    That DayBy Adnan (Saudi Arabia)

When I was 9 years old, I went with my fatherto the supermarket like we used to every month. That day, the weather was nice, the sun was shining, and my father was happy. We left the house at about4 p.m. After that, my life changed. When we were onthe way to the supermarket, there was a driverescaping from the police on the other side of thestreet. My father was talking to me when that carsuddenly jumped over to our side of the street andcrashed into us, head-on. The next time I opened myeyes, I saw a nurse by my head. I was lying on ahospital bed! I asked, Where am I? and the nursesaid, Hes awake!! Then I saw my family coming to

me and they were so happy. What happened? Iasked. My family told me I was in a coma for 2weeks, but my father was fine. What happened tothe driver? I asked, and they told me he died. Icame out of the hospital a week later and stayed athome for the rest of the day. Now I am alwayscareful when I drive, and I never speed. The Most Important LessonsBy Neslihan (Turkey)

My parents taught me how to behave towardother people. In our culture and religion, it is veryimportant to be kind and respectful. It makesrelationships stronger. Also, they taught me to takecare of my other family members. Anytime they needsomething, I try my best to help them. Indeed, nobody lives alone, and the most important thing forhumans is to know how to treat one another. This notonly makes relationships stronger but also makes lifeeasier.

    WRITING FOUR

    War ProblemBy Abdirizak (Somalia)

War is a very serious issue because it killspeople and destroys the country. The causes of warare several things. But let me focus on three mainissues. They are politicians, corruption, and nopeace.

First, politician problems cause fighting. Forexample, when a president wants to keep stayingafter in office end of his term, but other leaders wantthat position. After the president ignores the electionor he doesnt care about civilization. Then the leadersstart a new organization or other groups that look forfreedom and are against the president. When yousee this kind of situation the next action will be to fightbecause this situation usually causes civil war. In acivil war, people kill each other and destroy thecountry with no reason. Also, some people may not

know where the problem comes from because theyare innocent.

Second, corruption causes bankruptcy in thecountry. For example, when government accountantssteal money or spend it in inappropriate places whichmakes the governments very weak. Therefore, thegovernment couldnt afford to pay employeessalaries, so every employee may be corrupt in theirresponsibility. Thus, bad management gains a lot ofproblems, for example, jobless, no productions, pooreducation and more.

Third, there is no life without peace. Peace isjust like the sea and its shoreline. Peace and justiceare love partners. They always go in a union ofharmony. If you miss one, you will miss the other. If

justice is the ocean of pleasure, peace is the moonstreaking on it like a twig and its budding flowers.Peace and justice live on each other. For example, ifthere is no life, there is no love. If there is no love, there is no peace. If there is no peace, there is no

justice. If there is no justice, there is no judiciary. Ifthere is no judiciary, there is no court. If there is nocourt, there are no rules or laws. If there are no rulesor laws, there is no state. If there is no state, there isno parliament. If there is no parliament, there are nopeople.

In conclusion, the reasons for war are severalthings: politician, corruption and no peace. Thepeople should know first the leaders whom they arechoosing. The English proverb says look before you

leap, which means consider doing elections in theright way.

How to Become RichBy Alejandro (Spain)

What most people look for in their lifetime isto get more and more money. Being rich is a goodway to own and buy whims that gives you pleasurefor a while or material things, that are sometimesuseless and annoying when accumulated. Maybe it

    3

    4/13

lets you give up working, but it is not nice seeingpeople dream to become rich and not realize that it isa joke compared with some seconds of realhappiness. To those people who want to know how tobecome a millionaire or perhaps a billionaire, I willgive them the magic formula to get it step by step.

The first step to become rich is just fixingyour idea of how rich you want to be. Do you thinkthis is nonsense? Well, the truth is this is the mostimportant step to get the goal. When I say how rich Imean, how much money would you like to have?Believe me the bigger your desire is the more youvalue and deserve. Then you will pass to the mostdifficult part: choose a date to get your goal. Bepositive but reasonable; dont expect a miraclebecause the product will be the fruit of your work. Thethird step is just waiting. If your desire was real youwill find an idea. In this moment leave everything, goand get it. Your wishes will be satisfied.

If you dont get any idea just wait, as muchtime as you take to find the idea the better the ideayou will find. If you dont find any idea or if the idea isthere and you dont follow it, it is because your

promise to yourself never existed. You dont trust inyourself, or perhaps your purpose wasnt real. Maybeyou werent honest with yourself when you thoughtyou deserved that or that was your value. In this casethere is another option, take the lottery and you mightwin without any risk or effort.

As you see it is so easy to become rich. Onlysome steps separate you from your noble desire, justtrust yourself. But remember that money doesnt giveyou happiness. Your felicity is in the little things, inyour friends, family, hobbies, and in yourself. Is itworth so much effort for not getting the real goal ofhappiness?

How important to have a challengeBy Cindy (Taiwan)

Smooth seas do not make skillful sailors African Proverb. If we always stay in a comfortableplace or dont want to do any difficult things. It will letus not to grow up and we cant have a lot of skills todo everything. So I have three ideas to definechallenge, including choices, learning, andconsequences.

