    FriendshipBy: Hussain Koraisha (Saudi Arabia)

Do you have friends? Everyone should have a close friend. The dictionary says friendship means: afriendly relation or intimacy. In my opinion, best friends are the people with who I feel safe to talk to when I ammad, sad, and hurt. A friend is someone you can trust with anything. Friendship at school is the greatest thing.

First of all, talk to anyone and they will say that they only talk with their close friend and tell him what your

problem is and what the things are that make you sad or mad and you will feel better when you share what youfeel. For example, last year I wanted money and my best friend gave me some.

Secondly, at school there are a lot of benefits to making friendships at school. For example when theteachers give me lessons and I dont understand them, the only one who can help me to understand it and explainit to me is my friend.

Finally, a friend is someone you can trust with anything. For example, I told my friendthat I was going to the U.S. to learn English, and I was afraid to go there. He told me I trust you. You can go tothe U.S and learn English well.

In short, if you have a close friend, you should be able to keep your friend. In my opinion, I feel comfortablewhen I speak to my close friend so you should have a close friend when you want to feel safe.

    FreedomBy: Bader Alamri (Saudi Arabia)

Freedom is the state of being allowed to do what you want to do. You have to know that there is aresponsibility that comes with freedom. There are people who accept freedom and others do not.

The people close to you will usually be patient if you exaggrate about something. You must always becautious because freedom might be limited from one person to another. For example, the freedom of speech letsyou say whatever you want. You are permitted to complain and make opinions if it is allowed in your country.

Freedom my be different in one country. The Internet says, "This means that the protection of freedom ofspeech as a right includes not only the content, but also the means of expression."

In conclusion, you have to be attentive to your freedom. There is a distinction among people aboutfreedom. Freedom is very amazing, but we have to know how to use it.

    HappinessBy: Hadwan Alhadrami (Saudi Arabia)

Happiness is in your hand. There are many ways to be happy, but there are several ways to succeed. However, some people build their happiness on destructive things such as drugs, gambling, and alcohol. Theseways lead to sadness not happiness.

Happiness comes suddenly to you, but if you have three main things which are God, education, and family

you will be happy. God is who created you and everything in this world. Now do you want to be happy without Him?

The second thing is education, which is most important for living. For example, if you are the manager in abig company you just have one job for a new employee and you have ten men apply for this job - how can youchoose one of them? It is simple. You will choose by their certifications and qualifications. You will choose the bestone.

Finally, there is family. There is no life with family. Why? Because no one in this life cares and worriesabout you like them, you are a piece of them. You came fro their body and you are their child until you die.

Overall, happiness comes from God, family, and education. With these you can increase your level ofhappiness.

The NewsBy: Rayan Alghamdi (Saudi Arabia)

Some people want to know about anything in this world like the economy, policy, sports, and a lot of otherevents happening around the world. For me I always watch and listen to the news because I want to know about allthe things. I also like to talk about what has happened to Palestine and what people are saying about this.

Two weeks ago I was in Nashville and I watched the news. The news said that Real Madrid andManchester United would come to Michigan to play a soccer match. I was excited because my favorite team will

play in America. So, on August 1st I went to Michigan to see the match. I was so glad because I watch the newsevery day and if I did not watch I would have missed the game. I was very lucky because there were more than onethousand nine hundred people at the match, and I was one of them. This was the first time in the U.S. that I hadbought a ticket for such a huge event.

In my opinion, it's very important to know about all of the things happening in our world like problems, money, sports, and technology.

Living a Long TimeBy: Mohammed Qerisha (Saudi Arabia)

Have you heard that there are people living a long time? We have all heard this, so what is the reason forthis when we think about the present and the past? It may be what we are eating and hospitals providing care.

First of all, in the past they did not have good food to eat for their health. But now we have a lot of food, sopeople now have good health and are living longer. For example, one day my grandfather had many problems withhis body and he didn't move from his bed. However, his son was in good health and he could do anything hewanted.

Secondly, the presence of hospitals is very important. Before there were not many hospitals and whensomeone was sick he couldn't go there for care. But now we have many hospitals in the world. My grandfather oncesaid, "In the past when I was sick I couldn't move or eat. I just stayed in my bed and your grandmother stayed withme because we didn't have a hospital."

In short, improving the quality of our food and hospitals are most important. So, in my opinion, if you eathealthy food and go to the hospital you will live for a long time.

The Kind of FriendsBy: Abdulaziz W. Alhamdi (Saudi Arabia)

You, I, and everyone needs good friends. When you live alone, I think you have a boring and hard life. Youshould live with friends in your life, but you have to know that life has many secrets about friendship. There aresincere friends and insincere friends.

Life with sincere friends is so comfortable and wonderful. But how can one get sincere friends? You shouldknow that the two qualities that I think are the most important in friends are honesty and friendliness. For example, honest friends would also keep a close eye on my purse and not let anyone else go through it or steal anythingfrom it. Another example, if you need help, they should or they have to help you. Those are the best friends.

Life with insincere friends is short. How can you know if a friend is sincere or not? Insincere friends likepeople who have what they like or want. For example, some friends like to make friends with people who have a lotof money, an expensive car, or a big house. Why? They want to have and use those things in their life. You have toidentify those kinds of people and you should not make friends with them.

Everybody likes to make friends, but you have to know how you can choose sincere friends. You must be

    careful about that.

Where Should You Go for Vacation?By: Aracely Castellanos Pena (Honduras)

When you are looking for places to vacation, you have many options from which to choose. I think the mostcommon places people go for vacation are the mountains or the beach. For example, you can choose whether tovacation in the Smoky Mountains in Asheville, N.C. or go to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Both places offer a lot ofactivities that cater to families - especially to children. There are many restaurants, theme parks, and tourist

    9

attractions offered in both areas that make them good vacation spots. Also, there are many places to shop andmany local activities. Both places offer many different things making it difficult to choose.

However, if you like forest areas, you can choose to go to the Smoky Mountains in any season. There aremany options for lodging and hotels. The have cabins that are very comfortable and fully equipped. For example, you can go to the Gatlinburg Smoky Mountain Cabins or Pigeon Forge Cabins. Finally, you can visit famous placeslike Catalooche Valley, Ripley's Haunted Adventures, and the Gatlinburg Space Needle. If you like wildlife you cando many activities outside like horseback riding, walking on trails, taking scenic drives, and water adventures. If you

like shopping you can visit the historic and go to many gift shops. Also, you can visit museums.

