Overview

Welcome and congratulations! I’m delighted you decided to join me in prospering from this incredible discovery… I made by mistake! More about that in a second though…

This is not a particularly long manual. Why?

Because this is so unbelievably SIMPLE! It really doesn’t take that much explaining… If you’re a keen entrepreneur, you may have already ‘dabbled’ once or

twice in making money online. If so, you’ll have seen it’s not as easy as all the hyped-up advertising says it is!

You have to go to all the trouble of building an expensive website, have it “hosted” and if that wasn’t enough time and money spent, you have to then play all sorts of games online getting people to visit the blasted thing!

In short, very few people can make it work; I should know because I

was one of those failures… Lateral thinking can render some amazing results. Little did I know it

at the time, but approaching a problem as an ignorant ‘outsider’ has revealed such an unbelievably simple and lucrative opportunity ANYONE can follow very quickly and simply.

And yes, that’s without having a website, a product or getting

involved in all the usual internet ‘mumbo-jumbo’. You don’t even need to own a computer; you just need access to one for an hour as a one-off!

If I’m honest with myself, I’ve never exactly been the sharpest tool in the box. When I was a kid I had to have remedial home schooling to have any chance of a single certificate when I left. I truly wish I could have been one of those ‘smart-alecs’ who seem to ‘get it’ and sail through life never seeming to have a single money-worry… … But for once in my life, my simple-mindedness paid off… in a BIG way… Even a ‘bright-spark’ internet-whiz would NEVER have discovered this, so I still have to keep pinching myself to believe the fact I’ve beaten all those ‘dot-com nerds’ hands down! I mean, I’m just an everyday secretary who was struggling through life.

So how did I accidentally ‘hotwire’ the internet like this and make a ‘golden goose’? Well, imagine this huge fortress with steep, heavily defended walls and a great big, drawbridge to get through. Inside that fortress is the HUGE pile of wealth there is to be made on the internet.

Now imagine trying to scale those walls with no equipment and never having done anything like it before. THAT is what most people are trying to do!! So what did I do? Well, now imagine me face to face with that challenge. By mistake, I got ‘lost’ and wandered around the back of that fortress and found a ‘hidden’ door which lead straight in!

A solid gold door which opened up a gateway to riches I’m going to explain right here in this manual so you can open it up too! With hindsight it just seems like everyone’s getting bogged down with all the technical jargon and being intimidated by the internet… and rightly so, because doing things the way all the ‘experts’ say is a real headache! Sometimes people just can’t see the wood for the trees…

This is a real ‘David and Goliath’ story if ever you heard one… I’m going head to head with all the internet giants, doing even less work than they are and making as much money- probably more!

I know sharing this with a few people won’t hurt my business in the

slightest; I really haven’t even scratched the surface and you’ll realize this the second you try out this system for yourself!

So we’ve back-tracked what I did and packaged my lucrative mistake

into this step-by-step manual you can follow in the comfort of your own home. It won’t take more than an hour to set up one of these automatic income streams and you can do it without leaving your home!

My Lucrative Mistake

A little reminder of what I was explaining to you in the invitation I sent you…

When my husband Dave got home, I gave him the news; I told him I

was trying out one of the opportunities he’d bought on making money from the internet. He actually seemed pleased I was taking an interest (because I don’t think he’d actually done anything with all that stuff yet!)…

He said excitedly… “That’s great Vic… So did you get a website…? …Which product? … Did you rent an email list…? …Buy a banner ad…? Or use a ‘Pay-Per-Click’ ad on Google… Or….” I interrupted… “Pay-Per- WHAT?! Email? Banner thingamyjigs?? What on Earth are you rambling on about?? I have no clue about websites or any of that stuff… I don’t even know what half of that means!” He looked VERY confused. Then, he gave me that look- the look which kind of says “You’re being a dummy again”… and said…

“Vicky… you watched that DVD though, right? And that DVD tells you those things are what you have to do to make money online… you cannot argue with it… it’s really how it’s done by all the experts; they build a website and send traffic to it by emails, or pay-per-click advertising or search engine optimization!” Now he’d really lost me, but I did now realize I’d had another ‘blonde moment’, not understood the DVD properly and gone and done the wrong thing by mistake. I mean thinking about it, I could see where I’d gone wrong- I’d just taken everything too literally. I was like a monkey with a machine-gun!

