Pastor Cal’s Corner Dear Friends,
Most people think of summer as a time to slow down and take a break from the normal routines. Here at Central we’ve done just the opposite. Starting with our Father’s Day Car Show we have continued to do some pretty cool things.
We hung out at the Surf Shack during the last week of June as our annual Vacation Bible School program took center stage. It was pretty awesome. We had about ninety kids and teen and adult volunteers step up to catch the wave of God’s amazing love. Kudos goes to Marie Bertsch and her cadre of volunteers. The Thursday night barbecue was a blast. The food and water slide made the whole week even more special for all in attendance.
In July we sent our short-term mission team out to Oklahoma by commissioning them during our worship service. The group was blessed. They arrived at the Murrow Indian Children’s Home and before long everyone was doing something to improve the homes where the children lived. Each evening we hosted a less formal version of Vacation Bible School. The kids got to act out the Biblical stories, make crafts and play some water games. (With 97-98 degree days the water balloons were a big hit!) I don’t know if you would call it a highlight or not, but the tornado that touched down just up the street was another reminder that God was with us.
On July 24th Sarah and Seth Moseley brought their son, Harlen, before us in a service of family dedication. Sarah and Seth were looking for a church and settled on ours when Sarah’s sister, Emily, decided to have her upcoming wedding here. It was so nice to have them, and the family, join us.
When you add in the enthusiasm and good attendance at Avondale Chapel this summer, you can truly sense that the Holy Spirit is moving among us.
On a personal note, we were thrilled to finally move into our new home in Westerly. It has been quite a journey. Along the way, I often questioned God as to why it was taking so long. Now I know. He had something special in mind for us. The house we purchased, which is my dream home, just became available a short time ago. It all came together in His time. Lori and I want to thank you all for your prayers, words of encouragement and support over the last three and a half years. We hope to have an open house some time this fall. We would love to have you drop in then and visit us.
Our new address is 68 Summer Street, Westerly, RI 02891. Our phone number is 1-401-596-7957.
For us this whole thing has been one more happy and blessed moment in a summer full of them for us at Central Baptist Church. So if you are on vacation, enjoy it! I look forward to seeing you when you get back. If you are in town on Sunday morning, drop in and let’s praise God together.
Be blessed! Cal Note: A group will be attending the Franklin Graham Event in Providence on August 31. Please speak to Pastor Cal or call the church office if you would like to attend.

As expected during the summer, the donations in June did not meet our planned amount. However, the total giving for the year is still above the plan. Other good news is that expenses were once again lower than planned for the month, reducing the total planned deficit by over $20,000! Thank you for your continued generous support. If you’ll be traveling this summer, please consider using our electronic giving (see link below) to set up your gift as a recurring donation. That way your donations will continue to support the ministries of Central Baptist Church when you are away. For your convenience, we now have online giving, which includes automatic weekly or monthly giving. You can check
out the options on the Donations page of our web site (www.cbcwesterly.org). Just click on the Make a Donation
button. The site offers the same level of security as bank web sites and you’ll get an email acknowledgement of your
tax-deductible gift.

For Reflection
“We have no government armed with power capable of contending with human passions unbridled by morality and religion. Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.” President John Adams (1797-1801) “The Americans combine the notions of Christianity and of liberty so intimately in their minds that it is impossible to make them conceive the one without the other.” Alexis de Tocqueville: French Observer of America in 1831

Board of Missions
How blessed we are! As of the writing of this mission update, our short-term mission team is bringing their love and talents to the Murrow Indian Children’s Home in Muskogee, Oklahoma. Thank you to all who participated. Upcoming WARM meals will be provided as follows: August-Board of Trustees; September-Board of Christian Education; October-Deacons. Thank you to the Church Council for providing the July meal. As always, if any member of our congregation feels they would like to be a part of this ministry, please speak with Laura Fargo or any member of the Mission Board. In this month’s “MISSIONARIES AT WORK”, we invite you to learn about Marilyn Raatz, who assists American Baptist International Ministries partners throughout Africa to promote Peace & Justice. May God Bless each and every one of you as you faithfully serve our Lord! Jean Smith
Marilyn Raatz American Baptist International Ministries Africa Email: [email protected] Birthday: March 5 Language Used in Ministry: English. Marilyn provides instruction, skills training, consultation and coaching for young leaders entering the pastorate, careers in education, civil society organizations or the private sector. First called to Africa in 2007, she hopes to continue encouraging deep personal and community understanding of and renewed commitment to Psalm 85:10, “Mercy and truth have met; justice and peace have been kissed.” Marilyn’s ministry relies heavily on the grace of God, her Master of Arts in Conflict Transformation from the Center for Justice & Peacebuilding at Eastern Mennonite University and the intensive training she received at the Center for Nonviolent Communication in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She is also trained in Strategies for Trauma Awareness and Resilience (STAR). Marilyn asks that you pray – -that God will multiply his children all around the world who are committed to peace and the dignity of all people, even when the world looks violent and hopeless. -for faith, wisdom and humility in me as I continue to invite others to partner with me as I enter the mission service. -for followers of Jesus to financially support the ongoing work of International Ministries to bring hope, healing and holy purpose to thousands. -for focal partners in Africa to seek out knowledge and training in conflict transformation and to pass it on.