On the other hand, if you like oceans, seas, and beaches you have an option to visit Myrtle Beach. Thereare a lot of hotels about two hundred sixteen of them! Myrtle Beach has interesting places to visit such as MyrtleBeach State Park, Myrtle Waves, and Freestyle Music Park. You can also find many restaurants and attractions. You cannot forget that the main point of going is to go to the beautiful beaches. You can enjoy the sand, swimming, playing volleyball, playing soccer, riding water bikes, and viewing the beautiful sunsets at Myrtle Beach.

In conclusion, it doesn't matter where you choose to go. Both places have fun things to do for vacation. Youcan relax, spend time with your family, and forget, at least for a little while, your routine life!

Living Longer and BetterBy: Leonardo Cubarenco Bucky (Brazil)

Since the beginning of the 20th Century people have been living longer and better. This phenomenon canbe seen in all parts of the world. But what are the reasons for this fact?

With the bourgeous revolution and the following industrial revolution, many people have moved from thecountry to the city. This change affects the way of life for people. They have more contact with healthy ways liketoilets, bathrooms, potable water, garbage collection, sewers, fresh food, and more. Just when the people start totake care of their wealth, good food, and hygiene it results in people living longer and better.

But all of this progress did not come for free. History shows us that the principal reason for thedevelopment of people is 'capitalism'. To pay for all of this requires investment in the infrastructure in the cities.First, money is necessary and then technology.

In an environment of freedom people can work more, produce more, and receive more salary. Only thismakes it possible to buy and build these facilities.

    Animal RightsBy: Zaid Alfadel

Some people keep arguing about animal rights because of it is animal right can not work properly, there isstill not clear caused and with it can be worked. The government and people should protect animal from killing or dotesting or do research of animals, because animals have the same rights as human.

In my opinion people should not kill animals because animals have the right to live, and killing animals willeffect the environment. Some people say how about the wild animals? Wild animals have the same rights to liveexcept in some situation such as, if the wild animals attack people or some people animals. So, in this situationpeople have to kill them to protect themselves or their animals. Animals are complex subjects. People mustreconsider their actions upon animal there something wrong and hot. According to people for the Ethical treatmentof Animals (PETA.org.)

Government should to keep some animals almost disappear save, and they have to take care of them. Also, they should provide a good environment to make them feel comfortable, and let them breed. Also, thegovernment has to inhibit people to visit them. Such as, the while lion because while lion almost disappear. Thereare only three in Africa and people still thinking to kill them. Others who are rich want to buy them to make themfamous, because they have it, and make them safe. In my country there are a lot of animal reserves to make theanimals, which have almost disappeared, more safe. Other thing the Johns Hopkins University center ofalternatives to Animal testing (CAAT) has worked with scientist since 1981 to find new methods to replace the useof laboratory animals in experiments tested , and refine necessary tests to eliminate pain and distress. According to

In conclusion, animals should be protected from everyone and animals have the same rights as humans.Animals cannot stick up for themselves when they get in jams with humans. I respect everyone opinions but Idisagree to kill animals.

Social Media harms people and should be bannedBy: Anne-Claire AC Floquet (France)

Privacy life is gone, stop to use technologies! Social Media has revolutionized the world. It hascreated many changes. These profound modifications have great advantages for people and several

opportunities for business. They generate other complications with respect for privacy and relevance ofinformation.

Social Media is a virtual interface, which is allowed to share or to exchange information and ideaswith all people. It is the social interaction like a virtual communities; because, all people are connected atInternet with their computer or their phone. In the book Networked The new social operating systembyLee Rainie and Berry Wellman explain that Social Media allow use document memories learning andexploring all things, advertising oneself and forming friendships. According to the authors demonstratethat with the Egyptian revolution in 2011; because, people created appointments and protest actions withFacebook. That is wrong because the withdrawal has caused partly with Social Media. People livebehind their computer. They think that to discuss via laptop is the same as face-to-face. People createjust a virtual world, which unhook them of the real world. It is superfluous. Moreover according to Sephen

Marche in book Is Facebook making us lonelywrote that Social Media gives the impression at people toreply at a specific humans request like relationships, but this is nothing. He told that Social Media issubstituting the meetings in public places.

People use Social Media, the reason is it allows get quickly information on all subjects and theuse is very easy. Social Media become an excellent tool to help students. Now it is the most frequentlyused in the classroom. Opponents tell us that YouTube boosted the productivity and the participation ofstudent. Besides students discover new digital skills which will help them to resolve problems in future.Furthermore the videos are a good way to recall information and visualize the real world for students.(Sherer and Shea 2011) The fact is Social Media contains too much information. All people can publishtheir knowledge but sometimes they are wrong! Consequently it is very hard to trust certain SocialMedias. When people would like to get information, they should verify information relevancy. Lee Rainie

and Barry Wellman told that it is very ease to become a contents, everybody are connected and can dothat. (L.Rainie and B.Wellman, 2012). However Reuters Institute Digital new report 2013demonstratespeople who are between 24-25 years old trust Social Media; while older people dont trust it.

Social Media has reflated business. It is a creator of employ; because now, some companies useSocial Media to sale and to put in the international limelight. In an article Social Media revolution is achance for small firms to slay some Goliaths,by David Mc Williams feels that Social Media is a disruptivetechnology for business because it offers many opportunities for small companies again to be presentinto business and to recapture market shares. Social Media can allow at this firms to export theirproducts and services but also to advertise them. (www.independant.ie, 27/11/2013) This is not true

because Social Media is a hiring criterion. It doesnt respect the privacy protection. There are no limitswith Social Media between private life and professional life. All information about someone can be seenby anyone. According to new CarrerBuilder survey said Social Media used by employers as a tool tofiltrate employee profiles. Sometimes it is ethical problem because it creates discrimination foremployees, but also creates internal problems in the companies between employees and employers. Incertain cases, the employers dont hesitate to use Facebook to justify a layoff. Besides in a 2009 studyshows 45 percent of employers used Social Media to screen job candidates. (CareerBuilder, 11/06/13)

Social Media is a great invention for the world but they have transformed our life. Social Mediacan be excellent sources getting information and learning knowledge on all topics but also makingthemselves known. Maybe in the future, there are dismal days about Social Media because people whouse the technologies are always monitored and tracked. We are all users and victims!