First, I want to talk about choices ofchallenge; to begin with a good life. When we have afamily challenge, its a big problem in our life. If wecan solve it then we will grow up, and have a betterlife than before. Next, good health. We need to havegood health to have a challenge. It needs morecourage and power to do, then we succeed and willbe very happy and relaxed. Also, good personality isimportant. When we get more challenges, we will bemore mature to decide everything. And ourpersonality will be better and better. We can takecare of other families and friends. They will be proudof us.

Second, if we have learning of challenge,

we can learn a lot of things. One, learning languagecan let us talk to friends from other countries and wecan travel around the world, like, America, France,Japan, etc... Then we can see so many people fromdifferent countries and cultures. Its really fun to dothis kind of challenge. Not only can we improve ourlanguage, but we can also learn more knowledgefrom other people. Then learning how to drive a car isimportant and another challenge. For example, I candrive a car but always feel nervous when Im driving. After that, my daddy told me driving is not difficult. The only thing I have to do is practice and practicemore often then I will be better. For me, this is a bigchallenge in my life.

Third, after we got challenge then we willhave some consequences. One, it can help us easyto do and not be afraid to do everything. Maybe, weget a difficult job or problem, but we can still solve itand be happy all the time. Then if we have to face alot of different stress, because we have morechallenges before. We will not feel scared to make adecision or to settle. We will keep our mind free andeasy. Last, when we have hard things to do, we will

not give up easily. We can find some good friends tostraighten out the problems together. Its better thanby ourselves. So if we have more challenges, we willbe smarter in the world.

Finally, when we get more challenges, wecan do everything and try other things that wevenever tried before. And we have more opportunitiesto find a job or even a good friend. Then we will learnmore things. So I think challenge is more importantin our life and in the future.

    RecycleBy HyeYeon (S. Korea)

As the time is running, the environment willbecome polluted gradually. So, we are supposed topreserve our earth. We have some solutions.

First, we can use it as it is. Some peoplemake decorations with recycled things, such asbottles, fabrics, and plastics. For example, when Ibought cute bottles, after drinking from them, I usuallyuse them as a vase. That will be a good decoration.

Second, we can use items to repurpose andgive something another meaning. For example, inuniversity, my friends and I made a chair out ofpaper-pipe. The paper-pipe held a paper napkin. After it was used, it might be waste, but we created achair. It was very comfortable more than you think.

Third, the item will be completely different. We collect similar items and make new ones. Oneway of collecting is when you throw recycling that youhave and put it into separate trash baskets. And thena company comes and collects each, then make anew one. Sometimes companies collect in otherways. For example, in Korea, we collect milk packsmade by cartons and bring them to the company, andthen they come back as a napkin. Therefore, recycling items will create other shapes or meanings.

    4

  • 8/3/2019 The Globe - November/December 2010

    5/13

In conclusion, we can use items for reuse, repurpose and recycle. But the most importantsolution might be to recycle. Nevertheless, the worldwill be destroyed, if we cant recycle.

    FriendshipBy Imiliya (Belarus)

Friendship plays an important role in our lifeand although we may take the fact of friendship forgranted, we often dont clearly understand howfriendship is formed. On one hand, friendship is theemotions or conduct of friends, the state of beingfriends. On the other hand, I appreciate friendship, because its like a bridge between loneliness andfellowship, despair and hope, setbacks and success. It is a special thing.

We have two kinds of friends. First one issomeone, who you like to relax with or go to a cafwith. But second one is your best friend. Somepeople have one best friend, others have few.

Thats why Im proud of having my bestfriend. She is the person who understands me betterthan anyone else. We share every secret andunderstand each other so well that we finish eachothers sentences. Of course we may disagree onsome points, but we never quarrel. She is a goodlistener and doesnt fail to help. I know for sure thatmy friend will never let me down. It is a greathappiness to realize that your friend is always readyto help you. I do hope that we will be able, even 20years from now, call each other best friend.

So, in my opinion, a real friend is a personwho you trust and respect, who is a friend in need

and who never lets you down. There are no rules onhow to make friends. Usually friendship betweenpeople grows when they have common views, common interests and ambitions. Usually friendshave much in common: the same interests andattitude about life. A friend is someone you canalways open up to and a wonderful person whoalways believes in you in a way that no one elseseems to.

The future is always very important becausethey need to be successful in their life. However, thefuture is what you want it to be, what your dream isand how you can get it. Its important to make a planfor your future. The future includes education, object, and goals.

We need objects for life, like a big house and

car and furniture; with all of these you will besatisfied. If you study hard, your education will behigh and you will get a good job. With a good job, youcan get a good salary to buy all of these things.

The goals in your life will be what you did inyour life and what you got. If you did everything wellyou will get a good job and you will be married if youwant. You will also get a family to live a good life with. This is important to be comfortable all your life. Afteryou retire, you wont work or you will retire from yourwork, so you have time to enjoy your life.

    Car AccidentsBy Latifah (Saudi Arabia)

These days the rate of car accidents is rising. The people who have car accidents have seriousproblems. Car accidents effect people physically likeserious injuries or broken bones and most of thepeople are paralyzed. The rising rate of the caraccident has many causes like bad weather, lack ofconcentration, and careless drivers.