So I confessed to him what I had done…

Well, he couldn’t believe I’d been so stupid. But, I’m used to being told that so I shrugged it off, more importantly, my plan to discredit all this get-rich-quick nonsense had completely back-fired. I went off with my tail between my legs and let him get back to his endeavors…

Then one day, I got an email saying there was some money I was

owed with instructions on how to claim it. It was over a grand! At first I thought it must be one of those internet scams you hear so much about, so I proceeded with caution… but sure enough, the money was real… and MINE!

But where had it come from…? It was all because of the ‘mistake’ I

made. I did the exact OPPOSITE of what that ‘get-rich-quick’ DVD told me to and made a HUGE chunk of change!!

“So did you get a website…? …Which product? … Did you rent an email list…? …Buy a banner ad…? Or use a ‘Pay-Per-Click’ ad on Google… Or….” “Pay-Per- WHAT?! Email? Banner thingamyjigs?? You see, the internet marketing DVD I watched showed me this really amazing website called “Clickbank”. I’m going to explain in detail all about this later on. Basically though, this website has THOUSANDS of e-books (a book which is downloaded as an electronic file rather than sent to you in the mail), spread across the most incredible range of subjects; anything from Fly Fishing to Bead Making- you name it! These aren’t your everyday sort of book you find in stores though… They’re more like ‘insider secrets’ manuals. A bit like this one I suppose and they’re really very good. Plus, each of these well-written e-books is sold with very professionally written sales literature on that website. People can go there, browse all sorts of categories and buy the book there and then with their credit card details. Great. But, Clickbank also allow anyone like you or me to resell these books and claim a commission for doing so. Don’t worry too much about the ‘ins and outs’ of this at this stage as I’m really going to go through EVERYTHING later on.

For now, just understand that you can resell these really neat little e-books about a wide range of subjects and claim commission for doing so. You don’t need a website, as they manage the whole thing for you- you just have to get people to go there and buy to get your referral commission. Perhaps you didn’t know all this so far, but for people who are familiar with ways of making money online, Clickbank is no secret and is a common feature of many “How to make money from the internet” type courses and such… But here’s where doing what the ‘experts’ say becomes a MAJOR nightmare… You then have to get people to buy this e-book by getting people on the internet to go to see it.

Remember: this is NOT how my Golden Backdoor method works! I’m just showing you the conventional (and HARD) way people are trying to do this…

Using conventional internet marketing methods (NOT my method!), there are 3 ways to do this as follows:

1. Emails This is where you send a large amount of emails out to a list recommending they go to some place to by something. But what if you don’t have an email list already? Well, you could rent one, but those rarely work and are generally a waste of time and money. 2. Online Advertising This can be done through a ‘banner ad’ which is like an ad on some webpage somewhere and you hope and pray someone gets to your site that way. Or there are ‘pay-per-click’ ads where you can advertise based on what people are searching for. If you’ve tried doing this on Google or whatever, you’ll know it requires patience and time… and money. I’m not saying it can’t be done, just that there’s an easier way- MY way. 3. Search Engine Optimization This is mind-blowing- it really is and requires the most time and patience of all. It involves adapting a website to suit the algorithms of a search engine. Need I go on? Have you fallen asleep yet??

Again, I’m not saying these 3 methods can’t be done, because it can-

and it makes people a LOT of money. But I expect what YOU would like is a SIMPLE way to QUICKLY make money AUTOMATICALLY without having to learn a whole new skill particularly!!

Anyway, getting back to my story, my ‘mistake’ was that I got the

Clickbank part, but got so excited about that part I kind of ‘switched-off’ when it got to the part about how to get people to go and buy the e-book I became a reseller of (those 3 methods I explained above) and completely misinterpreted what it was telling me to do!