Government should support single parentsBy: Yusuke Yoshida (Japan)

Dont go it alone! Supports for children, not only for parents, are a real goal to solve this problem. Itis very difficult for to raise children without cooperation from their spouse. I dont doubt this difficulty; however, it is

important for us to check the necessities for supports from government. We should think about necessities and thenwe should consider how we support single parents. There are a lot of families in the world, in addition singleparents have a complicated situation. So the type of supports must suit the type of family.

First others say 49 percent of single parents are divorcees. Thus they can say that single parentschoose divorce by themselves and the government should not support them. But there are many never marriedsingle parents with child. Especially in United States there is a higher rate than other countries. For instance, 40percent of children in the U. S. are with unmarried single parents.

Opponents tell us the mean age of parents at first birth is 25.8 years old and single parents gettheir first child earlier than couple parents. But that is not true because less than 2 percent of single parents areteenagers. So single parents are equal to couple parents in age at first birth.

Those who dont agree on poverty of single parents say they can earn enough money because themedian age of single parents is 38.4 years old. But that is not true because children in single parent families aretwice as likely as children in couple parent families to be poor. Government has a duty to save anyone who suffersfrom poverty. Single parents must be supported to protect their children.

Supports for single parents by government have a very important role for both parents and children. There is no perfect way to solve this problem. Think about this problem as your problem and look for best solution.

Education isnt important for a successful lifeBy: Hanaa Alghamdi (Saudi Arabia)

Give me luck and throw me in the sea! 85% of students work hard and they get a degree from their schoolsand colleges. But when they face life, they cannot find a suitable job or one that they deserve. Lacking a degreedose not mean a person will not succeed. There are several factors that make a good life for people, not justeducation or high degree.

Those who dont agree say that some professions require that you have a degree or certification that provesthat you have been exposed to some level of study and achieved some level of proficiency in a particular subject. That is wrong because people dont necessarily need degrees to be employable. Different companies and placesneed people who have skills and experience to get a job. People who relate with those said that if someone getslucky and is born into a wealthy family, he could get a job easier without any effort

    12

Others say that a degree from college is most important for all of us. It helps a person to show their best bytheir mind, spirit and skills. This is not true because lacking a degree was not meaning a person would not succeed. Some people study subjects they do not like, because they have not choice to study whatever they like, just accepttheir fact. Therefore they can get high degree in their schools but they can succeed in life when they do a thing theylike. Many people in our history have succeeded without having college or even high degree.

Those who dont agree say that the survey results based on interviews with more than 1,4000 Americansthat say a college education is essential for anyone who wants to have a successful life. 77% of people say that

getting high education is more important than it was 10 years ago. The fact is that moral more important forsuccess. There are many examples during history that show us even with good education, one might not succeedin life, because of the lack of the morals. For example, professor Tey Tsun Hany a law professor at NationalUniversity of Singapore was involved in a recent sex for grades case. Professor Tey had a good education but alack of morals.

So, luck is very important for successs life. Although education is the first factor, it plays as a key that opensknowledge doors. But its not enough. People need more to be successful life.

Animals should be used for researchBy: Kener Monterroso (Guatemala)

Dont be an animal! If you are may be part of researching, animal testing has less cost than human testing. Thecost is over $136 billion annually. Animals are used for research because people cant be part of experimentationas they risk their lives.

Others say animals should not be used for research because they are submitted a cruel experimentation andare infected with drugs, all animals die after several weeks but before they can die they pass for a gravecircumstance in these weeks the process to die is so cruel since sometimes only a part of their body is infected. This is the consequence why they sometimes take more time to die. Animals are sacrificed for the work that is notappropriate for humans.

That is not true because animals should be used for research. This experimentation is not appropriate forpeople because something may occur life of a person is more important than life of an animal therefore people are

    not used for any research.

Opponents say people have no right to use animals for research because animals cant defend themselvesand they cant express what they feel when they are into the cages for several weeks and expose to dangerousexperimentation.

They are wrong because researchers take all the best methods to try dont kill animals but some researchesare so stronger and animals cant survive this test. YES! People have no rights to use animals but they have noother methods to do. Anybody wants to be expose to experimentation understanding that can die and be submittedto tests with drugs and poison.

They say the cost is too much over $136 billion annually in animal testing but opponents dont know usingpeople for testing the cost will be more expensive since they will not want a person die.

For now animals are the unique method to make research but dont be an animal, they use animals sinceanimal testing has less cost than human testing. People have more importance than animals. People cant be partof research as they risk their lives.

More Seafood, More HealthBy: Omar Jambi (Saudi Arabia)

More seafood, more health! There are advantages and disadvantages of eating seafood. Some peopledont eat seafood, because its extinction, expensive, and some of them may cause disease. Actually, seafood isvery healthy. People can find it everywhere. It has good taste. People should eat seafood to be healthier.

People reject eating seafood due to may inflict extinction. Because they want to eat it every time, but actually

the biggest part of earth is water. That means the biggest population of animals are sea animals. According of that Idont think it will be extinction with sea animals, because there are million of them that live in water. That can beenough to next thousands of years feeding people. So I hope people stop to think rejecting eating seafood due tomay inflict extinction and start eating seafood.

Some people dont eat seafood because its too expensive to get it. For example, there are many countries orcities that located in middle of country, such as, Tennessee, its very far from sea and ocean. That means seafoodin that state will be high price and also fisherman cant fish sea animals easily hence their city doesnt located closeto sea and ocean. They have to travel to another country or city that located near the sea or ocean that can helpthem to get sea animals, but this will cost a lot. Even if people buy it from seafood traders, it also will be expensive.Actually it deserved to buy seafood even if its expensive, because its very healthy for body and very delicious, such as, shrimp and fish.