The careless drivers are the main cause for

the car accidents. The effect of alcohol has an impacton a drivers life. These drivers are about 40-45% oftraffic accidents. Alcohol causes crashes. Teenagerswho still cannot drive well, cause crashes in nothaving a driving license cause the most dangerousdriving. Women have fewer accidents than menbecause the men insists that he has skills on the roadwhile women are more concentrated and calm whendriving.

In winter season, many people die or haveserious problems with bad weather. The drivers havemore accidents in snow because of the difficulty ofdriving and control. Also in rainy season, driving is

more difficult. For example, some people have lessexperience because they moved to a place wherethere is a lot of snow. So when there is lots of snow,he may lose control of the car. This situation isserious, and may lead to bad accident.

There are other causes of car accidents onthe roads. Drivers lose concentration by talking oncell phones or by listening to loud music. Talking oncell phones causes 2,600 deaths and 330,000injuries in the US every year. Women sometimes puton make-up in the car which causes them to losetheir concentration. The noise of children in a car isalso dangerous which can lead to lack of concentration due to a bad traffic crash. Therefore, mental concentration is the most important thing fordrivers.

Car accidents are still the most dangerousthing increasing the rate of death. These accidentsalso lead to money issues and may lead to jail. At theend, car accidents are a global problem, whichpeople all around the world need to cooperate witheach other to control.

The person I would most like to meetBy Mohammed (Saudi Arabia)

    6/13

In this life for everyone there is one personwho they admire. For me, I would like to meet myprophet; his name is Mohammed. I would like to meethim to see what is happening now.

His name is Mohammed. He died about 1500years ago. He was a wise person. I remember a storyabout him. Someone was bothering him every dayand one day that person who bothered him becamesick. Mohammed visited him to see if he was okay. After that, the man entered our religion. That meanshe was a wise and respected person.

If I meet him today, I cant imagine that, and Iwant to ask him one question. I will tell him what ishappening and I will ask him to give me some adviceto keep the life good and about what I can do to makea lot of people, who are bad, good. I know itsimpossible to have that but I heard a story aboutsome people. They saw him in their dreams. For me,I love him more than myself. I know some peopledont know him, but that people who know him; theyknow what Im talking about.

Finally, he is unprecedented. I would like to

see him change what happenedthe bad thing in theworld. It is difficult for one person to change theworld, but if you dont know anyone you cant decidewho he is after you read or hear about him. He isMohammed. Read about him.

Stress of Modern LifeBy Sea Young (S. Korea)

How do you escape the stress of thedifficulties of modern life? Following that the modernworld has been developing, many people get stressfrom their life. Because stress can demolish not only

mental status, but also physical status, we aresupposed to escape the stress.

In my case, first thing that I choose to dowhen I have stress is sleeping. Sleeping is a specialoption to make stress release. That is why I want torecommend it when someone has big stress. Thoughit cant be solved right at that time, after you sleepyou can solve the problem with a clear mind. Secondis finding some activity that you can concentrate on.When you focus on something you needconcentration, then you will forget what you didbefore. It is the same way as when you hurt your littlefinger and then you cut your left leg, you only feelpain about the left leg. Psychologically, it means ifyou meet a bigger problem than you had before youmust concentrate on the bigger one. The last thing isto have a positive mind. We can always meet big andcomplicated problems. Every time you have stressfrom the problems, you head will explode soon. Takeit easy! If you have a calm mind, you can solve yourbig problems. Why not? Just do it!

Indeed, I said three ways to escape stress.Actually, nobody can exit from stress. There are waysto just release your stress, though. Because you havepassion, you get stress. Dont have stress because

you think only about the stress.

    StressBy Trang (Vietnam)

Nowadays, the society is more and moredeveloped. So, people always follow their work; theymust work hard to make a living, to grow theirchildren and support their needs. Thats why peoplesometimes get stress. So we need the best way ofreducing stress.

In work, people must work hard. If they dontwork hard, they can be laid off. So they must think ofnew projects for their company or they must showtheir imagination about the project which is supportedby their company. And then, people will get stresseasily. I think when we have a situation like that, weshould forget it. Find some things to do, such as:listening to music, watching movie, and talking toanother person who you truest, etc.

In family, people also get stress. Especiallywomen get stress easily. Because after they haveworked hard, they also have to take care of their

family and their children. They have lot of work to do,such as: considering about the education of children, working, cleaning up the house and teaching childrento have good behavior with other people, etc. Thatswhy you should understand women. I think womencan listen to music, watch movies, talk or tell a storyto children, talk with her husband, or go shopping torelieve stress.

After that, I think the best way of reducingstress is forgetting what made you stressed. Moreover, you can choose one of the solutions aboveto reduce stress. The stress is not good for yourhealth. For example, someone killed himself because

of the stress or someone became crazy because hegot stress. Therefore, you should do something toreduce the stress when you get it.

    WRITING FIVE

A Single World CultureBy Taewoo (S. Korea)

Recently, the world has changed to a single world culture by developing modern technology. Thousands ofpeople use smart phone, Internet and social networking such as iPhone, Google and Facebook. Thus, we cancommunicate with people who live in other countries more easily than in the past. Some culture experts indicatethat this situation might destroy each countrys unique culture. In contrast, I think a single world culture is beneficialfor the whole world.