What I essentially heard was “Go and become a reseller of an e-book

and advertise it so people buy it and make you commission for every sale.”

I took what I heard literally and did exactly that… They should have been more specific and said to advertise ONLINE!! Well, I naively went to a local store and bought a magazine which

matched up with the subject of the e-book I was reselling. I called the magazine headquarters up and placed a small, inexpensive ad in the classified section at the back which advertised it!

No-one else was doing that it seemed which seemed strange, but there

it was. It was only when my husband told me did I realize I’d done everything back to front and totally the OPPOSITE to how the DVD had said.

But then the money poured in and we saw things differently… There are literally THOUSANDS of different e-books YOU can go

and match up with THOUSANDS of different special interest magazines, and by placing a small inexpensive ad in the back, you can make THOUSANDS each and every month on autopilot! Remember, these e-books are really ‘HOT’ and the sort of thing people buying magazines on that subject are going to LOVE.

There are just too many or me to cover by myself- there’s enough

room for us all. Don’t worry about anything. All I’ve done at this stage is given you

an overall explanation about what this is. I’m going to take you through the whole thing in baby-steps right here. It’s really very simple though as you can now surely see.

Think about the simple process I went through:

• No website or website server of my own. • No product of my own. • No lengthy sales letter. • No hassles with advertising anything online. • No holding or shipping any stock.

• No credit card processing. • No customer complaints. • No face to face selling. • My computer was broken so I didn’t even have one of those to

use! I went to a ‘cyber-café’ and used one for an hour.

Let me hear you say: “At Last… The Perfect Home Business!!” It’s internet marketing…. But not as we know it! Remember, there’s going to be nothing technical here. I just need

to show you how to use a couple of very simple websites and teach you a trick or two about writing and placing ads and you’ll be on your way.

Is this brilliant or what? Now that’s the kind of mistake I wish I could

make more often…

All because I didn’t listen to the TV…

Quick Start Preparations I’m sure you’re now as excited as I was about getting started with this amazing opportunity, so before we get going, I thought you’d like to make some preparations so you can get cracking right away when we’re done here… You don’t actually need a computer of your own, just access to one with an internet connection. My computer was actually broken when I did this, so I went to an “internet café” where you can use one of theirs. You could also use a library.

You see, we’re actually not spending much time on the computer making money online with this method.

It sounds crazy but there it is! We only need a one-time use of one for around an hour using the

simple websites I’m going to show you later. You’ll also need to locate a book store with the widest range of magazines possible. We’re not looking for a small store; the biggest one you

can find- preferably the kind of book superstores you see around. They also have coffee shops usually which is nice! And that’s it. Once you have all this in your head- where you’ll go to get these simple facilities- relax and let’s move on to how this is actually done…

What the Market is

You have to first understand what the market is. If EVER you make any money as an entrepreneur, of course it’s because someone, somewhere is BUYING something. Period. So with that reality in mind, let’s look at who OUR market is… Thankfully, like everything else in this system, this is made very easy for us again! Our market varies very widely, but essentially you can boil it down into people who have a special interest in something. In fact, quite often it’s a passion for something. This is great news. Why? Well, 2 reasons…

1. They’re enthusiastic about anything related to their passion.

As explained, we’re going to be placing a small ad in a specialist magazine. If someone is buying a magazine about something, they are usually choosing to do so because they LOVE the subject… or they are particularly in finding out information about that subject at this point in time.

Either way, we have an avid audience, remarkably interested in the information we have to offer (via Clickbank)!

When people are this hungry, they often buy ANYTHING to do with

what they’re interested in. And what we have to offer them is exposure to some sales literature like they’ve probably never seen aimed squarely at their interest!

We’re not doing the highly wasteful ‘shotgun’ approach where we

take an ad out in a local paper or something- we are using the ‘sniper’ approach and targeting specific niches. This approach gets us a LOT more bang for our buck!

Now let’s look at that second reason…

2. It makes this business system virtually recession-proof.

Not only do you want an automatic income stream, but you also want

one which won’t be interrupted as the economy has its ups and downs. Obviously, this especially applies if one of the ‘downs’ means losing your job or whatever!