People say that seafood cause disease, because it causes high cholesterol in the body such as, shrimp, fish,

and oil packed fish. Actually, its very healthy if people eat it in balance. For example, people shouldnt eat seafoodeveryday. They should eat it to be balanced in their health such as, shrimp and lobster. So I hope people eatseafood in balance not everyday.

In the end, people reject and dont want seafood therefore it may cause extinction, its expensive, and someof them may cause disease, but Actually seafood is very healthy for our body, such as brain, skin and many thingsinside our body. Its very expensive, but it deserved to buy it. It has very good taste that makes us energy andhappy. So I hope people who reject seafood start to get it and eat it.

Paternity LeaveBy: Dalal Alrabah (Saudi Arabia)

Hello dad, don't work and take care of your newborn baby. According to our new lifestyle, workingmothers need some help from the father, he should participate in taking care of the new baby as well as the mom.The role of the father is not less important than the role of the mother. And he should have time off for paternity.

The mother is the first person who is attached to the baby, so she is responsible for taking care ofhim. However, the father is part of his family and also has responsibility as well as the mother. Women becomemothers from the first day that she know she is pregnant but the man become a father after his baby is born.

God creates women with the ability to handle the emotional and physical changes. On the contrarythe man doesnt have the ability to become pregnant. He is more capable of handling things that need strength. However, the husband must support his wife emotionally and physically because he completes her and he is hersoul mate. They promise to stay together in sickness and health.

Opponent say the father doesn't need to take care of his children or to bond with theme. He is thefather and he has the right to make the children obey him without any effort. However that is not true, the fatherdidn't carry his baby for nine months and he has to work on his fatherhood with his children. Parents should sharetheir responsibility to their family by doing their part in raising the children well. The children are the future of theworld. To be father is blessing to pass all your knowledge, experience and wisdom to your children to create newgeneration.

UNIVERSAL HEALTH CAREBy: Jaber Ali Almari (Saudi Arabia)

People should have health care in their life or they will die! Everyone gets sick and needs help fromdoctors. People are part of the government. So, the government should take care of their citizens.

Others say people may abuse the system and seek care for conditions. That is wrong because peopleshould have health care to be happy. For example, if people do not have health care, they will feel sad and scared

for their life, which makes them worry a lot.

Opponents tell us universal health care often has a lot of rules and regulations that people have to follow. The fact is health care could save lives. Example, people without health care will worry about their lives becausethey will be thinking if they get sick what will they do without health care.

Those who do not agree say a right to health care could increase the wait time for medical services. However, the government should sacrifice their money for their citizens, also medical services are made for thepeople. People without governments victimization will emigrate from their country.

Everyone gets sick and needs the help from doctors. Furthermore, people are part of the government. So,the government should take care of their citizens. People should have health care in their life or they will die!

Students Must Like TeachersBy: Majed Sunbol (Saudi Arabia)

I disagree that a student must like a teacher in order learn from the teacher. We can dislike our teachersbut we still can learn from them. I believe is just about respect, when we respect our teachers. That is enoughbecause about we like our teachers or not that doesnt effect the way how we learn.

First of all, we dont have to like our teachers to learn. When we like someone because their personality orwe feel happy and different when we are around them. So I believe we dont have like the teachers to learn fromthem. For example, I remember when I was in university I didnt like all my teachers and my professors, but still Ilearned from them and I was going to their classes every day also I passed all the subjects when I was there.

The thing that we must do to our teachers is to learn from them to respect them all the times. We mustrespect them because they are older than us not all of them are older than us, but also they know much more thanus. When we respect our teachers and how them how we should acting with them, they will like us and give usmore knowledge that what we want from them. If you want something from anyone you must respect this personfirst and after that you will get what you want.

In conclusion, we dont have to like our teachers to learn from them. WE just must respect them and

respect everyone around us. I believe our teachers around the world doing great and amazing things that isteaching us and they want us to learn. So we must respect them and listen to them carefully, but we dont have tolike them. That what I am thinking about even if almost I liked all my teachers, but still I had some I didnt like and Ilearned from them.

The Sight SenseBy: Aki Ichikawa (Japan)

Do you like to see the sky, which makes us happy, calm, and comfortable. I really like to see the sky eventhough its cloudy. There are many types of cloud, especially the sunset time we can see complex beautiful colorsthat people cant describe exactly. If I were to be deprived of one of my five senses, I would hate to give up sight.

As I mentioned our mother nature is incredibly beautiful. Human kind never create the exactly same colors. If I didnt have my sight, I could not imagine the colors which make us life wealth. In addition, not having sightmeans not having light, only living in real dark world. I have experienced the real dark world at Mammoth Cave, which scared me seriously.

Second, I would like to talk to people with eye contact. We might know peoples emotion such asnervousness, anger, excitement or telling a lie from their eyes more than their words. Recently, our technology hasdeveloped. If I have ability of sight I could communicate my I-phone or I-pad which are portable and veryconvenient.

Thus, I would like to see my child till I die. Of course my grandchildren as well hopefully. Her growing is themost important part of my life.

As a result, sight is the most essential sense for me. That makes my life rich, valuable and happy.

The Laziest FutureBy: Mariela Rios (Mexico)

As we have seen thru the years the technology has changed so much. The technology now is what wehave expected for years? Well, it seems like the answered is no. The technological progress makes us seem likedumb persons, actually people look like zombies now, everybody has lost the feeling of having an interestingconversation, having contact or even leave for a second the cell phone and take a look what is happening aroundus.

Even new technological machines, mentioning some as I-phone, tablet, etc. make our life easier thanbefore, because as everybody knows, in the 20s people had their studies without by copying work as now, beforeeverybody was wise and intelligent without necesititly of be copying works from Google or looking for information onyahoo or Wikipedia. People before tried to read a complete book only for increase their brain with interestinginformation.

People have done their careers without permanent knowledge. Now its just for a period of time.To conclude I prefer our old times, but it seems difficult how much our technological environment has

changed. So, it provokes us to still use every technology now.

