NEWS FROM THE ORCHARD. It looks as it we will have our first plums this year. There a few apples, but the crop is poor. Everyone in the valley is telling the same story. I blame a late frost that destroyed many blossoms. There's always next year to look forward to. Many thanks to James Midgeley for cutting the grass around the trees. That was a big improvement. On Thursday 29 August a working party from Northern Rail will help us cut back the jungle that has grown up around the orchard fence. Peggy Thomas

On Tuesday evening, 20 August, the monthly meeting will take place at the Pennine Manor Hotel beginning at 7-30 pm followed by socialising and a meal. Any men interested in joining the Huddersfield Catenians contact Dennis Donnelly on 01484 606042.
What is ACTA (Leeds)? We are a group of Catholics in the diocese of Leeds (priests, lay, religious) drawn together by love of Christ's Church and wishing to promote her future. We feel it is imperative to build a new Church for the new future as indicated by Pope Francis. We consider that a key component for this development is to engage in dialogue - at all levels. Jesus calls us to action. Dialogue will help us to take up his call to bring the love of God to our world.

WALK THE ST WILFRID’S WAY
The newest Diocese of Leeds Pilgrimage – the two-day-long St Wilfrid’s Way Camino – returns this year between Friday 11 and Saturday 12 October!
The route, which stretches from Leeds to Ripon, goes through some of the most notable sites of Catholic heritage within our Diocese, of which St Wilfrid is one of our Patrons. Beginning at 8 am on Friday with a Pilgrims’ Mass at Leeds Cathedral, the journey will continue onward, visiting the Carmelite Monastery at Wood Hall, en route to the first day’s destination: the mediaeval Chapel of Our Lady of the Crag in Knaresborough. Highlights of the second day will include St Joseph’s Church and historic Presbytery at Bishop Thornton (the oldest Mass House in the Diocese), and passing by the Recusant Catholic site, Markenfield Hall, before ending the pilgrimage with a Vigil Mass for St Wilfrid’s Feast Day (12 October) at St Wilfrid’s Catholic Church in Ripon. Pilgrims are welcome to join any part of this pilgrimage – but should first register their interest and ask for a booklet showing the full route by emailing Rowan Morton-Gledhill at [email protected]

SAINTS OF THE WEEK
St Pius X was born in Reise, Italy into a poor family in 1835. He worked as a parish
priest for 17 years before being made spiritual director at the diocesan seminary. Later he became bishop of Mantua, Patriarch of Venice and was elected Pope in 1903. He sought to renew Christian Life, by emphasising the Eucharist. He worked strenuously to avoid war in 1914, but died shortly after its outbreak on 20th August.
St Rose of Lima was born in Peru in 1586 and entered the third order of St
Dominic. She became known as a great mystic, all of this time living at home. She died, aged 31, in 1617.
St Bartholomew was born at Cana. He was led to Jesus by the apostle Philip,
and after Jesus’ Ascension tradition has it that he preached the gospel in India where he suffered martyrdom.

Season of Creation
Sep 1 – Oct 4 all-day
Instituted by Pope Francis in 2015, this season offers all in the Church the opportunity to reflect on our care
of creation. There are a number of resources available to help church communities do this.
The season of creation website has much material:- Season of Creation Website season of creation.org
The Columbans have also published guides relating to the individual Sundays during this period:- Columban
Sunday guide www.columban.org.au
World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation
Sep 1 all-day
Pope Francis has established 1 September as the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation,
encouraging the Catholic community around the world to pray for our common home.
It marks the start of the Season of Creation that runs until October 4th – the feast of St Francis of Assisi.

World Week for Peace in Palestine and Israel
Sep 15 – Sep 22 all-day
The World Council of Churches invites member churches, faith-based communities, and civil society
organizations around the world to join together for a week of prayer for a just peace for all in Palestine and
Israel. The theme in 2019 is “Humanity and Equality in God’s Creation”.
Though we are all created equally in God’s image, the military occupation and its discriminatory practices
and impacts on entire Palestinian communities is an obstacle to the fullness of life for all in God’s creation.
Drone warfare from Gaza to Raqqa with Chris Coles @ Mill Hill chapel
Sep 18 @ 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm
Chris Coles is the Director of Drone wars UK and vice-chair of Pax Christi UK. A rare opportunity to hear
about this relatively new aspect of warfare and how it is being used in the Israel Palestine conflict.
Everyone is welcome at Sabeel-Kairos events in Yorkshire.
5th World Day for Migrants and Refugees 2019
Sep 29 all-day
An opportunity to take part in this global show of solidarity with those who seek to get to a different country
from their own. Pope Francis, in his message encouraging people to participate in prayer and action on this
day, says “Take courage, it is I, do not be afraid!” (Mt 14:27). It is not just about migrants: it is also about
our fears. The signs of meanness we see around us heighten our fear of ‘the other’, the unknown, the
marginalized, the foreigner… What will you be doing in your parish community?
CAFOD Harvest Fast Day
Oct 4 all-day
This year, CAFOD’s Harvest Fast Day falls on the feast of St Francis of Assisi.
Given CAFOD’s work on Climate Change it is fitting that the season of Creation should end on this day and
that we should remember all those in the world who are most affected by Climate Change: the world’s
poorest communities.