First, opponents say if this situation remains continually, then perhaps each country will lose its ownculture. In addition, they claim that history and tradition will be lost by a single world culture. However, advocates ofsingle world culture have different ideas. Through modern technology, we can improve each culture creatively. Forexample, there is a new food, called fusion food, which mixes ingredients and recipes from various countries.

Likewise, other fields will be able to make new cross-cultural developments as well.Second, a few opponents claim that they dont agree with this situation because of religion. It is most

important for religious people. They think a single world culture is a kind of attack. They have strong beliefs aboutthat. On the other hand, if the world becomes a single world culture, I think a variety of conflicts relating to religionwill disappear. By communicating with other religions naturally, people will respect one another and they will beable to solve many problems.

Opponents think every culture must be protected and transferred to the next generation. They say that aunique culture is more valuable than money. They think culture is the sprit of their nation. I agree with this idea, because we cant buy each nations sprit. However, within a single world culture, we are still able to execute thepromise to pass on each culture to the next generation. Unless our generation doesnt try to pass down its culture, then probably each culture is combined by a single world culture. Nobody wants its own culture to disappear.Furthermore, each government of a country plans how to keep their unique culture and also how to improve theirculture for the next generation.

To sum up, we cant avoid the fact that the different cultures of the world will be changed increasingly moreby technology. We dont have to waste time avoiding this phenomenon. We can find a solution by thinkingpositively. I think development is better than preservation for every culture, and the entire world will benefit. In otherwords, a single world culture doesnt stand for one culture by modern technology. We should keep in mind that awide selection of cultures exists at the same time.

    Chernobyl EffectsBy Dominik (Switzerland)

In Chernobyl on April 26, 1986, there was a nuclear accident of catastrophic proportions. One theory is thatthis accident happened because reactor tests were not allowed. Also, they deactivated the safety system of thereactor during the test and ignored safety rules. Because of these many wrong decisions, the reactor exploded .This accident affected the whole world. The effects of this accident are constructing emergency containmentmeasures, many contaminated areas and illness.

After this terrible accident, they had to build a dome over the exploded reactor. But it was not easy to buildthis dome because the area was highly radioactive. First, they had to clean the area with robots. However therobots could only be used for a few days, because the waste was so radioactive that it destroyed the electronics. Then they sent people to these dangerous places to clean up. After that, they began to build the dome. The domewas finished one year after the accident. Only a few workers from this dome are still alive.

During the time without the protective dome, much radioactive smog went up to the sky. In the sky, theradioactivity entered clouds and went around the world. The radioactive level of the ground increased all over theworld. Some areas were so badly contaminated that they had to evacuate. Some of these areas are still closedtoday and will be closed indefinitely, because the contamination disappears very slowly. For example, in northGermany there is still too much radioactive contamination and because of that no one is allowed to eat themushrooms and the plants there.

    7

  • 8/3/2019 The Globe - November/December 2010

    8/13

Another effect is that this contamination throughout the world caused a lot of illness. There are some short-term health effects and immediate results. There has been an increase in thyroid cancer in children who werebetween 0 and 14 years old when the disaster occurred. The childhood thyroid cancers that have appeared are of alarge and aggressive type, but if the problem is detected early, then it can be treated. Also, there were long-termhealth effects. One of those is a birth defect called Down syndrome and many people became mentallyhandicapped. After the radioactive waste was distributed throughout Europe, two times more children were bornwith Down syndrome. Additionally, an increased incidence of thyroid cancer among children in areas of Belarus,Ukraine and Russia has been associated with the Chernobyl disaster. In conclusion, some effects of this accident are constructing emergency containment measures, manycontaminated areas and illness. Chernobyl is a good example of what can happen with atomic reactors. However, this incident happened only because of making experiments and ignoring the rules. In addition, they shut down thesafety system. I think an accident like that will never happen again because now everyone knows what can happenand they will never again shut down the safety system. In my opinion, atomic energy is a good thing. It is one of themost green energies that exist. Only water, wind or sun can generate electricity better. Atomic power plantsproduce only a little atomic waste and no pollutants in the air. However, the worlds horrifying experience with theChernobyl accident shows that an atomic power plant can be dangerous. Nevertheless, if humans use nuclearenergy correctly, then there should be no problems.

    Beneficial Laws in Saudi Arabia

    By Sattam (Saudi Arabia)

When Saudi Arabians travel around the world, there are some questions that people ask them. Forexample, people ask, Why dont you drink with us? Saudi Arabia is one of a few countries that makes its laws bythe principles of the Quran. There are two points people talk about when they think about Saudi Arabia -- notallowing alcohol and women must wear the veil. These laws are helpful for the society.

When it comes to alcohol, some people say its not a good idea to not allow people to drink, because thereare good benefits that we gain from alcohol. They say it will affect the economy of the country badly, because thepeople will spend their money by buying alcohol from the countries around it. I agree there are benefits; but on theother hand, there are bad effects, which are greater than the benefits. Islam says doing something to harm otherpeople is even worse than harming yourself. Alcohol is a big problem because it harms a persons body and it hurtsother people. One of the effects of alcohol is violence in the home. For example, a drunk father may beat hischildren each time he comes home, and sometimes that father rapes his children. Furthermore, in the countries thatdont allow alcohol, there arent drunk drivers who cause car accidents, which are a cause of harming or killingother people. Also, the people have a different attitude about alcohol. When people are raised in a community thatdoesnt drink alcohol, then they dont care if they can drink or not. So, they live a normal life without alcoholproblems. The only situation where alcohol is allowed is for medical treatment.