Avoiding AbsencesBy: Raed Alabdali (Saudi Arabia)

Situation:The students at IEI, who have a F1 Visa, have to take 5 classes every day or at least 4 classes. Eachclass takes an hour. The total is 20-25 hours a week. Most students observe religious holydays, which are only oneor two days per year. However, the rules of IEI dont consider that as an excuse to cancel classes that day. As aresult the students, who celebrate on this day, will be absent and they will be counted absent. Some religions suchas Islam require Muslims to pray on holydays. The time of prayer comes across at the time of the beginning ofschool. So, this is the second reason that forces them to be absent. Because of religions, all religious people careabout their religions more than any thing else.

Proposed Solution:For the Reading and Listening lab, the students do not have to change anything because theyalready have the opportunity to make up 3 labs they have missed every term. For the rest of 3 classes, Grammar,Writing, and Conversation, there are two plans. The first is to compensate for the day lost by having those three

  • 8/11/2019 The Globe - July/August 2014

    16/25

    16

classes from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 a.m. on a given Saturday. The Second plan is to extend a regular class by 10minutes for 5 days to make up the class lost by the holyday. The classes will follow each other and begin without abreak. In this case, the teachers decision would be taken and divided over the two-month term. The goal is toteach the materials during that extra time. Most importantly, the teachers/students must make up the day lost by theend of the term.

Process steps:1- Discuss this plan with the teachers and explain to them how it would work.2- Know how many different religions are represented in the school for the next term.

3- Change the schedule of syllabus to reflect the appropriate new plan (Include the Saturday as a businessday when it is necessary and cancel classes on that holyday.)

4- Officially make the change in the schools written policy.

    Benefits:

It will raise the number of students who will register at the school if they knew that the school considers theholydays.

Some student will be already absent, so that can reduce the absences. The students would appreciate this change by working seriously and not abusing this opportunity.

    Disadvantages to consider:

The other people, who do not have a holyday, will lose the benefit from two subsequent days.

The director will face problems with new students when inquiring about their religion. The director must be

careful and not hurt the relationship with the students. Some of them may not like to be asked about theirfaith and they consider that interfering with their personality.

Some things you should know about freshman 15By Sohee Gwag (South Korea)

It is common that changes in life lead changes in weight. Some people gain weight after marriage or break ups, some lose weight after movements or starting own business. For college students, many of them experience weightgain in freshmen and this phenomenon is so called freshman 15. Usually, freshman 15 is an average of 15

pounds weight gain of students during the first year in college. Some students show bigger weight gains like 20 or25 pounds (Hellmich 1). Because freshman 15 can put health problems to the young, many researchers try to findout the causes and effects and how to deal with it.

The reason of weight gain seems obvious: eating too much than needed for daily activities or growing. ChristianEconomos, a nutrition professor at Tufts University, reports nearly 50 percent of students are eating too muchsaturated fat and most students are taking less fiber than recommended. Also she points out many young womenhave a torturous disordered eating habit: to wait eating until they get too hungry and then overeat (Lindner 1). Themain causes of this undesirable diet are easy accessibility to fast food, emotional fluctuation by separation fromfamily and tight schedule for study. According to Ann Litt, a Bethesda dietitian, students encounter with massquantities of ready-to-eat dorm food, and pizza is available to them 24 hours a day. Moreover, because of a hecticschedule students dont have time to think about what to eat and eat whatever they grab. Furthermore, she pointsout students try to comfort themselves with food when sad and lonely. Moreover, she renews that decrease in

nutrition needs from adolescences to adults can result in excessive calorie intake for newly grown-ups, collegestudents (Hellmich 1, 2, and 4).

Researchers say we should watch freshman 15 carefully because it is difficult to return and induce other healthproblems. Some interviews show that once students get abrupt big weight gain, they are reluctant to exercisebecause of bad appearance or difficulties to do with heavy bodies (Hellmich 3 and 4). Furthermore, eatingsaturated fat can lead to clogged arteries and intermittent eating which is popular among young women will likelyend up with diabetes, heart disease or osteoporosis (Economos in Lindner 1).

The first step to prevent freshman 15 is to aware the possibilities in advance and be prepared for it. Beforejumping into a tight class schedule and irregular social activities, students must plan their meals and exercise(WebMD). Lawrence Lindner, executive editor of the Tufts University Health & Nutrition Letter, gives some tips for a

    17/25

    17

healthy diet: (1) to eat three servings of vegetables and dairy foods, and two fruits daily, (2) not to eat many drinks, and (3) to have breakfast and try to avoid heavy meal at night (Lindner 3).

To make a series of good behaviors a habit, repeating it is the most important. Keeping a record can be ananswer for it. WebMD recommends students to record their eating and feelings in detail and to develop and reviseplans for eating and exercise as needed. Some researchers say parents, who have influences on their kids, canhelp students to have good eating habit by offering some nutrition advice (Litt, Gazdag and Economos in Lindner2). As a fact, one survey revealed most students who take a vitamin/mineral supplement are practicing parentsadvice to do that (Economos in Lindner 2).

To sum up, new college students are likely to get bad eating habit because of fast-food oriented campus eating, attempt to comfort themselves with food and busy schedules for study. Nevertheless, to avoid future healthproblems students need to know the possibilities and risks of big weight gains, to be prepared by knowing somerules of a healthy diet, to start watching their eating and to exercise regularly before they suffer from freshman 15.

Methods of Teaching English Language in Saudi Arabia in Government Schools Only By: Fatimah Almulhim (Saudi Arabia)

SWOT ANALYSIS FOR ENGLISH TEACHING METHODS IN THE GOVERNMENT SCHOOLS:SWOT analysis: is a very effective way to determine what are the strengths,Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threads you face in order to spotlight an internaland external areas in the field. In this part, important elements are highly usedin the public schools, as it is fundamental/daily tools to the teacher and aids to

    the student in the classroom.

Strengths:! Teaching English is free of charge.! All of the textbooks are given to the students for free and its more improved (deep knowledge and colourful

pages).! The textbooks have covered all of the English Language components (Reading, Writing, Speaking and

Listening).! English is taught four classes a week (from 5 working days).

Weaknesses:! Lack of orientation, for example, students should know why learning English is important in these days and

whats the purpose of teaching them English as a second language.!

As the English teachers their mother tongue are Arabic, they dont speak English with the students at allthe class time.! The curriculum (textbooks) doesnt cover the students need/desire of learning because most students have

difficulties in (Speaking/Communication Skills).! The textbook concentrates on a specific skill like Reading more than the other skills.