Yes, this can be a brilliant ‘safety-net’ for you and your family… Because the people we’re targeting are so passionate about the subject

in question, they’re not going to stop becoming interested in that if they become poorer are they? In fact, this business would probably do BETTER in a recession as people look for ways to cheer themselves up!

Some things simply don’t suffer in a recession and this is one of

them… Great. So the sort of market we’re aiming for is good news. As long as

we match up something appropriate to the magazine in question, we’re well on the way.

The important lesson here though is something you MUST take on

board right now though. This system is really simple and virtually foolproof

IF you bear this in mind- I guarantee if you mess it up it will be because you didn’t make an appropriate match with the market.

It sounds simple, but most people are actually ‘product-driven’ rather

than ‘market-driven’. To explain this better, here’s how I was once taught this simple concept word for word…

The Key to the Door “Let’s say you and I are about to compete against each other with

Hot Dog stands… What advantages would you like to have? Whatever it is, just say.

Take a minute now to write down what you want to have to beat me. Very important- think about this before continuing...

Ready? OK then. What did you decide on? Some extra-yummy buns? The world’s best selection of toppings and

relishes? How about a really cool-looking stand which glimmered in the sunshine?? Or maybe the hot dog sausages themselves are the best in world- real frankfurters imported from Germany?

Whatever you chose as an advantage, I will grant you. In return, will

you grant me the one advantage I want? Yes? Good. Because I will wipe you out with the thing I want in a single day! What is it I want? Okay, play the game properly and decide what you want before

turning over to see my answer…

Here’s what I want… A load of starving people! Get the point? You focused on PRODUCT and you LOST. I focused on MARKET and

won. Period. Would it matter if I didn’t have all the relishes, yummy-buns and

imported frankfurters?? In fact, even if my hot dogs were the worst in the world I’d still have beaten you!!!

Let the market drive you is the point. The days are gone when you

wake up and decide on a business idea. Is there a market already and can you reach it? That’s the question.

This is why I’m a Direct Marketer (internet marketing is one type of

direct marketing). We are entirely market-driven. We ONLY hit ‘starving people’- people who want certain things. We let them TELL US what to sell them.

I want you to go back now and think long and hard about the little

exercise we just did because if you can get your head around it, you will have put yourself in the top 5% of business people in the world. I guarantee it!

The vast majority of companies are what’s called ‘product-lead’, meaning they think of a product and then think how the market fits in. It’s all back to front.

Many, many questions are all centred around finding the right product, when they should have been centred around finding the right market. This is an important distinction and is not splitting hairs.

Your aim as an entrepreneur, is to find a MARKET, not a product. Find some hungry fish, THEN find some food for them.

This makes things easy, not hard! Once you find the market, there shouldn’t be a question about whether your product will work, as much as “How much will they like it?”

The companies which embrace this simple concept become huge successes. These are the companies are centred around the market. By the same token, companies which centre around a product do poorly or fail.

When a business fails, all number of lame excuses are fired out, when in fact the REAL reason is almost always that THEY DIDN’T SELL THINGS PEOPLE WANTED TO BUY!!

If you have a business already, or even if you work for someone else, take a look at that business now and ask if it is product-centred or market-centred.

EVERY SINGLE ENTERPRISE YOU EMBARK ON SHOULD BE

BASED ON EVIDENCE THAT A PARTICULAR MARKET WANTS SOMETHING!!

Also, remember that marketing rewards reality not ego! If there are vast piles of money to be made from penis enlargement pills (and there is by the way) and you sell them, marketing will reward you. Marketing doesn’t give a hoot about the fact that you won’t feel proud to tell people what you sell. Don’t let pride stand in the way of what you offer, as long as it’s legal.

Don’t even think about a product until you have the market, then make the product fit the market. We’re not even going to create a website until we have found the MARKET!!”

How to Select Your Target So as discussed then, our first and foremost step is to find a market.