The opponents say that women who live in Saudi Arabia arent treated fairly by making women wear theveil and by making them stay at home instead of going to school or working because of Islam. However, Islamdoesnt prevent women from working or studying. In fact, Islam encourages men and women to study. Sometimes, there are some conservative cultures in some Islamic countries which prevent girls from studying. However, Islamrejects this practice. Its a cultural problem, not Islam. This cultural problem was common in the past, but now thereare very rare cases. Now the Saudi government helps women by lending them money to start their own business. For example, they can start their own restaurant. Its better, however, for a woman to stay at home to raise herchildren and to take care of her husband. Its better than when the woman works in an office or on the streets andher children are raised in a nursery. The main reason for the veil to cover a womans body is so the men willrespect her. They talk to her as a person, not as a body. Women could be like candy. If you dont cover the candy, then the flies will be around it. Most women make their own decision to cover themselves. Their parents make themto cover themselves when they are teenagers to help them to get used to it. As adults in the U.S., the Muslimwomen students have the option to cover themselves or not. However, most women still choose to wear the veil.

In conclusion. Saudi Arabia is a country that made their law by the principles of the Quran. The lawprohibits drinking alcohol. So, there are a lot of problems caused by alcohol. And women in Saudi Arabia must wearthe veil when they want to go outside from their home. There are many benefits to the whole society from usingQuran principles in Saudi Arabias laws.

    A Shopping TraditionBy Aida (Egypt)

Black Friday is the day following Thanksgiving in the USA. It is the busiest shopping day of the year. Thereare big discounts in many stores such as Walmart , Best Buy, Electronic Express, Target and many other stores .This phenomenon is not only in the United States but also in Canada. I think on that day, the economy of both theU.S and Canada will be raised. There are many people waiting for this day from year to year. These people willneed to buy more merchandise than they need because the prices are good.

Black Friday is the best day for many stores. The stores prepare many products with a good deal for thatday such as computers, T.V, and GPS. There are many electronics, clothes and Kids toys. The stores arecrowded because there are many people coming to buy and sell. People will wake up very early to compete witheach other to stand in a big line to be able to get the products. Because the store manger announces that there arelimited numbers of products, the first fifty people will be able to buy, but the late shoppers wont get special deals,so most of the people on that day are very worried about the merchandise. Therefore, most of them follow themagazine , newspaper, and the TV advertisements to decide which store to visit on Black Friday. Some people willwake up very early, about 3:00 am. Others who can't sleep come to the stores the night before. After eating aturkey dinner on Thanksgiving, the Black Friday shopper prepares warm clothes and carries a chair and somesnacks to be ready to stand in a long line for a long time. After standing in line all night, they wait their turn to getthe product. Some stores open at 5:00 am; and the first shoppers will get good deals. If a person goes shopping aslate as 5:00 am, then that person has some big disappointments!

    SuicideBy Amenah (Saudi Arabia)

Humans have always had suffering as a part of their life. 10 to 20 million people consider suicide as asolution each year throughout the world, even though Judaism, Islam, and Christianity forbid it. Just in America, where the majority of the people follow Christian traditions, about 30,000 people annually kill themselves. Despiteall the ethical and religious principles, suicide has been supported as an individual decision, and various countriesconsider it to be illegal. In my opinion, suicide is a crime, and supporting it is an aberration of common sense. Theopponent argues that suicide is each persons distinctive right and his proprietary choice. Also some suicidesupporters argue that it is acceptable since its impact affects just the actor himself.

Suicide advocates claim that its the highest level of freedom due to giving obeisance to others decisions, even if it was to terminate their life. I would agree that each decision should be respected if it was issued by theowner. But when the judgment is about a right that is not owned by the decision maker, then it couldnt berespected. Consequently, the question which has to be posed is, is our life an ownership we have? First of all, whatdoes own mean? The Atlas dictionary says: to own something means it belongs to someone rather than beingcontrolled or shared with someone else. So do these terms apply to life? People have never had a chance to

decide to be born, to stop dying, or to go back to life after death. Hence, the control term is not fulfilled by us, but itmust be controlled by someone else. As a monotheist, I would say God is the controller, and the only owner. We allhave the right to live our life, but we dont have the right to end it. Your soul is a borrowed responsibility, just likeyour responsibility to raise your child. You have to take care of it, but even if it is in some part yours, then you donthave the right to kill it. But when the right time comes, it will leave you whether you want or not. Do not be mercilessto your little baby - your soul.

