Epiphany season, starting on January 6, 2020. “The Good book Club is helping us to read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest the holy scripture, anew in our time,” said Presiding Bishop Michael B. Curry. “The Good Book Club is a helpful tool to engaging in ‘Learn,’ one of the seven Way of Love practices for a Jesus-centered life.”

This is the third year for the Good Book Club, an initiative designed to support and encour-age daily scripture. For the first time, the An-glican Church of Canada is actively participat-ing with a special webinar offered by the Montreal Diocesan Theological College. Also new this year is an invitation from the Episcopal Asset Map for all congregations named St. John’s to participate by sharing how God is at work in their communities. (To participate, email [email protected]).

Other partners include the United Thank Of-fering, Episcopal Migration Ministries, Build-ing Faith, Episcopal Church Foundation, The Living Church, the Diocese of the Central Gulf Coast, Forma, GrowChristians.org, Church-Next, Missional Voices, the Episcopal Church ’s evangelism ministry and office of communica-tion, and RenewalWorks.

“When we embrace scripture and commit ourselves to prayerful study of God’s Word, we open ourselves to transformation, and we take another step on the path of the Way of Love,” said Richelle Thompson, deputy direc-tor and managing editor of Forward Move-ment. “The Good Book Club offers a wonder-ful way to celebrate Epiphany by diving deep into this gospel and the story of the true light of the world.”

The Good Book Club website lists the daily readings and partners as well as a variety of resources and formation tools. Spanish re-sources and information are available at facebook.com/groups/ClubBiblico and goodbookclub.org/espanol. Organizations, including dioceses, that would like to partner and develop re-sources for the wider church should contact Richelle Thompson at [email protected].

Forward Movement is a ministry of the Epis-copal Church that inspires disciples and em-powers evangelists. With offices in Cincinnati, Ohio, Forward Movement offers online re-sources, digital products, books, pamphlets, and Forward Day by Day. Learn more at www.forwardmovement.org.