Because our advertising is done through specialist magazines, we are AUTOMATICALLY driven by what magazines are available and who they’re aimed at. In other words, we find a magazine and THEN we go and find a suitable e-book to sell through it.

So this primary stage allows you a nice visit to that LARGE bookstore

we spoke of earlier! When you get there, make a beeline for the magazine section and look in awe at all the different magazines there are!

I bet you never really noticed before the hugely diverse range of

topics people want to read about. I mean, I still can’t get over it… But here’s what so great about this fact:

If a magazine exists for something… there’s money to be made from that market!

Just an economic fact- if there was no market, there would be no

magazine. Lucky us; the publishers have done all the work for us! Now you must be starting to see why there’s enough business for all

of us in this game; there’s just so many different magazines! And even if someone doing this does already advertise in a magazine you want to (and I doubt this would happen anyway!), they will be offering a different e-book because there are THOUSANDS of those too!!

Okay, so you’re in the large bookstore face to face with the many

different types of magazines. Where do you begin…? First, let’s eliminate what we’re NOT looking for:

1. Local Papers 2. National Papers 3. Magazines with wide appeal

Can you guess why? Yes, because we want the ‘sniper’ approach, not

the shotgun! We want to home in on narrowly focused magazines which appeal to a SPECIFIC audience.

We’re looking for magazines associated with hobbies, sports, special consumer reports, unusual interests, health etc. etc.

Okay, so when you spot a likely candidate publication, grab it off the shelf and find another to add to your shortlist. When you have a good selection to choose from, find a seat and take a look at them… For each one, complete the form over the page for it by answering the questions. This will become your research you will need later on. I’ve given you 10 research forms to use for now. Keep one blank one as your master copy though so you can photocopy more for another project. Do you think we would be wise to put that exact affiliate link in the ad? Do you think the average person is going to remember all that babble… or type it all in correctly?

Perhaps- they’re enthusiastic about the subject after all! But let’s make it easy for them AND save ourselves some space when it comes to putting the ad together! I’m no marketing ‘guru’; this is all common sense if you ask me!

By choosing a more ‘memory-friendly’ web address and setting things up so that anyone who goes to this ‘memory-friendly’ web address, is automatically redirected to our longwinded affiliate link. It’s a bit like when you have your phone line redirected when you change address or something.

Now, we’ve been real cheapskates so far haven’t we? I mean everything’s been free and we’ve got someone else paying the cost of all that stuff mentioned earlier.

But now, we have to spend some money. Before you start crying though, it shouldn’t be more than a few American Dollars!

What we want to do here is purchase a more suitable web address to have our interested people go to (which we will then redirect to the affiliate link). These ‘web addresses’ are known as “Domains” And here’s how we do it…

We need to come up with a domain name now which is appropriate for the reader profile of our magazine. Refer back to your research notes.

Ensure your domain name is as closely related as possible to the market you’re going for, AND that it ends in “.com”. There are many different things you can have after your chosen domain name but we want DOT COM (.com). I’ll explain why in just a second.

For example, if you’re going for Fly Fishers, ideally your domain name would be something like www.flyfishingtips.com . Yes, I know the domain you wanted may have been taken already, but just use your imagination and do your best. What you want is for your customer to take one look at your domain name and think your website looks like the best place to get what they want.

Another important tip: Don’t use hyphens (-) or forward slashes (/) to get the domain you want though ( for example, www.fly-fishingtips.com or www.fly-fishingtips/sea).

So why must it be .com and not have hyphens and slashes AND resemble what the target buyer is interested in? Think about it…

It’s okay when you’re advertising on the internet because people can just click on the web address they’re given- they don’t have to type anything in or remember the address. However, we don’t have such a luxury. We are trying to get someone who is seeing a PRINTED ad in a magazine to go to a website of our choosing. We want to make it easy for the person to do that.

Most people expect web addresses to end in .com. Most people will have a harder time remembering slashes and hyphens and some word which is totally unrelated to their topic of interest.

I emphasize this point because it could well be the case the .com domain you want has already gone and this website will offer you alternatives with the words you want but not ending in .com. As I said, use your imagination and research and come up with something else.