LIBRARY NEWS New Additions to the Library
Spirituality: America: Turning A Nation To God - Tony Evans (Billy Graham Library Selection) Pastor Evans reflects on the moral, cultural, economic, and political disturbances that are prevalent in America today. He raises the question: Is there any hope for America? The author’s answer is that America’s problems are spiritual in nature. He advocates a return to God and His rule and authority through humble repentance, both individually and collectively. He elaborates on God’s promises to forgive and restore His people when they do so. Fiction: The Rose Trilogy – Beverly Lewis, “The reigning queen of Amish fiction.” “Romance, mystery, and family drama intertwine deep in the heart of Lancaster County’s Amish country.” The Thorn – Vol. 1 ~ The Judgment - Vol. 2 ~ The Mercy - Vol. 3 These Books and other recent additions can be found in the Library Corner in Fellowship Hall. Visit the Library located on the Nursery School Hallway – Ground Floor. CD copies of Sunday Worship services are available in the Media Section of the library. Contact the Church office if you would like to receive a copy on a regular basis in the mail.
Think Big
Matthew 13:32 – The mustard seed is the smallest of all seeds. When it grows, it is the largest of all garden plants and becomes a tree; then the birds come and perch in its branches. (TNIV – paraphrased) When I read the above devotion in Guideposts “Mornings with Jesus 2016” devotional, I thought how much it mirrors my own thoughts about our hopes and dreams for the future. The future is so important and we as a people sometimes take it for granted that somehow it is going to happen even if we do not actively plan for it. It is good to recognize the past and those who put their hopes and dreams to the test to bring us to the point in which we now find ourselves. It is now up to the present generation to chart the course that will bring our hopes and dreams for the future to fruition. Planning for the present is done jointly by groups of elected and appointed leaders and we are in good hands.
Ministries that we continue to maintain and improve upon are added to as needed. Much discussion is going on within our leadership groups about accelerating our efforts to formalize plans for the Central Baptist Church of the future, but there is a great need for greater participation by the congregation in this effort. The discussions going on are contained within too small a group of our total membership. It is essential that the group be expended in order to achieve best results. Our congregation has much to offer in terms of faithfulness, knowledge, and expertise. To leave this resource untapped would be foolhardy. When you read the above devotion, you find themes worthy of reflecting on. They are: His goodness and mercy surprises us, His greatness, power, resources, love, compassion, grace, and majesty are endless. In His depth, width and breadth we find miracles, healing, deliverance, and joy. What does He ask in return? The whole of our lives, that our silent hidden hopes be placed in His hands, to remember Him and do not make Him small. Now, one last thought…make your hopes and dreams for the future reflect the bigness of God, You can’t go wrong with that thinking. Remember the scriptural reference at the beginning: Allow the seed to grow and become a tree, birds (people) will come and perch in your branches and join your ministry. By John Macomber
I have been thinking a lot about Jesus lately; that and the fact that no hope or dream is too big or too small for the One who loves us the most.
He loves surprising His kids with His goodness and mercy in ways greater than they could ever imagine. He is unlimited in His greatness. His power is unmatched. His resources are endless. His love covers this earth and pins it among the stars. His compassion has no boundaries and it echoes down through the ages. Shouting with each rising of the sun, “I am here!” His mercy floods the whole of the earth. His grace cannot be contained…not within nations or planets or galaxies.
We cannot fathom the depth or width or breadth of His majesty. And this great One holds us in the very center of
His palm. He will withhold no good thing from us. This is the promise He has given us. He is the God of miracles and healing and deliverance and unspeakable joy.
All he asks is that we give Him the whole of our lives; the struggles and victories, the successes and failures, the wants and needs, the great joys and deep sorrows. Our silent hidden hopes? Those He would like us to place in Him. And then He asks one more thing…that we remember Who He is and that we not make Him small because He is anything but that.
I’m hoping big today. And do you know what the most remarkable thing is? Once you start putting your hopes in Jesus…it is hard to stop. So what are you waiting for? Susanna Foth Aughtmon