Opportunities:! Using the Blackboard to post any materials that could help the students to practice is one of the effective

    ways to practice a language.

  • 8/11/2019 The Globe - July/August 2014

    18/25

    18

! Using the latest technology in the classrooms will encourage the students to learn more, such as the smartboard.

! Held training sessions for teachers annually.! Get in touch with the Ministry of Education to evaluate the teaching methods and to give recommendations

for any weakness points might raise.! As many of the students now have a smarts phones (iPhone, Samsung!etc.), they have the opportunity to

learn the language easily more than before by downloading Apps.

    Threats:

! There is no doubt that the private schools have better ways in teaching English to their students and betterreputation among the public schools. This might an obstacle to the well-educated parents who wants theirdaughter/son to speak English fluently, so parents could move/shift to a private school instead.

! The students who are usually achieve best grades in the other subjects/modules and bad grades inEnglish, they will be disappointed or they might hate the English language itself.

    Recommendations:

1- The textbooks should highlight the modern concept of English language teaching with well-planned andproperly graded material. It should focus on teaching English for specific purposes (ESP) or English for

academic purposes (EAP). By doing so, the students would be able to acquire the knowledge ofEnglish with a great deal of efficiency to meet their specific needs.

2- Teaching of English language especially at the higher level aims to enable the learners to use it in reallife communication. . Instead, explicit classroom teaching should be provided to improve the knowledgeof four basic language skills, i.e. Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking.

Saudi Arabia is one of the few countries in the world, which provides all the modern technologies inEnglish language teaching classrooms. So they should impart communicative proficiency in English

With the help of technology, like tape recorders, CDs and videos, students can improve proficiency inthe target language by listening, speaking and drilling accurately.

Conclusion:To conclude after all the examinations through the validity of the textbook, preparation of the teachers and thestudent problems the study revealed some of the important issues of English language teaching in Saudi Arabia. Itfelt that for a successful ELT program, there is a need for active participation by the policy makers, syllabusdesigners, textbooks writers, teachers and students. Education in Saudi Arabia has a promising future especiallyEnglish. So I believe that the Ministry of Education will take all of the previous elements and recommendations inconsideration and it should focus on fixing the weakness and paying more attention to the threat points which affectthe proficiency of teaching English in order to apply all of the strengths and opportunities that will give moreopportunities to have an effective teaching methods in Saudi Arabia.

A study about: The Saudi Scholarship Program

    By: Rabab Alahmed (Saudi Arabia)

    Introduction

King Abdullahs program is one of the strongest educational programs around the world. Knowledge is thefoundation of the renaissance of nations" that was King Abdullah's message to his people (Moe.gov). Starting fromthis point, and in order to fight the ignorance and build a cultured, coherent, and well-educated society, KingAbdullah established the Saudi scholarship program to study abroad. Even though many experts guided KingAbdullah program, nothing is perfect. The programs noble goals did not save it from sharp criticism. However, theSaudi government will not allow such obstacles to stop the progress of its project. This paper will discuss severaldetailed aspects of the program as well as the criticisms.

  • 8/11/2019 The Globe - July/August 2014

    19/25

    19

What is the program? Who can join it?

KASP, or King Abdullah Scholarship Program, is a project that aims to send students to prestigiousuniversities around the world. The program is supervised directly by the Saudi Ministry of Higher Education, whowas keen to send students to the developed countries, which have been selected on the basis of the excellence oftheir educational programs. Some of these countries are Poland, Turkey, France, Australia, Germany, Korea,Japan, and the U.S.In addition, this program is available for all of the stages of higher education starting with bachelor and ending with

the PhD (Moe.gov).What does the program cover?

And due to the difficulties that face the students in a foreign country, the Saudi kingdom has allocated anamount of seven million for supporting their ambitious students. It offered a lot of services to provide an appropriateatmosphere for studying. The scholarship has covered almost everything that students may need. Students canreceive up to a five-year visa. They get medical insurance on the day their scholarship begins. They also are givena yearly free ticket. And their educations financial cost is paid whether it was for a college, an institute, or a course.Plus, they get 1,800 dollars as a monthly stipend. And there is extra incentive for those who get high grades. Inaddition, students have a choice when it comes to housing. They can live individually or with a foreign family.Students prefer to rent an apartment to feel comfortable, but experts recommend living with a host family for it willmake learning the new language easier for them (SACM.org).

    History of the program

The program grew out after King Abdullah and President George W. Bush contracted an agreement in2005. The common goal of that meeting was to strengthen the relationship between the two countries and foreconomic benefits for both (Alriyadh).

The program goals: were they achieved?

The main aim of the program is to prepare a distinguished generation who's conversant with the latestscience and technology. It also aims to improve the education of the kingdom by the polarization of newexperiences of teaching variety majors. Furthermore, study abroad helps to promote the cultural communicationwith different nations. Thus, Saudi citizens began to accept different opinions and other ideas, which is goodprogress compared to the past. And thereby, the awareness of citizens will increase as planned. Additionally the

program is expected to build a professional and qualified staff, according to the worldwide academic standards(Moe.gov).

    How to improve the program?

If we want to talk about improving the program, we should at first take a look at the policy of acceptance. And study the current problems. And here are a list of the main conditions:

    To be a Saudi citizen.

The requirement in Qiays test should be 80 and higher and the cumulative point average of high school for highschool should be 90 and higher.

The requirment in the IELTS test should be 5 and higher for medical students.

The student should not be part of any other program for studying abroad. The student should not already be a student in a local college.

For females student, they should come with "mahram" who can take care and support her in all her studying year(Moe.gov).