You should also go to the affiliate site you’re promoting (the sales literature for the product) and get inspiration that way. In fact, this is an excellent idea.

Another valuable tool you can use to help you find similar words relating to the subject is a trusty thesaurus.

So, once you’ve got a little list of suitable domain names you could use for this project, you enter it in this part of the page you’ve arrived at on www.godaddy.com

As you can see from above, I’m imagining I had an affiliate link for an e-book for golfers I wanted to promote, and I came up with that domain. Can you see how much more attractive that would look in a print ad? And how much more memorable it is for someone in that market?

Okay, so you then push the ‘search’ button next to it as shown, and you’ll get this next screen come up…

So, I can see that the domain I wanted is available and costs $8.95 per year to register and own. It’s also showing other related domains which are

Secondly, carefully enter your affiliate link (the long line of babble Clickbank gave you) in the “Forward to” box (middle arrow). Thirdly, click “save changes” (bottom arrow) and you’re done! Just one last thing; type in your new domain name to your internet connection and ensure the redirection is actually working! If not, recheck that you put in the right affiliate exactly. Very good. Believe it or not, all that will only take another 10 minutes or so. Pretty fine; 30 minutes of messing around here and there and a measly $8.95 spent.

Placing the Ad Now I’m going to share with you the benefit of a great deal of research from some of the world masters about writing successful ads. But before I do, I want to remind you of something…

We don’t exactly have an uphill struggle here!

Remember, we’re using the ‘sniper’ approach, not the ‘shotgun’. We’re providing red-hot information to niche market of people who are fanatical about the subject! How hard can it be to put together an ad when you put things in this light? The answer is: it isn’t! So what I mainly want to share with you in this last chapter then, is a few inside tricks which will serve you well when dealing with the people at the magazine who are going to place your ad for you. Here’s the thing to bear in mind: Magazines are in business to make money, and a great deal of that money is made by their sales people selling advertising space! So remember that in your dealings with them. What I want to show you is how to get the best deal from these people before we talk about writing the actual ad itself. First though, you’ve probably realized that this is the point when we have to invest a little money. Again, don’t panic because once again, this really is the perfect business!

You see, the magazines we’re going for are aimed at tight niches in the market, therefore, they’re not widely read by the masses like a national news paper would be. And of course, this means we are going to pay relatively small amounts to place our little ad in them.

Incidentally, the nature of these magazines also means that the people reading are focused on what we’re offering. It’s a highly efficient form of advertising.

Classified vs. Display First thing we need to get straight is whether we’re advertising in he classified or display section of the magazine in question, because they’re usually 2 different people in the magazine staff.

Classified is the section at the back of the magazine and the display ads are those placed within the body of the magazine - competition being most fierce for the first few pages, for obvious reasons. Normally you only ever see corporate advertisements in the display section, as these are the only people who can afford the exorbitant rates and who don't have to worry about anything as mundane as making money from their ad (or even covering advert cost). Although the response to a display ad would be higher than one in the classified, it would not be proportionally higher, which is why I have never taken out an advert in the display section. Why You Should Never Advertise in Pull-Outs... Avoid advertising in pull-outs. By pull-outs we mean a magazine that is inserted as a separate supplement into the main magazine. These can be anything from TV guides to fashion or gardening supplements; whatever the subject don't advertise in them unless you enjoy losing money, because the readership of a pull-out is one tenth of the readership of the main paper. The pity is, the rates are about one half! ...Or Inserts Don't bother with the glossy loose inserts that fall out of every magazine or newspaper that you buy; they only get tossed in the garbage. A good rule of thumb to remember with all methods of advertising is that if you don't read them, chances are nobody else does either!