The highest level of giving up responsibilities, suicide, has supporters who deny that it affects others. Whenpeople were born, they came for a purpose, and as a consequence of living in a society, they have had manyobligations, some of them they could have ever thought about. In Islamic history Ali Ben Abitahlib said, Do youthink you are a small being in the world, while (the reality is) the whole world is inside you? That means your realinfluence in the world is bigger than what you have ever thought. Our life society is just like a chemical equation, every small part makes a difference, even if it was not seen by the naked eye. For example, a story happened along time ago, when a poor man saw a little boy sinking in some mud. The poor man helped the little boy. The nextday, the boys rich father came and offered to pay for the education of the poor mans son to thank him. The poormans son grew up and studied to become a doctor. His name was Alexander Fleming, and he became famous fordiscovering penicillin, which has helped millions ever since. A few years later, the wealthy mans son was strickenwith pneumonia, and Flemings discovery of penicillin saved him. Maybe the purpose of the poor mans life was tosave millions by saving the rich mans son from the mud. And probably he had other purposes for his life he hadnever thought about. When people kill themselves, they decide to give up their lifes purpose. Another fact is thatsuicide is a selfish action, You ignore all people who love you, and take away their right to have you with them. Forexample, when a parent decides to raise a child, they entrust the child an allotment of their soul. As the child isgrowing up, the parents are going to remember all the tiring days they have to go through, but they smile. Theyare going to be proud because their little seed is fully developed. How can people who believe in suicide ignoreparents rights and decide that its only their issue? I believe that is an egoist. In brief, each person is effective in theworld and to the people around him somehow, even if he doesnt realize it.

    10/13

To sum up, people who are not looking at suicide deeper are going to assume that killing yourself is abrave action. I will rebut that its a coward conduct because the person who commits suicide determines to ignorethe right that even animals refuse to renounce it, which is the right to live your life. There are always solutions foreach problem, maybe you just didnt look at it. Suicide is a judgment that all the ability that a person has is notadequate anymore. When more than 30,000 people kill themselves annually, this is a disaster for human race. Ourworld would be much better if each person who thinks of committing suicide would direct his ability to improve onething in the world.

IPTV The Inevitable Destiny for the TelevisionBy Sonya (Spain)

The Internet is becoming a public service utility allowing access to the content. IPTV or Internet protocoltelevision is another way to consume media content. This technology allows viewers to watch television that isbeing broadcast into their home on a broadband network, as opposed to the standard ways of satellite and cable. However, the broadcasting industry argues that the future of television will be digital TV instead of Internet-TV.Even though broadcasters are pushing digital TV, the consumer demand indicates there is more interest in Internet-TV. IPTV marketing research shows that it has had an explosive growth over the last 12 months. According toforecasts from the analyst firm Strategy Analytics, IPTV will continue to grow at 31% per year to reach 83 million by2013.

The future of broadcasting has been under discussion for a long time and while the IPTV technology iscertainly happening, broadcasters are focusing on digital TV or cable. They argue that the widespread availability ofdigital TV emphasizes adding TV-based good quality entertainment to their offerings. But, nothing compares withthe idea to give people what they have wanted for years, easy-to-use, live Internet TV anytime. An IP-based

platform also allows significant opportunities to make the TV viewing experience more interactive and personalized. The supplier may, for example, include an interactive program guide that allows viewers to search any content.

The opponents have more reasons to support this idea alleging that not everyone has Internet. Only 75percent of homes have Internet connection, while 99 percent have TV (Nielsen). However, in the USA it isestimated that in 2011 more than a quarter of all TV sets will be Internet-enabled. In fact, major TV manufacturersalso show their position. Sony, for example, has announced a content platform that will deliver 15 new internetprotocol TV channels over a household broadband connection direct to the TV set. The company said that wouldbe available on 21 of 26 models from next months and marketed under the slogan "TV on your terms". Anotherexample that could determine the path of the TV future is the vision of Apple TV. Through a modest and cheap box(US99), with a simple click on the screen, apps can be activated that will deliver TV Apple TV content on the normalTV screen. This new release of Apple TV is going to further damage the pay TV (cable TV) business model.

Traditional TV using digital cable offers benefits over its analog counterpart, including high definition, bettersound, and a wealth of features, like more channels, interactive program guides, and video on demand. Digital

cable gives you everything you are accustomed to with regular cable, a selection of programming packages, including all of your local channels in which some broadcasting is in HD. Nevertheless, IPTV's supporters thatpromote the free content within a diversified format are not agreeing with big media that limit consumers choice. Its not too late for cable companies to recognize that their existing business models are quickly becoming obsoletewhile their customers demand more options, added Todd Weaver, founder and CEO of ivi TV.

Moreover, because IPTV requires real-time data transmission and uses the Internet Protocol, it is sensitive topacket loss and delays if the streamed data is unreliable. If the IPTV connection is not fast enough, picture break-up or loss may occur. Thus, in zones where broadband infrastructure is lagging behind, broadcasters perhaps havean opportunity to become players in this market via the digital TV technology. However, it will be a matter of timethat soon there will be a big change, according to recent hints in press release comments by the U.S. President. These new priorities of the Obama administration are indicative of the way that systems installation is capable ofimproving the efficiency of existing facilities, said Frank MacInnis from the Obama administration recently. Inaddition, some sources speculate that Cisco will announce a broadband plan that counters Googles plan for anultrafast 1 Gb per second network. Indeed, this is further evidence that the Government is making Internet TVpossible.

For the US government IPTV could be an economic stimulus plan. However, it is not only an opportunity tobring the world of TV to a new way to experience television but also opens a new market that is much morecompetitive. As a result, it is creating opportunities for application developers, content providers and technologycompanies alike.