These conditions were pretty good at the beginning of the program. But experts believe that they are notenough. The program was focusing on choosing the elite and intelligent students and giving them the chance to geta better education. But because the conditions were so easy and not tight, the number of candidates has growninto a huge number. Which has caused a lot of bad results, such as overcrowding in one country, and raising thepercentage of unemployment in the Saudi Kingdom. Students usually look for appropriate country to choose, due tomany common factors such as their majors and the weather and taxes and so on. That's why they usually have

  • 8/11/2019 The Globe - July/August 2014

    20/25

    20

similar choices and that causes overcrowding, which is a reason for many problems by itself. Experts notice that ifmany Saudi students were in the same location, they won't get the great benefits of studying abroad. They willisolate themselves from the foreign society. Hence, their language won't develope as quickly as their mates whospend their entire time using the new language. In addition, many students choose their major depending onrecommendations from non-expert persons, who are usually one of their friends. Ignoring the labor market needs. The result of course will be another unemployed person who will join to his million mates. And to solve thisdilemma, experts have suggested to shorten the majors of the program that Saudi Arabia has already a self-sufficiency in such as business and computer science. And in addition, to encourage the students to choose therare majors or the ones that are needed in their nation, such as medical or engineering. Also, the Saudi

government established many plans to put an end to the unemployment issue. And to solve the overcrowdingissue, the SACM in the scholarship countries started to observe the students number and tries to spread them indifferent locations as much as they can.

    Students rigors:

Jumping to a new environment surely has its challenges which are almost impossible to avoid. Bothgenders have agreed that culture shock and language is the main difficulty they face. When the youth moves to anew country, they will be impressed from the first sight. Meeting with a new people, learning a new tradition, havinga new lifestyle, and eating new food. They renew their entire lives! But unfortunately that impression will diminishday by day. What's the point of meeting new people without communicating with them? The language was anextremely big obstacle, not only for making friends and building relationships, but also in their daily mission Its dull

to use a dictionary whenever you want to order pizza! said Abdulhadi Alahmed. What if they are not accepted as apart of the new society? What if they did not like the food? All of these concerns play a factor in feeling a homesickYes, we are homesick all the time, especially in the ceremonies such as Eid said Joharah Alshareef. Some of thestudents fail to adapt to the new environment. But the majority tries to deal with the issue in the wrong way. Theymelt with the community, abandoning their own their ethics and value. As a consequence, they lose their identity. There is also a rare situation of religious racism that we cannot overlook. However, Saudi girls face extra fears.Few decades ago, females were not expected to be educated. It was a very long politic battle until they get theirright to be educated as an ordinary citizen. And even currently, there are still some who oppose this. They areusually ignorant and adhering to the old generation, and are not connected to another part of modern society. Theyonly care about the traditions and customs of their ancestors, and they don't accept any kind of new and strangethings from other cultures. For that matter, girls who decide to study abroad count as a rebellion against the strictsociety rules. The second problem is transportation. As we know, Saudi women are not allowed to drive their owncar inside the kingdom. Most of Saudi families have been hiring a driver for their daughters, but obviously, it's reallyhard to hire a driver abroad. So they should take driving lessons. And actually, the way they used to live in theirhome does not help them to be independent it all. Saudi girls are queens, or that's what the stereotype says. In theSaudi culture and the gulf in general, the girls are so spoiled in a way that creates a dependency and anIrresponsible personality. Therefore, female students are supposed to exert extra effort. Not only about focusing ontheir studies, but also to learn how to live individually, which is the hardest mission for them, and fighting againstthe society pressure (Alyaum).

Do graduated students prefer go back home or stay? Why?

Do graduate students prefer to go back to Saudi Arabia or continue their lives in the scholarship country? Many factors can control this question. Students have two points of view about this topic; one believes thatgraduated students do not have the choice. They must go back to Saudi Arabia, to serve their country as areciprocate and to show their loyalty to the country. And that's what is already planned for them. Actually most ofthe students prefer to go back to their families and find a job in their country in order to help developing the country.

However, some have a different opinion. They don't prefer to go back to Saudi Arabia, for they are looking for betterelements for their lives. Females are looking for better women rights. And males are looking for democracy. It's sounfortunate that they are looking for such things outside of their country. But winds don't always help the ships.Finding a job was the main problem they face because being a non-citizen, their opportunity for getting a job isfewer than others.

    Conclusion:

As science has no limits, ambition has no limits too. That is what pushes students to leave their homes, families, and friends behind and look forward to the future. Our human greedy Instinct always inspires us toimprove ourselves no matter what it will cost.

    REPAIR OZONE LAYER

    By: Sadiye Aras (Turkey)

    Introduction

    Ozone (O3) molecules

    are formed from oxygen

    in the earths

    stratosphere. It is blue in

    color .It is formed from

    molecular oxygen (O2)

    ultraviolet recombination

    of atomic oxygen (O) with

    O2. The term ozone came

    from the Greek word that

    means to smell. Ozone is

    protecting life on Earth.

    High in the atmosphere

about 24 km up the ozone

acts as a shield to protect Earths surface from the suns harmful ultraviolet radiation. Without the ozone layer, we

would be more susceptible to skin cancer, cataracts, and impaired immune systems (Stephen1).

    Background

At the beginning of life, the Earth didnt have, the ozone layer the suns UV (Ultraviolet) radiation damaged living

beings even their DNA was changed over time. With an increase in the plant population O2 increased in the

atmosphere then the suns UV rays reaction on O2 into O, those O make reaction with O2and became ozone (O3)

in to stratosphere .Until 50 years ago life was good and everything was in balance but scientists found out that the

ozone layer had been damaged because of human action.

    Why ozone damaged

Global warming is the result of CO2 .CO2 comes from burning fossil fuels and destroying tropical rain forest.

Heart from the sun reflect back from earth and cause global temperature. Trees absorb CO2while releasing O2

back in the air .Trees absorbs dirty gases (N, Am, So). (Aras 1)* .

Another human bad action is burning fossil fuels. Fossil fuels are fuels made of organic matter such as coal, or

oil. When fossil fuels are burned they give off a green house gas called CO2. Also manning coal and oil allows

methane to escape .So, as we burn fossil fuels, we put more and more CO2 into the air. This makes green house

effect strange, so in essence it causes more heat to be trapped within the atmosphere. This, in turn, causes

temperatures to rise (Aras 1). **

Another problem is CFCs. Ozone has been aerosol spray can and chlorofluorocarbons, or CFCs. CFCs has

been used for cooling refrigerators, air conditioners, liquid plastic into various kinds of foams, from building

insulation to fast-food hamburger containers, spray cans, car air condition. In addition to CFCs, a number of related

chemical compounds were developed over the years, all of which fluorine, chlorine, bromine, iodine, and astatine.