Okay, so you know you want a classified ad in the magazine itself. It’s time to talk to the staff… Asking a simple question early on in your conversation with the salesperson will tell them you know what you’re doing and won’t be taken for a ride. Here it is… “Please tell me what is your circulation?” To which they will probably reply… “Well, our readership is….” At which point you interrupt and say… “No… I asked what your circulation was, not your readership.” You see, there are 2 figures the media use; readership and circulation. Readership is an ESTIMATION of how many people will actually read the publication; one person buys it and then it passes around from one person to the next. In other words it’s a meaningless guess but it’s usually a much larger figure so they use this when they speak to people looking to place ads. On the other hand, circulation is accurate. This is actual magazine sales in the average month. When you ask for this, you’ll be speaking from a position of strength! So when you get this figure, you’ll have an idea about how many people are going to buy the magazine you’re interested in advertising in. If there is more than one magazine about your chosen niche market (and this is often the case), you should compare circulation figures. You see, you have to compare apples with apples. 2 magazines may be quoting the same price for the same size ad, but which has the highest circulation? You want to get the most bang for your buck, right?

The True Cost of Advertising Space The cost of advertising space will depend on the size of your ad and the magazine you advertise in. But watch out, these prices can be deceptive, and you may not be getting such a great deal as you first thought. By comparing two magazines using the 'cost per thousand' circulation figures, you can determine how much an advert is worth to you in respect of cost to you per thousand readers. Here’s how to work that out… Let's say that Magazine A has a circulation figure of 40,000 and want 150 smackerooneys to place your ad. Divide 150 by 40 and you get 3.75. So to advertise in Magazine A it will cost you 3.75 per thousand circulation. To compare Magazine A rates with Magazine B rates, the figure you should really be using is this cost per thousand circulation, not just the price they’re quoting. They will quote prices in “columns inches” too. Knowing this terminology will again show them you’re not to be messed with! Here’s what it means… Buying Advertising Space Advertising space is sold in 'full page', 'half page', 'quarter page' and 'column inches'. The first three are self-explanatory, the latter describes how smaller and more oddly shaped space is priced - the magazine will give you a quote per column inch. Magazine ads are divided into columns, with a single column inch being one inch high and one column wide. Here’s another way to show them you know what you’re doing… Tests have shown that the best position for your advert is the 'outside right of right'; this means the outside edge of the right-hand side of a right-hand page. Always ask for this position. People are far more likely to see your ad when it is here, whereas ads on a left-hand page are easily missed.

Cheap Advertising Space and How To Get It Another question you should get in early on in the conversation is: “What’s rate card per column inch?” We’ve already discussed what ‘column inch’ means. ‘Rate Card’ is the top price. That’s the price the sales person would charge if they possibly could. Needless to say, you want to pay a much below rate card as possible!

Once you are well known to the magazine, you can get space that is

far, far cheaper than normal. Here's how: it' s 6 p.m. and the magazine have 15 minutes to sell any remaining space, if they don't sell it now, then they'll have to close the magazine for that evening and lose revenue. They call you (you've given them your work, home and mobile numbers for this reason) and ask if you want this space. You're in a fantastic position because you know that they're desperate to get rid of this space and there's no time left for them to call anyone else. Unfortunately, that still doesn't mean that they'll sell it to you at rock bottom prices (say 10% of rate card), as it's against their principle to go below about 20% of rate card. And so sounding like you're doing them a favour (if you sound too keen, they'll bump the price up), you offer them 25% of rate card and enjoy that warm glow as they bite your fingers off to take it. Of course, for this to work they must already have your artwork for the ad available in a file, which is why you have to be quite well known before you can take advantage of this. At that time of night it's too late to try and get artwork to them.

By the way, your ‘artwork’ can be a simple Word File you or someone can type up. We’re not going for any fancy graphics here, just text mainly. The disadvantage to buying advertising space in this way is that it is bought on a pre-empt basis, which means that your ad is not guaranteed to go out. If someone else gives them a better offer for the space, then they will print their ad and not yours without telling you. So bear that in mind.