In conclusion, even though the persistence of the broadcasting industry in continuing with the traditional TVbusiness model, there are very strong reasons to believe that the destiny to an open and diversified model isinevitable. This evolution in TV systems could have a dramatic impact on politics, the economy and the generallifestyle of people in developed countries throughout the world.

    WRITING FIVE/SIX

Are We Too Dependent on Our Computer?By Jin Hwa (South Korea)

The computer is one of the amazing inventions in our life. According to one 2005 study by Seagate, 76percent of American adults own a personal computer, including older people who do not know how to use it. Itmeans that almost all college students and white collar employees who need a computer to do their homework and

jobs have and use a computer. White collar employees who work on a computer in their office often own acomputer at home for their family members. Many people are concerned that we humans are too dependent oncomputers for our every day life tasks. Therefore, it is possible for us to forget our ability to perform mentalcalculations. However, I believe that using computers is helpful for our children to learn widely, easily connect withothers, and improve the quality of their homework.

Some of the recent research has pointed out that our children are exposed to too many unnecessaryweb-sites and this can cause the destruction of their mental ability and physical performance. As a result, childrenare losing their mental skills and ability to distinguish between abstraction and actuality in life. Children do not getinterested in outside activities or sports which puts them in a more isolated environment. However, there are many

ways to split childrens attention to control the amount of time children use the computer. We can make afascinating plan for pulling childrens minds from the computer to other events. For example, we can go to watch anentertaining movie with them or take a trip with their friends, such events are enough to pull them away from theircomputer and broaden their interests. However, children can be affected positively by using computers in theirlearning because computers help increase childrens interest by the use of sound and sight. In addition, childrencan get a variety of images with lectures; for example, when children learn about the history of the Eiffel Tower, theteacher can show them 3D images and their brains are stimulated.

Now we are living in an information world. Computers are used every place in businesses, offices, andhospitals. Before we started using computers, we were able to make an appointment to meet coworkers in a roomand we had a lot of opportunities to talk face to face and build up strong relationships. Now with the use ofcomputers, we always hurry to send e-mails without thinking carefully, as a result, we sometimes get into troublebecause of misunderstandings. However, while we are using computers, our efficiency has had a wonderful growth.Even though we cannot meet our employees frequently in the same building, we can meet our coworkers anytimeand anywhere even though they are far away.

Students assignments have changed compared to thirty or forty years ago in Korea. At that time, wedid not have much writing homework to do. Many people worry that students are too dependent on the computerwhen they do their homework. Students easily approach the objective questions in each subject by using thecomputer instead of using books or paper, as a result, there are many students who wear glasses earlier and thelenses are thicker. When students sit down in front of the computer they often access unnecessary information andwaste their time. However, schools can teach students how to use the computer correctly in order to cultivate theirminds and improve their learning skills without wasting time. Students have to research references to write anessay. They can get broad information by using the Internet wisely and it provides good opportunities for them toread because there are many articles available to be read.

In conclusion, many people worry that using computers constantly will affect our childrens health andrelationships with others. Therefore, we will continue to develop software that blocks detrimental sites. Somechildren and people are attracted to the computer; however, by showing them our concern, their interests can bedivided to other area. In addition, the computer helps us to finish our work faster and more accurately.

Capital Crimes OnlyBy Moataz (Saudi Arabia)

A death penalty, it is also called capital punishment, is the sentence of execution for murder and someother capital crimes, such as pre-meditated murder, kidnapping resulting in death, running a large-scale drugorganization, and treason (US Legal). On the 1st of April 2008, the death penalty was legal in 37 states in U.S, thefederal government, and the U.S military. On the other hand, there are 13 states which don't include the deathpenalty in their constitution. Most of the states that have the death penalty require that the criminal be of a certain

age. But, there are some exceptions in which it is legally allowed to execute a minor under some circumstances.Statistics show that most executions have taken place in Texas (Clark Prosecuting). Capital punishment wascreated to punish those who commit severe offenses. Despite the fact that there is a vast group of citizens thatoppose the death penalty and consider it as unfair punishment, I see it as justice.Opponents who fight against thedeath penalty cite the Eighth Amendment to the US Constitution which says that the US cannot use "cruel andunusual" punishment. While punishments are made to make those who commit heinous crimes suffer and pay fortheir offenses, it has to include some of cruelty. Otherwise, nobody will have a fear of committing severe crimes. Infact, there may no purpose for the whole criminal justice system without harsh punishment. Concerning the word"unusual," according to the Death Penalty Information Center, the death penalty has been legally used for morethan four hundred years in the U.S. From that we can simply tell that it is usual punishment. Obviously, the deathpenalty is completely constitutional because, as I mentioned earlier, it does not break the Eighth Amendment whichis the most powerful argument with which the opponents fight against the death penalty.People who disagree withthe death penalty demand that every single person, despite what he/she has done, has the right to live and, on theother hand, no one, even justice, can rape that right. Supporters partly agree with that. Everyone is born with theright to live but this can be affected by what he/she does. The right to live can simply be taken away in extremecases.