CFCs from industrial products were floating up into the stratosphere and accumulating there. Those elements

reaction with O2 and barriers oxygen to became ozone. So scientist warned us to stop damaging the ozone layer

    (Fisher29).

Same country made international agreements which protect our environment. Montreal Protocol and Kyoto

    protocol.

    The Montreal Protocol

The chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) are greenhouse gases whose emissions into the atmosphere are already

controlled under the Montreal Protocol on ozone-depleting substance. The phase out of their manufactured in

industrialized countries by 1996 and in developing countries by 2006 as required by the 1992 amendments to the

Montreal Protocol will ensure that the profile of their atmospheric concentration will continue to

    decline.(houghton245)

    The Kyoto Protocol

The basic structure of the protocol and the commitments required by different countries were agreed at meeting of

the conference of the parties in Kyoto in 1997.The emissions controlled by the protocol are from six greenhouse

    gases(see box below)(Houghton246)

    Greenhouse gas Global warming potential(GWP)

    Carbon dioxide (CO2) 1

    Methane (CH4) 23

    Nitrous oxide (N2O) 296

Hydro fluorocarbons (HFCs) from 12 to 12 000

    a

Per fluorocarbons (PFCs) from 5000 to 12 000a

    Sulphur hexafluoride (SF6) 22200

Scientists are trying to find some way to the repair ozone layer. Can we make more ozone? Can we repair

ozone? The answers are yes .This paper will provide information about repairing our planets ozone layer.

This theoretical development said they can repair ozone hole by ships oxygen to stratosphere. Oxygen gas to

be injected in the Ozone Layer Geoengineering (OLG)procedure can be useful in at least two ways; it can react

with oxygen atoms to create more ozone molecules, or can be dissociated by UV rays to form oxygen atoms that

will continue in photochemical reactions described.

Ozone gas,O3itself is unstable and dissociates to diatomic oxygen,O2 at high concentrations in about half an hour

    under atmospheric conditions.

    2O3"3O2 (#242 nm)

Heat intensity in the stratosphere dissociates oxygen molecule to atomic oxygen,

    O2"O+O

O2+ solar energy of wavelength less than 242 nm"2O2

    O+ O2"O3

    O+O3"2O2

O3+solar energy of wavelength less than 336nm"O+O2

By injecting is oxygen gas under high pressure to replace lost molecules and join in reaction. Aerodynamic

objects will be used to convey oxygen to low stratospheric altitude will mitigate the depletion .This will be noticed by

    re-observing the hole after time.

    Ozone Depleting Substances

This issue says that they add chlorine and bromine to the ozone layer, which effectively widens the hole. Thus,

the stable point represents ozone depletion. Since we cant make more ozone, the solution is to reduce the hole in

the bucket back to its natural size. The only way to do that is to remove the excess chlorine and bromine from the

stratosphere. And the only way to do that is to stop making CFCs and several other chemicals.Over time,

stratospheric chlorine and bromine will combine with other chemicals and eventually fall to Earth. Thats the point of

ending production of these chemicals. By this work the ozone layer will heal by about 2050.14

    Artificial Leaf

Mr. Melchior claims that he has made the first photosynthetic material that is living and berating as a leaf doesJust like real leaves .It is made up of chloroplasts from plant cells that are suspended in a web of silk protein. The

protein is extracted from natural silk fibres. The new material biological leaf (pictured) that needed a small amount

of fresh water and light. It absorbs water and carbon dioxide to produce oxygen, just like natural leaves do on

Earth. This material could develop and made a lot oxygen and solve earth (ozone).problem.

My thesis:Making oxygen in laboratory (factory).

    Laboratory production

Can we make oxygen (O2) in the laboratory? Yes in the laboratory, oxygen can be produced by electrolysis.

    H2O=Water O2=Oxygen H=Hydrogen O2=Ozone

    2H2O"O2+4H++4e

    -!!! ! !!!!"!!

In the net reaction, two equivalents of water are

converted into one equivalent of oxygen and four

equivalents of hydrogen. Now we know we can get

oxygen by water if we build our water electrolysis

factory by an ocean where we have unlimited water

to analysis to oxygen. We will get oxygen and

hydrogen. Oxygen is the product which we want and

we will release it to in to the air. The other product,

hydrogen, we can use in many areas.

    Hydrogen production uses

    Lifting agent

Hydrogen can cause a balloon to lift or float upward

    in the air.

Air consists of about 78% Nitrogen and 21% Oxygen .A Nitrogen atom has an atomic weight or mass of 14,Oxygen

has an atomic mass of 16 and the atomic mass of Hydrogen is 1.All three are molecules in their natural state:N2,O2,

    and H2.

Thus, a balloon filled with Hydrogen gas, weighs much less than the air it displaces. This creates a buoyancy

force that pushes the balloon upward.

    Fuel

Hydrogen can be used as a fuel.

    Rockets

Since hydrogen is highly flammable, especially when mixed with pure oxygen, it is used as a fuel in rocket.

Usually, they combine liquid hydrogen with liquid oxygen to make an explosive mixture.

    Clean fuel for cars

But also, hydrogen is one of the cleanest fuels because when it burns, the result is simple water. That is why

there are efforts to create engines that can power automobiles on hydrogen. This would greatly help to reduce the

air pollution and global warming problems.

    Thermonuclear energy

When hydrogen is heated to extreme temperatures, such as on the sun, the nuclei of hydrogen atoms will fuse

to create helium nuclei. This fusion results in the release of an enormous amount of energy, called thermonuclear

energy. This process is what creates the energy of the sun.

    Chemical processes

Hydrogen is an essential part of many chemical processes.

    Acids and base

Hydrogen atoms are in every acid and base. Hydrogen gas is sometimes used directly to create an acid for

example, it is used in the creation of hydrochloric acid.

    H2+Cl2"2HCl

    Petroleum

Hydrogen gas is used in the processing of petroleum to break down crude oil into fuel oil, gasoline and such.

    Fertilizer

Hydrogen is important in creating ammonia (NH3) for use in making fertilizer.

    Food and fat

Hydrogen gas is used as a hydrogenating agent to for polyunsaturated fats, such as used in margarine