In your initial conversation with the rep, they will most likely tell you the following: “In order for you to truly see if your ad’s going to work, you really should have the ad appear in 3 consecutive issues… and as it happens I’ve got this special deal where if you buy 3 months you get the third at half price!” This is nonsense and is nothing more than them trying to sell you more ad space. While it’s true that you will get more business from this type of media the more people see it over time, you certainly don’t need 3 months worth to know if your campaign is a winner or not! If you’ve done everything like I’m showing you here, odds are it WILL be a winner, but you still want to test as cheaply as possible just in case it doesn’t for some strange reason. Okay, so you know how to ‘take on’ the classified rep to the point where there knees are quivering. Now let’s go write an ad…

Now before you go ahead and write a nice little ad, let’s back up and think about what’s going on here…

Remember, you’re simply directing people to some sales literature

where they can get more information! Our objective is merely to tease them into knowing more so the great news is we really don’t need to say that much!

But what we do need to consider is what the person will see when

they arrive at your affiliate link after seeing your ad. The objective is to get them to buy ultimately of course… What I’m saying here is in order to write your ad, go back to your affiliate link and take a look at the sales literature the prospective customer will ultimately see. Simple! This will also maintain continuity. We don’t want the prospective customer to be confused when they arrive at your Clickbank sales page. If they’re expecting to see stuff on improving their golf swing (because your ad promised that), then that’s what they should see! So, don’t just say any old thing in your ad to get them to go to your affiliate page because getting them to go there doesn’t mean they’ll buy necessarily. Once again then, this system allows you to do things the easy way…

The headline is 90% of the success of an advert and so is by far the most important. So how do you get a winning headline? Hmmm… let’s see…

How about exactly the same one as on our affiliate page??!! That stuff

is often written by professional copywriters, so let’s hitch another ride for free!

Now that’s a great, ready-made headline don’t you think? So you’ve won 90% of the battle of writing a killer ad without even trying! Now for the rest, let’s add a little expert advice from legendary marketing ‘guru’ Jeff Sands and his 20 year career writing winning ads. Over to Jeff and the advice he often gives to anyone just starting to write classified ads…

“An ideal classified ad is the headline plus the subheading you would use in a sales letter (Vicky: Of course, the sales letter is our affiliate page). I always tell them that FREE DETAILS or FREE REPORT after the ad always increases response. If the word FREE REPORT comes before the headline of a classified you get too many time wasters.

Then I show them how to write a good headline.

I tell them when they write a sales letter they should list all of the

BENEFITS on paper in order of their importance. People buy benefits. The

Making it a Success

The ad appears and you await the results. If it’s a monthly magazine, wait a month to see what happened. If it made money, keep running the ad until it doesn’t make money. It’s that simple. Just let the money keep coming in while you put your feet up. However, once you have a profitable ad don’t be surprised if it’s profitable for YEARS. Now, you might think “Why would this be? Surely everyone will have seen it after a while!” But it doesn’t work like that… You see, people who read that magazine are often impulse buyers who don’t read it every month. In a way, you get fresh people seeing your ad constantly which is of course great news as it means the profits keep rolling in! Make sure you take a look at your ad appearing each month. Make sure you can see it; don’t just assume it’s appearing because it usually does- they may have made a mistake! If your sales are down one month, that’s the likely reason.

Also, keep hassling them about getting on the right side of the right page and to get lower rates- especially if you keep them thinking there’s a competitor knocking at your door! On that note, if there are other magazines aimed at the niche market you’re being successful in, it’s highly likely your ad will work in those too, so give it a try- you’ll probably double your profits! Okay, that’s the scenario you SHOULD be in if you’ve done everything correctly as you’ve been told to here. If it didn’t work first time, that’s okay, because it just means we need to tweak things a little or ensure you’re following the instructions you were given here more carefully. Ask yourself these questions…

1. Did the ad you wrote appeal to the typical reader of that magazine. Did it match the sort of headlines and sub-headlines on the front cover of the magazine?

2. Did the ad even appear like you expected it to?? Check the magazine itself?

3. Was the e-book sales information on your affiliate page suitable to the market? Did it match what your ad promised? Maybe try a different e-book- the ad may have worked but people didn’t like the information when they got online.

4. Are you using a ‘memory-friendly’ domain? Is it redirecting like it should be? Did you test it like I told you to?

If you’ve done all of the above, then just try a totally different type of

magazine altogether and start again.