In The Spotlight
By Nancy Balentine
Sandy Christina
On most Sundays a glance to my right tells me whether the Schilke clan has assembled in their customary pew three rows from the back. I mentally take attendance remembering that in the winter months Sandy Christina will be in her "over-50 community" in Vero Beach enjoying her "second family" and the pool and the true relaxation she feels there. In the summer, the clan relocates to Avondale Chapel filling a pew in the same approximate location as at Central. Otherwise, they are in attendance and it is a memorable sight. Sandy is the daughter of Harriet and Reinhold Schilke, sister of Linda Bruno, Robert, and Edward Schilke. Sandy grew up in Westerly and graduated from Westerly High. She met her first husband, Ed Chiaradio, at the Food Fair Supermarket, now the site of the new Cumberland Farms. He was a meat cutter and she an office worker. They married and had four children - Anthony, Marie, Deana, and Nicole. Sandy commented, "He passed away before his time." Her present husband is John Christina who was employed at Electric Boat and whose keen avocation has been golf. He has taught the grandchildren to play. Their seven grandchildren range from 13 to 40 and their beautiful names are Kerri Lynn, Olivia, Emma, Aaron, Christopher, Jared, and Lucas. This is a bit hard to believe, but Sandy says there are 6 great grandchildren aged 2 to 15. What I find amazing is that all of these children, grand, and great-grands live in or close to Westerly. While all these family members were being added, Sandy made time to work sometimes as a secretary and sometimes as a medical assistant. Among other jobs she was medical assistant to Dr. Leadbetter for twelve years at the Westerly Medical Center and to Dr.Woodworth, an ENT doctor for thirteen years. She worked briefly for an insurance company and retired from Stone Ridge, a retirement village in Mystic, to care for John at home. Despite the calls on her time and energy from her large (and did I mention-nearby?) family, Sandy has an amazing list of activities and hobbies. She takes an art class weekly learning oil and water color painting. She loves to read especially Beverly Lewis and our own Anita Greene novels. She cooks ...everything. She volunteers at Central Baptist to assist our financial secretary. She has much responsibility for the large offerings at the food tables at Central's bazaar. Surprisingly, she likes to sing. She says that she and Linda sing along with Eileen Fiore, a local teacher who has made a CD of spiritual songs. Don't expect to hear this duo; their efforts are strictly confined to their cars. Sandy formerly collected moose, but to limit dusting she's given up the moose. Her favorite activity is to watch grandsons playing football and a granddaughter playing lacrosse. She didn't mention, but I happen to know, that she is very active on the team that sees to the needs of her nonagenarian mother, Harriet, who lives only a minute away. The words dedicated, hardworking, and fun are prominent in my thinking about this active member of Central Baptist. I am touched by the knowledge that she transferred her payments for the Lancaster trip to a new member when a shoulder injury prevented her making the trip. I saw how much this was appreciated, and I salute her kindness.

Making the Waves Come In
A boy was sailing his first toy boat when suddenly the string dropped from his hand. In spite of his frantic attempts to regain it, the boat was soon far beyond his reach. He then appealed to his older brother to get it back for him. With-out comment, the bigger boy picked up rocks and began throwing them just beyond the boat. It seemed to the little fellow that his brother had paid no attention to his pleas — in fact, it looked as though he was making matters worse. But then the lad noticed that the first rock hit the water and set up a little wave. Each succeeding rock added to the waves that were binging the little boat nearer and nearer to shore. The thing that threatened destruction saved the lit-tle boat.
It may seem that disaster follows disaster many times in our lives, and there is no apparent reason for it. But the waves that seem to mean complete destruction may in reality bring us closer to God. A.C. Frey Collection
A Thought for Today
God gives us a new day each morning.
We can spend it in joy or in sorrow;
We can’t change what happened yesterday,
And we don’t know what’s coming tomorrow;
So as long as today is all we have,
It seems like a good thing to do,
To make it as nice as a day can be
For ourselves and for others, too.
The Bible is meant to be bread for our daily use,
not just cake for special occasions.