A recent example of an extreme case where the death penalty was given was the Petit case in the state ofConnecticut. The Petit family used to consist of the parents and two daughters. The first daughter was 17 years oldand the other one was 11 years old. Three years ago, two criminals broke into the Petit family's house in order tosteal the family's money. They first attacked the father with a baseball bat and tied him up in the basement. Afterthat, they stole the family's money and they raped the two daughters along with their mother. The father, afterlosing a great deal of blood, finally broke free. He thought that he could not over take the two men at the same time.So he decided, with his feet tied together, to leave the house by the back door and call the neighbors. At this time,

the criminals tied the mother and the two daughters to their beds upstairs and burned the house which caused thedeaths of the mother and the two innocent daughters (The Cheshire Herald, September 16, 2010 by Josh Morgan.)In Petit Family Killings, the writer says about the verdict:

More than three years later, on Oct. 5, 2010, one of the suspects, Steven J. Hayes, was convicted for hispart in the brutal invasion. The jury deliberated less than one full day before reaching a verdict, after hearing weeksof often gruesome testimony, and with more than 200 pieces of trial exhibits to sift through. On Nov. 8th, the juryvoted to impose the death penalty on Mr. Hayes. Do you think that those cold-blooded criminals deserve to live? Inmy opinion, lost dogs are more valuable than they are. Some opponents also say that life imprisonment as apunishment would successfully replace the death penalty. This decision would produce an escape for people whoare incapable to live on their on for a variety of reasons. For example, if there is a homeless person who is sick ofhis life, his only concern is to find a bit of food to survive and a safe place to spend the night. He would think, underthe conditions of not having the fear of being executed, of simply committing a crime in order to enter the prisonwhere they provide food, beds, and also blankets. We should also consider that the same person would think of

attempting a robbery that can guarantee a week, for example, of good food. At the very worst consequence he willlive the rest of his life in prison which is, in fact, a better place for him. Indeed, think of that carefully, what wouldhappen if life imprisonment is the maximum punishment? According to Paul Van Slambrouck, " Assaults in prisonsall over US, both against fellow inmates and against staff, have more than doubled in the past decade, according tostatistics gathered by the Criminal Justice Institute in Middletown, Connecticut" (Christian Science Monitor,Internet.) In short, that will eventually increase the number of the crimes and give an incentive to desperate peopleto make wrong decisions. Other opponents argue with the fact that some people on death row are innocent andcompletely clear of any crimes. Nevertheless, this argument is totally irrelevant to the death penalty as a bannedpunishment. Actually, that is related to the judges and their credibility. In other words, death row is just animplementation of the judges decision. So, if you think that this is injustice you should have been talking to the

judges themselves instead of arguing about the death penalty. From my perspective, those who argue against thedeath penalty using this point are like those who would prevent the production of planes in order to deter events like9/11.In brief, criminals and crimes are now everywhere. Our duty is to take action against crimes and deter them inorder to save citizens rights. As explained earlier, arguments against the death penalty don't exist. On the otherhand, benefits do exist. The death penalty is absolutely a deterrent because, clearly, it cannot be changed after ithas been carried. Indeed, the death penalty is very carefully considered and only imposed in cases with convincingevidence. For instance, the death penalty is not considered for people who kill under conditions of self-defense andtimes of passion. This, obviously, shows the lenient side of the death penalty which most opponents dismiss.Simply, the death penalty performs a typical punishment for capital crimes and brings justice to the criminal and theinnocent as well."Capital Punishment Essay: Benefits of the Death Penalty." 123HelpMe.com. 14 Nov 2010

How Fast Food Has Influenced Our lives

    By Sultan (Saudi Arabia)

What is fast food? It is junk food that restaurants sell which is poisoned in with fat. These fast foods includefries, burgers, nuggets, shakes, sodas, and other items. There is an open invitation to every intelligent person tofind out what has caused the change in dietary patterns of communities, and how that change could that affect usdeeply. There are two effects that have already had a bad influence on all of our lives, which are health problemsand childhood obesity.

In the first place, most of these quick and convenient meals contain a high amount of sodium, whichincreases and aggravates the risks of high blood pressure. Also, sodium can lead to a buildup of fluids for thosewho are suffering with congestive heart failure, cirrhosis, or kidney disease. In addition, meat contains cholesteroland leads to the accumulation of bad cholesterol in the body. It can cause a heart attack because cholesterolmolecules can accumulate in the arteries and lead to clogging of the arteries and that leads to obstructed bloodflow.

Pursuing this further, the number of obese children has been increasing in the USA, because of the effectsof eating fast food. Statistics show that between 10% and 15% of children are already obese. Many parents andtheir children, instead of eating a healthy well balanced meal, are turning to fast food for a quick meal. Researchsays that children gain weight because fast food is typically high in calories and comes in large portions. Also, research has showed that fast food has unacceptable levels of trans fat. Trans fats have a significant effect on thebody and may contribute to weight gain and abdominal obesity. Scientists said that when children become anaddicted to eating fast food, it will be very hard to quit the same as a smoking addiction.

To sum up, the two aspects that show how fast food affects our life are health problems and childhoodobesity. After we know some of the effects of eating fast food, a thought will come to mind: why didnt thegovernment ban such foods because they are bad for us. They wont want to lose millions of dollars that the fast

food industry brings. However, they have recently prohibited the sale of fast food and soft drinks from schools insome states in America.
